Title: flaccideagle's Custom Vehicles ~~ UPDATED 9/26/2011
Post by: flaccideagle on January 20, 2010, 11:59:10 AM
Hello, I am new here, and love all of your great customs!   I recently started doing 1:18 Star Wars customs after years of doing 1:6 scale figures.  I'm really into vehicles and playsets and dioramas.  I am a big fan of Tatooine, the Cantina, and all things ANH.

So I decided to start by doing a Landspeeder:

SCAVENGER LANDSPEEDER - FEB 2010

This scumbag roams the wastes with his broken-down speeder, and malfunctioning droid; scrounging the deserts for what parts he can, to buy drinks at the local cantina.

FREECO SPEEDER REPAINT - OCT 2010

One of the cantina drunks works part time fixing speeder bikes and droids to sponsor his nightlife...

IMPERIAL SCANNING DROID - DEC 2010

An old, malfunctioning, full-body scanner droid, designed to prevent weapons and illegal cargo from entering the port.  Long ago shot and damaged by vagrants, all the locals know that you can sneak whatever you want past "Ol' Red" - his sensors haven't worked in almost fifteen cycles.

So I decided to start by doing a Landspeeder:

Here is a WIP from about two weeks ago, with no paint, mostly assembled:

It's going to be a desert scavenger's speeder.

Nice! I like the reworked landspeeder luke would be very happy, LOL What did you use for the ( I think fuel tanks?).

looks like an excellent start.  I like the back end reworking and I love the added pannels on the "hood" to fix the missing pannels from luke's clunker.  can't wait to see it finished and painted.  any idea what color scheme your going to go with?

Wow, you have done alot of mod work to that speeder. Looks like you are on the right track to pull off an impressive looking custom.

Sweet, our Sarge is gonna love this one as landspeeders are his favorite vehicle. Expect this one to hit our front page when you get her done. Nice work.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.  It's the first 1:18 vehicle I've done since the 90's, thanks for your support!

I'll take some more WIP photos tomorrow, I've painted it up quite a bit since these shots.

I've also started a new Freeco bike that I'm trying to match to my R2-B1 droid.  I'll take some pics of that too.

alot work ahead of yourself there ..i think the paint gives it alot of personality sometimes a more realistic look.
Title: Re: flaccideagle's Custom Vehicles - Landspeeder #1
Post by: flaccideagle on January 22, 2010, 12:43:39 PM
Here's some more photos of what the speeder looks like today.   I have a few days off so I hope to finish it off pretty soon.

The idea I had for this custom was for a Star Wars wasteland wanderer, a la "Mad Max."  But much more George Lucas and less George Miller.  So I picked a color scheme of one of the cool 1970's police cars from the first Mad Max film.

Rather than just copy the red/yellow/blue scheme (which would be cool!) - I got creative and made more of a sand junker.

I wanted to make it really pop and be colorful, and then later on I will weather it down to make it look all beat up.

The cockpit was pretty easy, and really fun to do.  I really want to get my panel making better, it's really fun.  I still have to make two screens there and add a center console piece that I finished today.

The open panel engine was an issue.  At first I wanted to make both the side engines match, covered, but then after trying to first add a styrene cover, and then trying add a new one on, I gave up and painted it a bit.

The extra weight of the engines makes the back rub the ground, but oh well.

There's still a lot of work to do!

Here's a WIP of the driver.

The droid I'll start after one or the other is done.

Here's another one I started a couple weeks ago:  A Freeco Speeder:

It's going to have a driver and droid (R2-B1)

Yes, you piled alot of work on that landspeeder, my man! The freeco speeder is coming along nicely, also.

Mad Max is also one of my favorite movies but I like the Road Warrior more.

It's kind of a "set": the Freeco, a matching pilot, and a factory droid, basing it all on the droid's colors.  Same kind of thing for the Landspeeder.

I'll be honest... I was worried about this custom's flashiness with all those bright colors... But the weathering you added to it realy dulls that down and the end result is pure aeseome.  I love it.
The pilot and droid are just icing on the cake.

That really is a great custom speeder, figure and droid, they all look perfect together. I especially like the background story you have created, it certainly sounds good  to an old School Star Wars fan like me.

The use of the Mcquarrie figure is another Old School touch I really like. You just keep on creating stuff like that and I'll be your no1 fan!

That speeder conversion looks great!

I like the fuel tank/exhaust swap-out, and the weathering really sets off your work.  The bright colors on the outside work really well.  Also, the coordinating Astromech is an asbolute riot!  The control panle could use a bit of cleaning up in terms of your paint application, but that's a minor nit.

