OK, here's my first try at starting a new thread. Hope you like some of my stuff.
I wanted to start with PICs and WIPs of Pre-Cyborg Eng Vreker, from CloneCrazy's Shroud of Darkness PhotoNovel (shameless plug >:D )
The Shroud of Darkness
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8754.0
Special thanks to my son, Jared who commissioned and designed this Star Wars Mercenary and who unselfishly loaned it to CloneCrazy for his Shroud of Darkness opus.
Buddy, you are a budding young McQuarrie.
Also thanks to CloneCrazy and Bombadgungan of JTA. They saw all of the WIPs and gave valuable feedback.

Pre-Cyborg Eng Vreker WIPs
The head is just SAGA Obiwan with his beard shaved off and sanded down, which BTW is the same head I used for the Post-Cyborg Eng Vreker.
I painted his hair a little darker.
I was planning on shaving down his over-sized chin, but CloneCrazy liked it this way. He thought the Jay Leno look gave it a more TCW feel.
The body is a GI Joe MARS trooper. I casted the armor of a The Corp figure ($2 at Walmart) and molded it onto the body.
The shoulder armor was a challenge. I wanted the bulky look, but was unwilling to give up range of motion. I had molded the pads and solved the problem by gluing rubber from a balloon onto the shoulders and the the pads onto the rubber. This is the only image I made of the process. Sorry.
The helmet is a cast of a Hydra soldier helmet.
I fabricated the vibroblade's sheath, holster, bandolier and belt with kneadite. Straight sculpting.
The base coat is a black spray enamel, followed by a coat of silver spray paint and the the blue. I gave everything a black/brown wash to highlight all the detail.
Rather than weather it with paint, I distressed it with 300 grit sand paper and a file.
The various accessories like pouches, I molded and cast and then glued onto his bandolier and belt with Lightening Bond Glue.
The kama is just a blue neoprene glove, glued on under the belt.
I actually found a Norelco electric razor head in a parking lot and had been saving it in my greeble box. I placed a pair of rare earth magnets into the foot peg holes of the figure and opposite poles into the razor head. After a little weathering, Voila; a hoverpad. I did refine its look after I took these pics, but CloneCrazy has the pad now. I'll have to ask him to take pics of the more or less finished product.

No bounty hunter is complete without one of those forearm accessories. That's molded form the left forearm of Ironman 2's War Machine's. It's kept in place with 1 mm rare earth magnets. There are a couple of more 1 mm rare earth magnets set in the armor, in case I ever want to give him any more accessories in the future.

Very cool, I love the colors.
And I like the idea of using magnets. Now I have a new thing to try :P

Thanks Man. Here's some info and some applications.

I have larger magnets, but the smallest will easily fit in a 1/18th scale hand or the hilt of a lightsaber.
The dot in the upper left corner is one of the magnets next to a toothpick for scale.
Just one of those little things will support the weight of an entire action figure, so an accessory is no problem.
They're very easy to disguise once placed in a figure, and it's so much easier to pull off and replace an accessory with one of these than it is to use a stupid peg.
I found it impossible to keep Yoda on Kybucks saddle. He was my daughter's (then 5 year old) figure., and it was a bummer that Yoda could only stand on the saddle peg.
An REM in Yoda's butt fixed that.
Back in 2010, I had no idea how to fix TCW Padme's arm. The swivel peg had snapped off.
I managed to get a REM in both sides of the arm, and now it stays in place AND still rotates.
Unfortunately, Padme suffers from recurrent light saber amputations at play time. ;)

Thanks CC.
That's why this was the first figure I wanted to show off. I completely understand the need for the B+W pics. It's the best way to do a graphic novel flashback, but it flattens the painting detail. I'm just so proud of that hand painted Mythosaur skull. I only wish my images captured the subtle weathering too. I painted the armor in multiple layers and then distressed it with 300 grit sand paper.
Dude, what are you doing up at 5:11 am? :o
-
Great looking figure! Really nice design, sculpt and kit bashing. Some great fixes with those REM's, I need to order some of those.
-
I couldn't stand looking at the crummy face paint on my TBS Padme. This is from the JTA RDR, but my example was worse. I wish I had made a before pic. The lip paint was obviously applied too high. The lower lip had no paint at all and that point was ridiculous.
I scraped off the lip paint with an X-acto and then re-painted. I used two shades, using a lighter shade for the lower lip. For really fine details, I sharpened a toothpick and used that as my brush. I redid the left eye which was too small and extended both eyebrows.
Now that's Natalie Portman. I finally agree that it's a great face sculpt.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Review_PadmeAdmidalaTBS02.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/IMG_4601.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Natalie-natalie-portman-55549_1024_768.jpg)
The white elbow joint bothered me too. I just stained it with permanent markers. Paint chips too easily in ball joints.
Finally I extended the neck post. It was way too short on the TBS figure.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/IMG_4612-1.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Natalie-natalie-portman-55549_1024_768.jpg)

I love tweaking face painting. I hate the "pre-seizure" look that Hasbro frequently gives us. I acquired Isabeth from Sinodolls without the helmet of jetpack.
Left is the original face paint app (JTA RDR image). Right is tweaked.
Rav Bralor is not the good looking one. I get an Angelina Jolie vibe from Isabeth, now ;)
I used a sharpened tooth pick to enlarge the irises. You cant tell, but there's actually a black dot in the center of the iris.
I used the sharp edge of an X-acto to place the eye shadow in the lower, outer corners of her eyes, after I dipped the knife in a black wash.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Review_MandaloriansI09-1.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/IMG_4585.jpg)
I also added some accents to the armor with a fine wash added to all the seams and some silver dry-brushed onto the edges.
Now all I have to do is add the helmet (already casted) and a jetpack.
At some point, I'll totally customize the armor and add the same nitrile kama treatment that I gave Eng Vreker.

Very Cool! Always on the lookout for Mando stuff.

Saw these this morning and looks like they have a few more left:

Nice eye work on these. Off to share.

Loving the little details. Nice work!
-
great customs. that's a nice de-bearding of that obi wan too. well done mate. :)
-
I have been meaning to get in here and share that BS Padme fix too. Nice work there.
Off to share.

Thanks for all the encouraging words everyone. As a noobie, 'm feeling very welcome.

Great small fixes on this version of Padme and the bounty hunter!

I did this upgrade Christmas 2012 for my 9 year old daughter. Ahsoka is by far her favorite heroine. I never saw this figure anywhere in Maryland, so I had to make a trade on-line with a friend in Las Vegas. Two Gammies for one Scuba Ahsoka. You Yarders better tell my daughter a sacrifice like that that means I REALLY love her. Now, it's a good figure, but the BIG FLAW with it is, how is Ahsoka supposed to swim with static dorsiflexed ankles? I hate nankles and despite Hasbro's claims, my kids prefer 14 points of articulation too. I had to upgrade the legs, before it went under the Christmas tree.
I showed this custom off on JTA, but I'd like to show it here too. Forgive me for the rushed pics. I only had a couple of days to do this upgrade.
I removed the legs of Space Ahsoka and Scuba Ahsoka with the boil and pop method. I molded and cast the scuba leggings and knee pads and then applied them to Space Ahsoka's legs using Lightening Bond Glue.
I also cast the padding on the inner thighs with Kneadite and cut off the excess.
Once it all cured, I spray painted the legs with Krylon Fusion satin brown. Talk about a perfect color match! Pure dumb luck. Krylon Fusion is great for a nice even base coat. If you give it a day between coats and spray a joint flexed one day and extended the next, it will even hold up in a ball joint, and it has held up to rough play even since December 2012. Once that was dry, I matched the paint colors of the pads and finished it with a mix of gloss and matt Vallejo varnish. When everything was all dry, I reattached the legs.
I got it back in the blister and resealed the package with no signs of tampering. I managed to get it wrapped and under the tree in time. My daughter has no idea it wasn't supposed to come this way.

I cant leave any custom without application of rare earth magnets. There are two embedding in her belt with a matching pair in light saber hilts.
-
Very cool custom and story to go along with it, this turned out great!
-
Wow, great process here and giving up two Gammies just to get the figure? Wow, I wish you were my dad! Off to share.
that is great news about that spray paint too. Never seen one that could stand up to not having paint rub on the moving areas.
-
Great upgrade buddy!!! That really adds loads of playability to that figure!!!
-
Never seen one that could stand up to not having paint rub on the moving areas.
I just double-checked the figure to make sure I wasn't lying. I just took these images. The joints seem to be holding up better than the butt and shins. My daughter gives it a work out.
The right knee looked a little white, but I think that was dust from the plastic repair I used for the knee pads. I touched it up with a colored Sharpie permanent marker.

Sweet fix on this figure. Nice job on sealing it back up in the card for x-mas.

I can hear everyone going out to get Kyrlon SP now! Wow, that is pretty awesome.
-
I can hear everyone going out to get Kyrlon SP now! Wow, that is pretty awesome.
I'm happy to share, and thanks for all the positive feedback.
I always sand the figure as well as the ball joint with 300 grit sand paper. The directions say "For best adherence, wait 24 hours", so that's what I do for the joints. Give a light coat with all the joints in extended position and let that dry a solid day. Then, I flip it over and spray everything in the flexed position. I've done this for 3 figures so far and they're holding up.
I've noticed a lot of stores are phasing out the Krylon Fusion SP lately and are going over toRustoleum. The claim on the cans is that it will cover plastic too. There are dozens of colors, including metallic and flat camoflage colors for the Joes out there.
-
Here's a fun easy project. I made a couple of dozens of these Woklings a couple of months ago.
I started off by molding and casting Legacy Nippet. I used plastic repair medium for the casting. It sets within 20 minutes and is fully cured in 2 hour, but before cured, I cut off the arms and legs. I then reoriented them on the body by attaching them with Kneadite. Before that cured, I scraped lines in the Kneadite to simulate fur. I couldn't get the detail in the faces or the nails unitil I used jewelers glasses. After that, I had to find variations to keep it interesting.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/179dd5b1-de64-4665-8d92-38bf745a47a2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/7ec57f67-955a-4e0a-80c5-23238dedaa74.jpg)

Once I had the first standing Wokling done, I could make molds and casting of him.
Finally I got to customizing ad painting. The cowls are just very thin plastic repair material, (not unlike Aves) laid over the heads with holes cut for the ears.

Wow, now thats a cool project. Thanks for sharing the step by step with us. I have to go share this. What a cool way to get an Endor size portion of little Ewoks!
Sjefke, before this leaves me, I would also like to formally invite you onto a future podcast of Custom Action Figure News if you are game.

These babies (pun intended!) are even more awesome in person! I'm fortunate to have a couple from the Yuzzum and cannot thank him enough 0/

Great work on the Ahsoka, Your daughter is very lucky and loved little girl!
Now mine is a little jealous, but it has changed her to like more that Leia and Amidala.
What did you use for the Mando badge? I got to get one of those.
Excellent job.

Thanks Wraith9
I use it for hair too. I'll show those figures off some day.
I used a plastic repair medium from the local hardware store to cast the bodies.
I'm about to order the Aves that everyone on ISY raves about. It seems like a much better product than what I've been using.
The Green Stuff is frightfully expensive. I got 6 inches at the Warhammer store for $10 back when my son was into that. I used it like it was gold leaf.
Then I saw it on eBay. It's the same yellow and blue ribbon, only they called it Kneadite, and it was a much more reasonable 36 inches for $11 excl S+H.

