Title: WIP Action Force Jeep - "Z-Force '73" project
Post by: Wookie-Balls on July 15, 2012, 11:36:25 AM
I thought that is was about time to start one of these threads!

Now I've restored quite a few vintage Kenner vehicles, however I've never attempted a full-on custom ship before.

Well here's my first, influenced by Dalmont's custom Action Fleet T-Wing, here's my 3.75" version...

Clearly still a very early WIP - I'm quite happy with the build so far, I just need to get some plasticard to finish it off.

I've utilised a lot of Darth Optimus'
'Wonderful Medical Greeblies' to try and disguise the standard X-Wing fuselage.

More pics soon...

Wb Out!!

Really excellent project WB!

Personally I think that the old X-Wing fuselage is so un-X-wing like I wouldn't worry too much about disguising it. I think it's the perfect base for this type of custom.

Obviously looking forward to seeing this progress.

Hi Guys!

Wow thanks for the really nice feedback for my T-Wing build so far. Some of you are extremely experienced shipbuilders and this is my first actual custom ship - so your words mean a lot to me!

Finished the build today and I've got my base coat on...more painting and custom decals to follow...

Guys quite a few of you have replied on this thread now and I just wanted to say 'thank you' to all of you!

This was a first for me, customising a ship rather than just restoring a vintage piece. Dalmont gave me the inspiration and Darth Optimus the parts!

A lot of you are experienced custom ship builders LE, H94 and others and your work was an inspiration - as was Barry's / Jay's/ Incom's awesome paint apps! Thanks for the overly kind things that you have said about my T-Wing.

Work is going off the charts right now so I have less time than I'd like to post on this thread and your countless excellent personal ones!

Anyhoo - amongst the moments of madness I hope to get a few seconds to play with my paints / glue / Greeblies.

Ever wondered what a Classic Trilogy SW version of one of these would look like?

Hi again!

Here's the first WIP pics of my Rebel Long Range Desert Recon Speeder and scouts...

I'm hoping that eventually I'll have a third Rebel Scout on a speeder bike to form a display with this vehicle.

I'll be producing my own water slide decals to finish the vehicle off and it will be mounted on flying stands!

More soon...

I can't believe how awesome your work is!!  I would love to have either version.  Let me know if you would be up to a build for me and what it might cost.  It would be the best addition to my Star Wars collection by far.  Thanks for the great pictures.  Since I've been looking at this site and all of the custom creations, I'm going to give it a go hopefully sooner than later, and you are a great inspieration with the attention to detail you show in your work.  ()rr

Hey RossBo70 a PM is a private message (check the top of your page.) Are you based in the States?

Anyways...I wasn't sure where to post this at first, but I guess the vehicle section is best!! These are pics from a M.A.S.K Condor and Brad Turner that I've just completed. The vehicle had some paint rubs repaired and a full set of new decals. Brad had his Mask cut down and a repaint (over some really bad marker work I did as a kid!!!) Enjoy...

Hey DO

The Powerloader is from the Kenner Aliens line and the APC is a GI Joe RHINO.

Am quite annoyed at myself as I did own a load more MASK toys but in a mad moment I sold them all on the 'bay! May need to track down a Thunderhawk again. However I do still have my vintage Optimus Prime almost ready to restore as well!

Thanks for watching!

Broken fender

I bought a replacement OP from EBay and did a total take down. Sadly as I haven't found a decent chrome paint I've used silver and a gloss varnish. However strangely enough he now looks more like his cartoon version!

I was really surprised by the quality of engineering that went into these early TFs, unlike today's efforts which are normally just ball joint sockets, swivels and kibble!! I'm mean look at these shots of OP's arms

I've restickered the whole cab, replaced missing parts like Roller, missiles, trailer door, fists and rifle. Photos to follow tonight!!

Thanks as always,

Ray

Nice restoration on this!

If you need a chrome spraypaint, try Rustoleum "Plastic" brand, I think the color is called "Gloss Silver"  or "metallic silver" - I got it at Home Depot in the states - it is an acrylic glossy silver that *should* match Primes smokestacks.

Also Krylon has an enamel spraypaint I've used many, many times on vintage TFs, Takara, and Bandai stuff to fix vac-plated toy parts.  It works great but it *will* react with some plastics, especially the cheaper model-kit type, so try it out on a scrap piece first.  Worked great on old Takara Diaclone stuff but reacted badly with some vintage Bandai parts.

You did a great job on this guy, he looks really clean and nice!

Thanks FE, I shall have a good look for those paints here in the UK! Feels good to have completed OP after all these years of him laying in a dust covered box up inside the loft! He is back on display with my other Autobots now...

Thanks for the FP Tamer :)

And thanks to you guys as usual! It seems that every day I get a new a crazy idea for a custom project...

Well here's today's!

I'm having some building work done at the moment and to facilitate this I've had to clear out my garage. In doing so  I found my four Action Fleet Rebel Star Fighters! "So what?" you may say.

Well you all know that I can now produce my own vintage decals and water slide transfers, so what I'm going to do is this!

Repaint and slightly mod the AF ships, print mini versions of the vintage kenner decals!!!

Yes that's right - rather than go with ultra realistic paint jobs these guys are going to look like shrunken versions of their 1970s-1980's cousins!!!

Yeah I'm a bit odd, I know...I also like Ez Cheese...

A long time ago in a galaxy far away there was the 1970's (just ask a few of us about them if you're too young to remember!) bad hair, good rock music and other assorted awesomeness, including my favourite era of SW toys!

I was going to junk a few Action Fleet ships I found laying about - instead I decided to retro them up! Here is the first...

The paint job is nice and simple - no washing or dry brushing needed! The decals are actual scaled down copies of the Kenner originals and produced as water slide decals by my own hand! The Y-Wing is next, thanks for looking!!!