Wonderful stuff.

Thanks so much guys.  Tamer, that front-page mention the other day rocked.  Thanks for the honor.

You all are big inspirations for me.  Your kindness means a lot!!

Hangarbay94, Phatty, Luke Sprywalker, ... I've learned so much from your work.  Thanks for your kind words.  Your youtube weathering tutorial is really good, Hangarbay94.  It's great, and it's actually one of the better painting instructional videos out there.

I did a bunch more paint work on the Freeco bike.   It's coming along OK, but it seems this plastic is a little different than the more paint-friendly plastic used on other SW toys.    Some spots just won't hold paint for some reason.  The frosted cockpit didn't leave me much deco options, but I think it's going to come out pretty fun.  I'll take pictures this weekend at some point.

I'm also starting another speeder.  I'll show and tell when there's something new to show.

That speeder conversion looks great!

Thanks so much.  Yeah, it's my 1st small-scale control panel, and I have a better method to make them look a little better.  Some of the things I wanted to add just didn't work, like these great little screen displays I made, when I installed them, they just "blended" into the black, so I re-made them 3 or 4 times with no luck.
I also have incredibly shaky hands that forces me to do details a little different than most people.

Thanks so much for all of your kind words and interest!

I am still working on the Freeco bike, I got stuck re-assembling it, I used a hair dryer to remove the rubber/vinyl engine caps, and ended up deforming the frame of the vehicle.  Instead of a "super-clean" look, I'm switching gears and going for an "dirty old single pretend playboy" look.  I just have to find the perfect figure to pilot the Freeco.  You'll see.

I'm also doing a large GI Joe vehicle that I bought to trade with someone, but the deal fell through, so I figured I'd give it a new paintjob.

I also sketched out a few rough designs for my next few speeder projects,  I think I'm going to make one in a "flying" pose.

Wow! I love this vehicle! You did a great job on the repaint and I love the little dio you set up. Great story about the cantina patron, you really gave up the full package! Looks like front page news to me!

I finally finished the Landspeeder the other day.  I still have to give it a protective coat, but here it is:

SCAVENGER LANDSPEEDER

Thanks for all of your kind support, and encouragement!   Now to finish the other speeder...

Just found this awesome speeder and figures! just WOW, I like them a lot, outstanding design details.
Also the Freeco Speeder is a hell of a clever design, great paint job, too.  :o

FE, what I really love about your work is the colour of everything. You make each custom your own, they aren't simply copies of things seen in the films or TV shows, it shows creativity on your part.

I love both speeders, and all of the little details that goes with them. Awesome!!!!

Thanks hanns

So here is another update as to what I'm up to.

In the spring, ISY had a "custom droid" contest.  Once I was about a week away from finishing my entry, after a long time planning it out, work caught up to me until the last few weeks or so.

I had a bunch of R4-P44 parts lying around, and decided to use him as part of the base.

I didn't want it to just be a repaint, so I thought, perhaps I will figure out what job he could do, and then design some add-ons to fit with that function.  Like, for example, C-3pO, he's an ettique droid, so him being gold and human-like makes sense.  R2 is designed to fit into a ship, or to fix things, hense the size and arms, etc.

I thought about making him a port security droid, kind of a Star Wars version of the body scanners I see at the airport all the time.  It also kind of fits with my preferences in customizing, I'm more into making the average, non-armed vehicles and civilian Star Wars items.

So I went to the closest hobby shop to buy some more paints, as I knew I wanted this droid to be red.  The shop is mostly railroad and WWII military focused, and always has SF kits for really cheap.

I found this strange eastern european made kit:

...and combined some random parts together with a Space Satellite/station model kit together to form his shell and body.

I added sensors and all sorts of stuff before I had to stop, and I'm hoping to finish it really soon, it just needs details, like panel colors, and some more holes and such filled.

I also started to make another speeder last week, this time from Anakin's hot rod.

I'm going to add some parts and stuff as I go, more working on the frame and engines now.

I'm replacing the engines with these cool satellite parts, and figuring out how I'm going to mount everything.

ha! let me return the favor ;)

I use acrylics, I use the UK Warhammer model paint company ARMY PAINTER as primers, they are awesome but expensive...  Then sometimes I'll use Rustoleum Specialty Plastic sprays for colors... while they're cheap, they seem to run out fast and not stick to everything, but at 1/3rd the price they work for a lot of stuff I'm doing.