Thanks NICKELTCO
I think I've made most of my customs for her. Hasbro just doesn't make enough figures for my Geekette.
Do you mean the red Mando emblem of the blue mercenary? I hand painted that with a 5 brush and a tooth pick.
To cut those way narrower than a millimeter teeth, I ran my X-acto blade down the length to separate the paint while it was still wet.
I am working with a decal program for making my own emblems. I need a better painting/image editing program and to get a fresh color cartridge.
I'd hate to waste those decal sheets with a failed experiment, and I'm trying to fit as many decals and patterns on one sheet as I can. They cost about $2 each.

Dang Tamer! I couldn't sleep, so I posted this at 2am last night. When do you sleep?
Sure, I'd love to. We can laugh about how everybody mispronounces my handle ;)
I have a pretty hectic work schedule (chaotic is more like it), so give me plenty of advance notice.
-
I would definitely do that. Right now our normal time frame is Thursday evenings around 6:15PM eastern. We are also booked into February so far so you would get plenty of advance notice. I am hoping Chad and I can work on a new schedule sometime over Thanksgiving or Christmas Break.

It's been a while since I posted anything. I've been busy working on a few projects, which aren't ready to show yet. Here are a few astromech repaints I've done over the last couple of years.
This is an R2-KT I made for a friend. Saga Legends R2-D2, of course.

Finally, here's the one I made for my daughter. She picked out the colors and specifically wanted a purple dome. She hasn't given the droid a designation yet, but we will entertain suggestions?

Thanks LS and thanks Tamer.
More ambitious stuff next time.

Thanks Tamer. Unfortunately, the kids are getting older, the games are getting better and The Clone Wars is off the air. I sure hope Rebels and Episode 7 reignite the flame.

Amen to that.

When I adapted my cyborg custom for CloneCrazy's Shroud of Darkness, I wanted to give him a villain that was armed to the teeth. Well, if there was any army builder enemy that could make a Jedi groan, it's a Destroyer Droid, and one thing I've really admired with Destroyers were their deflector shields. I wanted to fabricate a re sized version of the accessory that came with the DTF Droids to fit Eng Vreker.
There were three attempts that failed miserably. I started with a simple rubber balloon that I blew up to be a little bigger than the custom figure. I sprayed on a little mold release medium onto the balloon. That's crucial. I used EnviroTek PourOn as the medium. I mixed about 20 mls and added one drop of fluorescent blue Vallejo paint and then painted the compound onto the balloon. The first layer is a pain, because the stuff is runny, takes a good 30 minutes to begin to cure and it doesn't like to stick to rubber. When I had an even layer, I hung the balloon upside-down over my muck sink and let it cure for 24 hours. I applied about 6 successive layers to the balloon, before popping it and removing it from the clear, blue ball. I could have made it smoother, but I wanted a more wavey, fluid appearance, like the big, Gungan shields in TPM.
Clean up is rough, so be careful with spills, and you will ruin a couple of brushes in the process. It was a one shot deal each time.
Freshly applied EnviroTek PourOn.

Hanging upside down to cure.

I think armed to the teeth is actually an understatement when dealing with Vreacker ;D That man invented the phrase collateral damage!!! There are so many little details on Vreacker which make him the masterpiece he is, I feel so fortunate to be able to use him. Sjefke and I have some very exciting news for fans of Shroud coming up, along with the epic conclusion to Vreacker's story!!! So make sure to catch up on the latest episode (shameless plug!): http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8819.0 (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8819.0)

Very cool! I cant wait to see Eng with his complete arsenal strapped on.
Don't feel shy about the plugs. I've never done a PN and don't plan to start. Dioramas are enough work as it is, and a PN must require at least 40-50 dioramas.
SOD deserves the recognition.

really cool !!! I like it

That is such an awesome idea well done.

How do you delete posts?
You should see four buttons on the upper right side of each post you make. I think the third one is the remove button. Hit that and it will take your post away if you would like.

Thanks for catching and responding to m my query.
I have 2 buttons. The first is "quote" and the other is "modify". Just below those is another "modify" button, that doesn't take me away from the thread.
I don't see a "remove".
-
If its a post you make you should be able to hit the remove button there on it? Not sure why you are not seeing that. I will look into it.
In the meantime if you let me know which post you would like removed I would be glad to remove it for you.

I saw Viperskingdom selling these last year. Well, Fighter Pods are now $2.99 per four-pack and my daughter's favorite character is all over the pegs. She may never wear them, but I couldn't resist trying to make a gift for her.
Merry Christmas

Now this is just a great idea. I would sure buy a set for my daughter. I hope I am not spoiling any surprise by putting these on the front page, but figure it might be ok.
Merry Christmas Sjefke.
-
Love what can be done with these fighter pod sets. My wife ordered a set of R2 earrings of of Etsy back in the summer; she loves them and my daughter wants in on the action now too.

Dont worry. She's clueless.
She actually watched me post the pictures and didn't put two and two together. ;D
... and the idea isn't mine. The Asian sellers were selling them about a year ago. This is by far the best use for FPs that I could imagine. I found a set with Boba Fett and Carbonite Han that I plan to do too.

Gotta finally share. Here's a custom that I've been thinking about for over a year and finally started after I found the right fodder.
CANE ADISS
Two-headed Yuvernian smuggler
and
Deep, deep DEEEEP background alien in Jabba's Palace.
Here's Cane's big scene. That's his silhuoette in the background. He appears again as Han is being dragged away to the dungeon, but he's just a blur.
http://fatz.swhosts.net/ROTJ/cane.htm
Before I show him off, I'm going to bore people with the research. ;)
I started out trying to find reference images, but there was practically nothing on the net. There was one maquette made for the ILM creature shop ad that was just of a couple of serpent heads on really long necks. There was no body and never was one, only speculation. Some say he was meant to be two separate aliens, which would explain the different color skin and spots, but sJarek a.k.a. Pablo Hidalgo wrote a backstory about Cane and proclaimed him two-headed.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cane_Adiss
I personally prefered the two headed aspect. Lucas never had a problem with aliens with two assymetric heads. Look at Fode and Beed and Captain Eo's first officer.
This is the concept maquette
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/Star_Wars_Adis_Polaroid_Set_3.jpg)
These are all the reference images I could find.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/Cane_Adiss_under_construction2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/downsized_1016131344.jpg)
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/Cane_Adiss.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/cane_adiss2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/caneadisssetup22.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/scaleCane_Adiss_puppet.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/c61634de-9d89-4e96-805c-e6e1f080afd4.jpg)
So all I had to go on for a custom was pictures of his heads. In the Creature Shop photos, the heads are about the size of a human torso and the necks were really long, so I figured Cane needed a big, solid body to support them. Wookiepedia says Cane is 2.4 meters tall. Wookiepedia is wrong! I found a couple of images from which I figured out the scale. In the image below, we see all of Jabba's henchmen, except Cane, but I noticed that there are images of Cane set against the left edge of the same arch. Note the circled markings on the triple comparison photo. Cane is approximately twice as tall as Hermie Odle, who is supposed to be 2.1 meters tall. That makes Cane Adiss freaking huge!
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20complete/scale2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/scalez.jpg)
Any body for Cane is pure conjecture. Some references said Yuvernians are 'snake-like', others say 'horse-like'. I looked at some of Cane's head shots and remembered the scene in Jurassic Park when the Brontosaurus sneezed on the girl. For me, Cane had to have the body of a bronto. The backstory about Cane Adiss said he was a smuggler. Well smugglers need to be able to handle starship controls, so he needed hands. So I gave him some. How he gets in a cock pit, I'll never know, but apparently in the story, his size was an big issue.
Putting all that together, I came up with this is concept sketch for Cane Adiss.

I started Cane when I found just the right fodder, the MU comic pack with Juggernaut and Colossus and a couple of other random hinge joints I had in a box. . Thank you Target clearance. I literally chopped Juggy to pieces. I exposed his neck, and flipped his torso around because I liked the look. The legs and arms were too long, so I cut the swivel joints off his legs to shorten them and replaced Juggy's gorilla arms with Thor Movie Destroyer arms. I switched the swivel hands with the knee joint from a The Corp figure. After lengthening his waist three times, I reattached his hips at a 80 degree angle, so his legs would articulate like an elephant's.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4693.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4703.jpg)
When I was satisfied with the body's shape, I after attaching the limbs, and I sculpted on the body detail (feet, ribs, hump and limb muscles) with 2 component plastic repair. For fine hide detail, I smeared a really thin layer of Aves Fix-it Sculpt over small sections and imprinted leathery hide texture with templates I had made from the Dewback and the Reek. ISY is right. Aves is great.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/c6707f46-40be-4c28-ac22-57c6cf36d2da.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4734.jpg)
I wanted really flexible arms, so used GI Joe legs as a base and figured, what the Heck? Let's give him articulated fingers too. I took some packing wire, rolled some 2 component material as thinly as possible. When it had cured, I cut 90 degree pieces out of the palm side. I glued the fingers onto the feet of the GI Joe leg, shaped them and covered them with white nitrile using a flexible fabric glue. Nitrile is the material that hospital gloves are made of. Nitrile is a great soft goods, because it takes color from a Sharpie marker and still flexes without the colors chipping or wearing off.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4761.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/forelimb5.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4762.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4767.jpg)
My favorite parts are the necks. They have 180 degrees flexibility, but they're not made of wire. Like the hands, I also covered them with nitrile. I glued 2 inch sections of white nitrile with Locktite Flexible glue around the necks with just the right tension to achieve the wrinkled look. I had to work in small sections because the glue dries so fast. That job took me 6 hours.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/IMG_4779.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Cane%20Adiss/81942f80-c054-4dbd-9ddb-e5eedf34d0b4.jpg)
The tail was a so-so success. I wanted to retain shape without sacrificing flexibility, so I used yellow silicon molding material. Setting and shaping it right on the tail mechanism, I etched the texture in with leather templates. For the record people, silicon does not take color. Sharpie marker ink will stick, but not well, but I eventually got some good pattern into the contours.
Of everything, the heads took the most work. That was pure sculpt work. The eyes are actually blue, glass pin heads, and the teeth are the pin points glued into holes in the jaw. Can you see the tongue? To get the fine folds effect, I smeared a very thin layer of Aves on small sections and pressed on creased aluminum foil. When that cured, and the foil was removed, it looked like fine wrinkles.

