MANDALORIAN SITH

Taken from the blog:

"When Luke Sprywalker announced the Custom Sith Competition over at Imperial Shipyards this month, Dad felt it was the perfect time to pay tribute to Mike Martinez of Mercury Art Studios.  Dad will be donating his MANDALORIAN SITH entry the Mercury Art Studios Auction and the proceeds will be given to the family of Mike Martinez. Mike always created the coolest and most unique Sith custom action figures. He is known in our house as the Sith master. Dad thought of Mike when he created this action figure and tried to create a Sith custom action figure that he never saw anyone make before. Dad created this action figure from the old (head) and the new Jodo Kast action figures (forearms), a Boba Fett torso, and a Lord Maleval (everything else). He removed the chest armor from the Boba Fett and dremmeled the torso until the chest and abdomen were only as thin as the armor. He then dremmeled the front chest and abdomen of the Lord Maleval action figure and then fused Boba Fett's chest armor to the Lord Maleval with Apoxie Sculpt. Then Dad painted the action figure in colors that he saw in a Mandalorian Sith drawing that some new friends showed him on The Forcebook.

If you are interested in owning this figure, look below for the link where you will be able to bid on this action figure on ebay. Dad is going to start the bidding high so Mike's family gets the assistance they need. Dad worked about ten hours on this action figure, so whoever wins it will definitely be getting their moneys worth. Not only will the buyer be getting one cool toy, but the money will be used for a good cause.

Best of luck everyone!!"

Wow! This is a really great figure Brian! Very nice of you to donate this guy for the cause. I know how hard it is to let your creations go. Great job all around!

Taken from the blog:

ONE COOL CUSTOMIZING FAD

At the beginning of this year we saw a lot of customizers taking advantage of combining the Vintage Gamorrean Guard with Marvel Universe Series 3 World War Hulk Action Figure. Both JACKOFTRADZE and Von Reinhardt put out variations on the figure and we know there were several more customizers who tackled the project also. When we saw fellow customizers results, we knew we wanted one too.

Knowing that the Vintage Gamorrean Guard was hard to come by this year, Dad didn't have the heart to cannibalize the figure to make his custom Gamorrean Gladiator action figure. He did have the heart to use parts from the POTF version though. Dad cut off the head of the figure and used the Dremel to make a hole in the head to make it ball jointed. All he had to do from there was paint the head to match the body.

I like this too, on the front page!

It is nice to know that you can get pretty much the same effect using the old potf2 parts. I hated the thought of canibalizing those nice new ones which really are one of Hasbro's finest creations. Why they won't re-release those again I have no idea, but this custom is just nice.

Thanks everybody.  I kept moving forward with the gladiator theme, but so far I only have WIP figures to show.  I haven't had much time to work on the blog at all.  "Customs I Wish I Owned" has suffered the most.  Once Elias goes back to school next week, things should go back to normal.  Here's a few pictures of the other gladiators I have been working on:

Great update, as I love to see the WIP pics! The mando shorty is great! He looks kind of funny but then as you look closer he is a tough little dude! great parts selection and can't wait to see him finished up. Just had an idea, if you want to change that top knot I could send you an Ugha warrior pony tale if you like that look.

Tank is just awesome! I love the idea and it just looks crazy cool! All the weaponry works really well and I am jonesing to see that thig seperate into a flying contraption.

Blade at your blog is going to be awesome as well I like the design of the figure. Now you just need some free time to finish him up.

Can you show me a picture?  I'm definitely open to a hair change.

I had to ditch the missiles on Tank because they belonged to two vehicles that I was customizing.  At first, I didn't realize that they weren't available for use, so now I have to get substitutes.  The two outer guns are removable and can be held by the torso.

I did get to the sculpting on Blade today.  Hopefully I can get some pictures taken and posted before the hurricane hits.  If we lose power it may be a while before we do a post. lol

I even started a completely new gladiator that I really like a lot.  Hopefully I will be able to post that too.

Kitonak Gladiator

There is a video in the blog post showcasing more progress on the Geonosian gladiator action figures that I am working on. I took some pictures that show how Tank separates into two different vehicles, one being airborne. I also did the sculpting work on Blade, and took a few pictures of the progress. I included a lot more finished photos of the Kitonak Gladiator that I finished today so you all will get something new that you haven't seen thrown into the video too.

