I'm currently creating playsets for my action figures to live in with a moldable plastic called Instamorph.

Wow!!
I want every one of these. Great job!
-
I like those ^^
-
Thanks for the comments, glad you like!
-
Wow, these are off the charts! Oh yes, I must share this on our front page and facebook page. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Do you make special vintage boxes for these playsets too?
And welcome to ISY!
-
WOW These are amazing !!! def. off the charts i would love to have these in my collection . Welcome to the yards
-
Thanks for such glowing reviews! Feel free to share. I haven't made boxes for them yet - just photoshopped them for my website - and for fun. It's an involving process, but I'm having a great time doing these. Wish I had more free time - these certainly take a while to construct!
-
These are awesome. I can only hope you may one day think about molding some of these and making some to sell. These would go like hotcakes!
-
May look into offering at least something or another for sale at some point, once I feel confident enough in my work. If only Hasbro would hire me and let me spend every day designing SW playsets! I'd be one happy camper.

Amen to that. I don't know who could end their negativity when it comes to playsets, but these are awesome. You even got a comment from Starconstrux Dioramas on our facebook page.
-
Thats Jabbas Palace set is so freaking cool, id be interested in getting one too. Top stuff!
-
These are all superb creations! I can't understand why there haven't been more posts as these are so inventive. Thanks for sharing.
-
WOW! These sets are so awesome! They have a vintage feel to them but have had a slight upgrade in playability. I am stunned by how "factory made" they look. I would also like to hear more about this material you use to create these. Very nice work and I can't wait to see more!
-
Wow, ya'll are quite an ego boost! Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm not Hasbro, but I think they're neat little creations that do just what I want them to do.
I've added a FB page that will mirror what I put on the website...
https://www.facebook.com/swplasticplaysets
And just yesterday I added a page about working with the Instamorph material...
http://swplaysets.bugs3.com/workingwithinstamorph.htm
-
I don't know if you have ever heard of our podcast called Custom Action Figure News ,but I can think of about twenty questions I have right now about the materials and some of what you have created if you would like to talk about this on air. I got lost in your site for a few hours yesterday.
-
awesome job love all of these :)
-
WOW very very impressive indeed.
Ron
-
Thanks guys, your complements are appreciated! Will think about the Podcast thing - I can't say I've ever been asked to be a guest on a show!
Bespin finished up today - pics at: https://www.facebook.com/swplasticplaysets --- will post them to the website when I get time.

I'm floored, man! :o These are awesome! I'm currently in the planning stages of making a Jabba's palace for my son, and trying to balance detail vs. durability, playability, etc. Your playsets have me thinking! Does instamorph respond well to sanding and tooling?
-
Thanks, hope this helps you pull off something cool. I've read it responds well to sanding and tooling. Sometimes it seems sanding helps clean it up, other times not. Maybe it has to do with the type of coloring I'm using? As for tooling, I know Drimmel things won't work - it melted the plastic. I have drilled out a few small holds well, though. Haven't tried anything else.
-
Hoth was melted down and re-shaped into "Hoth 2.0" - it's not all that different from the first version - more textured ice, better looking interior floors, and a computer.

-
I had hoped to have some plastic time over Labor Day, but my newly rebuilt deck needed staining instead. I did get a basic layout drawn of the next piece, though.

-
Wow, awesome update. Hated to hear the deck got in the way of this! :D
Off to share.
-
Sensational work on the Hoth playset and I just checked your site and all the playsets are just amazing.
Ron
-
Just fantastic! I actually thought that these were original Kenner playsets that never made it to the shops. I really cannot believe the quality and the retro styling is simply fantastic.
-
Thanks for the comments! I don't know if I feel that they're quite Kenner caliber, but they at least make nice prototypes! Hope to get going with the Podrace Arena very soon.
-
Your new version of the hoth set is amazing! I love how you integrated the Luke and Wampa pieces and the bacura tank.
-
Your new version of the hoth set is amazing! I love how you integrated the Luke and Wampa pieces and the bacura tank.
I have to agree with Clint. I can't believe I haven't seen this till this morning. That playset is amazing. I would love to see a shot of your shelf display areas with all these dios in them. I would order two of that Hoth Playset! You have got to be pretty pleased with the results you are getting.
I would love to invite you to podcast with us at a future date (well into the new year at this point) as I think folks would love to hear how you got the idea to do this and hear about your customizing journey. I love the vintage graphics you are creating too. I would love to see boxes made for these to fit in. Have you ever thought about creating some vintage packaging for your great playsets?
On the front page again. I will try to do a better job seeing these. It sure does bring a smile to my face remembering my old Kenner days.
-
Thanks again for the kind words. I'm leaning towards "yes" for your podcast -- will be in touch soon.
For now, I've crafted a piece using some leftover plastic and put it up for auction. I've named it "Forest Ambush" - and certainly works well for a small Endor scene. Of course other action figures look great on it, too...

I also started work on the Podrace Arena this morning. Here's the start of the bleacher section...

-
More plastic goodness to look over and as with your other playsets these are awesome. Just out of curiosity have you done other playsets or thought about other playsets from other movies.
Ron
-
Jrny Fan I posted on this ebay dio on our front page and our facebook page. I hope we can start you off good on this so we can see more environments. I would think any Hoth one would sell well on ebay too.
-
Thanks for the publicity :)
I really don't have much interest in doing stuff from other films. SW is the only thing I'll ever collect. But I have thought this stuff would make an awesome Cobra Temple or Decepticon Headquarters... ;)
-
The backside of the Arena bleachers is moving along. Here's an almost-done Watto's shop...

Ron

Took today off work and spent a few hours shaping the announcer tower...

Wow, looks great to me. Gave your new Facebook Site a shout out on the front page too.
-
More great work, I really like how you mold the plastic to the way you want it.
Ron
-
Moving along slowly with the tower. Added some screens inside with some labels attached, some equipment neasr the roof, and a camera device that pivots.

-
Don't stop making these awesome creations mate.
Ron
-
You can read what I think about this on the front page!
-
Thank you all for the kind words, as always!
The viewing platform is built. It (not gracefully) can move up and down the pole. I think I did pretty poorly with the platform design (circles and sphere type shapes are very difficult to work with) - but that can always be replaced in the future.
Will likely be a few weeks before another update - have lots on on my calendar coming up.

