Title: Adywan's Star Wars Revisited - DVD Review
Post by: hangarbay94 on January 14, 2011, 03:50:17 AM
(http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv191/hangarbay94/Imperial%20Shipyards%20Stuff/SW4Revisited_Adywan_3D2.jpg)

After being told about this Fan made edit by Wraith9 I tracked down the DVD version which is free to download and burn straight onto DVD, provided you own the Lucasfilm version. I will post the link to the download page and try to explain how to burn the files onto disc at the end of the review.

For those of you who have not seen it, Star Wars Re-Visited is a fan made special edition of Star Wars A New Hope. Incredibly its creator 'Adywan' has brought the movie right up to date by adding new scenes and special effects and a more realistic and involving Dolby Surround Sound experience.

Believe me when I say this production does not look like an amateur piece of work, even before you play the film you'll find a new home screen and intro sequences with a full interactive menu. The disc has special features, giving an insight into the creative process involved in creating the movie edit.

Picture and Sound Quality
Now onto the movie itself. I played the film on a Sony BluRay player through a Hitachi Digital HD projector and onto a 7-foot wide projector screen, and the first thing that hits you is the clarity of the picture. On such a large screen it is usually easy to see the difference between BluRay (HiDef) and standard DVD movies, yet with this production it could easily have passed as a BluRay disc.  Colours were vibrant and crisp and even in close up the detail was noticeably improved . During the opening scenes where Princess Leia programmed R2 with the Death Star plans I noticed that the background computer lights had been enhanced, and it is this attention to detail that gives the movie a much fresher look. There is no noticeable digital fuzz on the picture at all and I can't see the BluRay version being any improvement on this production.

The digital soundtrack is presented in Dolby 5.1 and the improvements are instantly noticeable. I played the film through a Cambridge Audio Azure 650 HD Amplifier, and again the soundtrack had all of the detail of an HD disc. Rather than sounding flat like the DVD version, Adywan has managed to create a wonderfully detailed sound experience. Bass effects are magnificent, lasers seem to bounce around the room and there are tons of small details that give the viewer a much more immersive experience.

The Fan Edit

As a life long Star Wars fan I can honestly tell you that this is how the film was meant to be shown, every care has been taken to add what is needed and remove what is not and it has been done with respect to both the the original and Special Edition versions. Adywan has also added new special effects that blend perfectly with the film, some of which are so subtle that they are hardly noticeable. For example during the scene where R2 wakes up on-board the Jawa sandcrawler the broken head of a Clone Wars Droid soldier can be seen in the foreground, it's only seen for a second at most. There are numerous tiny tweaks you would have to look hard to notice and that is part of the fun, where as before you would have to forgive the film for it's 70's production values, this version stands shoulder to shoulder with the prequels.

There have been major changes too, the scene where Alderran is destroyed has been totally re-done and I was totally blown away when I saw the new scene. Rather than the Superlaser firing and the planet blowing up Buck Rogers style (lots of bright sparks) this time you actually see the close up shots of the planet coming apart with continents splitting, culminating in a huge, high definition explosion.  The whole revised edit makes the Death Star seem far more ominous.

My favourite re-working is the light-sabre duel  between Vader and Obi Wan. Adywan has re-cut the scene so that there is much more pace. He's also cleverly mixed music in from Episode 3, tying the scene with the Mustafar battle. The whole thing is very emotional.

We now lead on to the Falcon escape scene. Adywan has again managed to completely re-work the effects, adding sections where the Falcon is actually seen moving through space fighting the ties off. There is much more movement, and the whole battle looks like it was part of Lucas's Special Edition, and not the work of someone on his home PC. I cannot stress how spectacular these additions are, you need to see them for yourself.