That's funny.  When Shawn told me he found the Skaar figure I was going to tell him to grab it for me, but I found it the same day in a Toys R Us.  I made sure I threw in the pics of Tank airborne for you.  Glad you liked the update.

KITONAK GLADIATOR: STILL PHOTOS & BACKSTORY

Kitonak Gladiator
created by Darth Daddy

I used a Marvel Skaar action figure for the body and a Droopy McCool head and hands to complete this action figure.

I liked the tattoos on the original figure so I incorporated the design into the figure.

A tribute figure to Dan of the Dead's "Fez Xik" action figure. If it weren't for Dan's "Princess Bride" themed action figure, I would have never thought to create a Kitonak of such size.

BACKSTORY

The two gladiators a week before their battle.

These two gladiators fought together as a team in many battles and were always victorious. It was said that watching them work together to defeat their opponents was like seeing a ballet. They acted with such precision that they easily took apart even the biggest of threats. With a lack of worthy opponents, it was only a matter of time before they would have to meet each other face to face in battle. Surprisingly, when the Kitonak gladiator defeated his Gamorrean friend, the crowd actually granted the Gamorrean mercy for the showing that the two had put on that day. Their meeting in the arena was so sensational that the story was passed down in Geonosian history for generations to come. It would be the only time these two would face each other in fact. They fought together as a team for years after the memorable event took place, but just around the time when the crowd was getting hungry for a rematch, the two both disappeared overnight. It's said outside of Geonosis... that on that night, the two defeated their most challenging opponent ever...the life of being slave, and with their escape... together, they won, their freedom. Searches were made, but they were never found, making one wonder if they ever escaped at all.

"STRONOX" VIDEO UPDATED IN "CUSTOMS I WISH I OWNED"

QUICK MESSAGE

I want to apologize to everyone for falling behind on our "Customs I Wish I Owned" postings. No need to worry, I have plenty of new customizers on the way for you all to check out. I have four new artists that I am preparing to introduce you all to in the weeks to come.

I also have a lot of new pieces to feature in our "Customizer Spotlight" with Star Wars custom action figures created by customizers Luke Sprywalker, Peakob1, Sillof, Omar Rivera, and two new additions created by kr2700/SWK Kustoms and Wraithnine who have been featured before in the "Spotlight".

To hold you all over, I just updated the video for Stronox in our "Customs I Wish I Owned" archives. Check out what he has been working on since I completed his last video.

STRONOX

Stronox is a 33 year old nurse from Pennsylvania. When he isn't parenting, he's either customizing figures, drawing, painting, reading, collecting toys, or gaming.

QUICK ALTERATIONS

As you know I like to introduce the audience at our blog to quick and easy modifications that they can make to their existing action figures to spruce things up a bit. These two action figures are no different.

ULTIMATE BARRISS OFFEE

We really loved Hasbro's new VOTC Barriss Offee action figure, but she didn't have a very battle ready appearance. By combining elements of the Star Wars Saga 2002 Collection 2: Attack of the Clones #12 Barriss Offee [Jedi Padawan] and a few accessories from the new CW Barriss Offee, we were able to create the Ultimate Barriss Offee with an extra interchangeable head sculpt as an alternate head to the more somber head sculpt of the VOTC Barriss, a short cloak to go with the existing hood, and a battle action cloak too. I'm planning on adding an interchangeable right hand so I can keep using the magnet hand from the Star Wars Saga 2002 Collection 2: Attack of the Clones #12 Barriss Offee also.

She looks a lot more battle ready now.

I loved the head sculpt of the original Barriss and wanted to come up with a way to show off the hair of the action figure in this Ultimate edition.

With an Exacto knife I cut of the head of the AOTC Barriss and then used a drill and Dremel to give the head the ability to snap securely onto the neck post of the VOTC figure and have full articulation.

With all these accessories a lot of variations could be produced to enhance play.

SORA BULQ
with Articulated Knees

I boiled the original Saga 2 Sora Bulq action figure to remove his unarticulated legs and replaced them with the CW Eeth Koth legs instead. By boiling the two action figures in hot water for about 5 minutes, the plastic was soft enough to swap out the legs of the figure. I read that JACKOFTRADZE used the same technique with the legs of a Kit Fisto from the Target Geonosis 2-pack. I didn't have one in our fodder so Eeth Koth had to step in to make it happen. At some point I would like to replace the hard goods skirt with a soft good skirt when I find a suitable replacement.