A little extra time this morning, got started on Jabba's box.
I'm about to go through a massive job change (after 15 years in my current position), so plastic may be on the back-burner for a few months...

So sorry to hear that!
-
It actually should be a good thing, once I get settled!
Did a touch more on Jabba's box...

Looks good to me.
Good luck with the new job.
-
As always awesome work.
Ron
-
really awesome sets once again. These are great and remind me of the vintage play sets.
-
And a tad bit more done on Jabba's box. The red hanging in the back of the box hopefully looks like the curtains hanging in the film...
-
Great update! Love your playsets, the material must be like Worbla the cosplayers use.
-
I just love these dio's, you have captured all of the magic of the original Star Wars toys. They look totally professional, just superb!
-
Nice update to the box. Off to share.
-
Great update mate, I can't wait to see more.
Ron
-
Very Nice... ;D
Am Much Impressed !! 8)
-
Thanks for the kudos, guys! I'm going through the job change in the next 2 weeks, so plastic is on the backburner for the moment. Hopefully will get back to it in December. Want to get this Podrace Arena finished up so I can move on to my next big one: The Death Star!
-
Had a few spare hours this morning and I managed to get the frame going for the Podrace garage, below Jabba's box...

Looks great. Off to share.
I really enjoy seeing true plastic playset. I think you are onto such a good thing. I so wish Hasbro would go back to doing something like this to give us Kenner boys some nostalgia.
-
Love this one as well!
-
I'm thankful I had a little time to work on plastic over Thanksgiving. The interior of the Podrace garage is just about done. One of the tubes moves/swivels so you can take it out and fill up a Podracer.

WOW these pics are amazing, your work with plastic is outstanding.
Ron
-
These are shaping up nicely! Love the playability of this one and all of your dioramas.
-
I agree with Spry. This brings me back to my Kenner days. Bravo. Off to share.
-
The problem with this playset creation stuff is that it's totally addicting! I couldn't help but sneak up just a bit more work today - this will likely be my last update til after Christmas (when I hope to have enough time to finish the Arena off). I'm sure you can gather what this part this is shaping up to be. The second photo shows how it will fit into the overall playset (which is becoming quite large). Thanks for everyone's continued support! Glad you're enjoying them!

Excellent work mate.
Ron

I should be creating some documents for my new job, but ehh --- why not take a break with some plastic?
Slave quarters about done, and the frog cart is moving right along.

Looks great to me. Off to share yet again. Looks like you are getting really close on this.
-
Love that Tatooine envirionment. It straddles the line between looking lika an official toy and having that more detailed 'diorama' look, and it also matches well with both modern and vintage Star Wars toy design...a great balance.
-
Glad it's going over well! While I'm waiting for some spare time to work some more, how about a few more photos of the work in progress?

Impressive work yet again mate you are the master of the plastic that is for sure.
Ron
-
Nice. Ah it must feel good to just go and make whatever playset you want. Off to share.
-
And it's done! (for now). A Christmas treat!
Podrace garage has a moveable hose you can use to re-fill your Podracer. Also features a removable bucket of "goop." The announcer tower has monitors inside and a rotating camera. Atop the bleachers, the observation platform (already planning to re-do this part) moves up and down. Watto's shop features an "arm" you can grasp Watto with to simulate flying. The slave quarters street doesn't really do much but look cool. Behind the garage is a place for the Frog vendor counter.

superb work!

Sensational mate.

Congratulations and a job well done. Off to share this.

Wow, that's off the chart amazing. What a true SHAME it is that Hasbro refuses to make things this cool.

What a true SHAME it is that Hasbro refuses to make things this cool.
That is why its so cool to have customizers like this to show you just what you can create.
-
Thanks for the comments! Glad to have Mos Espa finished. I tinkered a bit this morning to get an early start on the next playset. The action mechanism didn't work as well as I'd hoped, so this will likely be re-done. But, it's a start :)
-
Well that looks pretty cool. Time to go share that too. You sure didn't leave the dust settle long did you!
-
Your Mos Espa is simply amazing!
-
Not much to look at, but did a great deal of design work on the Death Star. Should be about as large as the Terror Drome, plus a couple of "stories." This is the "bottom half"...
*this is a prototype made of posterboard and cardboard.

I really can't wait to see your Death Star. I wish Hasbro would also take notice at how things like this could be done... it's a shame just how out of touch they are.

Sweet! Looks great so far to me. Off to share.

Love your mock up and can't wait to see more!

I can't wait to see this one take shape.

Every project starts with the first piece and there it is! You really all have us hooked with this one.
-
Two words, Emperors arrival!
-
Looking good and as Shawn said you have us hooked, I can't wait to see more.
Ron
-
Just a tad bit more done today.
Tried plastic spraypaint on a sample piece today to see how well the Instamorph would take it. Seems to do okay. Covers up air bubble discolorations it seems. I may spraypaint the black Death Star floors to give them that uniform shiny black look. The problem is once it's painted, the Instamorph no longer is re-usable - unless you scrape all the paint off - which I doubt is an option with this "plastic" spraypaint.
-
Looks like great progress to me. Off to share.
-
PAINT! To give the Death Star the uniform color it needs to look right, I'm covering walls and floors with plastic spray paint. I picked up some grey today and finished out the back wall for the Emperor's arrival area. A cardboard printed piece (an homage back to the Kenner playset) will fit into place behind the blast door opening, and will show a perspective view of the docking bay/space.

-
A few more, with figures. There are gaps and seams still to be covered up. Not to mention the second coat of paint. Plus the floor paint. Plus the other 90% of the Death Star.... ;)

Most impressive.

Snow days in North Carolina = time to make plastic! Moving along with more of the chasm wall, though it feels like it's taking forever! Some temp placeholder prints represent where labels will be attached. I really wish I could figure out a way to easily make these Death Star "light" panels, but there would simply be too much cutting/painting involved, so for now - decals will have to suffice.

NC you say? where the heck are you? I am in NC!
These Death Star sets are shaping up nicely! Really nice work with a classic style.

and a little more...