Did I not say I was going to bore you first? At my pace, Cane was a three month project, so I'm gonna milk this presentation. ;D
I love watching other guys' process, so I want to show some WIPs too. 8)
Not to mention that Photo Bucket is giving me a heck of a time tonight.
Painting process next.
-
What a great step by step process. Going to the front page.
Looking forward to seeing how this turned out.
-
Painting this custom was a challenge. I had used 3 different materials, all of which had different properties. The Aves takes Vallejo like a dream, but the nitrile in the necks is very flexible. Any paint flakes, wears and chips off when you touch it. The silicon in the tail was worse than that. That stuff wont take any color without a fight.
I had already sanded and cleaned all the plastic parts, especially the joints. I started with a base coat of Rustoleum satin yellow spray paint for plastic from the Home Depot. I've found that's the best stuff for ball joints, as long as it's a thin layer.
I used yellow fabric paint on the nitrile. Once that had dried, it would take a wash of Vallejo latex.
That tail was a bear, but I eventually tamed it. Everything beads up on it except Sharpie permanent marker, and unfortunately, Sharpie doesn't allow for subtle shading I used a brown Sharpie in the creases and wiped off the extra with alcohol. Eventually, the alcohol and Sharpie ink must have left a paint-friendly layer on top, because it was suddenly able to take some latex.
Once everything was a homogeneous base coat of yellow, I used a combination of washes and dry-brushing to accentuate the detail on the hide. I put on the spots the most simple way I could, with more Sharpie. I tried to match the spots on the heads and the necks to the reference images as best I could. I just used my imagination for the body.

Sorry about the long intro. Here are the final images. DH
He has 27 points of articulation in the body alone, excluding the necks, hands and tail. I count double-ended swivels on ball joints as 2 POAs.
HEADS: Original sculpts. Did you see the tongue?
Head/Neck Joints: double-ended ball joints made from MU's Collossus' shoulders.
NECKS 180 degree flection in any direction. It's not done with wire, but the mechanism bends through the whole length of the neck.
FORE ARMS Made from GI Joe MARS Trooper legs.
Shoulder: ball jointed. I replaced the metal GI Joe metal hip peg with a The Corp shoulder ball joint.
forearms: improvised swivel joint with a small nail head.
elbows: double hinge joint.
wrists: ball joint.
FORE LEG
shoulder: swivel shoulder joint from MU Thor movie's Destroyer.
elbow: ball joint. Also the Destroyer's elbow.
ankle: Swivel joint from The Corp soldier's knee.
WAIST: Double ball jointed waist from MU Juggernaut. (adapted to increase range of motion)
REAR LEGS All from MU's Juggy with the swivel joints removed to shorten the legs by about 1/2 inch total.
Hips: ball pegs
Knees: double hinged knees.
Ankles: ball joints.
HANDS: 14 points of wire articulation in each. Original sculpts.
TAIL: Original sculpt. About 30 degrees of flection in the tail, with the same mechanism as the necks with poorer range of motion. The silicon material is a lot stiffer than I anticipated.
OTHER FEATURES:
Blue glass eyes taken from pin heads.
Teeth made from metal pin points. Funny how that works.
Human hair (Thank you, Geekette, my daughter)
ACCESSORIES:
The gun is left over from a POTF figure. I sculpted an extension on the handle to fit Cane better.
The harness is from TFU Rancor, cut up and heavily tweaked. I sculpted the buckle and holster.
The gauntlet is molded from the forearm of a 6 inch Halo Spartan.
The pouch under his chest is molded from one on the Dewback's saddle.

Dumb question - where did you get the reference photo for Cane's full body"
Thanks Darth Crassus. This was my inspriation.
Just kidding, but at one point, I did consider making him two separate symbiotic aliens. I saw thie giraffe image and thought, "Naaah".
Hardly a dumb question. I spent a good long time trying to find the answer to that, myself. If you don't fall asleep easily, I left my dissertation at the top of page 5. :-X There are no reference images for a Yuvernian body. The various Star-Wars-pedias have different ideas. Some say he's 'snake-like', other say 'horse-like'. 7 I actually prefer Yoda-pedia, the Dutch Wookiepedia for Star Wars references. There are a few sketches done over the years, but nothing is canon as far as I know. Star Wars Blogs had a discussion about Cane's body during the summer, and concluded that there is no official Yuvernian body.
I just knew the body had to be massive to support those two 3 - 4 foot heads on 10+ foot necks. As far as form, I just used my imagination.

Here's my very first scratch custom, somewhere in 2009. Yeah, yeah, another custom for my daughter. She wanted a lady Boba Fett, because her brother had Boba and Jango already. Hey, Mandalorians are cool.
I could have save myself hours of time by getting an EE Mandolorian Elite set, but those were running $40. $40 for action figures!. That's crazy talk!
I saw the Plourr Ilo comic packs on sale for a ridiculous $6 and thought, what the heck. I'll make one. How hard could it be? :-X
Well, I filed her down and cut the arms and legs with an X-acto blade, untill the flight suit was gone and she had a more feminine shape. I molded the armor with of all things hot glue ( :o Holy McGiver ! ) and cast it directly onto her chest with green stuff. Hey. It worked.

But to give Genna Fett an edge over the bigger, tougher Mandos, I gave her a pair of original weapons.
First, PLASMA SHURIKANS ! Held in place with tiny 1mm rare earth magnets.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Genna%20Fett/4d9eaa2b-8f1b-419f-a6a6-cf5e31eac1e1.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Genna%20Fett/DSCN0153.jpg)
Next, I gave her a Ferengi weapon; the ELECTRO-WHIP !
I took Darth Malevil's electro-whip, casted it and inserted thin packing wire. When it was set, I took plain old silicon sealer and mixed in a drop of fluorescent yellow paint. I also made an un-ignited hilt, which can hang from her belt also with rare earth magnets.
If you try this, start your application at the tip of the whip. If you start at the hilt, you wont have anything to hold when you've got 5 inches of dangling, sticky silicon.

Wow, that is awesome. Love the accessories this one has. I bet your daughter was happy.
Off to share.

OK your Cane Adiss is the best version I have seen. I loved the WIP rundown you gave us as well as sharing the info you put together. I have wanted to make this alien for years! I never made him because I could not decide what to do with his body. I had decided I liked the short snake like body idea but after reading your process and seeing the completed work, I like yours the best now. There were a lot of "large fellows" in the Palace so I can see how this could work now. The build is just spectacular! You have really gone all out and used many materials to achieve your final goal. So glad the paint came together in the end on all of those different surfaces. Did you tape off the silicone parts when you spray painted? If not what was the reaction? Thanks for sharing the detailed information I really loved seeing ths one come together! Excellent work.

Thanks so much Sprywalker
I was afraid I had overdone it with the WIP process.
The body could look like anything, but I stand by my opinion that he has to be big. I found inspiration from several prehistoric mammals from the Smithsonian and the tail was from a flying squirrel that my cat presented to me one night.
I'd love to see other customizers' interpretation of Cane, done as the big 2-headed snake or two symbiotic aliens, like I-AM-BOBA-FETT's version.
Yes, I taped off the nitrile necks and the tail, but the tail didn't need it. That stuff is as impervious as Superman's baby blanket. The tiny amount of spray-over flaked right off. In the end, the paint stuck, and I could blend ithe butt and the tail base. I attribute the change in the silicon (unsubstantiated guess) to the Sharpie ink and alcohol putting on some sort of layer that would at least take some washes of Vallejo. Aves seems to stick to silicon well. I smeared that over about 8 mm of the base of the tail and there's no seem visible. I don't know if I'd recommend the silicon as a custom material. It's hard to work with, and it doesn't flex nearly as well as I'd hoped. Before the silicon, the tail tip could point completely forward.
Likewise, the spray paint easily scraped off the glass eyes.

cool casting technique on that mando chick. I love the electro whip!

Thanks and beginner's luck for that technique. Hot glue makes a nice stiff mold, but as the name implies, it's a ***** to get it off the figure.

As I said on yakface before, I love your Cane Adiss custom, its one of my most wanted characters. Any plans to cast the heads and sell them?

Thanks Darth Sidious. I'm really proud of him.
I've got to try to mold those heads. I'm not a seller, but I'm willing to trade or sell at cost.
Would you be cool with a head cast? I can talk you through making the necks. If you're up to the challenge, I realized that those Hobbit Movie Warg figures would make a pretty good Cane body.
Be patient, because I'm terribly slow. I owe CloneCrazy a couple of commissions for a while now.

I haven't posted anything in a while, but I have a few things in the works. Here's an idea for you guys who make and sell head casts. A couple of guys on JTA were lamenting that they never found TLC Slave Leia figures and couldn't afford the aftermarket prices just to get the base. I luckily had already started experimenting with casting and had a couple of samples ready to go.

The one on the left is the original. I think I matched the color of the cloth and the boots better than Hasbro did.

I have been wondering what you have been up to. I agree that base is one hard to find item and you have created a version that looks better than the original to me. Off to share.

haha, I just happened to be online at the same time. You nailed the likeness, so I'm sure that I'm not the only one that would like the casts. I have no time to sculpt, so I'll gladly incorporate your work with mine, you did an awesome job!

Probably everyone has done a Black Aurra Sing. I made this one a couple of years ago for my daughter (recurrent theme?), but I recently updated it. I dont think anyone was happy with that big white plastic antennae on her head, so I finally did something about it. Everyone has pins, right? All I did was cut off the existing plastic, shove the pin in its place and cut off the pin head. It's not quite as child-safe, but my kids have outgrown the action figures. .... at least playing with them. They both expressed interest in making their own customs!
Hey, CustomsForTheKid. Any pointers on making the family customizing business work?

Hanzo, I'm loving your stuff.

I just finished a commission from a friend to whom I owed a favor. He asked for a super-articulated Season 5 TCW Barriss Offee.
Just like with Scuba Ahsoka, I started with the lower body from Space Ahsoka There almost the same size as Barriss', but Ahsoka is a little more spritely, so I widened her hips with Aves Sculpt. I flattened out the shape of Ahsoka's boots and carved in Barriss' boots.
The elbows were a challenge. I found a couple of 2 inch human figures from the MechTech Transformer line which had really 6 small ball joints. I popped off the knees and inserted them in Barriss' elbows. As small as they wee, I still had to sand them down a lot.
I knew there was no way I could reproduce those facial tattoos, so I ordered an extra figure from Asia, while the prices were still < $10. I took TCW Barriss' head and carved off her hood. The hood is still intact BTW. I took Green Stuff and sculpted on four layers of hair, letting each layer cure before starting the next. When the shape was about right, I carved out the individual locks. Then I sculpted on the head cover with Aves.
I've always considered the faces of TCW figures too bland, so I wanted Barriss to have some attitude. I carved a small frown in the corners of her mouth and filled it in with a fine point brown Sharpie. I consider Barriss' eyes perfect, so I just sculpted on thickened lower eye lids. I got lucky and found Vallejo Game Color, desert yellow. It's a perfect match for Barriss' skin color. I sanded down the original eyebrows and re-drew them as angry as I could. Finally, I just covered over any mistakes with green paint.

Thanks Man.
I scored as many of those Brain Invader Ahsokas at the discount retailers as I could, for that very reason, to be fodder for jobs that require tiny ball joints. I also stocked up on the Hobbit's Gollum and as many cheap MechTech Transformer humans as I could. Those are the smallest ball joints out there.

The head sculpt work on this is fantastic. The hair alone is awesome. Off to share.