Now onto the crescendo, the Death Star battle. I won't give too much away, but let's just say that this scene has been totally transformed. Not only has it been re-edited to give it a faster pace, stunning and dramatic effects have been added too. Rather than a handful of tie fighters entering the frey, this time there's a whole swarm of them, all flying headlong towards the screen, the effect is too much to describe in words.  Cockpit shots have been transformed and we see fighters everywhere. The whole scene is a marvel yet all of the new effects work in harmony with the original effects.

When hearing Adywan interviewed about the effects he explained that none of it was CGI, it was simply cut-outs of the movie models rendered in Adobe Aftereffects, which is probably why the added sequences look as if they were part of the original film.

In summation, if you are a Star Wars fan this movie version is a MUST SEE. While being a homage to this film, it also puts Lucasfilm to shame, in fact it also puts the whole BluRay format to shame. The culmination of perfectly crafted additional effects and scenes, crystal clear picture and energetic and involving sound score  make this the definitive Star Wars version.

How to Download and Play

Here is a link to Adywan's Facebook page giving some pointers on how to download and burn the movie to disc. http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=316830255423&topic=16278 (http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=316830255423&topic=16278)

The movie is free to Download but remember you need to own the official DVD version to be allowed to download this version (as if any of us doesn't already own the Video Box Set, the DVD Box Set, the Special Edition Box Set  and the Special, Special Edition Box Set with the original version already)...

Firstly you will need a free program called FINAL TORRENT here is the link: http://www.finaltorrent.com/ (http://www.finaltorrent.com/)

It is advisable to have a broadband connection for this as the files total 7.8Gb and take about 24 hours to download.

Here is the link to move file. once you have installed Final Torrent you can select "TORRENT DOWNLOAD" here: http://www.kickasstorrents.com/star-wars-iv-a-new-hope-revisited-adywan-pal-dvd9-dual-layer-t3283394.html (http://www.kickasstorrents.com/star-wars-iv-a-new-hope-revisited-adywan-pal-dvd9-dual-layer-t3283394.html)

When you have saved the Torrent File click on it and Final Torrent will open. Select the Downloads button and there you will see the Star Wars Revised file in the queue. Select it and press Start. If the download is interrupted you can always go back to the Downloads tab and re-start it.

When complete you should find the file sitting in My Documents / My Downloads. You will need to extract it, and most new versions of windows will do this by right clicking on the file and selecting "Extract Here".

Once extracted the Star Wars revisited folder should contain several movie files and image files. The image files are disc and cover art, for those of us who are anal enough to want to have the film presented in a DVD case.  The files need to be burned straight onto a Dual Layer DVD +R disc using a program like Nero. I used PowerLink Power-to-Go to burn my version. Select the slowest burn speed. I cannot advise you on how the different burning software will work, but you just need to make sure that you are burning the folders to the disc and not creating a movie disc.

This is how I burned the disc using Cybermedia's Power-to-go (which came free on my HP PC)
First off make sure you know the location of the extracted Star Wars Revisited folder (it should be called 'STAR_WARS_REVISITED_PAL_DVD_9')

I then opened Power To Go and selected the 'Video / Photodisc option. then I selected the 'Burn DVD Folder' option
(http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv191/hangarbay94/Imperial%20Shipyards%20Stuff/Burn1.jpg)

Then I was asked to browse for the location of the Folder I wanted to burn to the disk. So I selected the extracted Star Wars Revisited_PAL_DVD_9 Folder, making sure I opted for the slowest burn speed.

The I just pressed BURN! and hey presto it worked...

When the disc is burned this should be the contents...

Once completed, simply take the disc to your DVD player, inset and enjoy.....

How to View

This film must be seen in a dark room, with no screaming kids or nagging wife anywhere near. Watch it in its entirety, you'll enjoy every second of it I promise!