I don't care if you made the plastic with the cut wall lights or with the stickers as you have done this is simply AWESOME.
Ron
-
All death star, 24 hours a day! That's what it feels like this week. Chasm is pretty much complete. 2 columns will be placed at the "front" of this area to support the floor above it. Won't attach wall to base until the reverse side (landing hanger) is ready to go. Pretty sweet!

Just Bloody awesome mate.
Ron
-
My comments are on the front page!
-
This is so awesome! Really great job capturing this moment in time! Such an iconic scene and you have really knocked this one out of the park. Also you could have hours of fun here shooting Stormtroopers and swinging across.
-
As always, thanks for the awesome feedback :)
Level 2, above the docking bay, is moving along. Tarkin area will be the conference room, hall right outside, and of course the trash compactor on the left. Now I know how irritated the Emperor must have been to have a half-finished Death Star - wish I could build faster!

Great Work!
-
I keep hearing rumors about one of these on the horizon for Hasbro, but lets face it it will not even get close to this marvel. Off to share.
-
This too looks very promising! Nice work!
-
I should be working on Hoth instead! Lots of snow in NC, with ice expected tonight. If I don't lose power, hopefully I can spend the next few days working on plastic :)
Here's what I accomplished today, watching the snow fall. Still need to do a second coat of paint, but you can tell how this is shaping up. :)

Utterly amazing!
-
Impressive....most impressive. You are full of surprises.
-
I agree fantastic! Time for another fp update.
-
Wow! That's completely great!
-
More progress today. Rebuilt the trash compactor and painted some detail into the walls (I think it looks more like the site of an Ewok massacre than a garbage bin). The "action feature" of the left wall moving works slightly better this go-round. Can't attach the rail until I'm ready to piece the whole level together for good. Added what will be a kinda cool action feature... a little gun platform will fold down (think wall-hanging ironing board). Using the gun from the Falcon CD-Rom playset (it rotates). A small hinge will permit folding up and down.

And here's the "dry fit" of the second level. You can see the "pull down" gun feature. Will be a few weeks before I get to do more work on this monster. Still need to do labels for the conference table computers and a large perspective label at the "end" of the hallway.

Level 3, throne room side has started. I'm cheating just a bit - using a plastic container for the window (labels will cover to create the windows - wish I could cut the windows out of plastic, but it would just be almost impossible).

A little more done yesterday afternoon. Started work on the right side wall of the throne room. Trying to figure out how to design the labels for the windows isn't easy because of the curved shapes involved.

This week's progress. Spent all of today working on the 2 viewscreen walls for the throne room. So many weird angles and shapes. Taking forever! You can also see the layout of level 3. Doesn't look like much yet, but all the little pieces together will make an awesome whole (I hope!)...

Wow, it is really looking great now. So envious of you creating something like this.
You need to start a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign and make these for all of us. I wonder how these pieces would work on a 3d printer?
Anyhow, off to share again.

Glad ya'll are enjoying this as much as I am!
This week I managed to get a chair printed on a 3d printer. I'm so impressed that I've gone crazy and just ordered a 3D printer. Work will pause on the Death Star for the moment until I learn how to use this new machine and can add some awesome new stuff to the Death Star. :)

-
Well that is pretty cool. Can't wait to see how you like this 3D Printer and how it either makes your life easier or the opposite considering how easy it is to use and print. If I may ask how much did it cost you to get that chair printed? And where did you send your design to have this printed?
I also hope you will share your 3D Printing journey and how you decided what printer to buy, how to set it up, and how to load it up to print, the software you used to create your design, etc. I would love to interview you on an episode of Custom Action Figure News about your playsets and then perhaps down the road we can get into 3d printing once you figure it all out if you are ok with said interview. I am very curious to see how this works.
Off to the front page.

Well, I work at a school that just got a 3D printer and I sweet talked the teacher into printing this design I made. I really just wanted to test printer and see and feel what a 3D printed object is like. It's much more stiff than thin pieces of Instamorph are. Of course it allows for quite a bit more fine detail. Instamorph mostly sticks to this 3D printer PLA plastic. So, my plan (once I learn how to use the printer and get some decent prints) is to really utilize both materials into the playsets - the results will still be all plastic. :)
I did price the chair out on Shapeways and a couple other printing services - they wanted anywhere from $40 - 80 just for the chair. Clearly I figured I'd be better off biting the bullet and buying a printer rather than getting pieces done professionally. I figure the chair likely cost around $3 - 5 for materials.
I've used 3d software for many years now (I've been a video production teacher for 15 years) - so I don't have too much hurdle to jump through to be able to design things to print - it will just be the actual process or printing (well) I really need to learn how to do.
In the end I suppose I'm picture still using Instamorph to do landscape type pieces, whereas 3D printing can provide detailed, evenly designed pieces (such as guns, chairs, walls, floors, consoles, etc). I'm bubbling over with creativity at the moment - just wish the printer was here, it was in good working order, and I had hours and hours to dedicate to playset making :)
-
Expect commissions.
DH
-
I am definitely looking forward to seeing your progress as you get one of these and set it up and then start printing.
-
wow great job!!! i too will be watching your progress cant wait to see more !!!
-
Thanks guys! I'm certainly having a blast and look forward to learning how this 3D print thing can take the playsets to the next level!
-
The chair looks great and as everyone else I'll be watching the progress very closely.
Ron

While waiting for the 3D printer to get here, I've been designing. I'm sure these will have to be "fixed," but it's a starting point for some of the playset components I hope to create in the printer. Click on over to FB (in my signature) to see the other designs.

