Title: The World of Darth C
Post by: Darth C on August 03, 2008, 07:42:09 AM
Well, yesterday was a packed busy day.  Dropped the kids off at my parents for the night, pick them up later this morning.  So Barb and I had a busy day yesterday by ourselves, you need that every once in awhile.  Started off going to the Star Wars exhibit in St Paul.  That was alot of fun, really wasn't what I thought it was going to be, but did get to see alot of props, costumes and models for the movies.  Left there and hit a bunch of targets looking for closeout toys, found an rebel pilot evol set, so I picked that up.  Went out to lunch and were palnning on seeing Mama Mia, great chick flick, but our 2 free tickets we had weren't valid on Saturdays.  Cancelled that, went home worked on my dio and did some cleaning.  At around 4pm went to our favorite restuarant and dinner and then headed over to another movie theater to is Batman in imax, well got there to buy our 7pm tickets ans she said they sold out about an our ago, so we didn't want to wait for the 11pm show, so we just went to walmart and brought groceries for home and camping next weekend.  Worked on the dio and finsihed it last night, pics are posted in the thread.  Watched a disney trip planning dvd, we are hoping to go sometime early next spring and finally went to bed around midnight.

We had a great time when we went to Disney 3 yrs ago. Which are you going to West or East?

East, to Florida.

Buddy, you have got to squeeze in the Universal parks and Tamer won't forgive you if you don't go to Disney MGM to see the big walker outside of Star Tours.

Is that part and on disney grounds?
Title: Re: The World of Darth C

MGM is a disney park but not on the same grounds as the magic kingdom. If you get a park hopper pass, It will allow you to go to Animal Kingdom, MGM, the Magic kingdom, and the Disney city walk which is a boardwalk waterfront bar hopping type of place. Star Tours is just one of the cooler attractions in MGM and happens to have a life-sizeish AT-AT walker mocked up in front of it.
The universals are a competing set of parks that you must also go see. there is Universal studios Hollywood and Universal's islands of adventure. I am sure that there is a ticket deal that will allow you to go back and forth to both of those parks, also.

Chad I am gonna need to pick your brain on this when you get back. We are gonna do this too one day down to Florida.  Its not going to be for a few years yet though. Great idea on the walker thing Clint!

I will have to dig around and find a pic of that walker. Tamer, when you see it, you will swear that you need one in your yard. The chin guns on this thing reciprocate and shoot out smoke like mist while the chin gun sound effect is played.

Now that would make a good blind/treestand for me to use when rifle season comes in!

They must have something like that at disney hollywood studios.  On the dvd I was watching they had the head of the atat at the park.

Well today I was in the shop skinning birds.  My plan was to get 2 pheasants, 1 grouse and 2 wood duck done today.  Got the 2 pheasants done, went to work on the other 3 and they were bad.  What had happened was I had them in the freezerrefrig in the garage last winter and I guess when its cold out they basically stop working, well to birds spoiled and feathers were falling out, so no point going on with them.  Went to the travel agent to start the process of figuring out our disney trip, its not going to be cheap that's for sure.  Spent the afternoon cleaning out our storage area in the basement, getting rid of stuff and reorganizing.  Did make some head way there.  Now my day off is coming to an end as I got to go pick up the girls from daycare.

three years ago, My trip with the wife and myself cost roughly $1200 for 4-5 days including air fare, tickets to the disneys and the universals, and hotel. the hotel provided transportation to and from the parks and to and from the airport. I would bet that it's more now.

Mmmm how many years Shawn? would be nice to revisit the Disney and Uni parks like we did before we hit C3...and yes the Walker and Speeder bikers out front..but the best was the SW Shop!

A costly venture to be sure but it is a once in a lfetime trip.
as promised, here is a pic of me infront of the walker at Disney MGM. Not life sized quite but it would make a nice yard ornament for Tamer.
Also I have posted a pic of myself with a couple of costumed x-men characters at universal's islands of adventure.
I had just mentioned to the girls that their costumes looked great and the Rogue character grabbed me by the shirt and said flatley " they are uniforms" when the wifey took the shot.

That ATAT does look sweet. I am not sure yet the exact year we are going. The wife was wanting to go to Disney when the gal was four our five, but now she thinks it will mean more and she will remember more if she is a little older like eight or nine. I dont know. Funds will probably dictate the when I would guess. Sure doesnt sound cheap.