Hey ISY. Sorry I haven't posted my Wam here yet, but I've been away with the Boy Scouts for 10 days.
I'm presenting Wam "Blam" Lufba. He's been my avatar over on JTA since I started blogging there. I've had the rough sculpt for almost a year and finally got around to finishing him.
The base figure was a Megablocks Halo Brute figure, which stands about two inches tall. The joints of those figures are all either very small hinge joints or ball peg joints. I cut off the knee and elbow hinges and extended them with coffee stirring rods reinforced with tooth picks, using Lightening Bond Glue and Fill. I sawed out two ball pegs from another figure glued them onto the legs to use as the ankles. I wanted ball peg joints on the wrists too and found that really good metal pins with rounded heads work great as ball pegs. I built up the limbs with Aves Apoxie Fixit Sculpt and then shaped them with a file and sand paper.
I scavenged the fur off a $1 Beanie Baby. It's glued to the body with Loctite Flexible Glue. I was careless (http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/konfus/p030.gif) (http://www.cosgan.de/smilie.php) and killed the waist articulation with the glue. Otherwise he would have had 16 POAs. To get the right color, I added highlights with a fabric marker.
Wam has 15 points of articulation.
Head: Original sculpt over a Brute head.
Antennae: Packing wire, cut to length and topped with a little GreenStuff for shape.
Neck: I sawed off the ball peg neck from the Brute and glued it lower on his chest.
Body: Brute body extended with about 8 mm with Aves.
Arms and legs: Stirring rods reinforced with tooth picks and glued to the hinge joints of the Brute with Lightening Bond cyanoacrylate glue.
Upper arm: Swivel joint made out of a flat pin head.
Wrist: Metal pin heads.
Hands: From Marvel Universe Longshot figure. The right hand was balled in a typical superhero fist, so I had to cut the thumb and fingers free and the sculpt on the distal finger tips and shape the nails.
Ankles: Ball pegs.
Feet: Original sculpt.

Czerka Arms U-84 Hunting Rifle:
I tried to be as faithful to the gun's details as the few grainy reference photos allowed.
Stock: Carved from a popcicle stick,
Barrel: Plastic tooth pick.
Sights: Parts from a Saga Legends foot locker rifle and a metal pin.
Trigger and other details: Molded from other plastic rifles and weapons.
Strap: Nitrile glove material cut to 3 mm wide and 4 inches long.
The gun was a scratch build. The stock was carved from a popcicle stick. The barrel was mostly a plastic tooth pick with another rifle barrel glued to the end. The sight is part of another gun, and the long, narrow part is a part of a metal needle. The detail pieces are various odds and ends that I carved off of other old greebles. The strap is a strip of a nitrile glove colored black. It's attached to two metal staples that are bent into buckle shapes. One is glued to the stock. The other is wrapped around the barrel so it rotates freely. The detail is too small to see with my camera, unfortunately.

You've got some great work here. Love this scratch built stuff, just amazing!
I left you some links for those ball joints in my thread. Check em' out. I'd like to get with Jrny Fan since he just bought a 3D printer and see if he can re-produce the Hasbro joints. If done correctly one could get a set that could do an entire figure.
-
This is probably one of the single best scratch-built... no, strike that, one of the single best figures I have ever seen in my life! This is beyond amazing work! If I could slap this on the front page myself, I would.

You do not fail to impress. this is INCREDIBLE.

BTW, my son is trying his hand at customizing now too.

Hey, CustomsForTheKid. Any pointers on making the family customizing business work?
Well Elias is really the driving force here at home. I've asked to retire more times than I can remember.
Starting them off with No Paint Kit Bashes and slowly introducing new techniques as they master what they've learned so far is really beneficial to keeping them excited about the hobby. Slow progress makes it's easier for them to produce a quality piece.
The blog was very helpful too. Seeing visits from the blog going from 50 hits a month when we first started to 12,000 hits last month really made Elias feel like people were interested in what he was doing.
Customizing brought us so much closer these last few years and because customs take so long it adds up to a lot of quality time as a family :)

Greetings Yarders. It's been a while since I've posted something here.
I'm showing off my Laudica. She was Correlian gun runner and marksman. In ROTJ, she was the female leering down at poor Oola in the pit and standing behind Bousch during the thermal detonator scene.

I started with Ysanne Isaard as the base figure. The choice was a no brainer for me, because they both have red outfits. I hate the prep work for ball joints.
First, I removed the skirt, and cut off the detail like the rank insignia and sleeves. The belt is from TCW Padme. For the face detail, I scraped the original paint off Isaard's face and did a repaint. Lastly, I added GreenStuff/Kneadite to her head to sculpt on the hair. The necklace is loose and made of string and aluminum foil. I couldn't see good detail in the reference image, so I used the concept image Yakface's localgotal as a guide.

Thanks for the link! I haven't actually watched Return of the Ewok in a while.. iirc the version I saw was the same one but on YouTube, cobbled together from surviving VHS tapes and film hence the reason the sizes of the frames change during the same shots sometimes.
As for my drawings eh... I have a few from my highschool/college days at my deviant art page... http://www.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=Rezikai-the-ghost (http://www.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=Rezikai-the-ghost) in the last couple years I went deeper into manga and anime so I draw Star Wars Manga style now and make my own fictional stories since the EU was considered mostly non-canon now.
By the way if you ever make Jess you HAVE TO PUT THEM TOGETHER for at least a few shots....lol

You should really post those sketches here on ISY. Your Vader and Boba are excellent. Also, I have no objection to Manga style SW.
What a great Jabba's Palace Dio Sjefke could make!
Tamer
That Jabba's Palace dio is exactly my long term plan ..... and I wouldn't rule out a Sail Barge dio either.
Of course, I probably wont find the time until I retire.
-
I'd love to see a palace diorama or even a group shot with all your awesome customs as well.
-
JESS
Jess is a Human female dancer in Jabba's palace, who hung close to Bib Fortuna.
Draw your own conclusions but Lucas apparently deleted a scene with the pair, because it was a little too racy for the kiddies.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jess
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Jess/imgres.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/download.jpg)
I started with slave Leia as a base (Thank you Viperskingdom for the affordable fodder) .
IMO, Slave Leia's legs are way too short compared to her upper body, which is otherwise perfect.
I lengthened both upper and lower legs by about 5 mm with Magnum Plastic repair. I also shortened
the waist peg, since I wouldn't be needing the space for burgundy fabric. The actress who played Jess
was obviously athletic, but didn'tt have the tiny waist that slave Leia does, so I straightened her curves a bit.
Next, took her torso and filed down the gold bikini top. To make a new bronze bikini top, I laid thin copper wire
from a telephone line and glued the outline of Jess'to her chest with Lightening bond glue with accelerants.
I put down a layer of GreenStuff/Kneadite inside the borders of the wire, and after that had cured, I laid down more
Greenstuff for added detail with an X-acto blade. Finally I painted it bronze and gave it a black wash.
A lot of the detail is improvised since the reference images are so grainy.

When it came to the Arabian style pants, I had two options. First sculpt them and add in big ball joints knees,
which would ruin the seamlessness or else make flexible pants. I cut squares of blue, nitrile gloves material,
rolled them around big pencils and glued them with Loctite Flexible fabric glue to make conical tubes.
I slipped the tubes over each leg and glued them together in the front and back and onto a crotch piece.
Those Arabian slave pants are completely loose from her legs, and I think they look like real fabric at this scale.
Next time, I may use latex in stead of nitrile. Originally, it was very tight and flattered her butt.
Unfortunately, the material stretched out over a couple of days. The last time I used nitrile material was for the necks of Cane Adiss.
I'll let everyone know if the nitrile ever starts to crack or let loose.

Finally, I took the head from Marvel Universe X-23 and scraped off her mask, and in the facial features.
I laid down successive layers of GreenStuff and sculpted locks of hair by pulling grooves with a scalpel.
I gave it a base coat of gloss white, painted in blue locks, gave it a wash of thin blue and then a wash of metal medium.
I covered it with a gloss varnish and finally put dark blue highlights with a colored marker. [Vallejo paints]

Very nice. It's amazing, those gloves did the trick nicely. If you wouldn't have said what they were I would have thought they were cloth... amazing!
Love the tutorial too. I like to do those as well. I always feel we can all learn something from each other. I have a handful of those Slave Leia figures. I have plans for each one. I felt there was something odd about the height too and was going to lengthen her somehow, but when I stood her next to the male figure who will be her counterpart she didn't look bad anymore so I decided against it.
Again great job on fleshing out Jabba's entourage.

One more, Jabba's Angels style.

Jess and Laudica together again. Awesome job man.

Jess looks fantastic. Such a great job lengthening the legs and those pants. That fabric looks tops. I can see where you glued it together! On the front page.

Thanks Tamer.
How's your little girl doing?

Doing fine I am happy to say. Thanks for asking.

Loved seeing the details on how you reworked Leia to create Jess. Great stuff!

Thanks Smeagol. I hadn't noticed. My OCD made me sit and watch the scene frame by frame to catch it. It was like ONE frame. ::)

Hey Yarders
I've been busy with a few projects and commissions which I haven't finished yet. I think I was in a rut because my last two customs were females and I in the process of making 5 other female customs. I needed something with testosterone quick, so here's a simple touch-up.
Can you believe I haven't opened my TVC Kithaba yet? I only have the brown bandanna version, so of course in the interest of screen accuracy, I had to tweak my opener. Once I got started, I couldn't stop. Kithaba is a great figure, but Hasbro left him so bland, and the mismatched joint colors of didn't help.
Here's what I did.
1. Painted the bandanna red. (Duh!)
2. Detail painted the face. I got a nice vein on his forehead, that I couldn't capture on the camera.
I painted the gums a nasty grey, pink, and separated the teeth,
3. Dremelled down the ball joints, dabbed on primer and paint and put on a teeny, tiny application of acro-cyanate glue as a sealer.
So far it's holding nicely.
4. Weathered the leather pouches, belts and boots.
5. Added shadowing.
6. Detailed the monotone pistol and staff.

Hello Yarders!
Usually, I don't show my WIPs until I have a finished project, but I've made an exception. This custom has no character in canon nor EU. It was inspired by a few sketches of female Wookiees that I saw a few years ago and I thought how neat a custom that would that be. I had scored a Marvel Universe She-Hulk, figured that would be the right base figure and went to town with some greenstuff. I actually started her about two years age, got distracted by other things and put her away. I rediscovered her recently and tried to get her ready for the bounty hunter challenge, which has been over for .......
Thanks to Peakob on this one for some sculpting advise.

I just finished the body two days ago and have a base coat on her. Accessories are also almost done.
I'm not sure if I should partially cloth her or just leave her au natural.
I'm open to suggestions Yarders.
Back with an update soon.
Thanks

Great sculpting work. That is some of the best hair simulating I've seen. Excellent!
I vote clothed but the fabric doesn't look right. I'd go for a leathery hide or maybe even reptilian as her coverings.

Hello! :o
I wasn't expecting the banner, but ....... cool! 8)
Figured I'd get these posted, so the Yarders could see my painted Wookiee gal, before the podcast. She looks a little less like the Jolly Green Wookiee, Hirsute She-Hulk now. Tamer, I do like your nickname 'Wookiee Gal', but we've named her, Hachaa. The base figure is the 3.75 scale Marvel Universe She-Hulk. I've got some WIPs that I'll show later.
Coincidentally, I just found this image today. Check out the female Wookiee figure we could have had.
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/323485185708875894/
I'm still working on some last minute touch-ups, her accessories, weapons and softgoods.
I vote clothed but the fabric doesn't look right. I'd go for a leathery hide or maybe even reptilian as her coverings.
I'm taking DS's & Starchaser's advice about the soft goods. I think I know how to pull off the reptilian hide.

