Expanded Universe Custom Trooper Contest!
That's right folks, it's time for our April Custom Contest, and this is NO April Fool's Day joke!
In the more than 30 years of fantastic Star Wars lore, there have been a wealth of troopers to fire their blasters at!
This month's challenge is to find that penultimate Expanded Universe trooper that you've been enthralled with and
create it in custom format! Here are the rules for this month's contest:
-You must be a registered 'Shipyards Member to participate.
-You can repaint, resculpt, or add onto additional figures that exist already.
-MUST be a Trooper (Scout, Storm, Snow, Clone, etc) from the Expanded Universe(Comics, Novels, Art, Video Games, etc.).
-No clones from the Clone Wars TV Show, although if they appear in a comic, there would be an exception.
-There are no Clones from the movies aloud, either.
-Must be 3 3/4" in scale.
-Only 1 entry per person.
-Must do at least an addition and have a picture to represent your custom's "realness".
-Must be a new custom that has never been posted by you.
This contest is going to run from April 1st until April 23rd at 11:59pm CST.
Voting will take place from April 24th-30th, with results posted on the 30th.
There is no prize offered for this contest, just challenge against your fellow customizers!

Pat not to be an uber geek, but he appeared in the WEG RPG first.
In these books:
# Alliance Intelligence Reports
# Rules of Engagement: The Rebel SpecForce Handbook
# Galaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back
# Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim
# The Last Command Sourcebook

That Seatrooper is from Battle for the Golden Sun, I plan on doing what is featured in this picture, and that's the Seal Guy.
-
Darth Neo here are some pics of the Republic Commando from TOR.
-
could i do an individual that happens to be a trooper (or at least disguised as one)? if so id do a Zayne Carrick in Mando armor
-
Sorry, the rules state Trooper, and is referring to different types of troops that would make up companies and squads and such.
-
well then can i make a plain old neo-crusader?
-
If that is a trooper featured in the Expanded Universe, be it from comics, books, video games, trading card games, etc, then yes.
-
Yeah it is Pat, they are Mandalorians from KOTOR era, so basically he wants to make a Mando.
-
this has to be a storm trooper expanded universe variant right? as in imperial or republic forces? wouldn't mandos be off the list?....
if not.... I've been wanting to do a neo-crusader for a long time too, or a death watch commando.... but I'll let someone else do those...
man I was wanting to do a scuba-scout... now I'm going to HAVE to use one of my scout troopers in my upcoming projects for my own sea-trooper after seeing that picture!
I probably won't be entering this contest though, Great Idea but I've not realy got any ideas that havn't already been claimed! I also don't have a very good EU knowledge base other than a few comics and wookipedia articles...
UNLESS you let me enter my gen. wier custom I just finished up a few weeks ago ;)
-
yay can it be from a ................. fan made photonovel .... ? or....... dus it have to be from a dark horse comic like a kotor mando or darth krayt saga mando ot trop cause i finished a old republic mando soooo ..?

NOOOO SPUDA I CALLED NEO CRUSADER!!!!!! Ill fight you to the death for it! lol
-
Guys, search the Star Wars Database, as well as Wookieepedia, and you'll find plenty of potential TROOPERS to use.
Clonemedic96, if your Old Republic Mandalorian was a TROOPER in the game, then he is acceptable. You guys are making this a LOT more difficult than it needs to be!
-