Thanks guys :)  The older head sculpt was way too nice to be so quickly replaced by the newer sculpt.  With a little modification, the old head made a perfect 2nd head to switch out whenever you wanted Barriss in battle mode while still maintaining the super articulation we all love so much.

Look for me to be taking over this post topic going forward.  Dad is taking a backseat on the blog this year and I will be making more of the custom action figures this year.  Anyone who has been at the blog this past month will notice that I an starting to take over the weekly custom action figure post.  Dad is still customizing, but not at the rate of one a week.  He is starting to focus more on the "Customs I Wish I Owned" feature of our blog.  The videos are taking a lot longer to produce and he doesn't have time for both anymore.  He did make a really cool Jedi recently that I'll post soon, and he is making a really cool  Master Zao that he is almost finished sculpting.  I'll also post that figure when he's done, otherwise, I'll be the more prominent customizer at the blog.  Here is my post for this week.

GEONOSIAN JEDI
This Geonosian Jedi is a quick custom action figure that I made that required very little paint work, and just a small amount of accessorizing to complete. I used the skirt of a Clone Wars Eeth Koth, the Geonosian drone action figure from the exclusive Target 2-pack, the Jedi Robe from a CW Shaak Ti action figure, and the hilts of a G.I. Joe Storm Shadow action figure. I only had to paint the jewel blue on the waist covering of the Geonosian. Dad carved the bottom of the lightsaber blades with an Exacto knife so they slid in and out of the hilts with ease.

Can't say how cool it is to see you taking over.  While I really enjoy customizing, I just can't produce at the once a week rate I did last year.  Elias wants to carry the flag going forward and I will do my best to help out in any way I can.  The blog just got to the point where it started taking up 20 to 30 hours a week to do and I don't have it in me anymore.  I feel much more comfortable making 12 figures a year as opposed to 52+.  I think I made more figures than Hasbro last year.  Thanks for all your visits and I'm sure Elias will get the same amount of support going forward.

Thanks so much!! We definitely work hard to make it a fun place for fans of Star Wars customizers.  Glad you like all our links too.  We designed it like that so our blog could double as our home page and we can just have all of our favorite links immediately at our disposal.  Hope we can continue to entertain for the duration.

The Geonosian looks good.  Nice photography and posing, too.

Thanks!!

Yesterday was my birthday, and Dad knows how much I love the custom action figures created by Peakob1. You couldn't imagine my surprise when I opened up my birthday present and it was a box full of Peakob1 action figures. Especially when they were action figures I used to only dream to one day own. I created a video of my new birthday presents that showcase the figures with pictures that were taken by Peakob1. Thanks Chad for making it possible.

Hi everybody.  Here's Dad's latest action figure.  We have to apologize for the lapse in the "Customs I Wish I Owned" videos.  Dad hasn't had time to surf the forums the way that he used to and Animoto changed the interface for video creation that has made the process a lot harder and more time consuming so it may no longer be a weekly feature at the blog.  Just because it isn't a weekly feature, that doesn't mean that it will disappear completely though.  We have tried to add other features to keep the blog fresh.  Anyway here's the new one.

Really nice job DD!  Great work converting the Vos sculpt into something unique; I'm really liking how well the two-toned paint apps on his tabbard and the addition of the soft goods came together.  You hit all the right notes on this one!

Thanks everyone for the complimentary feedback.  The only part of the robes that were modified was using some watered down purple paint to stain the soft goods skirt of the Comic Pack Ki Adi Mundi.  I also painted the upper torso of the figure in scorched brown.

Really fantastic job on Ziro...never get tired of looking at your work on him.

Master Zao has got to be my personal favorite in this group; always enjoyed the brief glimpses of his character in the comics and you've done justice to him in plastic form.  Excellent execution here.

I love how the lekku on the Twi'ilek turned out on the slythmonger; very nice work.  I'm sure I'm probably missing something that just hasn't crossed my mind yet, but what are the GIJoe glow lights this guy is holding supposed to represent?

Glad you all liked the latest batch.