Wow, give me your sculpting of Wookie Fur any day over Hasbro's. Looks phenomenal. I guess we will have to put this on the front page soon along with the video embed for the podcast.

I haven't gotten to sit down and watch the show yet. It's on the High Priority list for this weekend. I was in New Orleans last night watching a Jazz band and eating fried shrimp... that's the only excuse I got.
That Wookie female is looking freakin' great!

I liked the podcast better this time out as we just focused on the work and it wasn't so much video the the people talking. Nothing wrong with that, but I think folks like seeing the custom work better than my ugly mug.
Update on the fp by the way Jeff! She looks fantastic.

Hey Yarders.
You've already seen some head shots of my Bastila Shan. Here's more work. We're down to the wire again so I have to hustle. I'm not sure I'll have her done in time, so I'm posting the WIPs in my thread, rather than the Birthday thread.
When I opened my TBS Bastila Shan, I was appalled by the horrible paint job and thought I'd just do a little touch up on the face. Then, I got annoyed by the hair style of the game rendering and altered it to look more like some of the images I had seen on DevianArt. By the time I had gotten that far, I figured I'd just redo the whole thing and ultra-articulate Bastila.
I started by fixing that shoddy TBS face paint. I scraped the extraneous white paint from around her eyes and those horrible Joan Crawford eyebrows with an xacto blade. Once the canvas was clean, I could see the Hasbro sculpt was amazing. I repainted the whites, staying within the sculpt line. I used a toothpick tip as my pupil applicator. That allows me to put a round drop of dark blue in the center. I followed that with a second drop of lighter blue on top of the dark, before applying a drop of black on top of the iris. Once I liked what I had I gave the eyes a layer of glossy varnish.
The next step was the eyeliner. I thinned out some black paint, and dipped in an xacto blade, then I traced around the edges of the eyes. The varnish helps the black paint stay in the creases.
I used a fine tip brown Sharpie marker for the eyebrows. To give her face more life, I repainted it with Valejo salmon, but I blended in a little scarlet on the cheeks. Taking a fine brush, I traced around the eyes and eyebrows. That helped get the lines straighter and thinner.
The hair was fun. I laid down some GreenStuff on her forehead. Using my xacto, I pulled grooves down along her facelines down to her neck. Once that had cured, I took some more Greenstuff and tweezed it into long thin strips and attached one end to her new hair and shaped them into the loose locks of hair seen in the reference photos.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/4dcb2df5-945b-4170-9933-b3e663cc9221.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/5c60b7a7-6291-4dea-8c2b-e483efa1fd72.jpg)
To add more articulation, I used GI Joe Retaliation Lady Jaye for the legs and torso ball joint. She's much bigger than Bastila, so I had to file LJ down by A LOT. By the time I had the size right, I could literally see light shining through the plastic in some parts. I also shortened her legs by 1/8 inch in the thighs and calves. I figured as long as I'm cutting the legs in multiple places, I may as well add swivel joints in the upper thighs and ankles for added range of motion. I forgot to take pics of the ankle WIPs, but here's a schematic. I used small brad nails for swivel joints. I did the same thing with my Cane Adiss' arms, but those were larger and easier to work with.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/upperlegswivel.jpg[img]%20%20%20%20[img]http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/upperlegswivel2.jpg)
The skirt and belt were a tight fit over the hips and butt. Once on, it seriously limited the forward range of motion of the legs, so I cut off some of the plastic pieces from the front of the skirt and glued on flexible neoprene rubber in its place. I colored the neoprene with a brown Sharpie and even up close it's hard to tell it's a different material.
After reconstructing the legs, I spread a thin layer of green stuff over the legs and added texture with a latex template I made from BS's legs. The greenstuff is loose and extends over the swivel joints, hiding them.
One of the few original parts I used was TBS Bastila's torso. I hollowed it out to fit the bare bones Lady Jaye torso joint. I is a really tight fit. In hindsight, I should have used the ball peg joint from TCW Aurra Sing and hollowed out the LJ abdomen instead of the BS torso.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/hollowedouttorsojpg2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/hollowedouttorso.jpg)
Here's what it looks like together. It's a little hard to see because of the hodgepodge of colors.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/9.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/bastilla%20shan/4.jpg)
I filed down the legs as thin as I dared and then put a very thin layer of greenstuff over them and added texture from a template made from the BS figure. The green stuff covers the swivels so you don't see the joints I think they call that a collette.
At this point I was advised by guys with really sharp eyes that the legs look too 'Manga'. That's was a lot of work to re-do, but I do have OCD. I stripped down the GS coating, filed the legs down even thinner, shortened the thighs AGAIN by at least 3/16ths inch and reapplied the GS layer and re-textured it. Phew! I have to say, it was worth the effort.
I've also carved the shoulder armor from the arms and attached them directly to the torso with neoprene rubber. Now, she can raise her arms up without having the shoulder pads in her armpits.
I also carved a ball peg from a Megablock Halo figure ang glued it to the bottom of B.S.'s neck. I hollowed out her collar to fit it. This really improved the head's range of motion (ROM). To avoid the pony tail hindering movement, I replaced the pony tail berret with packing wire wrapped with thin copper wire. It's flexible and doesn't hinder the ROM of the double ball peg neck. I count both those fixes as two more POAs.
After squeezing the skirt as low on her hips as I could get it, I glued it in place. I also managed to fit the hollow torso onto the ball joint mechanism in the Lady Jaye abdomen. I cut the abdomen armor detail off of the original Bastila Shan figure and glued it over the belt. The back armor wasn't worth salvaging since it was an easy sculpt with greenstuff.
You know all that subtle detail on the Bastila Shan boots? I replicated the detailing onto the LJ boots with green stuff too. I'll try to make the pics higher res next time too.

Thanks Yarders. More soon.

Love the step by step, and how it's Bastila! Can't wait to see the final reveal, if only Hasbro would make such works of art once more. An ultimate Revan would be a cool project as much as I would hate to see one cut up, but think of how cool it would be next to your ultimate Bastila!

Thanks Mandaolre25
I tried to cast the details I needed from the original, in order to leave her intact, but my casting skills need work. It took a lot of nerve to start slicing a figure that's going for $25 on the aftermarket. Thankfully, I have a friend with an extra BS, in case I need a backup.
I'd love to do a Revan too, but those figures are way out of my budget. I have too many projects on the back-burner to start sculpting an original head. If you now someone selling head casts, please let me know.
-
A seller called stevek8764 on ebay sells them from time to time. He sells his slightly defective heads and, has a group of them listed frequently, but a Revan head isn't always in the lot. I have Revan, and can also see about making you a head. No promises about that because none of my molds have turned out yet, I'm very new to making them.

Great looking female Wookie! Very nice sculpt work on that fur. Bastila Is shaping up nicely and man is she super articulated!

Thanks, Man
I still have to finish BS off. I tried to assemble her yesterday and pretty much ruined a lot of detail work. I spent a couple of hours fixing up the mess today. All I have of the diorama is the frame work. It wont be anywhere near as elaborate as your kata.
The Wookiee has been sitting in a bag waiting foe me to finish her accessories and soft goods. Her long rifle is gonna knock your clone booties off.
No problem. Plenty of time to work in the shop between work, driving to the in-laws for Thanksgiving and driving back. What? Me worry?
-
Here are a few more steps in the construction.
I'd prefer ball joints for wrists but that usually looks pretty klunky. The next best thing are ball pegs made from metal pin heads. You need the old fashioned kinds. What you find in Joanne's craft store are too flimsy, so you may have to plunder Grandma's sewing kit.
I did some final prep work on the abdomen. After several unsuccessful attempts to cast the abdominal armor, I just carved it off of TBS Bastila and glued it onto GI Joe Retaliation Lady Jay's abdomen. I was just a fraction too short, so I sculpted an extension with greenstuff. It's a little crude, but mostly hidden under her torso anyway.
Has anyone noticed that when you raise B.S.'s arms above her shoulders, the shoulder pads are in her arm pits and am I the only one who thinks that looks just wrong? I applaud how Hasbro engineered the shoulder armor to slide under the shoulders, but I preferred to see the armor loose and attached to the torso. I carved the armor pieces from the shoulders and shaved them as thin as I could, then I attached them to the torso with brown neoprene rubber using Locktite Flexible glue. It's tricky keeping a little tension on the rubber while gluing the armor on. I cant tell you how many times I messed this up before it didn't look terrible.

Final images up next. Hope nobody minds that I repost from the Ultimate Action Figure Contest.

This is such an incredibly cool custom. I'm completely blown away by how rad this is!

Great work. Appreciate the step by step process. I'm more of a vehicle guy but I'd like to start dabbling a little in figures.

Your Bastila Shan figure is Awesome!
Love, love, love the painting done on her face. She is beautiful!
The super poseability you gave her is spectacular! DH

Hey Yarders.
This one is a bit of departure for me. A JTA buddy of mine lives in Ohio and was interested in a custom Stormie.
Apparently, there's a guy in Cincinatti who loves his Bengals and his Star Wars.
The result was a Mash-up mascot, the Bengal Trooper.
I tried to talk him into a 6 inch Stormie, but he insisted on a 12 inch figure ... with 5POA. (http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/e158.gif) (http://www.cosgan.de/smilie.php)
;) You're my bud, PaulB, so here you are.
After some masking tape over the eyes and blue stripes of the helmets jowls (the Bengal Trooper did the same thing), I spray painted with Fusion orange. Then I free handed the other black details. I made a copy of the B for Bengals logo and pinned thru the paper onto his chest. Then I free hand painted over the little dots. I finished up with a clear coat after some touching up.

Has anyone on ISY customized a shampoo bottle yet?
This mash-up stuff seems like the best use of these figures to me. As a matter of fact, when those big Rebels vehicles go on sale, I'm gonna go to town.

Niiiiiice
I'm more of a Browns fan but the Cincitrooper is kewl to. There used to be a guy in NewOrleans who wore his Saint color-schemed Jangofett/mandolorian gear to each Saints game up until a year or so ago when he passed of cancer.

Glad to see Football and Starwars still has someone carrying the torch.

Wow, what a great thing to do for a friend. I like it. Off to share.

Not a sports guy myself, but your a good guy. props. :)

I just googled Ohio State football stormtroopers and saw this guys blog it has the bengal trooper in it to...lol
http://delusionsofgrandeur-jaiy.blogspot.com/2011/12/stormtroopers-of-earth.html
However Google's showing TONS of custom Football team stormtroopers from Tenn. to Pittsburgh Steelers to my very own Ohio State Buckeyes!, customs of some of these sometime would be awesome... but probably a little pricey unless commisioned however.. as Ohio State just won the National Title ... i'm sure it'd sell...
hell the local dispatch's paper in columbus were going for $300-$400 a paper if you could find one...lol

OMG! I haven't posted anything new in 6 months. I haven't been idle but real life has been in the way of customizing. Not all of it was work. 8, and I have managed to finish a few projects, finally. I regret my challenge vehicle is nowhere near ready for showing.
Here's a WIP on a side project I started while on vacation. I picked up a POTF2 Yakface on eBay. The original figure lacks detail, but the form of the head is pretty good. It's mostly hidden below the overstated whiskers. Well I gave him a shave and whittled in some detail. When I got home, I did some dremeling, sanding and some cautious painting.
I like how this is turning out. Since I haven't posted anything in so long, I thought I'd share some WIPs. Of course he'll have an SA body and some more supple whiskers eventually.