Oh, just a sweet idea, and so very well done! I bet Hasbro would be able to sell a few of those if they produced them. I really like the signature black laser cannons, it makes the transformation instantly recognizable.

PS, I had better feature this on the Front Page before Tamer gets his grubby hands on it  ;)

Love the retro look on that X-Wing, Ray! Will you also tackle the TIE Bomber? I just love the fact that the Die-Cast TIE Bomber is such an incredibly rare item, especially a carded one ;)

Thanks Art ole buddy! And H94 thanks for the FP!

I plan to eventually retrovert the following...

B-Wing
A-Wing
Y-Wing (next)
Snowspeeder  (need to buy)
Millenium Falcon (need to buy)
Slave-1 (need to buy)

I'm not going to tackle the Imp fighters as they panels are moulded so the Kenner wing decals wouldn't really work :(

And Mr B - once I get my hands on a pair of vintage Vader TIE fighter wings I'm going to tackle a Vintage Kenner 3/34" sized TIE Bomber!!

Here's the next of my mini Kenner/AF crossovers the Y-Wing

This one was far more challenging than the X-Wing due to the large number of small decals and the hollowing out of the tails. (In retrospect I should have taken more time with these!)

Still she's done and I'm almost happy with her! Next up? Snowspeeder I guess!!

Well I've been cracking on with my latest Action Fleet Retro Project...

I've now completed the X-Wing and Y-Wing, next up is the Snowspeeder. I loved the Kenner Toy as a kid and after the hard work on the Y-Wing this one is shaping up to be nice and easy! Just got the decals and some minor paintwork to do...

I've also managed to get my hands on a few more pieces so expect this project to include

X, Y, A and B wings
Snowspeeder
The Falcon
Slave-1
AT-AT
AT-ST
Landspeeder

I've even got a few spares left over now, including a 'duel pack' ROTJ Falcon with General Lando and Rebel Commando, also a T16 Skyhopper if anyone fancies a trade?

I'll finish the Snowspeeder later today :)

An Action Fleet Snowspeeder complete with retro paint job and mini Kenner vintage style decals!

I'm really happy with how this little ship came out, all that remains is to paint the harpoon gun, landing skid and varnish the whole thing...

What do you want to see next, a Falcon, Slave-1, B-Wing, or A-Wing in this mini retro style?

Hiya!

Been busy with work recently but here's my latest AF loot that will eventually be retro fitted as mini Kenner!

Some of this stuff will be spare tho - such as the T-16 Skyhopper and the Cinema Duel Falcon

(No stand or mini figs)

(No stand, but exclusive mini figs included)

And also these loose mini figures

Here's my AF wanted list

1.) AT-AT display base
2.) ANH Leia mini figure
3.) 2 x AF stand (normal type - both parts)

Let me know if you want to make a deal - if you can supply the three required bases and a Leia you get both the above ships and all minifigs in the last picture!!!!!

And stand by for more Mini-Kenner goodness!!

Hey guys,

Here's my latest Mini Kenner Vintage AF crossover....

The Millenium Falcon, complete with a set of mini Kenner decals. Here's a WIP shot

Final pics tomorrow!

Thanks for stopping by...

Ok here's the Falcon (minus some minor paintwork)

I masked off the cockpit and side panels of the ship (to simulate the slighter softer and lighter plastic parts on the full size Kenner toy) the rest of the ship was repainted to match the colour of the 1970's toy.

I cut down the top cannon and removed the bottom one for a better match to the Kenner ship. I still need to paint the cannon and landing gear though!

On the back I've resized the engine stickers to allow them to fit into the groove at the rear of the AF toy...

And the outside of the ship has a full set of hand cut, shrunken Kenner stickers laser printed onto water slide decal paper.

Over all - once again I'm pleasantly surprised at how the final AF ship came out!

Next up? Some Walker action....

Merry Christmas to all Yarders and your families!

Post by: Wookie-Balls on April 24, 2013, 07:21:11 AM
First update here in ages!!

I haven't got round to finishing that speeder yet by here is something else at the  WIP stage...

Here in the UK before GI Joe we had 'Action Force' made by Palitoy (who also held the UK Star Wars licence)

Originally AF was split into SAS Force, Q Force (sea), Space Force and Z Force (Infantry)

I've decided to take an AF Z Force jeep and mod it using modern Joes to represent a more realistic take on Z-Force based on the British Army circa the early 1970's!!

Eventually this will be part of a dio with the jeep and Z-Force troops including a radio operator and a section gunner with GPMG.

I'm modding the vests and pouches to look like British flak jackets an 58 pattern webbing of the era and I've tracked down the correct 1/18 rifles (or kit bashed them!) for use with the figures!

More soon,

Ray

I especially like your AF vehicles. Very well done on all of your vehicles, mate.
I am also a fan of the OT AF, and have several that I adore. I have the smaller and the larger Falcon. The larger Falcon was purchased when released for $30 US. I heard, I think, back then that they made an electronic one as well for $50, but back then you could get the 3 3/4 scale for the same price. I love the larger version for AF, and wired and weathered mine about a year ago for my Echo Base interior (that I keep procrastinating on) as well as a Y Wing and X Wing (no wiring on these, just weathering).
I originally passed on the TIE Defender, but later found one at a flea market and purchased for the original retail price of $10. I have always passed on the AF Super Star Destroyer (which is always expensive on ebay as it's rare) because I never liked the scale in comparison of the AF Star Destroyer. I never sell toys, and I am totally against profiting from SW, so when I see the Super SD around, I just usually pass the info on. Saw it only a few times (original retail, original retail clearance sale, and in a comic shop). I never buy things to resell. I'm just weird like that.

Sorry for the blather. Great work, Ray!

Barry