Seeing Sketchup used to make 3D printer blueprints is so rad. I remember when I first started fiddling with Sketchup years ago having the thought that it would be cool if you could produce models of the things you built onscreen.
-
Looks fantastic! I don't know who is gonna be happier, me or you when you get this printer just so I can see what you do with it.
Also folks, I am happy to announce that CAFN will be interviewing this outstanding customizer on May 8th around 6:15PM Eastern so we can hear about all his work and this new printer he is gonna get!
I also got a little package in the mail this week with some of JF's work. Folks, it was like opening the box on a Kenner Playset. It really made my day when I was really having an awful day. Thanks JF. Can't wait to talk with you about your work.
-
This will look great once printed.
I was just wondering do you have to do a computer 3D model for it to print to the 3D printer or can you just scan a picture for it to do the same job?
Ron
-
Ron, far be it from me to comment before Jrny Fan, but I think you have to have some type of CAD type software to get it to work. Trust me, I definitely want to shed some light on that topic.
-
Yeah, I've dabbled in 3d animation over the years as part of my career in video production - so I've found it somewhat easy to pick up trying to model playsets in Sketchup. They have to be designed first, then it goes through the 3D printer software, and then apparently you cross your fingers and hope it prints something nice. I expect it will require a lot of fine-tuning before I start printing good looking stuff. I'm just starting to enter the mindset of how to design pieces that can fit or snap together (the printer, C-3DO, will only print items 6x6x6). I tested and I think I'll be able to use Instamorph as a type of glue (it sticks to the 3-d printed plastic pretty well), too.
Looking forward to talking a bit about these beasts on the Podcast.
-
Here's my first SW print. A simple crate. Some of the masking tape is still on top - haven't cleaned up the print yet. Not quite as smooth as I'd like it to be, but haven't even started tinkering with settings yet. Will paint it tomorrow and see how it turns out.
-
Wow, that good from your first print! Man, I give it a month till you are printing your own action figures. With folks like you we might not need Hasbro anymore! On the front page.
-
3D printing is truly the future of action figure customizing. Heck, in a few years I'm sure the printers will be able to paint the stuff we print as it comes out of the machine!
Maybe it's time for the big toy companies to start thinking ahead and figuring out ways of licensing print designs now...
Anyway, great stuff as usual; that crate looks like something that rolled right off of the main assembly line; if you hadn't told us you printed it yourself, I don't think any of us would ever have known!
-
Fantastic box! Did you make it with a removable lid and hollow space inside?
-
Thanks for the positive feedback. Parts I've printed so far. Still refining. Focusing on the cannon base.
-
PS - this crate doesn't have an opening lid - but that is the plan for the next crate I end up doing.
-
Wow, looks like you are moving right along. That box painted up nicely. Looks better than what comes from China!
-
Nice Job on those parts. The gun bases look good.
-
From creating awesome playsets from plastic to 3D printing there will be no stopping you now.
Ron
-
Okay, here's a decent version of the gunner station base. The chair fits perfectly into a slot on the gun base.

-
Looks great.
Ron
-
nice, i have a question tho. When you print out the chair/crate etc. Are you making them hollow to cut down on the print time/ resin (or whatever material) used in the 3D printer? I know on Danny Choo's Tokyo Stormtrooper site he had his 3D printer software set up so the thickness of the dolls he was making had a 2 or 3 mm width of the cast so the interior was actually hollow.
But either way its excellent work I can't wait to see what else you make, maybe some of accessories for playsets! *nudge* hehe
-
Wow, that chair and gun platform just look perfect. Time to go to the fp again!
-
Yeah, I'm slowly learning to optimize material. I'm building a lot of "empty" space within my 3d models. In addition, the printer settings permit you to choose how "dense" honeycomb type filler is within solid objects. So yes, there's a lot of air inside these prints.
Currently attempting a 6 hour print of the computer wall of the red room. Will see how it turns out! Also making some Instamorph progress on the throne room. Trying to get level 3 moving again.
-
Finishing up the Emperor's throne room today. Mostly done minus the 2 screens and railings. Will attempt to 3d Print the railings - we'll see how well that goes.
3D printing continues, though my big red room console print out for today totally failed, after 6 hours of printing. Will see what I can salvage from it. Currently trying to figure out why plastic won't come out of the extruder.

This looks so good that I might have to keep you in my address book for replacement pieces on my Death Star playset!

Nice, the DS Update, not the idea of six hours of printing and having it bugger up. Hope your printer is ok.

A few photos from this weekend's C-3DO 3-d printing. The white glob is the failed red room computer wall. Hoping I can use it as a base and cover it with better-printed material. On the rust placemat is half of the gunner station gun. Sadly, it doesn't look like the right half wants to cooperate, so I may have to go back to the drawing board for the gun itself. Finally, 2 pieces of the detention block floor - one of them painted nice and red.
Currently I've just designed a wall piece for the gunner station area. I've duplicated the design from the vintage DS playset base walls (the greyish ones by the trash compactor. It's printing now.
Looking forward to being on the Imperial Shipyards podcast this week - if I can pry myself away from plastic printing long enough to Skype in...

Feel free to reach out if the printing is giving you trouble. I could probably shoot you some pointers. Im sure if your running into an issue ive seen it lol. Looking good man im here to help if you need it. Looks from your print that its too hot or under extruding. Your belts could also be loose, causing the corners not to stick to the details. They may not seem so but they will be sneaky lilke that lol.

One reason I like this place is seeing folks willing to help other folks if they have problems. Bravo Dark Knight 4516.
I am hoping in the near future to get a group of folks together for a round table on 3D Printing and hope I can convince you, Casey from GM, and Jrny Fan into just getting together to shoot the bull about the trials and tribulations of working in this medium.
You guys have already been such a boon to even helping folks get started and I really appreciate all of you taking the time to share.

Thank you for the offer! I may look you up once I start getting the hang of this. I've been very lucky so far with my prints. The red room console was just a bad print, I think. I'm re-printing it right now and it's turning out perfect.
Couple of questions for anyone in the know....
1) The 3-D printing creates a bit of a "lined" texture on top layers. I know some of the settings can change this to some different design - but is there a good way to combat this to make it more - smooth? I've read sanding is the way to go, but curious if there are other ways. I'm using PLA plastic.
2) Now that I'm painting these 3D prints (and some of the Instamorph too) - is there a good sealer I could spray on to help protect the paint from scratches? That's what I love about colored Instamorph - no paint to scratch, since the color is part of the plastic.

Try increasing your solid layers for the top and bottom. Also decrease your layer height. 1.5 - 2mm works well in my opinion but the smaller you go the less lines you will see. My opinion cura works better than slicer . Also slow down your outer perimeters or if you see an option for skin thickness change that. PLA will always show more lines than abs from what ive seen.
Krayon makes a good clear coat spray for plastics if you can find it. I had to get it from the local hardware store though because home crapo and lowes only seem to carry rustoleum which is terrible. just.....just terrible.....
Also you can do a vapor bath if you use abs which smooths the part but, you need a well ventilated area, good fire combatant skills lol just incase, a glass jar, a machine with a heated bed or a hotplate with a temperature gauge, and some acetone. That only works with abs though not pla

Thanks for the advice. Will certainly have to play with settings once I get some time off. Right now I'm just having too much printing out things left and right to worry about a picture-perfect finish :)
Here's the completed computer bank for the red room. Almost done with the cannon, too!