awww we just want to make sure we arn't breaking the rules and won't get disqualified! lol
-
Oh, thats a tough one.... I may do Boomer from the Republic Heros Game.........(HOW ORIGINAL! ;D)
Well I'm almost done most of the pulmonary stuff (Paint, weathering accessories) But I will probably work on it more and more.
-
What, no WIP shots?
-
ill put up some of my WIP shots when i find my camera
-
What, no WIP shots?
I'm stingy like that, Pat. LOL I'll see what I can do but I want it to be surprise- ish..... Hear me out?
-
My Neo-Crusader is now officially DONE! I still need to find my camera to take some shots of him
-
K Here he is my Mandalorian Neo-Crusader (and a reference)
Parts are:
Upper Body-Mandalore (from fett evolution)
Lower Body- Darth Vader
Extras- Leather(belt), Jango Fett(Holster), Cloth(helmet), TCW Space Trooper(jetpack)
-
more...
-
wow, clonemedic that is superb!!
-
Thanks!
-
AWESOME NEO-CRUSADER!!!!
-
Yep, looks great! Thanks for the reference pic, too - what comic is it from? (I'm not much of a comics guy, so I gotta ask.) I like that Wook Neo-Crusader in that pic, too. Looks like the chest-rig off the ROC Armadillo driver or maybe the Para-Viper. Hmmmmmmmmm.....
-
its from KOTOR Issue 22 (i think)
-
thanks - gives me something to hunt for now...
-
Great job! After this contest is over, you'll have to post this in the custom figures section! bbfet
-
Ok, here are some WIP shots of my RAD Trooper...
As you can see, I combined the lower portion of a Stormtrooper bucket with the Biker Scout bucket, minus the visor. Then I used some clay to smooth out the transition and hardened it some. I'm debating on adding in a rebreather and backpack since it would stand to reason it needs to be a self contained breathing apparatus, though it doesn't look like there is one in the picture. I'm still debating.

looking good Pat!! how tricky is it to work with clay and something that small? thanks for the WIP's pics!!
is that one of Clints resin shoulder pauldrons? or one of Devins? looks like a very clean cast!
-
OMG Pat, your sculpting your own helmets now?
Now that's what I'm talking about!!!
Looking good buddy!
Cm, your crusader looks suparb. Very nice work there, sir!
-
I'm a long ways off from being GOOD at it, but this one was easy since all I did was fill in some gaps. I need to alter the rear a bit more yet, I realized looking at my own pictures.
-
Great looking figure CM. The parts selection matches the reference picture well. Nice paint work as well.
Pat you are off to a great start! Than helmet is very cool and I can't wait to see some paint on this guy.
-
could we enter stuff from fan made ficion please??
-
NO. The rules are stated at the beginning of this thread. Those are the rules we are following. Sorry.
-
okay doh ! ¬ >:( ah well i might do something imp then i scrapped kotor guy but i dont have my camra anyways
-
can it be in a game because im gonna do a trooper from battlefront 1
-
sorry im gonna be doing rc 1309 niner
a perple commando cool
-
That will be fine
-
pat what did you use to sculpt onto that helmet? it looks good btw, can't wait to see it finished. I've been thinking about doing some sculpting on some of my resin helmets to make modified helmet molds for recasting (kind of like what clint's been doing already).
-
that looks amazing already! I sense this is going to be an amazing contest!
-
Pat, my figure is running and my computer is about here. I'll give you some work in progress shots, of course!
-
It's a Scout Trooper helmet with the lower portion of a Stormtrooper helmet, and blended together with Sculpey modeling clay. I have to redo the back to get the shape correct, and then begin painting it up.
-
Guys, here's the low-down on my figure: it is a clone trooper Captain/Jet trooper. This info is courtesy of Wookiepedia: "Also, a branch of jet trooper, aerial clone trooper captains participated in many prominent battles, such as Mace Windu's defense of Dantooine."
I will post pics upon my computer's return.
-
Ok, I've finished my entry, VERY early. I'm not all that thrilled with him, because I just could NOT get the sculpted head right, and the sculpey kept wanting to crack on me. However, it does have the overall look I was trying to achieve, so here he is...

