Title: Q&A by members for members
Post by: Darth More on December 04, 2022, 06:00:17 AM
We usually wait for Hasbro's brand team to offer their next Q&A session, but I thought why don't we start one here as well? It would be fun to ask each other some questions here. What do you think?

I don't see a problem with this. Good idea if you ask me.

Great! I was thinking of a weekly Q&A session asking other members different question about the hobby and the passion for customizing.

Maybe we can start on Friday and everyone who wants to join has got a week to answer the question(s) of the week?

Sounds like a great idea. Wish I had time to make a graphic for it when I post it as news.

Hello and welcome to our new, weekly Question & Answer session where you can ask other members your questions. You can write your question(s) in the comment section below and everyone who wants to join in has got a week to answer them. This first Q & A panel will then be shared next Friday on the same places.

I'd be happy to read and answer your questions for sure! Feel free to join us and thank you for checking out ImperialShipyards!

Awesome, thanks for sharing! Here are my first questions for you guys!

Tamer: I got to admit that I get a little nervous when you don't come online for a couple days. Don't know why, but it makes me worry and hope you're okay.
That said I'm also aware that you host this on your free time, which I appreciate very much! That thought made me wonder, what your family thinks of you being the admin of this forum.

What do you enjoy most about hosting this site? Does it give you a hard time sometimes getting up early in the morning before work and share the latest content of our forum?
What does your wife say about all this? Can you share some interesting stories with your family as well? This actually lead me to the idea to start this Q&A panel here. I hope it's fun and of course you don't have to answer my questions. I don't want to get too personal  :)

My Question to everyone: What is the advantage to you of still using a forum like Imperial Shipyards in times of Facebook, Instagram and all those places? What do you like most about the concept of a forum like this?
I'm happy to read your thoughts. Thank you and best regards from Germany!

I personally think that using a forum like this is that you are going to get more information and no stupid comments to your question/s especially for those people that have had little to no idea where to start on a custom figure or diorama.

Yeah there's certainly more depth to forums. Social media platforms, it's just, heres my stuff, with no context or explanation, or recipes or steps involved or anything.
To piggyback on hemble. On forums everyone knows eachother, no one makes smart ass comments or anything, it's all civil.
Title: Re: Q&A by members for members

hemble: I agree, I got one recent example. In a FaceBook forum for Star Wars Miniatures someone asked for a stat card of a character I didn't know before. He is from The Old Republic which was released long after Wizards of the Coast stopped making those Miniatures.
No pictures were provided, only the name and all I could find on google images were pictures of the game character. So I asked if there is an official card for that character/miniature.
And two other member immediately reacted to my question with a laughing emoji  ;D
So instead of just answering my question they made fun of it. I asked because there are countless custom made cards and miniatures by now.
Anyway I checked my stack of extra cards to find that this particular one is not upon them.
Someone offers it for $80 on feebay. Cheers. I'm done with Facebook.

What do you enjoy most about hosting this site?

I think what I enjoy most about this site is the interaction and the members and friends I have met here who share my interests. I mean this thing started out as 3 buds who were kind of just wanting to have a place where folks could interact free from the "trolls" that are out there in internet land. None of us knew a thing about building websites or creating forums, or anything but we just kind of jumped in and did it. I credit Phatty with a lot of that pushing and prodding where I finally just jumped in and took some online classes and I can't stand it when I can't figure something out so I am basically a self taught coder.

And then folks starting joining up and sharing their action figure customs and other custom artwork and dioramas and that became our identity. I mean I still get lost in the forums some days just mezmirized by the work folks have posted here. I mean I treat these forums as kind of a Library of Congress of artwork. It would almost be like a national treasure was lost if this wasn't maintained. So I guess outside of just being able to enjoy this hobby with other folks I just get to wake up with the Christmas morning feeling of what great artwork am I going to get to see today? That and feeling like maybe I can promote said artists and get them some spotlight they deserve. I mean all the various customizing is a true labor of love and never gets the attention it deserves in my opinion.

