custom dewback with custom sandtrooper
« on: June 25, 2011, 01:52:19 PM »
Hi All

Second post. I kinda got inspired by the recent images of the sideshow collectibles sandtrooper and dewback I thought I'd give the 3 3/4 figure something similar.

I was in fading light when I took the photos so sorry about the quality.

.

This is a POTF dewback which originally was magenta and green in colour.
My own view is that while the saddle is not movie accurate, it is the best model of the dewback in the 3 3/4 inch range.

So I painted the body a series of green yellow and brown colours. I put a black iris in each eye.
I painted the saddle and reins and silvered the buckles, water can and bridle.

I wrapped micropore tape on sections of the reins as per the movie to simulate repair.

and finally I mixed cotton wool with some silica gel and added black and brown paint. I then used PVA to glue it along the spine shoulders and flanks to simulate hair. The silca gel dries the paint very quickly so you are not left with a soggy mess to work with. I found applying the hair with cocktail sticks worked best.

The sandtrooper is a new stormtrooper from the 2011 collection primarily because he is very articulated. I used sparing amounts of brown, sand and ochre to weather him.

The dewback pike is a 2009/2010 sandtrooper version as the pike that came with the dewback is only good for pole vaulting.

Thanks for looking.

I use this combination too, the POTF Dewback and the TVC sandtrooper, they mate well together.

I like what you've done and I would love better, outside shots of it and of all the details you added.

I forgot to mention the original sandtrooper is now a headless corpse in my spares box robbed of his grey pauldron.

That's a really interesting idea about adding the soft fuzz that might likely grow on creatures like these.  Makes him appear more wild, untamed!

Nice work & welcome to the Yards!

Light side, dark side...meh.  Just give me a lightsaber and a blaster and I'll take care of it!

that looks really good and makes me want to work on mine a little. The only suggestion I would make is maybe spray the whole thing with some dull-coat to kill the shine on it, the ones in the movie didnt have that reptilian shine like snakes have. And of course thats just personal taste

Yeah

This was my first attempt. I have ordered another 2 on ebay so the next one will be an improvement and I will learn from my mistakes. I think I will reduce the brown colour on the skin introduce more shades of green.

The initial paint was using oil based colours. The next will be acrylics.

Thanks to all for the positive feedback.

Ok an overview of what I've done since the last photos.

the original dewback......picked up a couple on ebay

painted it a flat grey colour though I'm not sure if it could be declared primed as it still seems sorta shiney

The finished paint job using acrylics this time. Much better finish in my opinion compared to the original.

weathered a few sandtroopers as experiments didn't turn out too bad....like these troopers except their eye lenses too small.
The chocolate brownie atop the dewback is meant to be a fur covering for the saddle horns as per the movie...it's still drying but the jury is out as to whether it stays;
the camera flash hasn't done it justice to be fair. I will try again and get natural light photos up in the next couple of days.

I'm looking out for a hair alternative to the cotton wool experiment of the first dewback. My niece might find the hair of one of her dolls has suddenly got shorter but this
might provide a better effect as I found over time the cotton wool has become clumpy and not the way I envisaged the spinal hair to be.