An exelent idea to feature this film edit! I have seen it on youtube but will have to download it now. The scenes are exelent and very well done. Why has Lucas Film not scooped this guy up and offered him a job?

okay, I DLd this and extracted everything then I opened the VIDEO_TS folder and inside were 175 files various versions of VTS files.....okay, now, can someone explain to me where I go from here, preferably someone with Nero......How do I burn these so the DVD player can read it?
I used to be pretty good doing this stuff but it's been years since I'd done it.
Title: Re: Adywan's Star Wars Revisited - DVD Review
Post by: hangarbay94 on January 15, 2011, 02:29:58 AM
Spooky, the easiest way to explain it would be this...

if you were to get a DVD and rather than play it you were to explore the contents, you'd see a bunch of files, just the same files that are im the extracted Star Wars Revisited file.

So its quite straightforward really, you just need to burn the contents of the Star Ward Revisited  folder onto the disc.

If I get a moment later I'll do a screen capture of my disc's contents...

okay, so when I burn it I need to burn it as a movie DVD on a DL DVD-R right?
Title: Re: Adywan's Star Wars Revisited - DVD Review
Post by: hangarbay94 on January 15, 2011, 01:07:58 PM
You'll know if you're doing it right as you'll be asked for the location of the files you wish to burn to the disc. You'll need to browse and locate your extracted Star Wars Revisited folder and select it. Then burn. Remember to select the slowest possible burn speed.

If you're still not sure then why not do a screen capture of the Nero burn screen and post it here, I'll take a look and see if you are doing it right.

well...........after 4 unsuccessful attempts, and 4 wasted DL DVD-Rs at $3ea I am ready to give up. I dont know if it's my PC (probably) or if the download is corrupt but NERO gets about 3/4 through and then fails. The buffer goes from 98% to 0 at the same time. So, going to try one more time on my wifes laptop and then I'm giving up.

Another disc bites the dust and 3 more dollars down the toilet.

okay.....I burned all 175 VTS files onto a DL DVD-R, so the files are right on the disk, but no players can read it........do I have to have the files inside of a Video_TS and Audio_TS folders on the DVD, because I burned the VTS files right onto the DVD-R.

Spooky,

No! you are doing it wrong. Hold on for a few hours and I will do a screen grab of what the contents of my discs have on them. It is hard to explain but easy to show.

So far I've burned 2 discs without a hitch...

I promise you, if you get it right your 4 wasted disks will not have been in vain...

If you fail again PM me your address and I'll burn you a copy and send it to you myself.

yup, I'm giving up on this, NERO will select "DVD" mode automatically when it reads the VTS files, it burns at 2X speed with no option for any other speed. I just dont think my PC is up to this. My wife has a HP laptop with Vista witch I'm almost positive could burn this correctly but I dont know where the burn software is on it and I dont know how to use it (I dont use vista on my PC, I like and stick with XP Pro....

I can watch it directly off the files tho on my PC and it is AMAZING!

They did an incredible job on it. I only have two things I would have liked to be changed....the scene where Luke and Biggs are talking in the hanger could have been left out and it's too bad they didnt fix the light reflection off R2s dome when he and Chewie are playing chess

But it's an awesome cut, and it will be my go-to version :)

Finally got around to doing this AND getting it to work.  (Took me 3 discs--so like they say, "Third time is the charm.")

The video quality was great on this one.  There were a few small continuity glitches where things were changed here and there; but if I weren't aware of the changes I wonder if I'd have even noticed.

I didn't see any video alterations which I didn't like, and some alterations were down right "rewarding" to see, if that makes sense.  I think many-a old school fan will understand what I'm getting at after seeing it for themselves.

There was one predominant "audio" issue which bothered me throughout though.  I'd be curios if anyone else thought something was a bit off there.  Regardless, I'll be popping this version in for future viewing every now and then.