Does it give you a hard time sometimes getting up early in the morning before work and share the latest content of our forum?

I will be honest at one time I was making this too much like work and I had to step back and take a bit of a time out. I was trying to do too many things and feeling like I wasn't doing any of them well let alone having fun with this. So I have since settled myself into some pretty strict limits regarding the time I give this place as I was not balanced before. Doing this I got the fun back and remembered some of what this place was created for. Now I do what I can when I have the time and don't feel "guilty" when some days I run out of time or real life means I can't get on the site that day. That and knowing there are good folks here who watch the place while I am away doesn't hurt either.

What does your wife say about all this? Can you share some interesting stories with your family as well?

About the only thing my wife says is that "she is going to kill me because she hates the sound of typing" LOL. I have to admit without her support I doubt I would have lasted as there have been some interesting situations over the years. She doesn't get what I do, but she understands it is a part of me and I need it to remain me. My daughter loves it as she has been raised with all this and loves customs and the other projects displayed here. Some of her most valuable possessions are some of the customs folks here have gifted her over the years. A lot of things have come and gone in her room, but I still find those things on prominent display like a Phantom of the Opera, Dragon, Wookie, Jedi, and other customs. She thinks it is "Cool".

My wife just said she likes that is a positive safe place for folks like me to have to interact as there is so much awful stuff out there.

So, I am not quite sure if that is what you wanted so feel free to ask any follow ups you wanted. I am just glad folks feel free to be creative here and not judged, but repsected and even admired for their creativity and ingenuity. That is what keeps me coming back and making sure the lights stay on here.

I have to admit sometimes I feel like just ditching everything outside of the main page and the forums. Social Media Sites like Facebook rarely leave me feeling good after I am on them.

Sometimes I feel like it is my job to spread the good on them and never does it feel like I make any headway. Guess it matters to the one starfish.

It matters to one collect...I mean starfish  :) Thanks for all you do, Tamer, to support the hobby and this "space" for sharing our mutual enthusiasm.

To Philipp's question: I'm not a social media user. The only reason I have Facebook is because it's a channel of communication for smaller toy companies like Boss Fight and Chicken Fried Toys, oh and something about work ;) One way to manage my time and other commitments is to not add stuff, so no Instagram, etc. Plus, I find that I like interacting with and learning from the folk around here. I know some folks are on several sites (like yakface.com) but it seems most can only stay really active on one ( or maybe two). My life is too full to try and manage many threads. This was my first site, so here I stay.

And things like this is why I keep the fire stoked. Thanks Starchaser for the comments.

I so agree, there is just no way for me to be involved on all the stuff out there.

I made an Instagram account about a year ago. It's alright, honestly I've only made 10 posts. In that year ive seen Instagram go from picture oriented to video oriented to compete with Tiktok. That was the whole point of Instagram was about pictures. I see guys that have been on there far longer than me, many who where regular members here, get sidelined by reels. How do you make reels in our hobby?  You can, they aren't great. I see Instagram becoming less user friendly. Forums they're all about photography. However with Instagram and other outlets you can get perks and kickbacks, which I couldn't give two shits about. It's the way of things.
Which brings me to the con of forums, they're becoming less mobile friendly. The last update, i cant even see the front page. I click the banner and instead of sending me to the front it takes me back to the forum. I dunno if it's because of being mobile or what but.. same with posting pictures mobile. I've had difficulty, but figured it out, and have instructed new members how to, but I think that's a hindrance. Even though i have a pc/ laptop i still use my phone a vast majority of the time. Being mobile friendly is important. But im a millennial.
With so many game changers, you have to change the way you play the game.

Yeah, we were migrated to a new server and a bit of the forums got messed up. I need to find the code for the banner and get it set to the right address again. That is a bluehost issue, but ah don't get me started on ISPs.

