Here is my "Hasbro style" AT-Hauler finished. For a lot more pictures:

If you're building an AT-Hauler from my plans, the above link has images showing updates and tips on finishing and painting your toy.

If you want to kit-bash your own AT-Hauler Pilot figure from my design:

This is a prototype for my take on the Imperial AT Hauler from Solo. It's made from cardboard (Amazon boxes), paperboard, wood coffee stirrers, toothpicks, and clear plastic from a food container. It's held together mostly with tape, which allows me to make adjustments and tweaks during this test-build stage.

Unlike the 1-18 scale U-wing I designed and built last year,  this AT Hauler is a handheld toy. The original vehicle has two pilot seats, but my AT Hauler is a single-seater. It is 1-42 scale (which is also the same scale of Hasbro's U-wing for 3.75" figures). The length of the Hauler's arms is 18".

It features a claw mechanism to grab, hold and release Hasbro's AT-DT walker. I don't own this walker toy, since it hasn't been released yet. But the claw is designed to fit around the cab of the AT-DT with a figure seated in it.

Another toyetic feature: The catwalk is held in place by the claw mechanism. So you can remove the catwalk and use it as a separate playset component.

Like my 1-18 scale U-wing, I intend to release the templates and building plan photos for this AT Hauler for free.

I decided to release photos of what I've made so far -- in case Hasbro announces their own AT Hauler for 3.75" figures later this week at San Diego Comic Con. If they do, I may stop work on my version, and release plans for what I've designed so far.

very cool stuff. makes no sense why Hasbro didn't make this in the Solo line. I mean  they offered only the falcon in different scales? then only mid-sized vehicles?

yours is soo well assembled it looks just as good as a production prototype. Going to have to try your plans at some point.

Thanks for sharing. cannot wait to see it painted.

That's a really great looking proof of concept, and seems perfectly in line with a reasonable Hasbro scaling.

Your cardboard projects never fail to impress! I really like the concept of the AT Hauler and its reception by fans seems to be very good, too! I might work with cardboard for future projects as well. Back in the days I used mostly shoe boxes to build houses for my playmobil figures.
It's amazing how you even include movable parts in your models! This prototype looks very promising!
Is there any reference material besides online resources, yet? I got the official book of SOLO by DK and must say, I'm quite disappointed by it.

I'm looking forward to seeing this project continue!

UPDATE:

I'm still here and working on this! Right now, I'm finishing up the decal sheets...

I recently bought the Hasbro AT-DT Walker toy. So I've been testing and refining the claw design of my AT-Hauler to grab and carry it.

Hoping to get a Rio Durant figure. Would like to see if he can sit in the pilot seat that I designed and inside head of the AT-Hauler. But things might be a little tight for him in the cockpit (just like a typical Hasbro SW vehicle for 3.75" ;D ).

Here's another quick update on the current progress toward the final build, which I hope to finish soon. I will release the templates, decals and building plans. And, yes, this AT-Hauler toy will be compatible with Hasbro's AT-DT Walker -- grabbing, carrying and releasing it, just as you see the AT-Hauler do in SOLO.

At last, here it is: my AT-Hauler for 3.75" Figures building kit.

This design is my own "toyetic" idea of what the Imperial AT-Hauler might have been like had Hasbro made one. It can interact with Hasbro's AT-DT Walker toy by carrying and releasing it just as you see an AT-Hauler do in SOLO. Its arms are 18" long. You can download the building plans for free to make your own.

This build kit includes templates and decals in PDF and in their original PNG format. The Photo Guide shows you how the pieces go together (and how to build certain elements, such as the pilot seat and winches from scratch), so you can flip through them as you build.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/k3y70hbgcyq5c1k/AT-Hauler_Kit.zip/ (https://www.mediafire.com/file/k3y70hbgcyq5c1k/AT-Hauler_Kit.zip/)

Later in the coming months, I plan to post lots of photos of this AT-Hauler painted and with the decals applied to it. In the meantime, here are photos of it in its natural cardboard glory.

Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Solstice, Kwanzaa, Friendsmas, Life Day and New Year!

This AT-Hauler is made with corrugated cardboard (Amazon boxes), paperboard (cereal, snack boxes), coffee stirrers, toothpicks and a coffee cup sleeve. The only plastic parts are the cockpit window (from throwaway packaging for a sandwich), cylinders for the winches and some detailing on its back plate (both from bendy drinking straws). You probably have most of these materials already in your home or office.