Glad to have been informed of this.

i finally managed  to watch this all the way thru   and was awesome  !  i loved all the touches and changes  like when the Tantive IV is hit having the ship shudder and the engines go out to  giving some of the cantina denizens  blinking eyes and facial movement!  ,to changing it so that Dr Evezan get his arm lopped off (and no blood just a cauterised amputation ) to the fantastic death star exteriors and making the Dianoga blink! plus giving the falcon waaaay more movement in the deathstar escape scenes  and the utterly fanbloodytastic Battle of Yavin  ,the changes are waaaaaay to numerous to mention but i guarantee you this, EVERY time you watch this you will spot something new!   you have to remember this is a fan edit ... but bloody hell!    its by far and away the best  one i have ever seen .hes even revisited the flamin menu's!.

BR : i didnt notice any audio issues on my copy whatsoever mate and i was running it thru a 5.1 prologicII set up   .the only issue i had was with the music in the Vader/Old Ben duel  i felt it was everso slightly muddled ,but that was about it .

oh and no more Greedo shoots first cobblers either!!   yaaaaay!

I like that they fixed it and made Luke say "blast it wedge, where are you"....that always bugged me. I also liked Luke screaming "Biggs!" when he gets blasted into bits was cool.

Based on the low number of responses in the last few days, I'll go ahead and say what my issues were with the film.  I didn't want to plant a seed in anyone's mind that might prohibit a first time viewer from an enjoyable experience--and this fan edit IS an enjoyable experience.  Sometimes if something deemed negative is pointed out to someone that might not have noticed anything before, once they hear it, they can't "un-hear" it.  Anyway, if you haven't already watched this fan edit once, I recommend NOT reading the rest of my post.

Now that that is out of the way:

In my mind, the voices of Owen, Luke and Han had almost a chipmunk like quality throughout most of their dialog.  It was subtle, but there.  Owen's seemed that way every time he spoke.  Luke and Han had lines that seemed normal in my ear; but that sped up/slowed down Alvin-Simon-Theodore sound plagued the entire movie.  Beru's voice actually sounded like it was dubbed over by someone else.

Wraithnine: I suppose it's possible something about my sound system caused me to notice/imagine this; but I'd suspect I'd have heard something similar in my many other copies of this movie.  (Who doesn't own at least 3-4 dang copies of this movie?  LOL!)  Plus, that none of the other character voices seemed to sound this way to me, doesn't seem to support the idea of a bad data transfer or improper sound system setup.   :-\

You're right about that.  I almost hesitated sharing my issue on the forums because there is just SO much that's great about this edit--wrongs that were righted, added effects and etc--that my issues pale in comparison.  Still, I will remain curious if others feel they hear the same thing.

I did hear something "different" in the audio but it wasnt sped up sound tracks, it was how much more bright and pronounced the dialogue was, not as muddled as the originals, for example, in the cantina when the troopers talk to the bartender, I never heard exactly what they said other then "we'll check it out", I never heard "I heard you had a problem in here?" before. There are other things as well. I also liked how they changed "this ones locked move on to the next one", that needed to be changed as it didnt make any sense either...
But over all the sound was cleaner and more crisp.

I am watching mine right now. It is so much more clear! Vader's voice sounded a little off to me in the opening scene, but I think that is me trying to nitpick. For the life of me the visual effects (like R2's green lights on his dome that I haven't seen before) just blow me away. I would love to have two tvs side by side and play this and the other version to pick everything out. It is amazing.

Holy cow, I just got done with this and I was blown away. It was worth getting it just for the Battle of Yavin alone and there is so much more to it. I loved seeing those effects of the falcon fighting off the ties too. It was amazing and is hard to believe that this was not professionally done. Seeing this gives me hope that the fans will take the movies in the right direction whether George does or not!

If you have not downloaded and viewed this yet, you do not know what you are missing. It is awesome.

I can only hope this person will do the same thing for The Empire Strikes Back.

This is now the episode with the most effects and the premiere one to have because of this. This is like how I felt when I saw they were adding in new scenes when they rereleases the Original Trilogy. Cmon Adywan do this for all of the OT!

For those of you in the states you'll probably need the NTSC version. I also think it's advisablet to burn the film onto DVD-R discs.