More WIPs are coming as well as a few finished projects.
Thanks Yarders
Have fun at Comic Con if you're lucky (crazy) enough to be there.
Pray for SA 3.75.

Its about time you got back in here! That Yak head looks fantastic. Off to share.

Off to a great start ! look forward to more updates!

That's going to be fantastic!

Can't wait for update on this, looking amazing!

Thanks Stan, AJ, MJ1977 and Tamer.
I do meed to post more stuff. I've not been idle, but I good start a thread on how not to make molds and casts. Boy, is there a learning curve on that skill. I could show you a BaD astromech that looks like he almost survived a supernova explosion.
Anyway, ill post more soon.
-
I know I can speak for us all when I say we would love to read more about molding and casting. I know there is a huge learning curve there.

Hey Yarders
I finally have something to post. DH
I recently ordered two TBS Mosep Binneed figures from NJ Toys and Collectibles (Good thing. Never saw bupkis at retail) with the idea to make three customs from the two. One I'm keeping clean (OK, with a few modification) and the other I split the head and the body.
Tawss Khaa was the other Nimbinal in Mos Eisley Spaceport, but he was also known as the original Jabba the Hutt.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/BAC58942-D257-41BE-ADA6-B875BC068CC7.jpg). (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/8AD9C17C-8F46-48BF-851B-5A9A04C17116.jpg)
To keep from destroyed a good head, I molded and casted Mosep's head.
After shaving off the original stache and pony tail and sculpting the new one with Kneadite, I tightened up the paint apps (talk about sloppy edges) and gave it a matt varnish.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/image.jpg1.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/5B3033BE-F13B-43B0-8263-577704A58611.jpg)
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/8B036104-F865-47AC-B39D-C6E7F60366E5.jpg). (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Tawss%20Khaa%20and%20Mosep%20Binneed/9D80FDF5-1810-4DA9-B540-67A32B72B4BE.jpg)
Finally, I wasn't satisfied with how limited the range of motion was on the 16 POA figure with rocker ankles, so I cut about a millimeter from the backs of his knees and elbows and split the uniform's skirt. I think I could get him to sit in a chair now.
Thanks Yarders
More to come soon.

Wow, what a great update. My comments are on the front page.
And hey if you need any more Moseps take a look at Dorkside Toys, they have em for 8 bucks:

Nicely done on the head cast ! I assume your third version will be the Mossep from ROTJ ?
-
And hey if you need any more Moseps take a look at Dorkside Toys, they have em for 8 bucks:
Thanks Tamer. I'm good on heads, but I like the $8 price tag. Dorkside is selling all of their 3.75 TBS for that price ... except for Toryn Farr for $10 ( go figure ). I still don't have a copilot for my snow speeder, so will grab Dack.
Nicely done on the head cast ! I assume your third version will be the Mossep from ROTJ ?
Absolutely, and thanks MJ1977. I've been loving all your OTC customs BTW.
-
Great look forward to your next update, and thank you kindly for the for the compliment !
-
Awesome!! Great job on the head and adding better range of motion. What good is super articulation without the range of motion?
-
Awesome!! Great job on the head and adding better range of motion. What good is super articulation without the range of motion?
I know, right. I'm thinking about trimming the knees even more.
.... and thanks, JDeck.
It's real easy to do, but with the knees it means repainting the red pants, as the lower legs are cast in black. Fortunately, I have a paint which is as close to a match as I could want. Vallejo, Game Color Scarlett Red.
-
Really amazing work. The improvements to Mosep look great and I love the new modified head for Twass. Thanks for the hints on improving the articulation as well, very helpful!

Hey Yarders
A few weeks ago, I scored a POTF2 YakFace and showed off some improvements I had made to the head.
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8772.msg185715#msg185715
I wanted to go further with the whole figure. As usual, it's a big mish-mash of parts. I'm coining the term "Franken-figure".
The body needed a complete makeover. The rubber cloak is ugly. He needs way more articulation, and the hands are oversized and cartoonish. Using just a The Corps action figure and a few spare ball joints, I got him to 14 POA.
I put a ball joint onto the wrists. The original POTF2 hands are way oversized, so I sculpted new ones over the Corps figure's hands.
There isn't much reference to go by for the lower half. Yakface is always featured from the waist up or standing behind other aliens, so I kept the custom as close to the POTF2 figure as possible using the original feet and leggings. The lower half is from the same the Corps figure. I grafted spare ball joints onto the ankles.
I wanted a lot of fine detail in the head. As insurance against a mishap, I casted a copy of the head.
After painting the detail, I covered the neck with white nitrile and glued it to the base of the head. This covered that big joint gap, but allowed full range of motion. The nitrile takes color from Sharpie marker and even holds Vallejo paint, if you don't handle it too much.
Finally, I wanted that scraggly hair. I flayed up the nose and put some slow drying glue in the gap. Then I laid individual strands of really fine nylon thread in the gap and sealed it back up. There's also strands in the back of the head and ears too.
After final assembly, I put some soft goods on. The sleeves and pants are blue nitrile glued with Loctite Flexible glue. The sleeves are attached only to the torso and the pants are attached only to the ankles. This allows full range of motion but hides the joints nicely. The tunic is artificial fur from a cat toy.
Instead on a standard cloak pattern, I had to figure out how to make a teepee style wrap, because I liked how it laid n his shoulders. That took ten tries to get right.
If anyone is interested, I did trace the pattern before gluing it together. The squares are 1/4 inch. All the seams overlap by 1/8 inch which is more than enough to hold it tight. Liquid Stitch holds well within 15 seconds and after a day, you'll tear the fabric before you can separate the seams.
That's the build. I'll post the final pics tomorrow.
Thanks ISY

What I like about this figure is that most of the articulation is hidden behind soft goods, but not inhibited by them.
I was thrilled with the whiskers. I may go back and customize Mosep Binneed's and Tawss Khaa's whiskers this way too.

Your custom Yakface figure is outstanding!

Wow This is amazing !

Amazing custom work!

Thanks I-am-Boba-Fett, MJ1977 and Ghostskulls.
I hope I didn't bore with too many details.

Holy cow man, that look super awesome!
I love how you placed his whiskers under his nose. Looks super realistic.

Amazing custom , best I ever seen! Do you do commission work?
Thank you Stan and CandyBlues.
I have done a few commissions in the past, but the last one took me almost two years to complete. It was for four figures, but that's still a long time. I hope to show those off soon.
Shoot me a PM.

Did anyone else feel jipped when Hasbro released the GotG Marvel Universe "FOUR" pack? It was basically, SA Starlord and Drax with a one piece Rocket Raccoon and a totally unsatisfying potted Groot. I never read a comic, but I really loved the GotG movie. Yes, Hasbro released some great Marvel Legends figures, but I like my SA 3.75, so I'm stepping outside the Star Wars comfort zone and starting with Groot. We'll see how far I get with the other movie Guardians.
Anyway, here are some Groot WIPs.
I used a spare Chewbacca as the base because he has the right scale and the brown joints. It's easier to work with the right color joints than to prep and color them. Joint rub is a b[ad thing].
Groot is pretty tall, even for Chewie so I extended the upper and lower arms with shims by 3/16 inch and the upper and lower legs by 1/4 inch.
I also like a lot of articulation in the head, so I casted a pair of Stormtrooper neck pegs and glued them together to look like a peanut. I did the same for my Bastila Shan. It really allows for great range of motion. The head is a new sculpt and needs a lot of work still.
I almost took the easy way out and left the legs the the way they were, perfectly good swivel hips and ball jointed ankles ..... but I had to got and go with ball joint hips and rocker ankles. I took some arms from a comic pack Juggernaut and cut up the elbows. In stead of pointing the pegs up into the waist, standard for MU figures, I sliced off the pegs and glued on nylon washers. I set the washers next to each other and used plastic repair resin to make a pelvis. That worked out, so I committed to trashing the Chewbacca pelvis and gluing on the legs to my custom one. I gotta say, the hips move smoothly this way. I did have to Dremell down the thighs to keep him from looking too hippy.

So here's my roughed out Groot. Deleted Scene Chewie is next to him for scale.
He also has ball jointed wrists from a Megablock Halo action figure. The hands are from a Thor Movie Frost Giant.
Very rough.
He'll need a lot of detailing and I think a bigger head.

Updates soon, .... as soon as I finish painting my basement, ..... before Christmas. Maybe next year. :-\
-
What a great idea. And yeah, Groot was disappointing. (While I like the comic look of MU Starlord, I would have liked a movie version of him in his duster as well). This WIP is looking really good so far, and you have put in a ton of work. I'm very impressed. I think you are right about the head, a bit bigger would look more proportionate. Keep up the good work.

I haven't put in too much work on the head yet. It's hard to judge the proper scale, when the figure is disassembled.
-
That sculpting looks great!
-
Wow, just a ton of cool work already. I can see this one is gonna turn out awesome. My daughter love GOTG too and I too thought the 3.75" Figures they released were awful. Nice work so far. I will follow this one closely. Off to share.
-
Can't wait to see more work in progress pics of your custom Groot figure. Definitely sculpt the head a bit bigger. Very cool how you added the articulation too !!!
-
Hey Yarders
BTW, thanks I-a-B-F and JD Deck.
What with the Holidays and painting my basement, I haven't had a lot of time to get to Groot, but here's some of the progress I've made. He's turning into another Franken-figure.
I wanted to start detailing, but instead made a major structural change in the middle of the build. I just didn't think Chewbacca's torso was beefy enough for Groot. Instead of expanding the Chewbacca torso and shoulders, I found a leftover MU Colossus torso and decided to encorporate that. Those MU figures have great ball jointed torsos allowing for great range of motion. After trimming the abdomen part down all the way to the ball joint drum, I thought why not combine the two articulating mechanisms. I cut the peg from Chewie's torso and mounted it on the abdominal half of the Colossus torso. It worked out nicely. Groot will have a ball jointed torso and a ball peg abdomen. Here are the WIPs with an exploded view so you can see the inside.

I added ball jointed wrists using Megablock parts. The hands are from a Thor movie Frost Giant and even those seem too small, so I'll either have to enlarge them or find small six inch hands from some other figure.
I also flipped the ankle ball joints and turned them into rocker ankles.
The new head sculpt is coming along too. Sorry for the dark brown color. That was a mistake as it kinda hides the detail.
Thanks
More progress soon.

Wow what a major work and in the middle of the project! Man, this shows some true attention to detail and articulation. I really am enjoying seeing the process for this!

Looks very promising.
Can't wait to see the finished Groot.