For brush work I use Speedball Acrylic paints.  I am going to have to change to another brand, thinking Liquitex, because Speedball stopped making the line of paints i've been using...

As a friendly tip, the plastic used for toys is a pretty dense and durable surface..meaning it's a little resistant to some paints. An easy step in the process is to always spray your vehicle down with a bonding primer and any brand will do. They're typically pretty cheap and a good base coat to follow should prevent any chipping or peeling of the paint. And it gets rid of the general plastic look of the vehicle too.
And thanks for the tip on the type of paint you use. Sometimes I tend to get a little tunnel vision when it comes to my paints..and start scratching my head wondering what I've done wrong..but it may just be a simple switch in brands.

Thanks for the advice, I tried a bonding primer before and it took away a lot of the detail in what I was doing... it also wouldn't stick to some of the plastics... maybe I need to try another brand!  I will begin looking into this as I haven't found a base spray I'm 100% happy with...

Tamer thanks for the front page, that is so cool and unexpected!

Ok so I have made more headway on a few of these projects.

So the droid is almost done... He still needs some dirt and grime though.  I love it when customs are all grimy and dirty.

I also started in on the seats for the new convertible "Hot Rod"  I've been working on.

I fought against it very hard, but ultimately decided to go with yellow for the insides.

I hit a stumbling block with this however, when I was painting the engines (which are from an unusual space station/satellite model kit) the paint I used wouldn't stick.  It seems that this thing is coated in a heavy, gloss coat that won't allow paint to bond to it, or it does something chemically... any paint I applied to the painted engine would crack as soon as it dried, and fall and flake off.  Very unusual with this brand of paint I'm using...  I wish I noticed that it had a semi-gloss coat on it before... ah well, it was pretty easy to fix.   I left them soaking in mineral spirits overnight, and almost all of my gloopy paint (and about 3/4 of the gloss layer) came off easily with a toothbrush, gloves, and a little elbow grease.  There's still some in the cracks & crevasses, but it should be fine.  A quick cleaning and the parts are ready to go for painting again tonight (with more success hopefully!)

I also began working on some panels to cover up the holes left by  the removed action feature:

I may scrap this if they look sloppy and go for that "Rat Fink" type of exposed engine look.  This is my 3rd attempt at them, for some reason that curve is really tough to duplicate.

...and an engine for the back:

***

I wasn't sure where to put these, but here are some custom figures I've made over the last few months.  They're pretty much headswaps or painted a little.  Hope you like them!

Well many days later and I have finally completed my droid.  I've had these pictures for a little bit, I've been pretty busy with the holidays and haven't had a chance to post.  As with all my work, it's ISY exclusive.  I don't post my customs anywhere else right now because you guys are so great ;)

As many of you know, I love all things dirty filthy in the Star Wars world.

This droid has seen better days, and has been weathered to show many difficult (if half hearted) pursuits.

Since stormtroopers can't shoot, I wanted this droid to be like an airport scanner that doesn't really work.

I've been busy lately working on the hotrod speeder I showed earlier, as well as a few non-star wars customs (like a 1/144 scale factory diorama for my toy robot collection, and some more work on 1:6 scale figures from Mad Max and Blade Runner...) - I have more on deck too, another speeder, as well as possibly some speeer bikes and other one man vehicles.

What do you guys do when you run out of room in your display? I'm running out of space fast !

Also, any advice you guys have about making clear rod "flying" stands, is much appreciated as it's holding up a long-in-the-process piece for me...

Thanks for looking!

Actually thanks to all of you.    Thanks to you guys, your kind words, and good positive vibes, you've re-kindled my love of making customs.

Yeah the Mechanical Bases are amazing, so surprised people slept so hard on these.  They work great as background pieces in any scale.  Search in japanese language and you will see an epic number of great customs made with these.  I recently got a huge collection of them online for cheap and quickly started a 4-bay+  1/144-scale hangar display for my robot toy collection... which is why updates on my latest speeder have been slow.

you mentioned clear rods for a flying effect....

look around online and look up "clear PVC rod" or "Plexiglass rod" and you should find some solid yet clear plastic rods that you can cut to whatever length you need.  You can get them in varying sizes as well.  then just place them under your items as stands....

A $25-30/each price tag keeps casual buyers or curious buyers at bay, I think.

I *tried* to get my kids to pick me up some stuff like this while they were stationed in Okinawa for 3 years.  They'd go to the beaches but wouldn't go find a toy/hobby shop for dad.  grrr.

Ah man that sucks!!
you should be able to find these more around $10 a piece.
I've managed to hunt ebay a bit and score them for $2-5 a set used.