Its not, It's something for us that's not going to be every year, maybe every 5 years.  But talking to people that go, its worth it.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Clonehead on August 04, 2008, 06:36:26 PM
you are correct sir! Disney MGM to be exact. The actual star tours ride that the walker is in front of could have been a little better IMO but seeing this monster up close and a trip through the star tours store on your way out of the ride is a great SW experience.

Like I said, there are actually 4 disney parks in orlando.
the magic kingdom
the animal kingdom
disney mgm
epcot center

and if you get a disney park hopper pass, you can go back and forth between the parks at will for however many days your pass lasts.

I think that there is also a water park but I can't remember the name of that one.

And Tamer, with that walker waiting for you, I would think that price would be a non-concern.

Yeah, I feel the same way Chad. I am gonna do it at least once and see how I survive it. If it goes ok, and I know it will, I will probably go again.

We did over Magic Kingdom and Universal. Another highlight was Downtown Disney. A  bunch of Shops all Disney orientated in the central shopping area. Not sure exact location as my Canuck friend was driving everywhere but the Toy store they had was awesome!..Even the Lego shop (which i don't get into) was just over the top.....

Woke up this morning at 5am, went out to the garage for a smoke and noticed the garage door open, a little puzzled, then I noticed the refrig door open with some bottle water laying on the floor, then it hit me, someone has been in here.  Checked the truck and forgettful me I left it unlocked and they went into the truck, took some smokes and the garage door opener, opened the door and went in the frig and took some alcohol.  So I had my dad come over later and deactivate the garage opener until I could get home, reprogrammed the other remote, so at least the one that is missing shouldn't be able to work(hopefully).  Not my way of starting the day and still not in a very good mood!
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Clonehead on August 14, 2008, 03:34:39 PM
Chad, that is a bum deal. I'm sorry that it happened. You did the right thing with the garage door. It's not hard to reprogram to a different code if you have another opener.   Sounds like the work of some kids with too much time on their hands.
How did the door get open in the first place? In the past, I have noticed our door opening itself before possibly caused by lightening or a power surge. I ended up putting a dead-bolt in the door leading from the garage to the kitchen. Also, when we leave for more than a couple of days, we throw the dead bolt on the garage door, itself.

Post by: Phatty on August 14, 2008, 03:41:01 PM
Definitely kids, probably close by who know you have a fridge in your garage.  Maybe it's just me, but I'd be hooking a car battery to the fridge so next time they get in (if that happens) and they go for a cold one, they'll wake up in the hospital pissing themselves!

Chad you do have luck like me. Man, that is awful. Sure sounds like kids to me too. I hope they catch em and nail em to the wall.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Darth C on August 14, 2008, 07:15:27 PM
Yea guys it was kinda of a bum day.  They opened the door with the remote from the truck.  In any event everyone was alright and nothing of value was taken.  Found out there were quite a few cars that were went through.  Now I'll be putting motion sensor lights on the front of the house and not leaving the door remote in the truck anymore.  On a postitive note got another estimate for my hail damage and this one was $1100 compared to $3500-$4700 from the first guy, guess who will not be getting any work.  The higher guys was the one that did it before and it seems like he is trying to screw me.  Morale of the story do not give contractors your paperwork from the ins company as to the amount they gave you in your claim, it seems the bid is right around what the ins gave you.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Tamer on August 15, 2008, 04:49:09 AM
Well I am glad to hear that nothing of great value was taken. Good, I am glad your hail damage estimate is good. Hopefully that will leave you plenty of deniro for new SW goodies or a nice little start to your Disney savings fund! Wish I could find a windfall like that! You sure do have a good point about contractors and inusurance jobs though. I am glad this one worked out.

You've been lucky, they could have taken the truck and the fridge, and anything else in that garage of yours, you got of pretty lucky a couple of smokes and a bit alcohol, I would definitely be fitting a Dead Bolt however like clonehead said.

And its great news for you that the repairs are going to be less than you thought, just shows you shop around for the best bargains, dont just take first one that comes along.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Darth C on August 15, 2008, 06:44:31 PM
Well this is how I'm approaching my security issues.  First off making sure my truck is locked with nothing of value in the open.  Its a crap shoot about locking vehicles, sometimes if its locked then they will break a window to get in, compared to just leaving it unlocked.  But I am going to lock it.  Next, not going to leave my garage door opener in the truck anymore, it will be a pain bringing it in all the time, but a little extra safety.  Next, going to be installing security motion sensor lights tomorrow.  I wanted to put 4 sets of them on the front of the house to replace the lights we already have, but the boss quashed that idea.  so I will be installing one set to start under an eve to light up the whole driveway, will see how well that works, might add another.  I want that area light up like a ball field.  If anyones got any more ideas lmk, I'm tired of this happening every year, it needs to stop now.