Hey Yarders
I hope everybody had a great holiday
Christmas is over, and the basement is painted. I finally had an afternoon to myself. I have been working on Groot, but making a Groot without Rocket is like making a Newman without Redford, a Laurel without Hardy or a C-3PO without R2.
I've done a little sculpting, but the scale is daunting. Every time I think I have it right, I'll take some pics, and it's clear that I'm way off. I hate high def close ups. They are unforgiving.
Anyway, I started on a Megablock Call of Duty figure with the ball jointed arms. I slapped some Aves of the Megablock head. I carved away what didn't look right until it looked better and then slapped on some more Aves againo until it looked a little better. Then repeat. My sculpting style reminds me of that story about how long would it take a hundred chimps typing random letters on typewriters to eventually come up with the complete works of Williams Shakespeare.
Anyway, I'm finally satisfied enough to mold this and make a few copies

Wow, doesn't that look fantastic! I am hoping he makes ton of copies of this!
Thanks Tamer
The reason I'm making copies is to make alterations on the original to avoid as much resculpting as possible. I loved Rocket's war face in the prison, and I plan to modify the casts to give both Rocket and Groot different expressions.
I did the same thing for a commission, which I'm not yet at liberty to reveal, but here's a tease. Those are all modified Depa Billaba head casts.

Yakface is not the only thing I've completed this year. I hope to show these ladies off soon..
I'll put you down for a set. I remember your daughter likes GotG.

Love the GOTG customs! You did an awesome job of capturing the spirit of the film!

Someone on our Facebook Page was asking about buying some of the racoon head sculpts!
What? No love for Groot?
I'm always flattered and a little embarrassed when someone asks to pay for one of my sculpts. I prefer to make trades (BTW Brian, how's the head cast coming?), and I'm a sucker for a story with a kid.
I guess I'll have to sign up for Facebook. Someone else said I should join up. Lord knows, I never use my Linkdn and Google+ accounts.

I know what you mean. I can barely keep up with a few and man Facebook just seems to suck me in and take all my time, but there is a ton of stuff on it.

Great sculpt on Rocket's head! If you're selling casts, I'm in. I love the idea of Mega Blocks figures for a base. Very interested in seeing how he and Groot turn out. It's a bloody shame that movie-style Guardians figures were never put out in 1:18; they could have made a bundle.
FWIW, your Cane Adiss ranks among my all-time favorite customs.
-
Rocket looks great! Fantastic work on that sculpt - I admire your patience and attention to detail.

Hey yarders!
I need to stop tweaking Groot's head. The magnifiers have gotten me pretty far, but it got to the point that I was sculpting using my iPad on max magnification. The white Aves was making me crazy, so I painted on eyes and gave him a thin wash to see the details.
Work on the body isn't quite as slow. I'm using pics of the 1/6 scale Groot as a guide for the wood patterns on his body.
I've finally manned up and splurged on some good mold making stuff. Molding heads tomorrow.

The first head casts are curing right now?
Hey Yarders
Clone Crazy has posted another chapter of his KOTOR opera chapter seven, The Mandolorian Wars.
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=9990.0
He's revealed a new character named Queen Nysa, which I've been keeping under wraps for months until he posted her in the PN. Turnaround is fair play. I think I kept him waiting for about two years for his commissions.
She was inspired by a sketch on Deviant Art, referred to as Visas Marr and by Raven of the Teen Titans.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/323485185712854969/
The base figure is GI Joe Rise of Cobra, Paris Pursuit Baroness. I've made a few modifications and used one of those Depa Billaba head casts. The cloak and hood are made of purple nitrile gloves. She's one of four commissions I made for CC. I'll reveal the others, after he does.

I didn't notice that until you mentioned it.

Stunning! The use of a nitrile glove is inspired! She does indeed look like Visas Marr (a character from KOTOR II if you didn't know that already).
-
She is a star, buddy DH I promise, much more of her story to come! You have contributed so much to the series already!

I've been using nitrile for a while now. Cloth is nice but there's just no way to get it to look natural at 1/18th scale. Nitrile seems to have the a much better thickness and flow. Here's another teaser from one of the figures I sent CC...
That was made from the pinky of a glove I got at my dentist's office.
UNUSED! :-X. Since it's a finger, it was just the right size for a dress, seamless.
It's a pain to work with though. I need to use Loctite flexible glue to get it on a figure. The pants on Yakface took about five hours and five tries to get right. If I'm a little sloppy, it just melts the PVC. Forget about do-overs.
It takes color from Sharpies and even holds paint as long as there's no handling, but I really prefer using the desired color glove. It's available in a wide range of colors, but just try finding it. It's embarrassing to beg a few gloves from a doctors office, ambulance or food service. "What do you need it for"?......

Let me know if you have any other characters in development. You know how slowly I work. I think I started Rocket and Groot eight weeks ago and the bodies aren't even done.

Wow, great material to use for dresses. Time to share.
Any advice you can give for working with it and then adding color to it would be awesome! It sure did work great on the latest one you showed us.

Hey Yarders
Work on Rocket and Groot's bodies has stalled while I got the heads and their molds as good as I could. I'm finally satisfied. I experimented with different tints. Dark brown is the way to go for Rockets and light tan with a hint of green for Groot.

Man they look great. Can't wait to see them finished.

Looking awesome! I think your color decisions are spot on. Look forward to the finished product :)

Thanks Starchaser, JDeck and Tamer
Up until now, I've been avoiding Rocket's body. I'm using a Megablock figure, but I've been making adjustment to the arms and legs, hence the need for Ultra-articulated Spider-Man wrists. The elbow looks less bulky. The real problem for me was the legs. In many renderings, Rocket stands on his forefeet, and his ankles don't rest on the ground. That presented a major problem because of his size.
Making a forefoot hinge
I saw this trick on FigureRealm. They feature a tutorial on how to make a hinge in a hand of a six inch scale figure so it could hold items more securely. I gave it a go with 3.75 scale Bilbo Baggins feet, mostly because I liked the sculpt of the toes. I drilled through the feet and ran a thin paper clip through. I pulled out the metal hinge and made my cuts.
These were my planned cuts.
(I've been experimenting with Ibis Paint app)
After making the cuts, i ran metal pin back thru. I had to do some repair work with acrocyanate filler, but I got the joints to swing securely.
Incorporating rare earth magnets
I definitely want to be able to recreate the movie prison riot scene when Rocket stands on Groot's back, but I don't want to go crazy trying to balance one figure on top of another, so I figured putting magnets in the feet was the way to go. These magnets are 1 mm diameter and 0.5 mm thick. There are larger stronger magnets in Groot's arm and back.
Here's a pic of Rocket's foot on Groot's right arm.
i still have to repair that broken wrist. :-\
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/Rocket%20and%20Groot/67AF03E4-FE8B-410A-9624-9B4FD4991672.jpg)
Fabricating rocker ankles
This is where that Ultra-articulated Spidey wrist comes in. I needed something really small and that ball joint is the smallest I know of, even smaller than an Ahsoka Tano ankle. I cut the ankle and then bored it hollow with a Dremel.
It was a tight fit. There was so little plastic left that the light was shining through the flesh colored paint to the inside. First, I coated the ball joint and its peg with liquid mask. Then, I filled the foot with a tiny amount of fast curing marine plastic repair resin. While the resin was still fresh and soft, I shoved the peg into the foot. Once the resin cured, the foot worked better than expected.
This shows the range of motion.
So there it is, the smallest foot with a ball jointed rocker ankle and a hinged forefoot I could make. It's rough and needs some serious finishing, but they both work. The next step is attaching the ankles to the knees.
Thanks Yarders.
-
Wow so much to learn here. Thanks for sharing.
It looks great. Off to tell the world.

Just having a little fun with molding.
I never liked the nankles and swelbows of the SAGA Death Star Gunner, but we are just never going to see a better sample. I figure if I grab a couple of INCs form Sinodolls. How hard can it be to suit them up with a helmet and armor?

Great job on Rocket and Groot so far Sjefke!
I agree your paint job on the Guaran Kal Fas cast head looks better.
I wouldn't mind getting one of those Guaran Kal Fas cast heads from you. Want to trade one of those for one of my cast heads equal in value?

Boy I agree, your paint work is so much better. Off to share the latest.

I'll save that link. The organization of the product is way better than if you go through eBay; saved sellers.
It's a pity. Up until a month ago, Sinodolls was selling five TVC INCs with helmet for around $20. Five Chewbaccas too. They've since disappeared, except they still have individual Chewies.

Hey Yarders
I've been between residences for the last few months, so all my stuff has been boxed up, but I have been sitting pics of a few customs that I didn't want to reveal until CloneCrazy posted his latest PN Will of the Force, chapter Friends and Foes .
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10112.msg194914#msg194914
Here is the first of several featured Force sensitive females.
This one was inspired by a Jedi I saw on DeviantArt.
The base figure is a ScarJo Black Widow, with the head of On Stranger Tides, Penelope Cruz. I sculpted the tunic and the waist wrap with green stuff. The skirt is blue nitrile. Her mantle is a coarse black cloth, secured in place with Locktite flexible glue.

So that's it for now, Yarders.
I'll post another two females soon and good news for me. I'll be moving into my new place soon, so I can set up shop again and finally complete some unfinished projects, like Rocket and Groot.
-
She looks spot on to me from that image. Great work and great to see you with a new custom! Off to share.

It's good to post something, but I can't wait to get a work table set up. I really want to finish some projects and then start some new ones.
My artistic daughter is even getting me motivated. She's a big Tim Burton fan, and wants to make a custom Jack Skellington. I love a challenge.

Here's another of the ladies that CloneCrazy commissioned. This one is Queen Talia. CC wanted her to look like Evanora from Oz the Great and Powerful
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/sisters/image_3.jpeg)
I used Marvel Universe, Sue Richards as the base figure. I casted the head of Depa Billaba and sculpted a very intricate hair piece. All the bobs are individually sculpted and attached to the head with fabric covered elastic, which avoids limiting the range of motion of the head. They're basically address label elastics so from the airport. I had to grind down her overly generous MU chest, but she still looks like Dolly Parton.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/sisters/87CC3129-6FFD-4B8D-AECA-CB093A680FF2.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/sisters/EB67AC39-AE03-4807-89A3-A65E0C350CD6.jpg)
I'm really proud of the soft goods. The dress is the finger of a green nitrile glove which I slipped over her legs. The belt is all sculpted. The collar is all black feathers. I made emeralds with 2 component resin mixed with a little emerald paint and green sparkles. Each one is a tiny, smaller than a millimeter drop. Finally, the emerald necklace is a separate piece complete with a fine silver metal wire as the chain and a staple clip as the setting.

That's it for now. The Red Witch is next, but she's got some really fun features that CloneCrazy hasn't revealed yet, so patience.

Wow, a ton of work and it pays off. Off to share

I am only getting around to commenting on these ! Great work especially the force sensitive woman . I really like how you use the nitrile and the effect it creates . If i am not mistaken didn't you use it for the necks on cane adiss and a few others? I may have to try that technique down the road on a custom. I cant imagine it being difficult to use on a custom ...Anyway Great job my friend

I love the look of nitrile at that scale, but it is a PITA to use. It comes in a dozen colors, but if you can't find a match, stay on the lookout for white as it takes color well. Depending on what soft goods piece you're making takes practice and patience. The first of Cane Adiss' necks took 12 tries and eight hours. Yakface's pants took three hours. Get Locktite flexible glue and very sharp scissors. Make your first project a kama.

I love your custom with Penelope cruz head. i just checked the figure out on amazon and the price is not so bad. I was thinking of getting into producing a comic. I have the last page already done. I am releasing it in reverse order! I am finishing some set pieces now, and i am starting to look at some kit bash customs i can put together. I am definitely going to look into that line of figures for pieces. The Last 15 pages will be released a page at a time over the next 3 weeks.

