Title: Kelcken's customs
Post by: kelcken on June 05, 2013, 09:26:40 PM
First mock up of a new diorama, first time doing one with styrofoam! The pain seems to be kind of weird on it, but we'll see how it turns out!!

Nice, looks like you know what your doing with Styrofoam even if this is your first time using it. On the front page.

Thanks most of the problems have been sticking the pieces together. I tried regular glue but that didn't hold, superglue basically melted it, and I tried low temperature hot glue, but no luck there either.

Ended up using toothpicks, with tape underneath and on the back just to give it some extra support.

"Holdout"

Captain Fordo and his men have been shot down behind enemy lines, and have been fighting to hold the extraction zone until they can be rescued.

This shot is included so you can see all of the finer details. It was designed to be viewed in a darker setting, so it is hard to show everything off in a picture.

Wow, it really looks great with those figures in it.

I was wondering how you got those sections together. Toothpicks is one thing I thought of too. Nice idea with the thape too.

What did you end up covering the foam with if I may ask?

Thanks!

I did two layers of charcoal gray, and then a black wash. Then another coat of gray, and while it was still wet I put a thin coat of black on to blend it all together.

The texturing on the walls and floors was created by running the tip of a knife back and forth.

White glue works good for holding styro together, also silicone caulk works but both take about 24hrs to cure. Enamel paint will eat styrofoam but acrylic paint wont.

Sneak peek at what's coming in the next couple of weeks.

Adding on to the "Holdout" diorama, extending it to be a part of the town square!

The Bounty Hunter Telana Rios prepares for the Great Hunt, an event which will drag her across the galaxy, in her mission prep room on board the Skulldancer

I was hoping for the screens to be a little bit more translucent, but I kind of like how they came out. I painted some plastic left over from some packaging cards, but I would love to have some ideas on how to improve.

A holographic guardian keeps watch over Telana's gear, and the lockbox is voice coded, as well as having a retinal scan.

I really want to make a whole ship, but it would have to be HUGE in order for it to all be proportionate. I hate how small the official ships are. Maybe one day I'll make an attempt.

Not sure how I missed these comments, but thanks guys!

Started working on something the other day with a concept of a Jedi temple loading dock, but it has evolved into a Cantina or nightclub entrance. Still in the mock up phase, have no idea how it's gonna turn out!

Can't wait to see this hit with some paint...I like the arrangement of pieces.  Nothing beats making stuff like this from junk!  Nice, creative work.

Unfortunately no! I had not seen this reply until just now, sorry for taking so long to reply! I sort of lost my drive on it, and haven't gotten back into it. But thanks for the kind words, everyone!

I do have a quick base that I made for Odan-Urr. I imagined it as him protecting an ancient Sith holocron that Exar Kun is attempting to take.
