Title: What kind of paint do you use?
Post by: Clonehead on June 11, 2009, 03:34:31 PM
I got asked today by a member what kind of paint I use on my customs and thought it would be nice if we had a place where we could compare notes on what we used and what works best for what applications.

I will start out with what I use.
I use Testors, Pactra, Model Master, and Floquil brand acrylic paints with the last two being my favorite because of their ease of application, ability to work well with other brand paint, and versatility of colors available.

All of these brands are owned by the Testors corp and I don't know if pactra is still around.

testors acrylics.  Basically because that's the only thing I have access to here and I am a stickler about paying for shipping costs on stuff like that over the internet...

Thanks for starting this Clonehead, you beat me too it =)

I use a varity of paints depending on the application.

Krylon Spray Paint: Used as base/primer for large vehicles and some characters. Sticks very well, and works well with other acrylic paints

Polly Scale Railroad Paints: Used on everything, I love this stuff and it sticks to all plastic types very well.

Tamiya Acrylics: First real "acrylic" paints used, lots of colors though doesn't stick well to type of plastic used to make action figures. Uses a thinner which causes it to break strip itself if you try to layer.

Floquil Railroad Enamels: Very sticky paint, much better than Tamiya though I only really use the black.

Testors Enamels: My very first paint set, which I used on almost everything. Sticks well, but switching to Acrylics was night and day.

Craft Acrylic Paint: Good for some applications because it's inexpensive, but not good for detail work.

I also have a robust set of brushes from natural to synthetic hair all in multiple sizes.

Here is a picture of my old work area from about 5 years ago when I was "Single" . My new work area is the kitchen table :|

Here is a great site that got me started: http://www.starwarsmodels.com/techpaint.html

Nice work station you had there, Sten! Yep, I don't like tamiya paints for that reason. I had the same trouble using that stuff on military models for the same reason.