As for being phone friendly, I get it, but for the life of me I don't know why the smf forums developers won't develop a mobile app for smf forums. Maybe my next hobby will be learning how to develop phone apps. Still, I can't stand to surf the web on anything other than a computer. My wife, on the other hand, never sets her phone down so I get it.

I still prefer a setting like this to any other social media sites I have tried (FB, Twitter, Insta, etc.).

I also like that you can embed videos now in smf. Still, I don't think any platform is gonna be perfect.

I am happy to report that the forums banner at the top is now fixed and goes to the main page. Only took me three hours to find the header code. Argh!!!!

What I enjoy most about this forum is the community we have here. It's a place that feels like home for me.
From my technical perspective I love the forum because it's organized and I can even open new sub-categories. This is the major advantage of our forum in my opinion: having categories!
On Facebook and Instagram it's close to impossible to find a specific post, picture or comment a second time, unless you saved it right away. All the socials are so much more transitory.
I prefer something that remains.

Add: The search function of the forum works very well, too!

I hate to even say this, but it looks like a developer has made some inroads into developing an android app for smf forums. I am gonna look into it.

It looks like I would have to learn how to make apps, but the guy has done a lot of the work already.

That would be pretty cool! An imperial shipyards app. But thats totally up to you tamer, id understand if it was problematic. But yeah the banner works great now. I wasn't sure why it wasn’t working, but you fixed it.

Toy photography has gained a lot of steam lately, thats the biggest trend. I'm going more that route. Perhaps in time we can have a toy photography section. It's almost like dioramas, but not really. It's kind of a class of it's own. Technically we're all toy photographers.

Wow, it worked. I know just enough to get myself into trouble. Anyhow all you need to do is go to your App Store and search for tapatalk:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quoord.tapatalkpro.activity&hl=en

Once you open it up it will want you to follow groups, but if you scroll to the bottom and type in Imperial Shipyards it will come up. I am not sure it gives you all the stuff you can do on the computer, but I know for sure it does let you type and upload pictures.

There is a free version and a paid pro version, but the free version has a small ad at the bottom you have to see, but it didn't seem too bad imo.

JDeck try her out and let me know what you think.

One I have for everyone is what are your interests outside of customizing and AF Collecting?

Spending time with my family & friends.

Beyond that: STAR WARS is my life!  ;D
- university takes most of my time, but I love what I do!
- in my rare spare time:
-- model building & wood working
-- mountain biking
-- diving
-- cars
-- drawing & painting
-- collecting merch of Pokémon, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, T-shirts
-- and music is a big part of my life! Music plays along with all the stuff above. I love listening to music while customizing figures for example. Especially soundtracks.

I don't know if you can call it a hobby but I've been getting into home bartending. First time having a home bar. I always went out, I thought drinking at home was sad and boring, but now I have the opposite opinion. I go out, order a drink, and they either don't have the ingredients or they have no idea what it is I'm ordering. My bar is growing. I make a new drink every week or so, until the ingredients run out or go bad.  I got spotify hooked up to my TV, I just need live TV and sports packages, and I'm good to go.

I‘m on my phone now using Tapatalk.
Got the free version yesterday and uploaded 3 pictures of my latest store report. The free version only allows me to upload pictures in medium quality, which didn’t convince me.
I much prefer being on my computer anyways, but I still think this will be practical at some point when I’m on a convention and share my impressions there directly with you.
I will have to think about the option of paying $35.99 for a life-long premium membership. The premium option allows me to upload high res pics as well.

My biggest hope of this app is that it will drive more members to our forum.
I‘m going to promote it on Instagram as well for all smartphone users.

Question for Week 3: What are you looking forward to this year? What are you hyped for the most?

I hope Hasbro will give us an Imperial Shock Trooper using the latest Stormtrooper tooling. And I'm hyped for the upcoming all-new Phase II Clone Trooper! Please, let it be as good as the Stormtrooper. I'll go bankrupt.

Thanks DM. It's a good skill to have. It's a lot like cooking. I'm still building up my tools, just making due with what I have, but it's still more than some bars I've been to. I make my own juices and syrups, which makes all the difference in the world.

