Title: Psyclone's Custom Figures - Sith Lord Darth Teloc
Post by: Psyclone on August 13, 2009, 07:47:59 PM
Darth Teloc

This one was made many years ago.  It's a generic Sith Lord that I just made up and put together using various parts and named Darth Teloc.

Imperial Turbo Tank or AT-ST Driver

My first post here in IS.  I have been looking around the past few days and thought I'd go ahead and post. Some of you may have seen my posts on Rebelscum but for those who haven't...

These guys were made before I saw that Hasbro is releasing a Scanning Tech figure.   I'd been waiting for years for a figure like that to use for these guys and just couldn't wait.

Head - Imperial Officer (Blonde version)
Helmet - POTF2 AT-ST Driver (hollowed out)
Chin Strap - Death Star Trooper Helmet
Goggles - General Veers (cut and shaped)
Goggle strap - Elastic (glued to goggles)
Torso - AT-ST Driver
Field Harness and holster - GI Joe (Firefly vs GI Joe Troopers Multipack)
Pistol in holster - GI Joe
Electrobinoculars - Sandtrooper
Communications box with antenna -Death Star Gunner helmet.
Upper arms - Moff Jerjerrod
Lower arms - AT-AT-Driver
Control box on sleeve - AT-ST Driver
Hands - TIE Pilot (I think)
Belt - Imperial Officer
Legs - AT-AT Driver
Boots - POTF2 TIE Pilot

Paints - Polyscale Light Gray, Model Master Acryl black, gloss black and silver, Model Master Acryl Medium Gray (helmet)
Imperial logos - Erikstormtrooper.com

The figure can sit with knees bent due to the use of the AT-AT Driver legs, the goggles can be brought down over the face or removed, head turns, arms and elbows move, boots turn and  gloves turn. That's it.  Now I have to make another one.

Turbo Tank Driver (Idea taken from the Dark Horse Comic "To the Last Man")

Imperial Field Trooper (Idea also taken from "To the Last Man")

AT-ST Driver

can't wait to see your other stuff

been thinking about joining up over at rebelscum, is it worth it?

Field Harness and holster - GI Joe (Firefly vs GI Joe Troopers Multipack)
Pistol in holster - GI Joe

BTW Psyclone I forgot to welcome you to the forum... I was still dumbfounded by that landing craft!

Those turned out really nice, I also like the added harness!
That Veers helmet really comes in handy for Imperials with caps, if that is indeed the one you used.
Ive been meaning to do some as well but now that Hasbro's upgraded the Tech I don't have to. ;D

forgot to ask,  do you have a group shot of the guys without the headgear?  I can tell they have different head sculpts or are painted differently but would like a closer look.

Psyclone,

First off I rarely venture outside of my comfort zone over at the Diorama section but I have wondered outside of my comfort zone to see your work.

What a treat it is to see your dramatic customs, they stand head and shoulders with some of the best people on the net, it's so inspiring to see such detailed and skillful work.

A word of warning, the guys on this site are totally awesome, they are going to lap up what ever you do (as will I), since joining this little community I have become totally hooked.

A warm welcome.

Jules

Hey, Psyclone!  Welcome to the 'Yards!  I love these guys!  The first time I saw them, I thought of the Imperial troops listed in WEG's Imperial Sourcebook for the SWRPG.

Inspired by the games Republic Commando and Ghost Recon I wanted to design a squad of commandos that would be a crossover from the Old Republic to the Empire. So, these Imperial Commandos were born.

These guys were cobbled together in a couple of days. The hardest part was trying to stop myself from overdoing it. I'm always tempted to add more or redesign the figure the longer I look at it. I'm sure they'll change soon. Anyway, here is what they look like now.

Very nicely done.

