thanks guys!!!! what great community we have here!!!
-
Do the figures have to be Republic Commando's?
-
The figure and dio can be any subject from any of the 5 released books, so in short no they do not have to be the RC's themselves
-
Do you want me to email Mrs Traviss? I emailed her just 2 weeks ago to day hi and show her my Ordo custom. (which she loved) I think she would get a real kick out of this contest.
-
Well that was going to be part 2 of the contest, asking her to stop by and have a look. , so sure feel free
-
Emailed and done! Now to start skimming the RC novels again to find a scene!! I LOVE this contest idea!!
-
guys iv never read the books lol i dnt do reading haha i just cant get in to reading a book lol
so is it basically a diorama to do with the republic commando theme ()rr
-
Well you can get the short story by looking on the wiki or wookiepedias,
It really is a great story and the contest was a way to give Karen Treviss a send off, ISY style. We will miss her writting style and fantastic character development in the Star Wars universe.
-
I have an idea already!
-
Just make sure to keep the idea to yoursleves, NO Spoliers
-
Kandosii!
I'm a HUGE Traviss fan, well, mainly her RC and IC work, just finished Imp Commando: 501st Can't wait.. but in away, I don't want the next(last) book to come.. I mean, sigh.. then there's no more. It wouldn't be the same if someone else picked it up. If you're not a book person, see if you can find the Audio novels(if they make them).. then just listen to it while driving to work/school or whatever.. seriously.. just sit down and read them, lol.. throw the first book on top of your toilet and read it next time you gotta drop one and you'll never want to leave(please do)...
I got into a discussion over this a little while ago with a friend. He said he didn't like the books cause there's no Luke, or Obi-Wan, Anakin, Vader... etc. You know what? After a couple chapers, you won't care. Seriously, I didn't think I'd get into it.. I was hooked and could barely wait for each and every new release... I'm not one of those book guys that reads a book in a couple of days, I usually read one or two a month... but with the RC novels.. I'd find myself taking it to work, in the crapper, heck, even just sitting on the couch watching the Bears loose, I'd be reading it. I don't know what it is about them that I like so much.. I like most of the SW books for just being SW.. other books I read, cause I have an interest in the medium... but with these, I actually feel myself emotionally connected to the characters and feel for them, whether it's the whole family like Father/brotherhood connection Kal shares with his boys, or the way the Commandos are made to feel like real life individuals instead of random clone fodder(meat cans, lol), I dunno.. I'm not a book reviewer, but if I was, I'd def give these books 4 THUMBS UP! Seriously... do yourself a favor and READ THEM!!!
When I first started reading the first book, I was instantly hooked and got the game and played it.. I loved the music in it... they had a site for it and you could listen to the tracks, but then after a couple years, the site was taken down... finally a couple years ago I found this site:
http://www.clonecommandos.net/music/index.php
You can download the whole soundtrack... DO IT! Listen to it while you customize.. seriously... might give you that boost you needed to finish that one custom.. and next thing you know, you'll be singing "Vode An" at work, lol..
Anyway.. I'm psyched about this.. more to see what everyone does, but also to finally kick my rear into gear to make some Mando customs/vehicles/dioramas... etc...
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mando%27a
There's a link to some Mando'a words/phrases.. learn it.. I'll be quizzing you all in a couple months...
-Aliit ori'shya tal'din
-
PS- If you're a Halo nut, a book just came out with a collection of short stories and one is by Karen Traviss... ;)
-
my 4yo girl sings Vode An...
-
how cool is that Doc!! should record it and put on the tube lol
-
Very cool idea for a contest. I need to do a quick scan of the different chapters, but I think I have an idea already. I'll check your vid when I get home, Wraith.
-
wow this will be very cool to see all of the entries!!!
-
I am lost on this one guys. I have never read the novels so I need to look around on the wiki I guess. Hopefully I will figure something out.
-
Just make sure to keep the idea to yoursleves, NO Spoliers
I will be sure to for two reasons: One, it's the rule, but two I really want to keep it to myself.
-
i really must get her books they sound ace! but i'm knee deep in 40k heresy novels at the moment
-
Once you start these and get into them, you won't regret it. they are great
-
You know, I've been thinking about the anonymity nature of this contest. I'm all for it, don't get me wrong. But being a guy who's been making and checking out customs for a couple of years now, it's quite easy for me to see who made the custom, just by the style of photography. I myself mostly use a black piece of paper as a background and often have pictures that are a tad under exposed, darker. Others make inserts of their pics and put those in a larger pic, whereas more others have a particular background item.
So, is there a guideline or rule for the pictures? For example, I think it isn't too much trouble for anyone to place their work in front of an even coloured piece of A3 paper or something like that.
:)
Oh, and it's strictly limited to Karen's novels right? The RC game's off limits?
-
I think this is a good idea... maybe a blank white/black/gray background for your entry and not photo manipulations added(your website/blog address/logo/etc)... maybe something like that might help even the playing field and keep it from being a popularity contest(not saying that's happened here, I'm still a newbie here, but I've been around the customizing block for awhile and I've seen it happen more than once).
-
Well, we just rounded up a contest at JediDefender.com and the entries weren't anonymous. But then again, the voting was for three categories and each entry could only be voted for once. I think it worked out pretty well.
-
Well this contest is for real tangible hand made items, so there should be no digital backdrops, the contest is for a Diorama and minimum of 1 figure/vehicle elemnet added. I want this to be Spoiler free for a variety of reason,
1. Items are judged by what they are not by who they are from,
2. I don't want any build up of hype,
3. I don't want others to see any WIP and feel they may not be able to compete against it, this is for everyone to try regardless of perceived skill level
We will be offering different layers of prizes, and the main prize will be given via the vote, the others we deliberately left blank and will be reveiled later, all I will say is everyone who enters has a chance,
To this question
Oh, and it's strictly limited to Karen's novels right? The RC game's off limits?
Correct, Novel based only.
As to the white backdrops, that is an option we can add since it is early on and nothing should be completed yet.
-
Alright then, thanks for shedding some light on this, Sarge ;)
-
recon do u no when u say no digital backgrounds does that mean we cnt print wallpaper style bkgrounds for walls out
-
If you are using it in construction of your diorama it is fine, it was refering to photoing the items against a background. Any supplies used for construction is fine.
-
cheers pal ()rr
-
I recommend watching HB94's fun video on diorama building.
I have no idea about these books, but I do like the RC soundtrack, :)
-
giggles like a school girl.. wait, we can't even tease with words right? Sorry, just excited with an email I just got... fett
Okay... okay.. I'll stop.. back to the dungeon...
-
Hey, Love the Order 66 Need to read more to get more ideas , But I like this contest it makes me want to read more books of Star Wars. I also got other books to read not Just the RC Novels
-
Right now, the RC novels are the only thing you will read. Just let the newspapers, magazines, Dear John letters and what not pile up till after the contest ;D
-
Ok Ok
I will just read my next book RC novel
-