-
Wow,... the awesome cometh!
The computer panels are nice, so many possibilities... hehe.
-
Wow, you have got to feel so good just knowing you can now just print what you want. Between instamorph and your printer you have got to feel pretty invincible.
It was a great podcast the other night thanks for giving us a bit of your time. Off to the front page yet again!
-
One reason I like this place is seeing folks willing to help other folks if they have problems.
You guys are pioneers.
-
Sjefke I used the same term on our podcast with Brian as a matter of fact. I so agree!
Had to get that picture of the new canon on the front page too. That looks great Jrny Fan!
-
I've looked through the posts here and can find what printer you are using, mind sharing (I am very seriously considering buying one)? Amazing prints by the way.
-
I don't know if pioneer is the right term -- more like mad Star Wars scientist?!
Had fun on the podcast!!
My printer, C3-DO, is a Printrbot Simple metal. I purchased the assembled version -- for such an intricate thing, I didn't want to take the chances of something going wrong during assembly. Do some reading / YouTube viewing about setting to use in Slicer software. I really have to say this thing has been super easy to use and start getting some decent results. It can only get better the more I refine the process.
Finished the weekend with a light panel print...

The panels look great! That ds gun is sweet!
-
Wow, that light panel looks perfect. More comments on the front page.

Good luck with that, it seems the GM guys don't like talking to anyone these days.
-
Very nice work!! I've been so wrapped up in our projects that I've been forgetting to keep an eye on yours here! I also jumped in on your FB page. We're considering adding a 3D printer in the not-terribly-distant future, as well. (At least one.) So, I'm interested in your trials and travails with yours from a professional standpoint. ;)

Nice, I see the detention block escape on the left, is that the deathsquad commander pit in the upper right? Also was wondering if you're basing the dio off the old Palitoy Deathstar toy?
-
It never ceases to amaze me what you can get that InstaMorph to do. Another great playset well on its' way!
-
While I'm not specifically going for the Palitoy Death Star (I didn't know it existed until the early 90s), it can't help but parallel it from the circular design.
Fit test for the detention walls. Also designed a circular computer unit - it's printing right now. WIll be interesting to see how it compares to the Instamorph versions I made for the throne room.

hand version vs. printed version. It will be an interesting test.
Your latest update is back to the front page. You just have to smile whenever you walk by this now.
After your successes with 3d printing it has me wondering if you plan to revisit any set pieces from your other play-sets?
-
Very nice detention center shaping up!
-
What a fun adventure this playset is shaping up to be - it's truly spectacular.
I hope that Hasbro's taking notes.

I hope that Hasbro's taking notes.
I keep hearing rumors about a Death Star Playset and think the next big toy fair will have them announcing this, but no luck so far. Maybe they keep seeing Jrny Fans and are revamping their plans!
-
My circular console was a bust - didn't print well at all. So, I'll have to refine that.
Gunner station area is complete. Camera flash makes things look kinda odd. There are designs from the vintage Death Star playset on the left wall. One of the right wall pieces has a design right off the vintage Micro Collection Death Star gunner area.

Awesome as always mate.
Ron
-
Nice. Nice. Nice.
Did I read something about your print bed?
Man, my comments are on the front page.
-
I would like this to come over to my house. ;D
-
hmmm question did the old Deathstar toy gun have a missile to fire back in the day and/or will yours? lol
-
Yeah, I scratched the printbed - was worried it might throw the printing off, but seems to still be doing ok. The vintage Kenner gun did not launch anything - it rotated and could "blow up." No plans right now to have a launcher on my version - but who knows, maybe one day.
The meantime, I've got some barrels going...

Thanks Brian for giving these designs for us all the use. Daggone, this is making me want to go buy my own printer!

Damn impressive work mate, this is going to amazing once it is all completed.

I'm taking a break from Death Star. Got started on this over the holiday.

YES! The cantina. I'll take one complete with bar and stools.

Agreed. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to buy things like this! Trust me, with folks like Jrny Fan that will be no problem in a few years I am predicting!

Looks awesome and it's amazing what these 3D printers can do.
Ron

This is a fun break from the Death Star. Will do a little painting on this probably...

Off to share.

I lust after another man's toys.
Why cant Big H offer us this in the rumored Cantina Battle Pack?
-
The lust comment made me laugh pretty hard! Painted distillery - will likely make a couple more containers to attach to it. Also put together Tarkin's screen area. Floor will be painted black and labels applied.

Wow, my comments are on the front page!
-
Really like the modular design of your cantina bar. Very customizable!
-
It just keeps getting better!
-
Tarkin screen label applied. I spent 8 hours printing the tractor beam control. I even used a lower quality setting (thus the light is highlighting the layers). It's all one piece though!
Did the painful job of creating railings today. They stick to the Instamorph steps. Up at the top, I used Superglue. Since I didn't intend on having a 3D printer when I designed the throne room, I didn't take into account having to have a way to attach these railings. Perhaps someday I'll re-design and 3D print the full staircase and railings.

WOW this is just amazing to say the least.
Ron
-
I shared this on Boring Conversation Anyway the other night. I really, really woudl love to see something like this offered for sale one day.
Really cool. What can I say other than back on all the regular pages again and thanks for sharing it.
-
This is great! This is something I've been itching to do. I've even started collecting parts of the old DS playset to see what I can puzzle together.
The 3D printing is coming out nice. Is the material that you use in it rugged or does it tend to snap on thin objects?
-
I love the Death Star "dio-collage"! I am impressed by the level of quality you've put into all of your dioramas, but the number of scenes you were able to incorporate into the Death Star swivel scenes is overly impressive. I love the number of scene specific poses your figures are in within each dio. Very nice!
-
So, I'm planning on getting back to the Death Star later this week (I'm now on vacation, whoo hoo). But, I spent yesterday and today polishing off this piece for Jabba's Palace...

Daggone, that is awesome. Hey, did you see us feature your Death Star Play Set on the first video version of Custom Action Figure News?
Off to share this latest update.