I got a bunch of these figures at Walmart when they went on clearance for $2 each. They weren't much for articulation, but the likenesses and the accessories were exceptional. I'd love to do something with Captain Jack Sparrow.
Good luck with your photo novel and can't wait to see your 3D prints.

I remember when you teased this figure while talking about the use of nitrile gloves for clothing. The final figure turned out really well! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Starchaser.
I've been sitting on those pics for more than a year, in deference to CloneCrazy and his PN.
You make some extremely intricate customs. Not that your softwoods don't look great, but you should try experimenting with nitrile yourself. It's a pain to work with at first, but it looks great at 3.75 scale.
-
I'm convinced and will have try it out here when I get a bit more time. (Also, thanks for the compliment.)

I am wondering what Yuzzum has been working on in his shop. Always great to see an update from the artist formerly known as Sjefke!

Hey, Yuzzums Customs has been on hiatus after going through some life changing stuff. Really! Last February, I had to box everything up and move out of the house. Well I've moved into my own place and finally unpacking the crafts supplies. I really want to finish up a bunch of old projects .... if I can find them.
Here's a commission I made for Clone Crazy's The Will of the Force. She's the Red Witch, who was inspired by the character, The Silent Wife from the steampunk/Kung Fu movie, Tai Chi Zero.
The base figure was GI Joe, Retaliation, Jinx. I fabricated the belt, including the buckle from paper and stiffened it up by saturating it with crazy glue. The front of the skirt is made of nitrile and painted with Vallejo acrylic.
I used the head of a The Corps figure and hollowed it out to make the mask. I made a few modifications and painted in multiple layers; black, silver, black and finally red. The weathering is actually distressing. The eye holes actually go through the mask and you can see the figure's eyes peering out. It's creepy up close. Unfortunately, I couldn't capture that in the pics as the scale is too small and my photography too weak.

That's all I'm going to reveal for now. The mask is removable, but seeing the face would be a big time spoiler.
The figure has a cloak that I'm very proud of. I'll show those pics next time.
Thanks Yarders.

Can I reveal the cloak.? I never took pics of how it opens and closes.

Yeah, go for it!

Here's the soft goods cloak that I made for the Red Witch. I used fabric glue, as sewing is not one of my skills. This actually opens in the front and is secured with seven 1 mm disc shaped rare earth magnets, which are secured in the fabric. It's a little tricky to put on, but it's very form fitting, yet still allows good range of motion. Unfortunately, I failed to take pics of the cloak open.
I also glued a flower wire into the bottom of the cloak which helps the fabric hold its form.

Cool figure! the belt and custom soft goods on the red witch is very nicely done.

Wow, what great use of that mask, never thought to shave it down, and put it on another figure. The cloak is pretty rad too, sewing is overrated, and I think fabric glue works better in most cases anyway.

I manage to cut straighter, more even edges using paper than by sculpting. I don't know how some customizers manage detailing sword pommels and the like. I'm staining my eyes with 2.5x magnifiers as it is.

Thanks Mandalore25
Shaving the mask took a bit of time with a dremel tool. While the mask does fit on the head cast, it has a tendency to scratch the paint off the nose. Wish I'd taken better close-ups.
Also, I wish I had taken pics of how the cloak opens. The rare earth magnets are hidden in the fabric and work like snaps.
Regarding the fabric glue, I brush on a very small amount on both surfaces that I want to attach. I let it set for about 2 minutes and then use it like contact cement. It works pretty fast that way and you can still make minor adjustments before it completely cures. I also painted a little on the cut edges of the fabric to keep it from fraying.
-
I don't know what I was doing, but I just now saw the soft goods cloak. Great work and back on the front pages.

The Winter Wookiee WIPs
Hey Yarders
I want to show the build of a figure I made for Clone_Crazy's latest photonovel chapter. He had asked for "kick a$$ Wookiees. I talked him into my female Wookiee. I'm not sure he'll use her, but I've fabricated some freaking awesome accessories for her.
This one I eventually nicknamed the Winter Wookiee. I started out with an MU Drax, an MU Dreadlock head and all the body parts from a Terminator T-1000. I cut up the Terminator and lengthened the upper arm with a plastic gun butt and spliced on the left wrist of Dreadlock with a Megablock figure ball joint. I cut off the Drax leg at the thigh and glued on the Terminator leg, making sure that the knee joints were even. The foot is actually the T-1000's upper arm, flipped upside down. The cyborg's ankle is the terminator's elbow, so it has rocker ankles. The feet looked kinda incomplete, so I sculpted on some toes. I dremelled out most of Drax's chest and secured the Terminator chest and back pieces.
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/WW/27E78C27-8A53-4593-8A31-D2FA89E84D4B.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/WW/AD373F7F-9336-4376-86FE-434F04A2DEE7.jpg).
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/WW/01EEA198-8E09-446B-9E62-926BC81B23D7.jpg) (http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/sjefke59/WW/F92D621B-9A58-497B-A26C-E1C3C29D0FA8_1.jpg)
I casted VOTC Chewey's left foot and stuck an extra large spare ball joint in it. Now he has a left Wookiee foot rocker ankle too.
To make the Wookiee's pelt, I laid on a layer of green stuff starting on the feet and hands and working my way up the limb. I made sure the fur overlapped the joints below to hide it. When he limbs were done, I worked from the pelvis up to the neck.
I cut off Dreadlock's lower face and shimmed it forward 2 mm to give him more of a Wookiee snout before sculpting the hair.
Finally, I sculpted on some more details and added greebles and more pistons.

I'll show the finished figure after Clone Crazy's next chapter.

I saw this image while wasting time on Pinterest and recently found her bio on Wookieepedia.
"Go, Asyr, go now. Waiting around is just gonna get you killed."

Asyr Sei'lar was a female Bothan pilot who served on Rogue Squadron for the New Republic Defense Force.
Species: Bothan
Gender: Female
Height: 1.74 meters
Hair color: Black and white
Eye color: Violet

-
Great job on the head sculpt! Are you going to try to make her tresses on her shoulders too?
Yesses on the tresses.
I’ve got them on silk thread, so as not to inhibit head movement.
I have very small holes at the bottoms of those hair locks to accept them, but I want to mold and cast the head first.
I had an accident yesterday.
Dropped the thing and broke an ear.
😫💩🤬
Another setback.
-
ARGH! I hate it when that happens. Hopefully you can reattach and not have to resculpt the whole thing.
-
ARGH! I hate it when that happens. Hopefully you can reattach and not have to resculpt the whole thing.
Yup
Fortunately, I did find it....
.... and droped it again the next second.
This time , lost for good.
No idea where it went.
The darned (and I really want to say something a little stronger than darned) piece is maybe 3 mm long with a metal wire.
Couldn’t even find it with a magnet.
-
Jeff you have luck like me. I hope you find your ear! Dang, this is really looking good.
-
That sculpt is really brilliant! So sorry about the ear, that's so frustrating! I hope you can repair the damage, as the project is looking so amazing.
-
The head sculpt is amazing.
I can't wait to see the finished figure.
-
Hi Yarders
I promise I’ll finish Asyr Sei’lar soon. I resculpted the head about a dozen times and did a lot of body work. It’s taken forever.
In the meantime, I’d love to show this off.
Its a completed commission From about two years ago.
He is Fuzzy Fett, a Wookiee Mandalorian inspired by a pic I saw on Pinterest.
The base figure is an old Wookiee warrior to which I added double hinged elbows and knees and rocker ankles.
The helmet and armor are original sculpts.
The blunderbuss blaster is a tricked out Lancer droid lance merged with some old out of scale, plastic rifle. The size worked out well.
Eat your heart out Chewie.
This is the way

Hey Yarders
I did finish the Winter Wookiee aka Cyborg Wookiee a while ago, but never posted the finished produce because he was supposed to be revealed in a photo novel.

Hey thanks for the flashback! I was busy around that time as well so I apologize for not commenting earlier. Your Winter Wookiee looks fantastic! I'm not even sure if it's a hurt Wookiee with cyborg parts or a Terminator in Wookiee disguise. The blades look awesome, too! Excellent sculpting work here! Looks like Green Stuff, isn't it?
-
How you blended that metal into his leg and body is just awesome. Its not just a straight cut and glue together. Its all in the transitions they say.
-
Your Cyber Wookie's Ryyk blades are fantastic. Love the shapes, wrapped hilts, everything.
-
Cybernetic wookiee is amazing! I really like it, awesome work!
-
Terminator meets Star Wars. The best crossover I can think of.
Your Cyborg Wookiee looks phenomenal.
-
I could so see a soft goods robe or cape or something that would show just a hint of the metal terror beneath. I agree it is a great concept of SW meets T800. I always wondered how much cooler Luke would have been to have a real metal hand.

Hey Yarders
Here’s my 3D Loje Nella build. It’s not finished, but I couldn’t wait to show these WIPs.
I have given up on free hand sculpting. 1/18th is just too small, and I need to wear magnifiers that destroy my depth perception. Don’t get me started on sculpting media work time. It was all too frustrating.
My GF got me a resin 3D printer for my birthday, and I love it. Thank you Cal for talking me through my baby steps.
I’ve printed a few things, but I decided to try Forger for iPad. It’s only ten bucks, which is much more reasonable than Z-brush.
Anyway, I decided to start with something relatively simple, Loje Nella. He’s another blink and you miss him character from Jabba’s palace.
I started out with a couple of spheres, a hemisphere and a cylinder.
Blocking it out was pretty quick. There is a learning curve and there are a lot of features to try out. Once you get the hang of it, you can really move quickly. Detailing is fun, but I can lose hours obsessing over a single pixel.
Once I was satisfied, I downloaded the file onto the cloud, then to my slicer program and then I stuck the flash into the printer.
I am very happy with the results.
My Phrozen prints slices 30 microns thick.
I could never match this free hand.
The body will come soon.
See you then.

It's so good to see you back Sjefke! Now,these are some thrilling screenshots right there! Never saw this character before and you say it's an easy one to make a CAD for. Okay then, I have no idea about how difficult 3D shaping really is, but I now it's time consuming.
This piece turned out great printed out! Can't wait to see the full custom figure.
So apparently you've made the first step into a larger world! I'm genuinely impressed.
By the way I think you would be well advised to marry your GF after she gave a resin printer to you. Just sayin'. Oh, and happy belated birthday to you!
-
Thanks so much Darth More.
I’ve ever really been away. I still watch what everyone is doing on ISY, but haven’t produced much. Ive just spent the last two years trying to sulpt miniature heads, and it has been slow going, and I’ve been watching ISY.
And you’re right. Virtual sculpting and resin printing is the next level. The detail is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve got a few other projects in the works and hope I can do them justice with the painting and soft goods.
And (BIG AND) I fully intend to put a ring on it 🥰. She’s perfect for me.
-
Wow, that looks excellent! 3D printing sure holds a lot of promise, especially in light of Hasbro's weird approach to the 1:18 scale. My son is working with a Elegoo Mars for 28mm figures and having a ball. I haven't convinced him to shift to 1:18 for me yet :) He is still working of perfecting his technique with prints and building supports, so has only experimented with stl's from other folks. Soon enough (probably this summer) he will venture in to designing his own figures.

Maybe you could time share it with your son.
Once I have the body sculpted out, I can share the iCloud link.