Yeah on my 1st attempt at Ziro, the mouth drove me crazy everytime I looked at it, so I had to give it another go.  I much happier with him now, but I'm still not in love with him when I look at him from every angle.  All but one to be exact.  I still can't stand the way he looks when I look down at him from above and I can't figure out yet the best way to fix that.  Sculpting definitely has its challenges.  If anyone wants to offer any tips, your comments would be greatly appreciated.

@JediMerc
The green props in his hands from the Joe figures are a powerful hallucinogen that he peddles at the Outlander Club on Coruscant.  I wrote a backstory on the blog and when I have time and not posting from my mobile device, I'll add his story to my original post here on the forum.  I figured Elan Sleazebaggano (I don't think I spelled that right, I'm doing it from memory) had those test tubes that he carried and I thought those Joe accessories could maybe used to represent something similiar.

@botwt - Thanks!! You've been creating a lot of really nice customs too.  Definitely missed you during that short absence you had there.

@Tamer - Thanks so much for putting the galleries together.  We really appreciate all the hard work involved!

Here are three customs that I made for Yakface.com's Secret Santa.  I'd really like to start one up over here at the Yards for next year.  I'll be willing to coordinate it all.  Let me know if you all are interested.  With all the amazing talent we have here, I'd love to see what everybody turns out.

Anyway here are three customs I sent out to customizer Darth Phantom of Germany:

We did try a secret Santa one year and I hate to say that some folks did not send out their agreed upon gift or it was so late that some folks didn't get their gift till Easter.

Thanks L.E.!  He's just a head swap, I painted the lower arms, Rebel symbol,  and sculpted on the commlink with Apoxie Sculpt.  I got the head from Slayer Design Studio.  I had a hard time giving him away.  He was my favorite too.  Hopefully we can do a Secret Santa next year here at the Yards.  I told Tamer I'd volunteer to run it.  It really gets the Christmas spirit flowing through the house.

Just finished!! Here's a video of the completed entry courtesy of Darth Daddy & Elias of "Customs for the Kid":

http://animoto.com/play/62tseJY8zvUEJI6n7HzWyQ (http://animoto.com/play/62tseJY8zvUEJI6n7HzWyQ)

When Elias and I set out to create our smuggler teams that included the smuggler with their mate, we decided to make half of each others team.  I made an Ewok smuggler and he made me a monkey lizard for my mate.  On the other smuggler team, Elias created an Arkanian Offshoot and I created her Twi'lek mate.  It was a great way to put a crew together for the new ship I made and stay within the rules of the contest.

Pop the Ewok grew up a slave on Coruscant.  He was kidnapped as a baby and was kept as a pet until he got older and the family lost interest.  Old enough to set out on his own, Pop hit the streets and never looked back.  He befriended a monkey lizard with a robotic eye named Tiet Pescow and together they worked at a space ship repair shop until one day a golden opportunity presented itself.  A customer came to have his  K-37 Starstreak racing ship serviced but was struck dead by an out of control speeder.  Pop and Tiet got the vessel home while their employer was at lunch and quit their jobs later that afternoon.  They saw the ship as their ticket to riches and that night decided to become smugglers.  Pop flew the craft and his monkey lizard mechanic/mate Tiet was often found tinkering around in the engine room of the vessel.  The ship is so rare that very few spacers know the punch the spacecraft packs, but these two knew they had something special and they quickly rose to prominence in smuggling circles and throughout the crime underworld.

Pop and Tiet are currently being kept company by an Arkanian Offshoot smuggler named Daala and her Twi'lek mate, Maari  former slaves under what was left of the remnants of The Crucible.  Both had risen through the ranks of the organization and bore the tattoos of the order.  The Flames of the Crucible were a runic language usually tattooed on the members of The Crucible, an organization of slavers. The tattoos held different meanings and could be found on the arms, chest, and even face of anyone within the ranks of the Crucible.  The Flames tattooed on the face of Daala were specific to the minders and internal security forces who had, through talent or deed, become a permanent part of the Crucible. They were unique to them, whereas the general populace didn't have them, nor did the minions in specialized roles. Tattoos on the arms of members of the Crucible like the ones found on Maari  were usually a reference to military insignia, representing rank and the particular group of trainees a minder is assigned to.  Some members, such as Daala, were known to bear the Flames of the Crucible on their faces. In Daala's case the tattoos actually meant "Protector," the name that was given to her by the slaves of the Crucible. These two escaped The Crucible and made a very successful living as smugglers.  That was until recently when they had their spaceship stolen. Now they are earning some fast credits traveling with Pops providing security on the riskier ventures he has been involved with recently.  They are hoping they can earn enough to get another ship.  The four have found that they make one great team working together and serious thought is being given to keeping this team together by all.