See, me and Psyclone are on the same wavelength - the Commandos going from the huge Katarn armor down to more standard trooper armor.  That ATAT driver helmet does look sharp, there!  Love the fact we both went for a rangefinder on one and a macrovisor on another.  Very nice looking squad.

man I can't pic a single thing on these that I like.... cuz I love all of it.  I never liked how they said that when the empire formed the troops just got brand new armor.  An army can never be completely resupplied with new uniforms everywhere over night.  There will be shipments missed, parts left out and most units are going to have to wind up cobbling together parts of their old uniform with their new one so that they are still protected in battle!  I picture these guys being stationed out on the outer rim somewhere and doing just that, having to invent a half imperial half republic set of armor....

LOOKS AWESOME.

on a side note, and I don't know that this realy matters, but I think everyone here tries to keep a single thread going with all their customs instead of posting seperate threads for each one.  I know it gets kind of confusing to have to read through a 66page thread (clint... ;) ) but it does cut down on some of the clutter in the board.  If it doesn't matter to anyone else though it realy doesn't matter to me.  On ST6 we make seperate threads for each figure custom as well, of course there isn't as many people on there and each of us have our own board section to post our "best of" stuff to showcase them.

Yeah, I post on a few different boards and have done it using single posts and all together.  I think there are pros and cons to both ways.  The single posts may clutter things up a bit but the advantage is that all comments/suggestions for a particular custom are kept together and if there is a WIP, which I have many of, and I want to update just one of the projects I can without it being too confusing.  Another thing is, if I post everything I have in one post it will be quite picture heavy.  That said, I will continue to do it here individually unless a mod would rather have them all together.  Whatever the bosses want or the majority of people would prefer  is what I'll do.

Thanks for the comments and questions spudafett and everyone else.

As requested by Clonehead, here are some 1:6 scale customs of some Rebel Commandos. This was my first shot at customizing in this scale.

Group shots...

Individual Shots...

Mon Calamari Rebel Commando - Commander Loligo Gammarus (Mon Calamari)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Mon_Calamari_Commando_files/IMG_2687.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Mon_Calamari_Commando_files/IMG_2688.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Mon_Calamari_Commando_files/IMG_2689.jpg)

1.Body / Uniform

I switched the Hasbro Admiral Ackbar body for the "F" style DiD body. I cut half of the forearms off and hollowed out the Ackbar hands with a Dremel in order to slide them over and stop right before the elbow.

Head and hands are from Hasbro’s Admiral Ackbar.

The rest of the figure’s clothing is mostly all standard Sideshow stuff except for the tunic.  The tunic was from the Admiral Ackbar figure but dyed using Cocoa Brown RIT dye.  I left it in long enough to where the color matched the tan vests from the Rebel Commando figures.

The rifle is a standard A295 rifle from Sideshow with some Boltgun Metal weathering and some wear added to the straps using some black ink and fine sandpaper.

I attempted to sculpt a helmet for this guy, like those seen in ROTJ on some bridge officers in shots with Ackbar, but scrapped it because I'm not fortunate enough to posess the ability .

2. Accessories

Bandolier -  Sideshow Endor Rebel Infantry with 2 flares from the Luke Skywalker as Rebel Pilot.

Pouch -  Hot Toys 23rd Reg USMC Sniper OD Drop Gas Mask Bag

Rebel Commando Grenadier - Sergeant  Wahs Tinian (Correllia)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Grenadier_files/IMG_2675.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Grenadier_files/IMG_2676.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Grenadier_files/IMG_2679.jpg)

1.Body / Uniform

I switched out the Sideshow body for the "F" style DiD bodies because I had planned on using bendable fingers with real cloth gloves but I ended up not liking the look and the fingers were hard to work with.  So, I dug out some of the Sideshow glove with a Dremel and secured the hands to a DiD ball joint.

Head is a Robert Shaw (as Quint) look-alike. I’m not sure who makes it.

The rest of the figure’s clothing is pretty much all standard Sideshow stuff.

2. Weapon

Using the A295 rifle as a base I grabbed a few parts from 1:18 EWEB Cannon for the grenade launcher and attached it to the side of the rifle. I also took the scope from the EWEB in place of the A295 scope.  An extra handle and trigger form an UZI was added in place of the fore grip. The rifle was then painted flat black and given a dry-brushing with Boltgun Metal and a bit of Poly Scale Dirt.