I'm looking forward to completing my army build, at least for the most part. Maybe Mandalorian season 3 will introduce another trooper variant hasbro will make a year later. We got Piett and Gerjerrod, the potential for more new officers.
I didn't get a whole lot of customs and things done in 2022, I had a lot going on. This year I hope to do some cool stuff. I'm a little behind schedule. I was hoping to start some Endor Photography this week, but I need to get my hobbyroom in order first.

I hope the rumors are true for TVC black Krrsantan. He's my favorite guy in TBOBF.
The Endor Bunker will be cool. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but good none the less.
Looking forward to Mandalorian season 3, the rest of Bad Batch S2, acolyte sounds interesting. Ahsoka would be cool to resolve the Rebels series. I don't know about Skeleton Crew. I like Jude Law is in it, but outside of that I'm not sure about any rumors. I'll watch it. 2023 will be cool.

Here is a small one that would t be so bad.
I would like to make a Cloud city landing platform for the Falcon or Slave 1 complete with lights to mount hanging on the wall. A proper cloudy sunset wall photo behind could round it out nicely.

Thanks, yes, I was always a guitar guy, ever since I was a kid. Cheaper, takes less room than drums do. I knew a guy, believe it or not, who had a full drum kit on the ship, when I was in the Navy. He was a sonar tech and had the kit set up in a sonar equipment room, 2-3 vertical ladders down, through 3 watertight hatches, under the water level. How in the heck did he get it down there? There were some amps set up down there. I remember taking my guitar down those ladders one time and him and I trading back and forth with guitar and drums.
So, the son in law gave me a five piece set about 6 months ago. I hadn’t touched a drum since I was in the navy. In usual Clonehead fashion, I added pieces to the kit until now where it looks like something Neal Peart  might of had when he was in high school.
I’m having fun with it. Can’t play before or after
9 since it’s so noisy, or when the wife is sleeping. It keeps the window of opportunity to practice fairly short sometimes.
I need like a soundproofed warehouse somewhere.

I have a display cabinet full of vehicles right now, but I always made that cabinet with the idea to do a "Veer's Briefing" Dio once the Walkers got done with blowing up Echo Base. Kind of a Hoth look, but with an Imperial theme and Vader either standing in the background or attending on a holo or something like that.

My ideas are always in a chaotic state of change and evolution. I still want to work on my Galgrebaa Spaceport project. Basically a little city. I think I'll get an industrial/garage shelf same as my army shelf, and create streets, buildings, and have a prper home for my customs and favorite figures. Originally I wanted a large table, but a shelf would work better. It's been a while since I've worked on it, but I haven't lost sight.

I have always love seeing folks turn a shelf type system into a diorama or a bunch of mini-dios. Seems like it would be a great way to show off your custom stuff. JDeck with your lighting skills you could do all kinds of neating things with your build ins.

Your Spaceport project is one of a kind and telling by the clicks quite popular among visitors of our fourm.
My dream project is to build a true 1/18 scale HAVw A6 Juggernaut (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/HAVw_A6_Juggernaut) better known as Clone Turbo Tank as seen on Kashyyyk at the end of the Clone Wars. I'm going to print its body, but the inner construction will be RC. Cannot wait to roll across the fields with this one in approx. 30 years. lol
Another one is a true 1/18 scale LAAT/i and the Republic Dropship, likely completely 3D printed.

Personally I like dioramas. I like anything creative really, whatever people come up with. Hell, I even like food and drink recipes. I think sometimes good posts get lost, but Tamer does a good job of networking and getting as much exposure as possible.  I found this site years ago looking at diorama pictures on Google images.

I spent some time thinking about how I could realize it. And to my surprise I instantly found a suitable base for it online. I even got both of them for free! Picked up the TV shelf last night after work and the lady who gave it to me said I saved it from the dumpster.
Many ideas of what to do with them (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10225.msg233517#msg233517), but do you know what this is going to be?
