Title: Bubba Fett's Dios
Post by: Bubba Fett on March 02, 2013, 09:17:14 AM
This is Jessica's and my first dio. We made it about a month ago. We googled sw dio images and printed a photo of this one. We then had to figure out how in the heck to make a dio...lol. And if this was a pic of your dio, I apologize, but we had to start somewhere. We made some changes to the original photo concept. We added LED light to door, and cardboard backdrops to add depth and the illusion of a larger than 20"x12" dio base. I grew up with Kenner cardboard playsets so I like using cardboard. The cardboard slides out easily to change scenes. The moisture vaporator is made from mini-blinds, washers, foam, wall anchor, and precision paint brush handles. The building structure is made of foam board, bandages, and lightweight spackle. Then white-wash paint. The building is also removable for future customization. The son is enjoying it so far. Improvement ideas and tips are welcome!

So the bottom one is yours? That is cool as hell. You really have to look to tell em apart and if you hadn't told us, I would have swore that moisture evaporator was a factory hasbro item. Welcome to the diorama board!
Once you confirm which is yours I will put it on the front page.

Both photos are of mine. I just changed the figs. The one picture did not show the LED light on the door panel so I changed things up. Sorry for the confusion.

Great work on this diorama. You guys did a fantastic job on capturing the feel of Tatooine, which is my personal favorite of the SW planets. This would be outstanding for a seasoned veteran, but the fact that this is a FIRST diorama.... Wow!
It doesn't surprise me that your son absolutely enjoys this. It's super cool of ya'll as parents to make something like this for him to play with.
I've seen tons of Tatooine dios, and this is up there with the best of them. I would have also thought the moisture vaporator was from Hasbro.
A+ on all aspects of this!

Barry

Well now if that isn't just great. Glad to see it made the front page.

And Spooky for the life of me I am not sure if yours did so I might be way late in saying awesome job on yours too. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery.

Very cool! You made your own version of Spooky's dio! Very nice work, as Barry said, you have bone a great job capturing the feel of Tatooine. If this is your first dio, you certainly have the skill set to knock several more buildings out of the park. Then you can group them together in different configurations every time "the kids" play. Small modular sets are the way to go for playability and storage. Great work!

Spooky, it is so cool to find the artist behind the photo we found on google images. We hope you are not offended that we chose your dio to make our first attempt. And we hope you approve. I only wish we were able to know you then so we could ask how to make it...lol. Showing the photo to the hobby lobby employee and asking how to do it was embarassing. Spooky, we would be honored by any critiquing you would have. And we apologize but we could not see that yours had a light on the door. We could not see that from the google image that we printed.

no, I'm not offended at all, I'm flattered and you did a great job of doing one similar!

When i saw the pic on the FP I was like "hummmmm, is that mine?"

Yours is very cool. If you follow my build thread you'll see the lighted panel.

No, sir. With it being our first dio, the chaos overwhelmed us. It did not cross our minds to do something like that. But I would bet that Spooky would have WIP pics of his original.

This is Jess's and my newest dio. As I've said, I like the vintage stuff, so I am enjoying taking a vintage playset piece and customizing around it. For this one, I used the Land of the Jawas as my inspiration to make a custom "Purchase of the Droids". The Land of the Jawas sancrawler is actually a custom repro we made from foamboard, adhesive label paper. We cut out the windows, then we added a cardboard desert backdrop, steps, door, and lights. I purchased all of the droids from eBay, even the LIN droid from Clint. Without needing this LIN I would have never met Clint and been invited to join this site. Thanks Clint! The only droid that is not original is the security droid. We made this one because we wanted to continue the theme of lights from the sandcrawler and the house. Some photos are taken in room full light, room dimmed light, and no light on in the room. Tips and hints are always welcome on our projects. We are always seeking ways to improve!

Buddy, this piece is exquisite in its execution and design. I love that you integrated the repro backdrop that reminds some of us older folks of an easier time and a more exciting time for SW. The integration of the lights is well done and I especially like them in the security droid. I love the hut and have to ask, what did you use the transparancy paper for. The junk/fodder outside the hut adds a personal and realistic touch. You had asked me for suggestions. All I can come up with is consider installing some heavy gauge wire scraps for foot pegs if you have an idea where to put all of the characters, and, possibly upgrade that R5 unit to a more modern version. I really had to dig to come up with that much as I like this one so much. You are not going to tell me that this is your second dio attempt, are you?