More awesome eye candy keep em comming mate.
Ron
-
I must have this. I picked up another 2-1B, and the roughing out for a courier droid is done.
Really. Must have. :P
BTW, they're showing another 3D printer's torture rack on Yakface this week. I prefer the scale and detail of yours.
-
Jrnyfan, just saw your Death Star Playset on Tamer's podcast/YT Video. Amazing! I hope you have kids because that thing just screams "PLAY WITH ME!!!". I think many would easily pay $300 for one of these if Hasbro would get off of their excuses and manufacture something like this. "Bring on the Barge!!!"
Great work!
-
Thanks for the continued compliments, guys! I don't have a kids - but a nephew who is one year old. Hope he'll get to enjoy these things in a few years.
I'm now on vacation for several weeks - so hopefully will have some time to get rolling with some more cool stuff. This week I just can't seem to find the motivation to get back to the Death Star. It's just difficult work that's left on it (not really much creative stuff), so I'm being a slacker. I did manage to 3-D print a 3_D scan of my little brother's head yesterday - ha.
I did revamp the website this morning, though. Some new pictures, a new narrative about my history with SW, and I hope soon to be able to include some "123-D" scans of the playsets so readers can virtually interact with them.
Also toying with the idea of maybe printing off some torture racks to see if anyone would be interested in buying. I now want to have a rainbow of 3D printer plastic colors to use - and $30 a roll is expensive!! :)

-
Just checked out website and loved it seeing all those playsets together the WIP pics was awesome.
Ron

This is pure diorama, not playset. It's 2 parts - the wall base attaches onto 3 pegs coming up from the floor piece. A couple of labels finish it out. One day hope to do something much for expansive for Blockade Runner, but this is fun for now.
A little more progress on the Death Star - Tarkin area and tractor beam now attached to the rest of the upper levels. Built the wall between the 2 parts.
Found out today I have to purchase a new air conditioner, so plastic making may be on pause for a few days.

After hearing there's an interest in purchasing some of my work, I've decided to sell a few pieces on demand. I currently have the shopping cart setup with a limited number of "in stock" items until I see how much demand (or lack there of!) there really is. Only have 2 pieces right now, but plan to add more in the near future.
I want to make it clear that these pieces I'm selling are in no way related to "Star Wars" (or G.I. Joe or any other trademarked property) - instead they are meant to be generic diorama pieces that work well with a variety of 3 3/4" toy lines.

Hey jrny, the link isn't working. I don't know if it's my computer or the link.
-
Hrmm, link comes up for me and I had my brother pull it up and worked fine for him. Maybe try a different browser?
Adding a "lounge chair" to the store today - and hopefully a "snow planet computer unit," too.
-
The Tantive display looks great and the DS playset is amazing.
Ron
-
Vacation is great - love having time to spend with plastic!
Fine-tuning Death Star now - likely won't post any other pics of it until it's done. Filling in the gaps and seams just isn't easy work at all. Plus covering up the "edges" of the floors is a pain, too.
While waiting on paint to dry this morning, I knocked out the Tusken Camp - made entirely of Instamorph, no 3-D printing involved. I'll likely refine it someday, but this works ok for a rough draft. More pics on Facebook.
Still refining the "cold planet computer" - and some other goodies that might look at home in a Hoth Rebel Command Center. Hope to get them into the new store soon.

Wow, you are really getting things done. Time to take a bit of this to the front page too.

Another awesome looking play piece mate.
Ron

It's been a long week of fighting with the 3-D printer. If you're thinking of investing in one - just know that when things go wrong, it takes a lot of tinkering to get things figured out. I easily have wasted $30 in plastic trying to figure out what the problem was. I also now have about 10 nasty prints of Death Star walls. Turned out most of my problem was a bad spool of plastic.
In other news, I've added a new piece to the store. Computer Console #1 will look great in a variety of places, but certainly in chilly climate dioramas.

Glad to hear that you got the 3D printer up and running again and the console is a beautiful piece.

Can I have the set I ordered autographed? ;D
Talk about fantastic looking. Things like this will get me off my duff and maybe building my Echo Base Dio.
Off to share to the front page and elsewhere today.

Might want to check your computer. I have opened that link multiple times. It sure worked for me to order a set! Let me know if you need any help.

Strange about the site not coming up. I know Facebook gives me a warning when I try to post a link - maybe something related to a virus program? Maybe try to access on a different computer?
I added a new item to the parts store today. A space table 2 pack...

And folks I am happy to report I got my first order in and it was awesome! These things are really sturdy and the level of detail he is able to get with that printer is astounding! I can't wait to see what else shows up in his E-Store!
Time to go to the front page with the new update.
-
Glad you're enjoying, Tamer.
This secondary Death Star set is for my Falcon shelf - which re-creates Kenobi's death scene. Manually sliding blast doors! Will be working a bit on the reverse side soon. Couldn't have fit this well into the big Death Star playset. Will spraypaint this since the the different pieces seem to have come out different colors.

Some DeathStar (or SSD) blast doors like these are something that you should sell they'd be greate for imperial dio's. Just thinking out loud hehe
-
Damn impressive work on the DS wall mate.
Ron
-
Awesome set there JF. I showcased your computer consoles on CAFN last night. Man, this would sell like hotcakes too I would bet. Off to share.
-
Yeah this one's pretty cool. Can't wait to spray paint it so the color is more uniform. This one I doubt I'll add to the store - as it's very clearly SW and I'm trying to be very respectful of copyright law. But, we'll see.
Right after my kitchen renovation I got my wisdom teeth out, so it's been a few days of bed rest for me. Starting to get back into some 3D printing, but trying to be careful, since I'm still on some pain med. Hoping to finish the door handles for this blast door today, and the 2 side supports.
Hoping to get back to finishing off the big Death Star by the end of this week.
-
Wow, Chad just got his out too. I know I didn't have much fun getting mine out while I was in the service, but glad to see you are recovering.
The finishing of the Death Star! Can't wait for the final reveal. Such a ton of great work.

Painted the "Death Star Duel" playset and took some photos...

Just stunning work mate.
Ron
-
The update sure looks good on the front page.
-
The blast door thing turned out okay - but certainly needs some refinement.
I completed "Computer Chair #1" for your chilly planet dioramas. Get them now on the diorama parts sales page...