3. Helmet

I wanted to make the helmet a little different than the stock Sideshow version which was the same for all three of the Endor Commandos right down to the same painted chips and scrape patterns.  I repainted the "donut" using Poly Scale Pullman Green and added some chips and scratches using Boltgun Metal and Silver. I also took the Dremel to a few spots to create some dents.
4. Accessories

Bandoliers -  One is the Sideshow Endor Rebel Infantry bandolier and the other I bought off of Ebay and I’m not sure who makes it.

Pouches -  Pouches are from the Sideshow figure dyed Cocoa Brown using RIT.

Proton Grenades - These are kept in the two sideshow pouches.

Goggles - Hot Toys USMC Infantry Fallujah goggles

Rebel Commando Rifleman - Sronnok Nivek (Coruscant)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Rifleman_files/IMG_2704.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Rifleman_files/IMG_2706.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Rifleman_files/IMG_2707.jpg)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Rifleman_files/IMG_2705.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Rifleman_files/IMG_2700-filtered.jpg)

Head is from ?

The rest of the figure’s clothing is pretty much all standard Sideshow stuff.

2. Accessories

Chest Rig-  Ebay

Breather Mask-  Sideshow Han Solo Bespin

Pouch - Ebay.  Not sure who makes it.

Rebel Commando Marksman - Cam Ebaak (Alderaan)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Marksman_files/IMG_2680.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Marksman_files/IMG_2681.jpg)

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Marksman_files/IMG_2682.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Rebel_Commando_Marksman_files/IMG_2683.jpg)

1.Body / Uniform

Head is Dragon's Willi Rauch.

The rest of the figure’s clothing is pretty much all standard Sideshow stuff except the German Zeltbahn, or poncho.  That is from a Dragon accessory set.

2. Weapon

The rifle is a German MG34 Machine Gun with quite a few modifications to make it look more like they appeared in Star Wars but also weathered specifically for the type of figure that will be carrying it.

Step 1 -  Repositioned the legs so that they are reversed. This was done by cutting off the existing "T" part that held the legs in place.  Then I found a new "T" piece and dremeled a new spot for them closer to the muzzle.

Step 2 - In the film they used windshield wiper blades attached to the top part of the gun.  For this I used thin strips of styrene.

Step 3 - Added a rectangular box made from strips if styrene to the side of the gun, as seen in the film prop.

Step 4 - Removed the A295 scope that came with the Sideshow Endor Rebel Infantry figure and added it to this rifle.

Step 5 -  Replaced the black elastic sling with the leather sling from the Sideshow Endor Infantry figure's rifle. The sling was weathered a bit using fine grade sandpaper and a light dry brushing of Citadel's Flesh wash.

Step 6 - Painted the rifle Flat Black, then gave it a wash with Boltgun metal, made some scratch effects with silver.

Step 7 - Painted the stock in FolkArt Buckskin Brown.  When dry I dry brushed in some Citadel Paint's Flesh Wash and a light coat of Flat Black.

Step 8 - A light wash was applied over the entire gun with Poly Scale Dirt.

The com-link type box on the side of the helmet is from Hasbro’s Luke Skywalker in Hoth gear.

4. Accessories

Bandolier -  Sideshow Endor Rebel Infantry

Headset w/Mic -  Hot Toys 23rd Reg USMC Sniper

Compass Pouches -  (dime sized OD) Toy Soldier LC2 Sets

Electrobinoculars - Tatooine Luke Skywalker

Rebel Commando Recon Droid

(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Recon_Droid_files/IMG_2690-filtered.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Recon_Droid_files/IMG_2694-filtered.jpg)(http://web.mac.com/barefoothiker/Customs/Recon_Droid_files/IMG_2691-filtered.jpg)

There were quite a few repulsor type droids in the films, games and EU such as the senate cam droids, Imperial Probot, Sith probes, patrol droids, etc...  I'm a big fan of the Battlefront games and since this figure is a sniper/marksman I decided to give him a recon droid similar to the ones given to the marksmen in the game although I went with my own design. I call it ICU-2.