Ferocious wife perhaps, but seriously, I would get a camera, fit the spot light, and do the rest of what you suggested - unfortunately a determined thief will get in, and I dont want to scare you its just a proven fact.

I'm thinking of getting a camera.  Its mainly just kids we are dealing with.  I believe the lights will be a big enough deterent for them.  The dog at this time is not an option, won't get another dog until we move someday with a little more yard area.

I like the idea of the really lit up area. I bet that works. Maybe a sign saying you have security protection even if you dont have a system might be a deterrent. Still kids probably will stay away for a brightly lit area.  Too bad you can't pin point a date the activity starts, you could set up a night or two and catch em!

Well it time to give a little update.  Last week was a busy week at work, seemed like all I did was work overtime everyday.  On friday we went camping, but before we could go I had to work a 12 hour day and drive 600 miles, boy was I tired and crabby.  At least we only had to go about 20 miles to get to the campground.  Camping we alot of fun, went with 3 other neighbor groups.  Got another busy week of work and then another camping trip for labor day weekend.  This will be our last trip for the year.  Going to our state fair on sunday, monday relax, and on tuesday I took the day off to prefish a tournament I'm fishing the following weekend.  After that its HUNTING TIME!

Ok guys, its been quite awhile since I have been active on the site.  Sorry for that, but alot has been going on here lately.  First off I have decided to stop collecting.  With the uncertainity of the economy I felt it was the best thing to do right now and also to save money for our disney trip and also to concentrate on taxidermy.  I will still be around, but just not collecting.  I have been spending alot of time doing my taxidermy work as of late and getting ready for the upcoming turkey and deer season.  The lastest thing has been my computer got infected again and has been down.  It had 4 viruses and 277 spyware issues on it.  So I just got it back today.  So other then that, that's about it.

Chad, you've taken a step in the direction that many of us have thought about, and just as many have echoed.  I, myself, have begun to slow my spending on a great deal of items.  I can definitely appreciate the desire to save money and concentrate on other interests.  You've done some good work with taxidermy, I like the pics you post here!

Well its been awhile since I posted anything here.  I have come to the decision it is time to leave my job.  Working conditions are really becoming unbearable as of latley and I'm just so sick and tired and stressed out that I can't  take it anymore.  They have no compassion or understanding of there staff.  Pretty much they are really cutting back on any vacation time, changing our schedules around and so on.  I am the most senior guy in our unti and now it seems like I won't be assured any of my time off.  It has been a long time coming, but its fianlly come to a head.  The part I'm not liking is this is really a bad time to start all over, the job market is not really all that strong for someone with no marketable skills.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C

Wow Chad. Sounds like things at work are bad. I know you are working on your taxidermy classes and getting ready to go for that. I know I for one had a job that just made me ugly every day. I ditched it. I have never regretted that decision. I had to take a pay cut, but the loss of a few dollars is nothing compared to your sanity. You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

Man, Chad, that's a bummer about your job. I don't blame you for wanting to get out of a stressfull situation though. That's what I did last year when I quit working for Leavcon and it worked out for the better. Now I feel that my job is more secure and I made more this year.
Keep in mind that Ironworkers get no vacation, sick leave, or any other percs that a real job might offer.

I know that by doing this there will be some major changes that will have to happen.  I feel that if I stay doing this that I will have a heart attack sooner then later.  The job itself isn't bad its just the admin and the BS that goings with it.
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Tamer on November 13, 2008, 06:16:38 PM
I sometimes think my admin lives on a different planet from what I love on too. I totally understand the whole health aspect too. I had to get bp pills before I changed my job. You have gotta be able to get out of bed in the morning to go to work. I just couldn't stand knowing I had to go into that place. My wife actually made me get another job cause she couldn't live with me. Like I said, it was a pay cut, but the overall improvement it made in my life opened me up to other things. Like you guys for example!

Well it looks like I got a line on a new job.  Talked with my old boss who now works for the MN dept of homeland security and he gave me info on some security opening at our local nuclear power plant.  They are going to start hiring again in january and I should have a real good shot getting in.  Its a pay cut but not all that much.  The downside is it shift work with 12 hour shifts, but at least I would be out of my current job.