That's a cool assortment of goodies right there.. I've been meaning to ask, are your helmets made out of the softer "rubber" like plastic, or that hard stuff like, say the same as the backpack is made out of?
-

The resin is a harder material, Joe. It doesn't have much, if any, flex to it at all. It can be reshaped if heated though.
-
I can't tell you guys how much I look forard to the end of this so we can see the dioramas, I know I have been hard at work on mine for the last 4 days, I just hope I don't run out of time,
-
I really wish I had read this series much sooner, as I have a fantastic idea in mind that I'd love to take a crack at, but I do not have the time or materials necessary to get them done. I may still do it in the future though...
-
Hit me up if you need a hand with items, I read all of these multiple times and am willing to brainstorm and send over any supplies you may need if I have some laying around.
-
I'd need 4 Republic Commandos right off the bat, and then have to troll for some model trees and grass, a sizeable rock, and a female I can use for parts...
-
We can chat after our meeting on the 15th, I may have a few things, Don't tell me what your making, just tell me if you need parts, this is a no spoiler deal ;)
-
Okey dokey!
-
OK folks, Jan 1st is upon us so 1 month left, Deadline is Jan 31st at midnite ISY time, See the first post for rules and requirements

-

-
Re-read the very first post, it will give all the contest rules and information
-
I'm halfway, I guess and having loads of fun working with foamcore for the first time! And I discovered hot glue really is friggin' hot! Damn!
-
Will there be future contests? I love participating in stuff like this because I get to see everyone else's astonishing work, and I get to make something new to add to my collection. I haven't read those novels though, and don't really have the time since I'm back in school now and have to study for ACTs.
-
on the topic of future contests,
Yes, between the site sponsored contests and member run contests, I would say it is safe to assume there will almost always be something underway
-
I guess, I'm about 50% finished.
-
Man, I can't wait to see these dios! I still may make one in the future, but obviously not for this contest
-
96% done with mine.
-
I'm hoping the next contest is a little more inclusive, :)
Can't wait to see the entries.
-
I'm getting there :) This will be great, but I wouldn't mind if January 31st came later than sooner. As usual, I can't help getting all caught up in details ;D
-
Does it have to be a seen from the novels?
-
Yes, it does. Check out the first post in this thread for all of the details.
-
Just sent two separate emails containing pics of Sean's and my entry.
-
I'm sorry guys, but I won't be able to finish mine in time. It's been hell at the office, making long hours and at home I've had to attend to other things as well. This sucks, because I already got so far. I'm in the process of painting the figures. :( :-[
I will send pics of what I have by Sunday to Sarge, but as they'll probably still be official WIP shots it won't be an official entry.
Damn.
(And no, I'm not at home wasting precious customizing time in front of my pc, but I'm at the office enjoying a lunch break ;) :P )
-
Entries are starting to flow in,
Read the entrance requirements and ensure you are meeting both requirements, Dio and 1 custom
First post has all the details.
-
I'm out too... way too much going on health and custom wise... I'll still finish mine and then post it at a later date, that way I dont cut corners to get it finsihed. Can't wait to see what everyone does.
-
How many folks are near competion and are not entering because they need more more time?
I am open to extending a week or 2 if more folks will enter
-
Greetings from the office ::) Well, I did enter the competition, but like I said, won't be able to finish the race. Two more weeks would be awesome and plenty for me to finsih my dio. I'll be working on it tonight as well, after I put the kids to bed.
-
I could go for a little more time sarge
-