Here try Hobby Link Japan... around US$10 a piece
http://www.hlj.com/product/KBYMB-11

I'll also note that the company that makes them keeps their modeling support products in-print and makes them cheaper and cheaper as years go on (Some of their detail kits, once $20 in 2002, are now $2-5 or less !)

Ok so here's another really, really brief work in progress update.  I've been working on it every day since these pictures were taken Friday, so hopefully the speeder will be done really soon.

So it's been a while, I hit a few serious snags with this project as I mentioned in the last update.

The idea behind this custom is a "My first speeder" type of thing- a suped-up hot rod.  The piece was intended for me to recover my mixed media skills from back in the day, by using some brass, some lazer-etched, and some found-parts of metal as well as Hasbro parts and styrene.

The new front engines didn't take to the paint I was using, so I had to re-color them to yellow.  I mounted them onto their "engine block" yesterday, there's still quite a bit of painting and detailing to be done (to cover up a lot of the sloppy cuts i made with the Dremel) but I think you get the idea.

they still don't look like how I envision them but a little elbow grease, and they're be nice...

Here is the basic layout for the back "extra engine."  Again I hit a snag with this as the original brass and photo-etched parts I wanted to use just didn't look so great when I fit-test them.  The idea is that this is a "blower" type of attachment to make this hot rod faster.  The original idea was far more complex, with metal-etched and some found brass parts incorporated. It's pretty small size (about 2 inches tops) but I really over-filled it to a distracting level.  I didn't clean the brass too well, and when it was primed it looked like a painted antique almost-steampunk mess more than a metal engine like intended.  So into the trash it went.  This is just a really rough test fit of the parts before trimming and painting and to see how it photographs.

As many of you guys know, I am very much into the classic, old-school, original trilogy look, the "high-science-meets junk-dealer" vibe.  I thought this design was much better in the end, and instead of brass, I will go with the much-cheaper paper clips to make the piping I wanted.

Also I finally figured out what to do with the front exposed engine panels.   I made a cover with a handle, which took way too much time to get right.  This is my 4th attempt and I think I finally got it right.  It still needs some more styrene panels and whatnot of course.

I've been distracted with starting a blog about my toy collection and customs (something my friends have been pressuring me to do for 5+ years!) and making a painted diorama for my robot collection out of those Mechanical Base displays, but now that they are 90% done, I am back full-time into this project.  I also started a little bit on two more speeders, which I will show when they're more than parts in my parts bin ;)

cheers all, and thanks for looking as always!!!!

RED HOT ROD SPEEDER - JUNE 2011

A toast to his friend, for he just bought a old hot-rod vintage speeder...

This was pretty fun to make, and I of course already have more on the bench.  They're more speeder bikes, though, so maybe this time they'll take less than, what, a year to finish? ;)

thanks so much for looking !!

Darthdaddy,
Clonehead,
FialaFernbrugg,

Thanks so much guys...
Coming from you three is big, you guys are great!
I love all of your work too...

I might not post a lot but I'm here everyday, checking out the great work you guys all do.
It's really inspiring to see how prolific everyone here is...
I just get blown away by the stuff you guys are doing!

I should have some more to show this weekend at some point, I've been working on a single-man closed speeder,
it's made from a GIJOE plane, and disposable razor handles and a lot of other bits... we'll see how it turns out!

Thanks so much Art deWhill and JediMerc... love your guy's stuff!  JediMerc, I really like that Mara Jade custom you did a while back.  You had a really, really cool Mando in there too!  Really great stuff.  And what more can be said about Art deWhill's artwork?  It's an honor to get compliments from you guys.

Here's one I started two or three weeks ago, pretty much finished up yesterday.   Maybe I'll add to it one day, but I think it came out nice.

This was a really, really cheap one to make, it only cost about US$7-8.  I got the GIJOE vehicle at Marshalls for $5, $2-3 for a roll of tape, and i just used just junk pieces of styrene, half empty spraypaint, and spare model parts for the rest.

BLUE PERSONAL SPEEDER - JULY 2011

He knows better than to speed in town, especially past a customs checkpoint.  And out-of-date identification as well? The tech arrives to for a full cavity search, ending his afternoon in embarrassment.

I really liked the blue of the original toy and wanted to incorporate it somehow.

Thanks so much Tamer!