If it gets you out of a job you hate getting up for in the morning then it would be a dream job. You sure would have security protecting a nuclear power plant! I for one would feel safer knowing folks like you were watching those types of places. I hope it works out!

Those 12 hr days take a little getting used to. Would that give you more days off every week? If so It would be worth the trade. How far is it from the house?
Title: Re: The World of Darth C
Post by: Darth C on November 16, 2008, 06:32:19 PM
Yes it would be more days off, but the downside is not much time to see the family during your work schedule.  Its only about 10 miles from home.

Well a little update.  Found out today that my sheriff is retiring at the end of january.  So hopefully my new boss will be better.  I've known him for quite awhile so we will see what happens.  Decided not to take that security job as I found out it would cut my pay in half to start out.  During these times can't take that big of a hit.

Well its been awhile since I updated this.  We got our new sheriff last week.  No chnages yet, but he does want to meet with everyone and here their issues.  Been doing alot of ice fishing and am starting the taxidermy back up full steam.  Was at work this morning getting inmates ready for transport to the immigration office when Barb paged me.  Called her back and she said she was heading to the hospital, she was in unbearable pain.  Got over to the hospital as fast as I could and it was what I figured it was , another bout with kidney stones.  They shot her up with some strong drugs and sent her home around 10am.  She passed it around 3pm and is doing fine now.  Its amazing how something that small can cause so much pain.  Getting ready for our disney trip in a couple of weeks.

Well we got back last night from Disney.  All I can say is WOW!  It is overwelming.  These parks are so huge and the amount of people there is unbelievable.  With a solid 4.5 days there we maybe saw and did half o the stuff we wanted to do.  Its not a cheap vacation, but it was worth it just to see the girls having so much fun.  One day we had them made up as princesses and our oldest Emily just ate it up.  We were ready to come home, but wanted to stay longer.  We are already planning another trip there in a couple of years, it takes that long to save up.  If anyone one is planning on going there for the first time, LMK I'll fill you in on what to do and expect.

Well guys haven't been around much latley, Barb has been using the computer pretty much nonstop for the last week doing homework.  Well now at work we have been put on call for a one week stretch every 5 weeks.  So for 10 weeks a year I have no life and this also includes holidays and weekends.  Not real happy over this, but not much we can do at this time.

Well another work week just about down.  Got one more day then taking a short weekend trip to Wisconsin Dells at a water park.  Our neighbors were going to go with, but he just got laid off yesterday as a printer , there for 11 years, so they had to back out.  Picked up my deer, bear, and coyote capes from the tanner today.  Hopefully will start on that stuff pretty soon.

We got home this afternoon from our weekend getaway to the Wisconsin Dells.  Had a fun weekend, but it always seems to short. We rebooked our next years weekend and it seems the raised there rates on us, just can't catch a break.

Well got off work early today.  Worked on the dagobah playset.  Got our fed tax return and paid off the balance on our camper.  Will keep the rest of the refund for a rainy day.  Barb survived another round of layoffs at work.  This was the second round in about 6 months.  Hopefully there isn't a third.

Smart idea paying off any debt! I am doing some small home improvements myself and am wondering if I would be smarter to save some for a rainy day, but a guy has to have his camper! That is just a fun family thing. I do have plans to have a small popout one myself some day. Glad to hear your wife survived the layoff deal that seems to be everywhere now. I saw the mass layoff data on CNN today for February and it was awful.

Yea our pop up trailer is nice, really makes us want to camp more often.  So much nicer then tenting when you get our age.  Did stimulate the economy more on firday.  Went to Home Depot and bought a new cordless weed trimmer. an outdoor plastic storage box for the kids outdoor toys, and a new kitchen faucet that has been leaking.  On a side note anyone have any problems with dishwashers leaving a soapy film on the dishes?  I don't really know what the problem is.  Tried running a cycle with kool aid lemonade, made sure the water softner is full of salt.  Really hate to have to buy a new dishwasher right now.

Have you tried using Jet dry and how old is the dishwasher?
Nice job stimulating the economy, by the way.

It's a liquid. So your water is pretty soft going through your softener? I used to live in a town where the calcium was so bad that it would trash water using appliances within 2-3 years.

I couldn't really tell you how soft the water is, really don't know how well it works, other then it uses salt.  I think we may have screwed it up installing it, the water softner.  It just seemed to start acting up about a month ago.