very cool, i think you did a good job on the sculpting
-
Nice figure, Pat! The likeness looks great.
-
Man it does look just like the reference shot!
-
Thanks guys! you know, the more I look at my WIP shots compared to the reference pic, I am liking it more and more. Now, I'd like to see Clint mold this helmet, a better sculpt done the way only Clint can. I'd be all in for that!
-
In the reference shot, the outer shell away from the face kinda reminds me of the airborne trooper helmet.
-
Good eye Clint. I was thinking the same thing, there seems to be some additional details there.
-

nice one Pat... i haven't worked with sculpey but with my experience with working with clay i have found that less is better, just by adding small amounts each time and letting it dry some you get to see where the bonding is at it weakest, you will be able to fill in the cracks....... just a thought mate...
good luck to all that enter this will be a good one!!
-
Love it! :p
-
pat, next time try a self hardening two part clay substitute like apoxi sculpt. It'll harden up as you work with it and create a hardened plastic when finished.
BTW the less is more montra that's already been stated is definately true while sculpting. Once hardened it is very easy to add more sculpting compound, but incredibly dificult to remove excess.
-
Nice One Pat ;D
-
that is a great rad troop pat'ika
-
Thanks!
Now, where are the rest of these WIP shots?
-
I posted this over in my Customs thread as well, so here is my contest entry. This is a clone Aerial Assault Captain, in which I've proudly created. I added on a jetpack, by using an antenna-base-and-jetpack hookup. I also painted this, which inspired my Phase 2 Clone Commander, Jenks(A real clone) in my customs section. Here you guys are!
-
In the full body shot, I painted the trooper's legs red, as is customary for jet troopers. The reason in doing so is to protect the troopers legs from both jetpack fire and blasterfire, as the paint is a fire retardant.
-

Pat, your custom is awesome in my book. It is way better than anything I could ever sculpt!
-
I like your captain, Dan. He looks sharp.
-
Are you entering a custom, by chance, Clint? It'd be a perfect opportunity to demostrate more of your skills, lol.
-
Considering that I have just returned from a 5-6 week job away from the house, Dan, I am not sure I have time to do more than get caught up around here by the due date on this one. It would be nice though. What character would you suggest?
-
Follow your heart...and the guidelines, lol.
-
Well, believe it or not, I am not a big EU fan. I just haven't had time for it, I guess. That's why I was asking.
-

Oh. In that case, what about one of these:
-
that "fat trooper" for lack of better words would be a perfect match to some of the new iron man figures. I'm thinking the aquatic armor...
-
Devin, I was thinking the EXACT same thing, and it's almost the Trooper I was going to enter. I still may make this one yet.
-
Now that is a hek of an idea.
-
HEY I WAS LOOKING AT THIS AND REALIZED THAT FAT ONE LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THE CUSTOMS I MADE EARLIER!! To bad I dont believe in contest. But that would be a great idead for someone to do.
-
request for clarification:
This is for EU troopers only, correct? For example, a legacy-style ARF trooper would NOT be eligible?
The trooper needs to be illustrated to be valid? For example, WEG's d6 SWRPG gave stats for a number of Imperial troopers that were never actually illustrated. (I'm looking at YOU, Imperial Sharpshooters!) Would they be valid entries?
-
If it was there, but not shown visually, my ruling is use your imagination.
-
Can someone please show me this Wookiepedia where it shows the available Troopers we can make?
I know it is last minute but I would like to see about 10 different choices and or links so I can figure one out.
Those Troopers listed above with the scuba one and the heavy troopers and all those are they off limits or can we use those. I know alot of troopers that I have pics of to use. Can we use anyone we want or what?
I am kinda confused about his contest is why I am asking. EU troopers is just that EU but so many have made it into books and mags and every other thing lately. So I need to know exactly what guidelines I can and cant use.
I want to enter BUT I will wait until someone shows me the troopers available to me. I am seriously confused. Sounds stupid I know but I am lost.

Hey DC, here is the link:

and here an example, the Clone Assassin (my favorite EU trooper):

-
Final hours to get in your last shots, guys.
-
Ok guys, this contest is now closed! You need to send me your final pictures of your entry to phatty@imperialshipyards.net and I will get the voting underway!
-
...cries silently at the paint-rack...
I misfigured the ending day and was off by 24 hrs. My Legacy ARF will just become a new custom rather than my newest contest entry.
-
SO WHO WON?!?!?!?!?!
-
Nevermind he he he!!!!!
-
who did win?