Pop is hoping they will get a lead on the stolen spaceship so he can help his friends get their ship back.

Pop and Tiet are PERFECT! Can't help but say they are a bit "cute" too - sorry, can't help it LOL!

Pop's little ewok speeder kicks butt - great use of parts!!!!

The ship reminds me of something from out of waterworld especially the below deck :)

Great work!

Thanks Dayton :)

This was another team project from me and Dad. I designed the figure and Dad created a speeder bike for my custom action figure. Dad wanted to create one of these speeder bikes ever since he saw a speeder bike and Mandalorian created by Luke Sprywalker. Dad bought the Storm Hawks toy and it sat in our fodder bin for almost a year. When I grabbed a Twi'lek head Dad procured from Slayer Design Studios and placed it on an Entertainment Earth Rav Bralor body, it inspired him to get to work. I liked the color of the armor already, so I only asked for him to paint the head for me. You couldn't imagine my excitement when he made me a speeder bike to go with her as well.

Dad took me to Target and I asked him if he could buy me the new CW Seasee Tiin that we saw when we were there.  I knew the helmet was just what I wanted to complete this custom.  Dad painted it to match her armor and then weathered her up.

Thanks so much guys.  I had been wanting to make that bike for ages, and it was cool to make it for one of Elias' figures.

As you know we are pretty big Clone Wars fans here at home.  We haven't missed an episode yet.  So probably like any other fans out there, we wish more of the characters introduced on the show made it to plastic.  So since they haven't, it falls on us customizers to fill in the gap.  One such character for us was R5-P8.

R5-P8 was an R5-series astromech droid produced by Industrial Automaton. It was an assassin droid of Hondo Ohnaka's pirate gang during the Clone Wars. It had a blaster pistol fixed on its head, so it could serve both repairs and security purposes.

I created this custom droid that appeared in Season 1 of the Clone Wars "The Gungan General" episode just by repainting the new Vintage R5-D4 action figure that can be found now on pegs everywhere. As soon as the figure came out, I knew I wanted to try and make this droid even though there are rumors circulating that he may find his way to a proper release by Hasbro down the road. I used the gun from the Toys R' Us Nikto Guard and modified it by cutting pieces off some guns in our fodder bin. Nothing too crazy was done to make this one. What you see is what you get.

I think I can pull that off.  It's funny, I haven't touched my paints or the Apoxie Sculpt in over a month.  I keep putting it off.  Not sure if I'd call it a break, but I have been trying to avoid work intensive pieces and get some time away with all the NPKB work that I've been doing.  This will get me back in the swing of things.

So I accepted L.E.'s challenge and I sculpted legs onto the Gran Jedi youngling.  I also added Neomodian and Avozse Jedi younglings to Elias' collection over the weekend.  Also in our latest post over at the blog is an old Quermian Jedi youngling that we bought on ebay, but was damaged in shipping.  We included pictures of the repaired Jedi youngling in the post as well.

So I'm not sure if you've noticed but I've been working on a Jedi Temple that's posted on here and I was wondering if you'd be able to make me a set of Jedi Younglings, more specifically the ones from AOTC. I've made the veranda training room and I would like to add them in of Yoda training them. I did order a few of the actual figures, but they didn't offer much in this line, or in the way of sub figures that we're main characters.

Thanks,
Ryan

Thanks guys!  When I started putting this one together, Elias shot me a lot of questioning looks. Especially before I started to sculpt her.

The whole time I was making her I started thinking to myself who is going to want to see her dance?  The only answer I could settle on was another Aqualish.

Really glad she's finished now.  Another WIP off the shelf. Too many of those these days.

I'm hoping to eliminate as many lingering projects as I can, but instead I keep getting distracted with spontaneous projects like the Jedi younglings.

The life of a customizer.  Got to love it!