Looks good. Off to share.
Gonna have to order some of those chairs!
-
Fantastic work yet again mate your really hitting these 3D printing items out if the ball park.\
Ron
-
Not the most exciting day making plastic. I tried a 6 hour print of the Senate podium, but canceled it mid-print. I have some problems with my model I'll have to iron out (you can see the area beneath the ornaments on the front didn't print). I've also decided to get rid of the seats inside it, to give more room for the figures to stand.
I also got back to the Death Star. I've just about finished up with the top - filling in the gaps piece by tiny slow piece (which of course will be painted). Also added some filler to one of the side gaps. I'm hoping to be done with this baby by the end of next week. I'm Death-Starred out.

-
Looks fantastic mate.
On a side note when the item comes out of the printer are the cross lines that the printer makes on the item are they easily sanded to give a smooth look?
Ron
-
Sorry to hear about your printing setback. Great potential there.
That Death Star is gonna be the centerpiece of your collection. Wow. That reminds me, I need to order some chairs. Off to the front page.
-
Yeah, Death Star will be pretty cool once it's finished. Wish I had more room so I could make it just a little bit bigger(!).
The "texture" that prints on the 3D prints...
There are a few different "types" to choose from. I usually choose the linear pattern because it's quickest. Depending on how fine-tuned your printer is, sometimes it comes out as a bit of a raised texture, other times it comes out smushed down much flatter.
The pieces can be sanded. I say "can" because sanding seems to create a little discoloration. I think if the plan is to paint the pieces, then yes, sanding should be done. I prefer to get away without painting whenever possible. So, I usually live with the texture. A Google search about "smoothing 3D prints" can lead you to a lot of info about different techniques - not many of which I've tried. Light has a lot to do with how the piece looks, too. I'm looking at a piece about 12" away right now with not much light hitting it and I can barely tell there's texture. If I were to take a photo with the camera flash, the texture gets highlighted. About 6" away from the object and I can start to see the lines. So, it varies. I can't help but think over the next decade there will be all kinds of developments that will lead to much smoother 3D prints. I try to think what I could "print" on my Apple Imagewriter II printer back in 1987 compared to what I could print on an inkjet in the miid-90s, compared to what I can print on a laserprinter today. Since I'm printing homemade toys/displays, I'm thrilled just to be able to get such sharp edges and 3-dimension shapes made out of plastic, texture or not. :)
Currently printing Palpatine's office desk. I bet you've figured out that my next playset (once Death Star is done) is going to be the Galactic Senate (Palp's office and a slice of the senate proper above it, along with a raising podium). This one will be my first real completely 3-D printed playset.
-
Thanks heaps for the info mate I really appreciate it. I forgot to mention that I'm looking at investing in a 3D printer so that is why I asked now I just need the MINISTER for WAR and FINANCE to say yes ;D
Ron
-
Wow, Ron with a 3D Printer too. Priceless!
Wow, that was a great tutorial on the texture you end up with 3D Printing. I too thought that with what they are already able to do with some of the first generation 3D Printers is probably gonna be childs play to what we could seen just five to ten years down the road. I am serious imagining a program that you take 2d images with your own camera, upload em to your computer and then just choose a scale that you want to print at. I am also envisioning a day where you don't buy, you just print your action figures, dioramas, and vehicles.
-
Palp's desk. Decal will cover the middle raised area - I guess it's some kind of holo projector or something?

Wow, you are getting good with this printing and design thing. Looks spot on! Off to share.
-
Very cool. (Now you just need his chair. ha.) Is this one you'll be selling?
-
I'll echo my kind of scum, I'm in (and very excited!) if you're selling any of these!
-
Palp's desk looks great.
and Shawn I'm just figuring out what type I want, it's worse then looking for a car decisions decisions.
Ron
-
May put the desk on the storefront -- it seems like it could be generic enough (and it's really not an exact replica of the set piece). Want to wait and make sure I don't want to make any changes to it before I put it on sale, though.
Picking out a 3D printer is difficult!! Although I've had plenty of hiccups, I'm still fairly happy with my Printerbot Simple Metal. At work we got in a Makerbot Replicator II ($2000) - haven't used it much yet, but seems like everything about it is easier. I guess it depends on how much you like to "fiddle" with stuff like this.
Made progress on Death Star today. Hoping tomorrow I'll be able to finish out the remaining 3 gap areas.
-
I had folks asking me on Facebook when I put the post up if it was for sale. I think you will get some takers. Ugghhh, I forgot to order me a few chairs. Time to rectify that right now.

This is so beautiful it makes me want to cry! Brain hats off to you bud, this is just outstanding. More comments on the front page.
I think part of my toys is knowing I will never get to see Hasbro make something like this!

There are simply not enough family friendly expletives to express how freakin' awesome this is so I'll just leave it at that!
-
Just amazing. You must be so proud having this one of a kind work.
Now when do we get to see it out of the package? ;D

-
Just outstanding work mate, I have just been looking at this for the last half an hour and I'm just amazed.
Ron
-
In case you missed it on FB, I've 3-D printed the conference table and chairs. Still have to apply some labels, though! They're up on the storefront, too.
Thanks for all the positive comments on the Death Star! Glad to be done with it, no lie. Will likely take a few weeks off before I get going on the next project: Galactic Senate.

Nice, time for another front page update.
-
Wow I'm really liking the table and chairs I can't wait to see what else you do.
Ron
-
Out of the blue...
Still refining a bit, but here's the completed prototype. Hope to have this "Vehicle Repair and Charging Station" up for sale on the store later this week. Pipes are flexible, but have wire in them so they can be posed however. The pipes seem to fit nicely into figures' hands. The ring the pipes attach to rotates. The top lid pops off and offers storage area for guns/tools.

Great work yet again mate.
Ron
-
New computer stations! You are killing me here. I just reviewed your vehicle maintenance energizer on CAFN this past weekend. Just great stuff. Off to share.
-
Awesome work! I gotta get the desk and chair set, truly excellent work there!
-
Here's the prototype of my next piece - "Maintenance Balcony." This is rough around the edges - the final edition should print a bit better. There's a protruding piece that you can attach the Hasbro Vader 2002 gantry piece (that slices in two) onto. There's also a foot peg made just for characters who may be fathers. It's 10 separate pieces that fit together. Hope to have this diorama part up for sale on the online store by next weekend.