Clint, your new copy will be with you within the next 7 days...

I saw that on youtube earlier today and got all excited, this should be great if he's done as good as he did on ANH.

I'm almost afraid to say it but I might have to buy a copy from Jules this time

Folks, I am not sure the video is loading ok on the front page due to a work firewall that blocks most videos, can someone tell me if it is loading up?

Thank You. I sent out queries, but as work firewalls prevent me from seeing them I couldn't be sure.

I have a copy of A New Hope Revisited and upon hearing the announcement about Empire Strikes Back getting the treatment I'm just as excited about this release as I am about the Sagas Blu-ray release.  Possibly even more excited.  A must see for any Star Wars fan!!

Me too!  I can't wait to see this. The first thing I did after re-hinging my jaw on ANH was say daggone I sure hope he does TESB.

Here is a chance to do so.

Downloaded Final Torrent.  Got the torrent file from Hangerbay94's link and these files are sitting in my My Documents / My Downloads file.  When I open the first file "Star_Wars_Revisited_PAL_DVD_9", it is opened using Nero to burn right to a DVD.  I'm waiting on some Dual Layer DVD Rs to arrive in the mail, but anyone tell me if I'm on the right track?

BTW, this thread is the primary reason I joined Imperial Shipyards.  If I can get this burned, I'll be a very happy man.

We uploaded a float away with the junk scene that Ady let us use yesterday.

I agree, his rendition is helping to sway my blu ray anxiety.

We will have to get Jules to comment on that download, but it looks like you are on the right track to me.

I'm hoping I'm on the right track.  I don't want to waste too many DL DVD Rs.  We'll see tonight when I get my discs.  They came in today, earlier than expected.  If all goes well, I might be up late tonight watching ANH: Revisited while the family is asleep.

Burned it last night and it works perfectly.  Unfortunately it won't play in my PS3 but it will in my DVD Recorder.  PS3 said it can't play PAL files.

Watched it with the "extras" on so I could read what changes he made.

Can't wait for ESB.  Any word if it will be done soon?

IThere is an NTSC version of the movie flying around, but it's not at as high resolution...
Title: Re: Adywan's Star Wars Revisited - DVD Review
Post by: BEAM on September 05, 2011, 08:13:33 PM
I looked into converting the PAL file to NTSC but there were a couple bits of software I'd have to download and it didn't seem worth the trouble.  I prefer playing DVDs through the PS3 to maintain the digital signal into the digital TV, but for this I'll get by.  Still looks great.

I could have done without the music and sped up fighting between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader.  But overall, I really enjoy his edits.  I had wished he could have put Wolfman back into the cantina instead of the hippie lizard.

to see even more images like this

and to get the most up to date information on what for me will mean more than the new Blu-Ray releases. George needs to give this guy a job.

Have to say that I am over the Moon (of Endor?) with this new version of the film. Many thanks for detailing how to access and download it. It took three attempts but I finally got it to work this morning. What a fantastic way to start the yer, right?
So having created a DVD version of this masterpiece one obvious question in this I-Pad age is: is there anyway of using the downloaded files that are on the computer to watch the film in I Tunes to transfer across to the IPad?
Would be delighted to hear from anyone with regard to this.
Happy New Year!

I haven't downloaded the files, but I'm guessing that they're set up for easy DVD transfer, with an Audio and Video folder.  If that is the case, it's easy enough to zap the whole thing into an .mov format for Quicktime or iTunes through the use of Handbrake. (http://handbrake.fr/)

re putting this into iPad format, I use a program called DVD Catalalyst. Once you've put it onto DVD you can use the software to convert it into almost any file /divice format you like!

So I've tried and failed several times. I get a file that plays the audio but not the video. There does not seem to be anything to extract when I do download it. I've downloaded the files to a DL disc but nothing can read them.  I've followed all of the advice and nothing works. (I hate my computer) Can someone send me a copy?