BROTHERS

Dad threw these two action figures together in seconds after watching the season finale of Clone Wars Season 4. He used the head from an extra Vintage Darth Maul we had on the Infinities Maul from the exclusive comic pack. No modification was needed on the head and it can help you all through the wait until a proper release is issued later this year. Since the body was the only one we had, Dad stopped short of doing anything else to the figure.

Dad also cut the horn on the head of an extra Savage Opress that we had so he looked like he did in the latest story arc.

Darth Maul & Savage Opress

If you were wondering if it were possible to do a head swap the answer is yes. It's a little snug, but with a minimal amount of Force it fits. No tooling needed.

I found him at the supermarket for only $3.  I had him sitting around since before Christmas, and was planning on running a contest at the blog and offer him as a prize, but since we didn't have a forum, I wasn't sure how to go about entries.  After the episode I figured I'd use the head of our extra for a battle damaged Opress.  I considered putting him on ebay, but I hate seeing people pay really high prices for rare figures.

Hey Jay. The body is in pieces. I am in the process of giving him ball jointed hips and ankles and doing what Hasbro should of done in the first place.  I was talking to Stronox on the phone last night and he gave me his recipe.

I have to retake the photo of the figure from behind because the shot I had was blurry and I needed to get to bed and didn't have time to take another.

Thanks guys! I am really trying to vary up the body types in Elias' collection.  This guy is one of my all-time favorite action figures.  He didn't photograph that well, but I love the way he looks in hand.  I'm regretting posting him, because I wish I saved him for the TOR contest even though I have no idea what I would have used for the other two figures.  I really don't have much TOR style fodder.

Thanks L.E.  I actually didn't have to sculpt this one.  All simple assembly and paint.  Gluing the horns on was the only tedious part.

Really like your latest customs, geat paint apps on all of these really well done. What head did you use for the fat "Maul"? Also your Ziro's tattoos on the belly look really good, I like how you toned them down so they dont appear like they are just "painted" on. Great stuff.

The head for the fat Zabrak came from Slayer Design Studios.  I just modified it by adding horns from a shirtless Savage to make it a Zabrak.  I've been using a lot of their heads lately.  Thanks for the nice feedback.

I'm going to spray on the dull cote when I get home.  So glad this one's done.  I just wrapped up the Unhooded Jawa too.  I still have to take the pics though.  Glad you like the new stuff I've been doing.  With all the amazing work I've been seeing in the forums these days, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle.

dread to think how much a comissioned one would cost ....

Definitely cheaper for friends, but it's a pretty labor intensive figure.  Now that I know what is needed it would probably go faster.  If the CW Jabba figure were cheaper, it would definitely help to reduce the cost.

This is a really quickly put together custom. Putting together a custom a week for the blog can sometimes be a real undertaking. So I like to give our readers an easy custom that they can do at home every now and again, which provides me with a way to get a break from spending 6 hours a week on more advanced action figures.  This version of Ahsoka can be done in less than an hour.  I also included a repaint of R7-A7 that I did over the summer and never posted anywhere.  I figured with the release of Ahsoka it would be an ideal time to snap a few pics of him too.

excellent custom!  where did the goggles come from mate ?

I painted Hondo Ohnaka's goggles silver and used a black wash on the yellow lenses.  I made an incision on each side of her head where her face meets her head tails to hold the glasses into place.  If you do it right, the incisions are invisible.

May the 4th be with you all on this fantastic Star Wars day.

Why fantastic?

Well, because I just finished a project that I have been wanting to complete for a very long time. I finally finished a Numa action figure.

She's sculpted entirely by hand.  The arms are modified ones from a Ben Quadrinaros action figure.  The feet are from a Vintage Phantom Menace Anakin Skywalker.  The head and torso were made with Apoxie Sculpt that was applied to the torso and head of a Hiccup How to Train Your Dragon action figure that I dremeled down to a skeleton.  I made Numa a cross between the Clone Wars depiction of Numa and the Sideshow version that came with Waxer and Boil.  This was my first attempt at sculpting a head from scratch, but it worked out alright.  This probably now stands as my favorite custom of all time, but I'm sure I'll unseat it one day.

I worked on this figure while interviewing Lucasclones with Tamer on CAFN.

I've seen her on a lot of fan lists asking Hasbro to make her, but the Clone Wars kid friendly line hasn't created the cool Star Wars children like Numa and Jaybo Hood.  I guess they'll be sidelined like Kitster and Wald.