The droid is completely scratch built using 95% Hasbro parts from the 1:18 figures. If you know what you're looking for the parts are easy to spot.  The outer shell is from 2 largeer sized Imperial Interrogation droids split and hollowed out.  A wooden ball was placed in the center and the 3 pieces glued together.  A Sandtrooper's backpack was cut up and glued along the inner trench.  A little radar dish from the Naboo sweeper droid was attached and an antenna from a GI Joe playset was used.

Painting/weathering : Pullman Green was used for the outer shell, Boltgun metal for various parts and for dry-brushing, Flat Black for the center, Guard's Red for a few buttons and a wash of black ink and water to dirty it up a bit and bring out the details.

Thats a fantastic display with all of the figures together, they look so real. I love the guns and accessories and the droid is such an awesome touch.

Your work is just too good to believe, tell me, where did you learn such amazing skills, and what has been your motivation for getting into Star Wars? Your skills look professional, do you work in the film industry?

Thanks for that, Psyclone! I have always wanted to try some custom figures in this scale and you really pulled of off well, here. Your detailed description of the scene's componants. And what went into getting them together is what did it for me.
I really like that scanning droid.

Holy freakin' cow!  I LOVE that Mon Calimari Commando!  Ackbar is one of my favorite characters in the SW universe, and he looks great as a Commando.  I'd love to customize on this scale, but I'm betting it's rather expensive, and I just don't have it in me at this point.  Amazing all around!

Thanks for the kind words. Everything I do is just trial and error over a long period of time. I don't work in the film industry and not sure if I would even if I could.  For me, customizing  is the kind of stuff that happens without pressure.  If I had to make deadlines it wouldn't be as relaxing and I wouldn't want to do it as much.

When SW came out  in '77 (I was 10) I began to use whatever  I had as Star Wars toys because the SW figures hadn't been released yet.  By the time they were released, I think in '78,  I had already set up a large "city" in my basement and was mostly making custom structures with packing foam , cardboard boxes, downspouts, wood and anything that I could get my hands on. Later I started painting and customizing the figures themselves.

The Mon Cal was a last minute edition.  I picked up an Ackbar figure on ebay really cheap and decided to add him to the group.  As for the expense of working in this scale, you're right it's pretty crazy.  I did it because I had a bug and needed to get it out of my system and I'm glad I did but I don't know how many more I'll do in this scale.

those are awesome man.  I recently purchased a 1:6 cygirl figure and some outfits for my wife to mess with but we were rather disapointed in it and realy didn't go anywhere with it.  I'm too partial to the 1:18 scale figures and micromachine figures as they were what I grew up with and I always remember being frustrated by lack of details or limited posability.

your right about customizing loosing it's flare when you have deadlines.  I've been working on a commissioned set of figures and it's taking me forever to finish them because of that mental issue of the "it's required of me to do thus I do not want to do it" quandry.

I find it so relaxing though to get lost in a project or hobby after a day at work or school....  it's my stress relief.

I hear you on the whole deadline for a commision thing, Spud. It does kind of put a damper on that creative spark doesn't it? If I set or break my own deadline it doesnt seem to matter as much but when it's someone elses, now that's a different story.

yeah I had to make sure the guy I'm making these for wasn't expecting them too quickly.  I've been keeping him in touch with the progress of the figs he requested but I just can't get in the mood to do something I KNOW is going to someone else as soon as I finish it.

of course I don't know why that should matter because the figures that I've finished and kept have all gone into storage! lol  the making of the figure, painting the figure, and seeing it from start to finish is what it's all about for me.

my bad, we're thread jacking!

man I have one of those hasboro 12" admiral ackbars from childhood.  I also have a 12" gi-joe that changes colors in warm water... he has a hole in his chest from a run in with a bb gun...  I might break those two out one of these days and do some kind of custom with both of them, maybe something similar to this one, it's so awesome!

