Title: XRFIWR's Customs - Clone Concepts
Post by: XRFIWR on March 22, 2011, 06:23:51 PM
Okay, so this was not an original idea, but once my kids saw pictures of this guy online that's all they could talk about.  SO here's my first completed custom, Sergeant Boomer.

This was a trial and error experience, but I'm please with how it turned out.  Though once my kids see the completed version with weathering in the morning I suspect they are going to want all their clones weathered at the very least.

Welcome to the boards!  Very nice for a first attempt; your kids should be proud...and looks like you'll be kept busy weathering some clones in the near future!  Looking forward to seeing more in the future!

Nice Boomer.  Looks kind of like mine, except you have a more accurate color scheme.  Any chance we can see any clearer pictures?

Trusty iPhone 4 takes better pictures than my digital camera.  Pics are too high resolution so I have to try through Flickr.  May be a little trial and error here.

Thanks for all the kind words.  I really appreciate all the help on this in the Resources and References Forum.  If you have suggestions on how I can improve my next one let me know.  I'll be working on an ARC Trooper right after I take a shot at this mini rig contest.

Title: Re: First Completed Custom - Sergeant Boomer
Post by: XRFIWR on March 25, 2011, 01:55:49 PM
Ahh, the cake.  All my son wanted for his 6th birthday, a little over a month ago, was a Boba Fett cake.  Didn't ask for toys or anything.  My wife did some research with a couple local cake companies and the best we could get was $50 to make a cake.  This being completely unacceptable to me, I told my wife that I would make the cake.  Large arguements insued and the fate of the entire party was placed squarely on my shoulders.  I "borrowed" from another design I found online, my son loved it and my wife even agreed it was pretty good.

"Pretty good" my fuzzy backside!!  That is STUNNING!  Heck, that's a cake that *I* would be thrilled to be presented with (on May 17th) for my (41st) birthday!

(there are no subliminal messages in this post.  but if someone did make me a Star Wars themed cake, a Mando helmet would be a great one!)

I remember cake decorating sets that were sold back in the early '80s for R2-D2, vader, and Fett cakes; I think my mother made all three at one point for my brothers and I.  Your son should consider himself very lucky to have such a great dad!  I'll have to see if my son will be interested in that stuff or not!   :)

Title: XRFIWR Customs - New Arc Trooper
Post by: XRFIWR on March 28, 2011, 06:52:57 PM
After several clone coloring projects with the kids a few ideas came together to make this new Arc Trooper.  My 6 year old has named him "Lieutenant Blast", so that's what we're going with.  Some cool ideas I had on the leg paint were completely hidden under the kama, so that might get repeated on another figure.  It's pretty clear that I'm a big fan of the weathering with this guy, but I might not go as crazy on the next ones.

Title: Re: XRFIWR 's Customs - New Arc Trooper
Post by: XRFIWR on March 29, 2011, 07:59:19 AM
Thanks all.  Much appreciated.  I'm especially happy with how the helmet turned out.  The Kama was actually the second one I did.  The first was much longer and didn't look right once it was on. Had to glue the pauldron down as it was one of the side slide on ones from a cheaper version of clone troopers I'd picked up off eBay and it wouldn't stay put.  Very happy with this one.

My boys love this guy and now have me doing some light weathering on their Rex, Cody, Waxer, and Boil figures before I look at another custom.  They also saw a great battle worn turbo tank on this site when we first discovered it, but I've been delaying that one until I get my mini rig finalized.

Title: Re: XRFIWR 's Customs - Wolffe Pack Question
Post by: XRFIWR on April 01, 2011, 02:04:56 PM
Here's an opinion question for everyone.  I have the packaged Sinker and Boost characters (brown painting), but don't yet have a Commander Wolffe.  My kids want to get Wolffe and have me make a couple Wolffe Pack ARF troopers, but there is a big debate about the colors we should use.

So the question is would you create ARF troopers in brown to match Sinker and Boost or use one of the Wolffe color schemes and update Sinker and Boost in the process?
Title: Re: XRFIWR 's Customs - Wolffe Pack Question
Post by: Ricky_Stream on April 01, 2011, 02:14:23 PM
i would update them to the new color scheme...which is what  i am doing, actually :)

Nothing major here, but as per the kids request I just did some weathering on their Captain Rex to go with the new Boomer and Blast figures.  While I was doing that I went ahead and did their Commander Cody, Waxer and Boil too.

Waiting for some daylight to snap individual pictures, but here is a preview shot of my latest customs. I took three of Commander Wolffe's "space troopers" and did a repaint for Sinker, Boost and Comet.  Then, based on my son and his friend's drawings I created a few Wolfpack ARF Troopers, Mouse (far left) and Bolt (far right).  The wolf logos on the chest of these two was the hardest thing I've had to deal with painting to date, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out.

Now just waiting on a few eBay purchases to arrive so I can add Plo Koon and create a Commander Wolffe.  Still looking for anyone that has a Republic Gunship with fully closed doors willing to trade for one of my Wampa Gunships so I can create one of Plo Koons custom painted Gunships for this unit.

Nothing special for paints.  I start with a clear Krylon Fusion base and then use the Liquitex Basics (http://www.liquitex.com/basicsvaluecolor/).

Title: Re: XRFIWR 's Customs (Captain Lock, Tiger and Rack)
Post by: XRFIWR on June 27, 2011, 07:04:33 PM
With the leftover parts I used on Commander Wolf (a combo of Rex and Cody) I was trying to figure out what guy to make when my son suggested a Captain Lock.  I'll admit the colors aren't a perfect match, but they wanted him to go with their green clones from the Anti-Hailfire squad, so I went a little darker.  And while I was going through this process my son drew up the design for Tiger below and I came up with the look for Rack.  So here are three new guys so the kids have a larger green squad (I couldn't convince them to let me do a Commander Gree).

Captain Lock

Rack (named for his raccoon like eyes)

Thanks all again for the kind words.  After looking at the pictures again I think I need to update some of the weathering on Rack and post an update.

I stumbled across this link on Twitter with about a dozen cool clone trooper concepts.  Just thought I'd share with the customs crowd for ideas.

Oh wow this brings back memories! These were created by an artist that goes by Jubjub Jedi. They were done years ago and I made two of these guys. These are such great designs they are timeless!