Anyhow, here she is ;)

So I haven't been doing anything fancy lately.  The last few projects I tackled were just busy work.  Little modifications to existing figures or simple head swaps to create action figures we really wanted.

CAPTAIN REX and COMMANDER WOLFFE

I saw some really stellar versions of these characters given the same treatment by other customizers that were a lot more impressive, but I just went for the quick fix on these two so I could work on some more pressing projects that I was enjoying more.

Thanks everybody!  If it weren't for Peakob1, who knows when I would have started this project.  Really glad it's moving forward.  If only there was an exclusive battlefront style figure pack with Hondo's gang in it.

Based on the feedback I received on Peg Leg Piit, I guess I'll call her finished.  I wanted to make the braids longer, but I'd have to buy two more Hondo Ohnaka's for the parts.  Maybe when I have some molding and casting skills to put to use I can give her the quick upgrade.  These days I feel like every custom I've made is a WIP.  The more tools I add to my skill set, the more I want revisit older figures and spruce them up to current standards.

Thanks again for all your uplifting comments.

I always loved that pirate episode and seeing them reproduced makes for some great characters to add to any custom collection. Excellent work.

Yeah it was a lot of fun to work with another customizer too to get it done.  It would be really cool to see a contest where customozers team up to do a project.

customozers team up to do a project.

Now that is a fine idea. Perhaps needs to be fleshed out a bit, but I will put it in Spry's and Clonehead's hands to see if we can work out the particulars. We have a good idea what our next one (contest) is gonna be after our Hide In Plain Sight one, but perhaps the contest after this we can do this.

Thanks so much.  The pirate project was a blast.

Lately I have been looking at my customs and the longer I participate in the hobby, the more I feel like every custom I make is a work in progress.  The biggest reason is that I keep adding to my skill set and I keep learning new techniques that could make past successes even better.  So for a while I will be revisiting older figures while I also add in some new ones.

The latest figure I revisited was my Wookiee Padawan.  To be honest all that I did was add a black wash to the figure, but I also hated the photo shoot I did for the figure. Therefore, I did another that way I could show just how articulated the figure was since I didn't really demonstrate it the first time around.

Anyway, here's a few of the new pics:

I love these pirates. I keep sneaking into Elias' room at all hours of the day to look at them. Lol.

Unfortunately, the next installment from me isn't anything fancy, but it's my entry for the Hide in Plain Site customs contest.  I have been making a custom a week for almost two years now.  This thread is only the figures I made in my second year of customizing.  Anywho, because I created the insane expectation on the blog of posting one custom a week, there are weeks where I show a custom that is fast, easy and approachable for a first-time customizer to bring more people into the hobby and promote the art.  This week's custom is a quickie.

Taken from the blog:

Nicola Acris

"When Dad set out to create this action figure he wanted to make one that you could all create at home. The two figures he used have been found on shelves in retail stores for months. With all the repacks this season flooding store pegs, now would be a great time to treat yourself to a custom action figure and actually add a new figure to your collection for once. It's not like we are able to find any of the new Star Wars figures at retail.  All he used was the G.I. Joe Renegades Tunnel Rat and the Clone Wars Cold Weather Plo Koon. The head and hands are from the Plo Koon and the rest is all Tunnel Rat. He painted the arms with a few coats of Citadel's Delvan Mud wash and the hands with Reaper's Earth Brown acrylic paint. Dad squirted some glue from the hot glue gun into the hole in Plo Koon's head so it would fit tightly on the head peg and still be able to maintain the articulation of a ball joint."

Dad threw this figure together and I painted him.  He is made from a Wilrow Hood body and Fi-Ek Sirch head and hands. The vest is from some G.I. Joe fodder and the hoses are from a Bossk figure and some other fodder we had laying around.

Loving the Mechanic. No offence to any mechanics out there but just what I expect a mechanic to look like, Slightly overweight and frowning. you can almost hear him suck in through his teeth and say "hmmm, its gonna cost ya". Nice paint job too, good shading and highlights makes it look well worn. The only thing I'd add is some oil stains to his overalls.

Thanks for the nice comments on the last action figure.

It's been a few weeks since I have worked on any action figures.  I prepped a Guri for sculpting about two weeks ago, but I haven't done anything else since then.  Fortunately I still have an update for you all.  This is a video of customs that just aren't sitting right with me.