And it's held together with white glue -- the cheap stuff that grade school kids use. No other adhesives were used. Masking tape was used to temporarily hold glued pieces together until the glue dried and removed.

What a gift of an update! The details are coming along very well! Using only cardboard and wood is impressive! My favorite image is the last one! The allusion of Disney/Hasbro gave me a great time! That's a great choice for your logo! I'm excited to see how the AT Hauler is finished.

Best wishes & a Happy New Year!

Here's a sneak preview of my current paint progress. Here's the main body of the Hauler fully painted and with its decals and plating detail pieces applied. All that is left to do here is to glue on the cockpit window:

Someone has been in touch with me -- he's making a Hauler from my plans. And he's adding lights underneath the arms! (I'm not doing this to mine, but I designed the kit so that it's versatile enough to allow for customizing like this.)

Someone is building his own AT-Hauler using my plans -- from PLASTIC.

Like a proud parent :D, I'm sharing some photos here of his current progress. Rob Brown looks to be well on his way to owning what I will personally regard as the first Real Toy version of my AT-Hauler toy design. (I consider the one I made out of cardboard to be a "proof of concept" because it's not plastic.)

I hope Rob's work inspires other Star Wars toy fans to try making their own AT-Hauler. Rob said this is his first time building something out of a plastic -- which I find hard to believe!

Technical note: This is not 3D-printed. Rob is using plastic sheets instead of cardboard sheets to cut out pieces and glue together. And he's reusing the pilot seat from a Hasbro Y-Wing.

I agree! That's pretty awesome! Last year I also bought some polystyrene plates. I'm going to build a Desert Skiff with them. Friends of mine build incredible things with it, too, and recommended to me to use these plates.
It's impressive how nice and clean Rob cut and put the parts together! It's looking great so far!

I was going to comment on your project anyway to ask you how you made the packaging design? I love your mocckup and was going to make somethig similar for my NR-N99 Tank Droid Repaint in ROTS packaging. I probably need photoshop for such image design, right? I already asked a friend of mine who is a printing expert, but he said he wouldn't do it because it's licensed. I would have to design and print it myself for private use, then.

As said before I really like your ATH and I'm glad that other customizers use your plans, too!

Excellent work from both of you! Also, your cockpit looks fantastic with Rio!

Title: Re: Imperial AT Hauler "Star Wars: Solo" for 3.75" figures
Post by: WhillsScholar on March 17, 2019, 11:00:57 AM
Hi, Philipp, thanks for your comments!

The AT-Hauler toy box isn't high resolution, so it is not suitable for actual printing. I threw it together quickly for fun -- cutting-and-pasting graphics from pictures of actual boxes of Hasbro SOLO vehicle toys, adding and adjusting new pictures, and new text. But if I wanted to, I could probably use the image file I created and rebuild it with higher quality image sources. It was created using Paint.NET, a free image editor for Windows.

My advice if you want to do a Vintage style box: If it's for a large vehicle, get a cardboard project board which is white on one side. These are tri-fold presentation boards that kids use for science project displays. They're cheap and readily available. Print the sheet at FedEx Office on their large-format self-serve printers. The large Vintage boxes are white on the outside, and what is essentially one large color sticker is stuck to two sides of it -- on the front and along the top edge. (Study the Vintage Star Wars Hasbro and classic Kenner large vehicle boxes and you'll see and understand what I'm describing here.)

For smaller boxes, the boxes are just paperboard (like used for cereal boxes). You can spray-glue the color printout onto a large sheet of paperboard. It's the cardboard container inside that supports the outer package.

If you use the self-serve large printers at FedEx Office, then you won't have to deal with any copyright concerns. (You just stick your USB flash drive containing your image file into this printer.) But even if you have a FedEx Office employee do the job, and a concern is raised by them, you can rightfully say this is just for your own use as a hobby, or say you are a design student and this is an example you need to put together for your portfolio. But for the most part, they typically won't care.

Rob finished building the gantry and claw. I'm especially impressed to see how he has attached the claw to the main body of the Hauler. In his words:

"Got the Claw finished and mounted. I came up with a way to make it removable for painting purposes later. It locks in under a removable plate. Even used Hasbro/Kenner screws salvaged from something else."

His AT-DT patiently waits...

Update on Rob Brown's AT-Hauler he's making with plastic sheets. He has taken the decals from my kit and very effectively used them as templates to literally raise the level of surface detail. Every angle of this is looking like an actual toy!

As far as I'm concerned, his is about to be the first "real toy" (plastic) version of the AT-Hauler that Hasbro never made!