Clint, thanks for the improvement ideas. I went through some boxes in the basement and found a packaged Saga R5. I will make that change. I will also look at the footpegs. The transparancy paper was used on the door front of the hut. The lightbulbs could be seen through the door so I hot glued a piece of transparancy paper across the entrance that I had taken an orange marker to. This allows the light to come through without seeing the lightbulbs. I also did this with the windows of the sandcrawler. Thanks again!

Gorgeous display/dio.  Excellent combination of elements and very, very nice work on your custom homestead!

The lighting adds SO MUCH texture and realism, too.

Wonderful work!!!

Another great dio! I love the entrance to the Lars' Homestead. The only suggestion I would make is to put some dry sand around the base of the domed structure.
Again, great work!

Well, I am sure you are all aware by now that I prefer taking vintage playset parts and improving them...or at least I think improving them...lol. For this diorama playset, I started with an incomplete Creature Cantina base. I wanted to achieve a nice looking diorama but still with a playset vibe. The roof, walls, and dome cap easily slide apart.

(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Creature%20Cantina/0swcantina1_zps13009f4f.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Creature%20Cantina/0swcantina1_zps13009f4f.jpg.html)

Next I printed a vintage cardboard back scan. Then went to work with paints: primer, faux textured stone floor, airbrush tables with multiple colors/shadowing.

(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Creature%20Cantina/DSCN3985_zps69ecf094.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Creature%20Cantina/DSCN3985_zps69ecf094.jpg.html)

Rear view of playset. This is a full 360 deg. view playset. This was a little tricky to achieve since I wanted to use cardboard backdrop from from view to show depth. So I had to use a rear view photo also. To accomplish this I simply used a razor knife to cut a slit on this inside of the arch and placed the front and rear view cardboard photos.

(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Creature%20Cantina/DSCN3874_zps2e562fb0.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Creature%20Cantina/DSCN3874_zps2e562fb0.jpg.html)
Scene with room lights and playset lights off. I just threw some of my fodder figures in here for effect.

Scene with room lights and Cantina lights on. I used 2 removable LED lights in the ceiling. I tinted them blue for a realistic bar lighting effect.

Man! Bubba this stuff is superb! The use of the vintage playsets is simply the only way to go here. It creates that OT feel in a way that nothing else can. The updating and lighting is fantastic! To echo what a few have said, that lit-up sentry droid makes the whole piece for me. Such a simple thing that makes all the difference!

My son was tired of some of his favorite modern figures sitting on a plain shelf, so we decided to make some small 8"x4" dio displays for him. I did not want to get too extravagent, so each took about a day to complete. These small dios are a great way to get your kids involved in creating dios. This particular plaster is very user friendly for sculpting.

Since we wanted to keep it simple, we had to have simple supplies: papertowel roll, 8"x4" foam for base, blocks of foam, Lightweight plaster, bandages, paint, printed cardboard backdrops, etc...
(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Small%20Dios/DSCN4118_zpsada40fe5.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Small%20Dios/DSCN4118_zpsada40fe5.jpg.html)
We started with the easiest: His Tusken Raiders on Tatooine. The backdrops are easily swapped out if he wants a change of scenery. They are held in place by modified paperclips.
(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Small%20Dios/DSCN4119_zps41640b5c.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Small%20Dios/DSCN4119_zps41640b5c.jpg.html)

Next we tackled some of his Hoth figures. I don't know if you can see them on the rear rock, but the icesicles are made of stretched hot glue.
(http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/waxxell/Small%20Dios/DSCN4121_zps76e6a86f.jpg) (http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/waxxell/media/Small%20Dios/DSCN4121_zps76e6a86f.jpg.html)

We are both big fans of Battlefront video game, so we decided on a Mygeeto complete with a command post and barrier. The command post is made so a light can be added for effect. (I will install a small LED light to the base later, for now, I want to keep it simple.)