Taken from the blog:

CUSTOMS FOR THE KID: JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF MISFIT STAR WARS TOYS

"So we know it's been a long time since we did a post.  I went away with my mom on vacation for a week, and Dad has been working every day for the last two weeks.  Basically, we haven't had a whole lot of time to put into the blog.  Fortunately, Dad stopped home in between assignments and photographed some work in progress pictures of some of our strangest figures to date.  In this video we have a turban wearing monkey lizard, a cross dressing Hutt, a breathing compromised Nautolan Imperial officer, a gladiator who is all teeth and a H'nemthe Jedi.  Some of these figures may just need their paint application to be wrapped up, but the Hutt and the gladiator Dad has no idea what he wants to do to finish them up.  Any suggestions?  If you do, please put your suggestions in the comments section below."

This H'nemthe Jedi was created with the body of the Vintage Kit Fisto and the head of the M'liyoom.  All I had to do was paint the neck post and the hands to get this one done.  Dad's still taking a break from customizing, so I'll try and keep things going.

Here's the latest post from the blog.  This figure was sitting on a shelf forever.  I sculpted the hair on the head, but never got around to finishing her.  While I restored the archives for our Customizer Spotlight, Elias practiced painting the body.

Taken from the blog:

To create this action figure, we used the Clone Wars Padme Amidala in Adventure Gear body and the head of a Leesub Sirln head that Dad modified with Apoxie Sculpt to give her a different hairstyle.  Every now and again the Leesub Sirln action figure can be found at clearance at Toys R' Us.  Since female action figure bodies are hard to come by, we always try and grab as many as we can.  Dad had me practice painting on this figure and then he added the finishing touches to complete the figure.

Thanks guys. I know Elias will be happy with your comments.

For anyone who is interested, I was interviewed on the SWAG77 Podcast this weekend.  I got to talk customizing, the Kessel Run Review, Imperial Shipyards, the upcoming customizing panel at Celebration VI, and Custom Action Figure News.  We even got to follow all that up with talk of the Hasbro figures shown at SDCC and talk about episodes of the Clone Wars from Season 4.

I couldn't find one.  When I talked with Chad this morning, he said he was subscribed to SWAG77 on Itunes ever since Jenn was on.  Maybe I can find it there when I get off work.  Where did you find the one Jenn was on?

It was there for hers for some reason. I wonder if they changed their format cause they didn't like that? Not sure. I think maybe Jenn got it for me too. I can't recall. It was a good listen today though.

Dad threw this one together on the fly today.  Originally he was just going to hang out at the kitchen table with me while I created a custom.  Next time I looked over, figures were boiling on the stove top and Dad was at it.  He sculpted hair with Apoxie Sculpt onto the head of a Clone Wars Even Piel from which he also used the hands and lower legs along with the torso, arms and upper thighs of a Discover the Force Mawhonic.  The bandana around his neck is from a G.I.Joe Tunnel Rat and the back pack is from a Vintage Dengar.  The arm band is from an Indiana Jones figure.

That is another brilliant figure! This go is so cool, really love this one. He has such a grimey, classic yet original look. You just can't beat being able to add sculpted details to your figures. Elias, you are the luckiest kid ever! Your collection must be staggering at this point! The best part is it's full of one of a kind customs. I would love to see all of your collection one day.

That is the best Lannik custom I've ever seen.  Yes, it is the only Lannik custom I've ever seen but never mind.  Very creative.  Now I know what to do if I ever get another Mawhonic figure.

Thanks guys!  I actually still have a little more sculpting to do on the braids to add in the fine details.  So I guess he's still a WIP.  I couldn't do the detail work until the skeleton for the braids was dry.  Anytime I tried, the braid would weaken and fall apart.  Hopefully I will get to it soon.

Not sure if anyone saw the 2 year anniversary video Shawn put on the front page, but to celebrate 2 years of customizing and blogging about the hobby/community, I did a short video slideshow of all the figures Elias and I created in our second year.  Here's the link if you haven't seen it yet and are interested in checking it out:

Big CONGRATS Brian and Elias! Your blog is such a cool creation, love that you have showcased so many customizers work and not just your own. A true labor of love that is very time consuming. Thanks for everything you have done and continue doing for the customizing community. You guys are the greatest!
