So, over on io9.com (not plugging, I promise,) I mentioned my idea to custom-mold these figures and now I'm actually getting requests for orders.  I'm wondering, how do I go about doing that?  I can't exactly make figures for money, as it would be copyright infringement, but the funds from the orders would definitely help me with the molding process.  Any ideas?
I have altered the action figure. Pray I don't alter it further.

Hmm...that is a good question. I mean, I have seen people sell customs on eBay, however, I don't know if it is legal or not.

I believe Lucas would do something about it if it were illegal

In general, recasters are left alone as long as they are 1) small-scale in operation, 2) aren't passing the work off as their own, and 3) not charging stupidly large amounts for their work.  I think also offering just parts rather than entire figures helps.

There are some interesting plans here, I can't wait to see your progress.

I know. I can't wait to see these myself. A KOTOR or The Old Republic toy line would be SO awesome and I believe, IMHO, very successful.  They could re-release the games for the newer systems, have combo packs with exclusive figures, and even more comic packs. They are seriously missing the boat.

Am I the only one that thinks toy companies are seriously missing out on tie-in possibility?  Like, buy a toy, get an exclusive code for DLC for the game it goes to.
But some KOTOR toys, get unlockable skins or alternate weapons or outfits or even exclusive levels, concept art and music via your live platform.  I can't be the only one that thinks that would sell figures like hotcakes.

One of the reasons recasters are left alone is because unpainted parts generally don't constitute copyright infringement in appearance because they are a different color than the original part in the same way that a person could negate the copyright of an image by inverting it or changing the colors used.

The name that you give these parts is another matter as lucasfilm ltd owns all of the names. For example, they would own the name "clone trooper"

See some of the past Hasbro answers for some of the figures we have asked about that would sell great. Lets just say you won't leave that reading feeling very good. It is kind of like the Republic Commandos, or Revan and Malak. The demand is very high for those figures, but do you ever think we will see these in the legends or heroes line ups?

Common sense would make these figures you are wanting great sellers, but you know how the rest of the saying goes.

I agree with all of you. Let's over-throw the Hasbro Star Wars division and run it ourselves.  OK, maybe that is a bit extreme.