Looks amazing a few more pieces like a catwalk and platform and you could possibly make an interconnecting playset.
-
Wow, that looks fantastic. Gonna have to have one of those too. Off to share.
-
Another impressive piece mate.
Ron
-
Thought I'd disappeared eh? It's been nothing but 3-D printer woes for me since October. Finally have it straightened out and am "back on target." I finished up the Bespin Gantry mini-playset. It includes an extension of the catwalk. All fits together snuggly except for the antenna thing that Luke hangs on to - 3 parts, which I'll have to superglue together until I devise better fitting parts. Some day I hope to completely re-do the big Bespin playset, all 3-D printed - and this will merge into the larger playset.
I've also closed up the diorama parts shop for now. As unreliable as this printer is and as much time as selling parts has taken away from my own creative engineering, I just can't justify the sales right now. Anytime I take money from someone customer service is my top priority - and I don't like people having to wait long stretches of time for me to figure out how to fix my printer when it goes down. I'm still trying to explore options to get some of this stuff out in ya'll's hands. May possibly auction off some pieces, and do some kind of charity donation with the proceeds. And at some point maybe I can look into a second printer dedicated to just sales parts.

Glad to hear that you got the 3D printer fixed and the gantry is awesome.
Ron
-
I can't order one of those gantries? Sniff, sniff! Say it ain't so!
All depression aside because your store is now down, I can't fault the reasons. I love this new Bespin PS. Off to share and I sure hope perhaps in the future we can get this store open again.
-
That Bespin Gantry is excellent !!
-
I'd buy that in half a heart beat!
-
I'd buy that in half a heart beat!
You and me both Tom!
-
I've been eagerly awaiting your progress on this particular piece for some time and you did not disappoint! This has got to be my favorite playset piece you've produced---and ALL your stuff has been awesome.
I love watching you create these sets (and I'd be a definite "buy" if/when you ever decide to produce this gantry piece for sale/auction). Looking forward to more in the future!
-
Thanks for the great comments about the gantry!
Yesterday and today I finally finished up this next one - the Imperial Medical Chamber. More info and pictures on the FB page.

Wow, that looks fantastic too. Man, time to buy that second printer! Off to share.
-
Really great pieces for play or display.
-
No doubt abut it mate your the master when it comes to the plastic dio/display.
Ron
-
These diorama pieces look really great! I especially like the medical center base-plate. So sorry that you are having 3D printer woes.
-
Epic simply Epic. Chairs have always been my bugaboo.
There always time consuming and small parts and sharp tools can be down right dangerous.
Got scars to prove it. :(
-
Thanks as always for the great comments! And yes, small parts sure can be hard to work with - especially with a knife involved!
Printer is now fixed up and back online yet again. Crossing my fingers it won't die if I look at it wrong. =)
Over the holidays I decided to put my house on the market - hopefully this spring. I've started the long, long process of packing up the collection. I certainly will have to find a new home with a room big enough to house whatever playsets I make in the future. Since it will be very difficult to create much new stuff without my figures for reference, I'm hoping I might be able to print some sales pieces during this stretch. We'll see how things go.
So, I've decided to put my focus onto just one playset until my house goes on the market: the third incarnation of my Hoth playset, complete with Ion Cannon. I'm really excited to see what the interiors of the Rebel Base will look like 3-D printed. In fact, I've already got some floor pieces done. So what will become of my current Hoth 2.0 playset? More details to be revealed soon.
-
Hoth Set you say? Well I might take a small peek or two. LOL! Fantastic news. Off to share it.
-
Each time I see another of your amazing playsets, I get a little more angry with Hasbro.
Superb work as ALWAYS.

Another awesome playset! Yes, exactly what Chewie said!

In case you've missed updates over on FB, here's progress on Hoth 3.0. Integrating lights into the Bacta area. The Ion Cannon can be turned and debris can fall down into the command center by pulling a sliding door...

Very nice. Like the ion cannon.
LOVE the ion cannon.
How big is it?
Also, is your 3D-printer behaving finally?

Feels like I dropped off the face of the Earth - my first time here in a long time! If you've kept up with me on FB, you know over the last year and a half I've dealt with packing up my old house, buying and moving into a new one that needs a ton of work (which is still eating up all my time and energy), had a job change, and dealt with my father's death and the repercussions that had on my mother.
While my playset creating will continue, it will be much slower than the days when I used to churn them out every couple of months.
This summer I've managed to spend 3 days finishing out the Hoth 3.0 playset finally - which I've now renamed to "Hoth Rebel Base."
FB has the photo gallery (I'm likely going to do away with my website plasticplaysets.com)...

Great to see you again mate and awesome work as always.
Ron
-
So great to see you back! Sounds like an interesting time, my condolences on the loss of your father.
Great playset, what I wouldn't give to find that in a store. Off to share.
-
excellent work ! I would def buy this set !
-
This is fantastic, well done!
Sorry to hear about your father
-
What I wouldn't give to see this on the shelf for Force Friday this week!
-
Awesome stuff.
You certainly show more creativity than Hasbro does. It's not even close.
-
That Hoth Rebel Base is Magnificent!
-
Love you work man
-
*tap tap* - this thing on? I don't make it over here much anymore.
Thanks for the awesome comments. About a year after my father passed, my mother died! Aside from the mental taxation, carrying out her estate and selling her house really kept me tied up. So it really has been long stretches of time where I just couldn't find time to get back to plastic making.
I bought a new 3-D printer -a Robo R1+ - and it's soooo much better than the Printrbot I had. I finished up Hoth 3.0 (though I still know I'll take another crack at Hoth sometime down the road). I spent a few months trying to "catch up" and print for myself some pieces I had designed (Blockade Runner hall, Jabba droid torture rack)...

And a few months ago I decided to take a crack at Bespin 2.0 - this one entirely 3-D printed. You can follow my progress over on FB: https://www.facebook.com/swplasticplaysets/ (https://www.facebook.com/swplasticplaysets/). I've also started on a bit of a Star Destroyer Bridge, but that's still in the very early design phase.