I can always tell how soft the water is in the shower. If it is real soft, you have to scrub to get the soap to come off. If it is hard, the soap just rinses off.
Too soft of water could be your problem.

Clint has a point on the water thing. I had to install a soda ash system in addition to my water softener when it made my water too soft. Have you noticed any green residues, that would show the water is too soft because it is disolving some of the copper in your water lines.

If you get yours figured out come help me with mine. Using my hot water I am getting a slight red tinge. I have an iron filter that should be working ok. The water guys come to look at it on Thursday. My wife is meticulous with having good water.

Been awhile since I last updated this.  Been busy finishing up mounting fish.  Got 2 bass and a walleye all done and mounted on the bases.  Been a little under the weather as of latley.  2 weeks ago got a double ear infection, got that all cleared up and then today ended up getting pink eye when I woke up.  Been to the Dr. more in the last month then the last 5 years and I still have to go back on Friday for my first annual check up.  I'm also on my 3rd week of not smoking.  I'm still chewing and using the gum, but could only give up one bad habit at a time.

Sounds like you are getting hit on all sides. I know what you mean about being to the doctor a lot this year. Guess we are getting older. Hope you start feeling better. I look forward to seeing pics of your fish. I guess you haven't been doing any fishing or spring turkey hunting?
Title: Re: The World of Darth C

that does sound like a rough patch, Chad. For pink eye, I always use an eye wash containing boric acid along with a round or two of antibiotics. " I do hate that pink eye"

Good job on the not smoking. like you, the last time I stopped smoking, I started chewing and now, I do both.
Sunflower seeds, chewing gum, and toothpics seem to help if you want to try to kick the chew.

Well getting ready to head up to our deer hunting land this morning.  Went to the clinic this morning for blood tests, carry over from my last friday appointment.  Got food supplies at walmart and now getting ready to pick up the girls from daycare, yep dad's taking them up there for the weekend, should be interesting.  We have to move the outhouse and did a new hole for it, do some clean up and just check to make sure everything is fine from the winter.  Also have to bring back a load of wood for camping this year.  Tomorrow is our opening day of fishing up here, will be the first time in a long time I won't be heading out.  Barb needs some alone time to finish up her final paper for her night class.

Well its time to update this.  Been a busy summer so far and its just started.  Went camping over memorial weekend, a little cool but alot of fun.  Been just swamp at work, being forced to work overtime at hospital guarding prisoners, really boring.  Seems like I've been at work more then home and when I'm home have not much energy to do anything.  My dad decided its time to buy a newer boat, so I'm selling mine and putting that money towards the new boat.  It was tough this past week, since there were alot of boats we were looking for on craigs list in our price range, but couldn't go and see them because I was on call all this past week.  Found a real nice one close to home, but there are 2 other guys going to look at it before us and the first guy is driving 700 miles from Canada to see it.  Can't believe he is going that far and not going to buy it.  So you can see have not had too much time to be around and the summer is just beginning.

Well today we picked up our mini van from getting the rear brakes and rotors replaced.  $400 later seems to be braking better.  Heading out to my nieces graduation party.  Tomorrow we head to our amusement park for the day.  Hoping to get the new boat out this week, planning on going fishing next saturday.  I lost my lien release for my boat, so now its going to be awhile before I can sell that until I get another one to replace it.

Well, its been quite awhile since I updated this.  Been busy getting the girls back into school getting used to that schedule again.  Been doing a little hunting and fishing and camping.  Fall is finally here temps are barely getting into the 50's.  Work is about the same.  Yesterday was a real bad day at work, 2 of my fellow co-workers ended up have to shoot and kill a man with a gun outside of the court house.  At least neither of them were hurt, so our unit is kind of in the dumps right now.  I was out of the area when this happened, so I was fortunate in that sense, but knowing what they must be going through now, it can't be very easy.

It does hit a little close to home, when people you know are involved in something like this.  On another note we leave on Thursday morning for Disney World again.  Coming back next tuesday.  We were planning on going in Jan, but they had some really good deals during this time so we bumped it up.  By doing so we saved about $800.  The only downside was the short notice, so we didn't get as many dinner reservations as we wanted.  The cool thing is we have kept it a secret from the girls and are planning on waking them up and asking them if they want to go to Disney World and see their reaction.

I am sure that, that will build a special memory for them to look back on. Isn't that what life is all about, those special memories.    Speaking from experiance in relation to your weeks past events, you learn to appreciate those little things even more.