I *wish* there was *one single good store* in my area.   I only got these because they were re-stocking the Times Square TRU when I arrived.  Since TVC Wave 2, I've had to order most of the figures on the internet, from China or Philippines at a mark up.   New Jersey has been historically one of the most scalper-heavy areas on earth since the POTF2 days. What most of you guys are dealing with now is what us folks in New York City and New Jersey have had to deal with pretty steady since 1995...

Anyway on a positive note, I'm going to do some more work on my first diorama, and start a new speeder bike based on the Mandalorian Deluxe Bike from a few months back!

I started two new customs last week.  One is the previously mentioned Mando speeder, and the other is a Joe-based one man vehicle.  I'll post pictures later this week when I can.  The Mando speeder bike is 90% done and will probably be posted first.  I also did some work on some non-star wars customs this weekend but nothing that will be photo-worthy for at least a year at my pace ;)

Here's a new one for you guys.  This is another little dio vehicle i cooked up.  I really like the way the front/engine came out.

IRIDONIAN SPEEDER  - AUG 2011

A Rebel veteran reluctantly lets his little friend borrow his vintage Iridorian Speeder.  "Not a scratch, man- it's over three hundred cycles old!"  The Chadra-Fan wonders how he would even be able to tell what was already there or not!

I got this vehicle for one dollar last winter, and it sat along with the other stuff in a box I had earmarked for trades.  Seeing as how the original toy is trash and no one wants one for any price, I wondered what I could do with it.  Originally I was going to paint a Zabrak to go with it, and decided to focus on making the vehicle cool on it's own, Maul free.

I thought the engine / front sensor array came out pretty nice.

"Alright, alright.  Here's the keycards.  Remember what I said. Not a scratch."

"Whatever."

Thanks for looking and I'm 75%+ through with a fun MANDALORIAN SPEEDER which I'll finish next week.  I hope. ;)

Doc it's just a bunch of weapons and other spare plastic bits glued to a styrene disc.  I had to use this Plaststruct ABS glue that is incredibly toxic to bind the acrylic and ABS to the styrene!

The final one is actually the third attempt and trying to make it as cool as possible took weeks of working every night to make the bits disappear into the model.

I did a bunch more paint work and part fitting on the speederbike I'm working on and hopefully if all goes well at work this week, it will be done in a few days!

Do it! They're so cheap.  It's a cool little vehicle, and really easy to disassemble.  Try TJ Maxx, they have tons of GI JOE stuff for incredibly cheap.  I passed Wednesday on a cool giant desert airplane for only $6, and there was a ton of Mole Pods red-tagged for $2.  This is in my area of NJ where all toys stores are picked daily with a fine toothed comb for anything of value/awesomeness.  I'm sure you'll find it around you! ;)

Y'know... I think I actually have one tucked off in storage.  Seems like I grabbed "Raid on the Pit" or something - had 4 or so figs and a Mole Pod.  (If I had known about TJ Maxx, I think I was right next door to one Sunday.  But it's well over an hour away from here...)

dag that sucks Doc.  Yeah TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross Stores, and Five Below seem to be the discount chains that have lots of older figures for really cheap, and if you hit them when they red-tag items you can find figures and vehicles for as little as $1.  Meijer stores are great for deep discounts in January and June when they discount everything toy wise.

I had an epic, epic collection of 25th ann. GI JOEs that I got from a Ross stores in PA in 2010 - I don't think I paid over $1 a piece for the figures and $3 for the battle packs.  I paid about $100 in total had most (if not all) of the main characters and vehicles I wanted.  I sold a lot of it online last year to fund my further cantina obsessions ;)

Work has held me up a bit the last 2 weeks on finishing that Mando speeder - glad to get some finally - but it just needs maybe a night's worth of work before it's done, so keep an eye out!

well this time I'm moving to Europe, and I've been trying really hard to figure out how I'm going to get my collection across the pond.

I have a BMF, the giant cantina spread in my collection thread... a ton of other 3.75 stuff... it's just insane to think of that, plus all the other japanese and other figures... it's tough picking between all this stuff.  Eventually I'll move it all as years pass, but I don't want to pay for a lot of stuff in storage fees an ocean away. anyway... I will be doing customs over there too, and definitely starting a diorama or two for my collection's permanent home ;)

thanks for looking!

I thought the engine / front sensor array came out pretty nice.

Hey, I was wondering if you would be able to tell me what kind of parts you used for the engine?

Sorry I miss this old question... being moving and I guess I missed this one.

The front "engine" is made of tons of little household bits, including a plastic cap, acrylic blocks, styrene, guns, transformers parts, and a plastic ball from a vending machine.

Thanks so much guys!
