in the cockpit of the phantom the pilot sat forward and on the left and the RIO (for want of a better term) sat in the back and to the right  and the entrance a hatch in the underside with a small footplate lift

LOL. Now I am not saying to get rid of what we have so far. Just do some more scenes, perhaps show some landing craft deploying the walkers with some armed escorts. Kind of like they expanded the OTC before.

since i was small my imagination wondered how they got those big walkers on hoth since we never saw the destroyers land , until we saw ep2  it answered my long search on "can at-ats fly?" theory