This one was made a month or two ago.  It's nothing special but I thought I'd post it anyway. I realize the mic is on the wrong side of the headset but, eh, I'm not that picky and it's what I had laying around.  The flash gives the figure a gloss which is not there when you actually see the figure in person. I made this guy before they announced the new Scanning Technician so hopefully they will release this repaint in the future using that mold.

Head - Imperial Officer (Dark Haired version)
Headset - Styrene and GI Joe mic
Torso - Imperial Officer
Arms - Moff Jerjerrod
Legs - Death Star Gunner
Shoulder pocket and tools - Black tape and styrene
Control box on belt - AT-ST Driver
Headset Cord - Black wire
Hands - Colonel Yularen

Paints - Flat Black and silver
Imperial logos - Erikstormtrooper.com print out with Elmer's Glue Stick

The logos are free to download.  You can then print them out on whatever type paper you like.  I just happened to use regular printer paper, cut the logo out using an Xacto and used Elmer's glue stick to apply it.

Here is a direct link to the logo sheet : http://www.erikstormtrooper.com/stickersheet.htm (http://www.erikstormtrooper.com/stickersheet.htm)

That is a really sweet custom! $35 (5 figs @ $7 each?) and some mad skills have given you a very nicely done figure, you should give him a sweet display case to show him off!

$35....ouch.  I don't often add up what the parts cost me since I have so many laying around that get re-used for other figures (if they aren't sold or given away).  The body will probably be re-used for parts when Hasbro releases these guys at some point.  He's nothing special, like I said, but I think it came out OK and figured I'd post it since I found some images. Thanks for the replies.

Great looking figure that would make a perfect background char in any Imp Dio.

It's best not to add up the cost of a custom, sometimes it can be scarry ;)
Title: Re: Psyclone's Custom Figures

Noooo, don't take him apart! He's far too awesome! He's like the uncomfortable tehnician in ESB who freaks out when Vader chokes Ozzle over the viewscreen. And yeah, I know it can be terrifying to add up the cost of mixed figures, lol. I would just to keep myself from wasting stuff, but whenever I take apart a figure (usually a crappy one I got for cheap, or one that's already damaged), I always use them as many times as possible.

For example, I took apart my episode 4 deleted scene Biggs Darklighter because his cape crapped up his shirt / arms by staining them permanently black, so I used his head to replace a really ugly-pedophile-murderer-looking head of a rebel pilot that came in a three-pack (see pic below) and made a good Biggs pilot, then I used his hands to give RotJ luke a gloved hand without having to paint over the exposed circuit one, and I used his jacket to make my other Luke (that came with the Rancor) into Shadows of the Empire Luke!

Here is another version of Palpatine/Sidious I put together using various parts. The face was repainted from the green to a more pale white with some yellow/red highlights around the eyes. Sorry the pics aren't better but you can click on the images to see them a little bigger.

ROTS Sidious body
AOTC Palpatine arms
Misc hands
SAGA Emperor Palp head
Ep 1 Jedi Knight Obi Wan hood

this figure is so much better than any palpy hasbro has released... you need to send that in as a reference pic and tell them to do it this way!

that stand is genious.  I wonder though how some soft red led's pointed up from the bottom onto the figure would look.... it'd make a great night light ;) lol

Thanks, I enjoy your stuff also.  I've seen it posted on 'Scum.  As for the Turbo Tank Driver, now that they are releasing the Scanning Tech and soon AT-ST driver I'm sure, you won't have to go to the lengths I did to create these guys.  I'm so happy they finally made an articulated sculpt of the gray jumpsuit Imperial.  Looking forward to the black jumpsuit repaint.  They could make mucho bucks off that mold.

12" figures aren't usually appealing to me but those Endor commandos are mighty impressive, especially the addition of the Mol Cal in the squad.   I've often there had to have been one or two of them sent down to the moon with the strike teams but we just didn't seem them in the movie on screen, kinda of like we see the Dresselian boarding the shuttle on Home One but we didn't see him in action so its like he was there but cut out.  Fantastic.

I'm impressed by all your work.  Scary good custom of Palpatine, especially distiguishing him by giveing him that elaborate base.
