Hi everyone,
I'm a bit shy as this is my first post >:D (thanks to Doc Outland who told me about this place).
Ok, here's where the fun begins...

Very nice,
Welcome to the Shipyards.

Hangerbay94! Welcome to the shipyards!
This is a really great dio and I am glad that you showed it to us.
Man, that Falcon turned out sweet, also!
I have seen your stuff before and cant wait to see the next one that you show us.
-
good to see you mate greetings from a fellow inductee ..lol

Thanks so much Gentlemen,
It's very exciting to find a new site, I'm going to have a good nose around.
Thank you for making me feel so welcome!

So - how did you make that glossy floor?
-
So - how did you make that glossy floor?
First off Hi Doc!
Oh man was it hard to apply.
Firstly I had to find the material, it's called Mactac and it's hard to find (I could only find it sold in rolls. and I've still got a load of it im my garage (Cost £40 a roll). It's basically a very thin self adhesive vinyl. It's very sticky and prone to static when trying to lay it. basically it's bloody hard to lay without trapping air, it's like applying a huge screen protector. Luckily the fact i've got so much of it means that if I make a mistake I just cut some more and start again.
-
Very nice with niub-niub like decals ^^
-
Welcome !!!!!!..and i must say very nice dios !...top stuff..
-
Oh man was it hard to apply.
Wow... suppose that's a better result than gloss black paint covered by plastic wrap. ;D
I keep thinking I'm going to try black foamcore with a thin sheet of plexi from a cheap poster frame - suitably cleaned and polished - to see what sort of look I get.
-
Try plexi with paint on bottom side. Nice render too ;)
-
Both those ideas would work.
Good morning to the both of you.
Or is it afternoon, there, Franck?
-
End of afternoon, 16h54 :P
-
Wow, what an awesome dio! Welcone to the Yards! Daggone, that is nice.
-
so pretty!
-
Wow, I'm amazed at sll of the comments, thank you very much.
I'll get some more images together of more of my stuff very soon, in the meantime, I'm off round the forum.

Thanks so much for the response to this diorama project, you may not appreciate this but I don't think I would have continued making this stuff had it not been for the kind encouragement I receive.
I'll post some more images very soon.
Best regards,
Hangarbay94

It seems to me you used foamcore and niubniub decals, excellent, but expensive ::)
It think you would try to make the floor hole in the hangar, it's annoying to do,but look at mine, and you will see that it changes all 8)
-
Oh man, you can't stop now! Daggone that would be like recalling every walker made. LOL. All kidding aside, I love the way this looks, very realistic. I would be a shame not to finish it. It is stuff like this that has made me think about pursueing my own diorama dreams.

Cmon now, don't tease little ole Tamer.

Yes, it would have been good to make the floor lift, but my intention was to make the whole thing flat pack for storage, plus I wanted to make the floor out of mountboard rather than foamcore as it wouldn't get damaged if walked on. Believe it or not, the whole hangar diorama folds flat in a matter of seconds, there is only a small foamcore section consisting of a corridor and blast door, which attaches with Velcro.
Even though I get a huge buzz out of buildig this stuff, they need to be child friendly as it is intended to be played with. The dio's also have to take up as little storage space as possible as it needs to fit in with my wife's wishes in not wanting the house to be a perminant Star Wars shrine (as would be my wishes).
-
Both of those options make the construction a bigger challenge, indeed. Hats off to you, buddy. Those are both feats in engineering as well as was building the thing in the first place.

Indeed....
I've been looking at the amazing Death Star Franck is making and I made something similar a year or so ago, it was my first foray into Dirama making. It was a modular system made up of sections that could be stacked in numerous different combinations, the hangar base and side walls were reversable and could turn into the Trench. As a toy it was a great idea, and Hasbro could make a mint making something similar using industrial methods, but in reality, on mine the decals peel off easily and the whole thing is a bit too fragile for everyday play (I have a 4 year old and a seven year old, so anything I make needs to pass the ultimate play test).
It comes out of it's box occasionally but it needs to be stored in the garage as it's so bloody huge, if I left it out, the gloss floors quickly attracted massive amounts of dust. I vowed that if I was going to create anything else, it needed to be tougher and more child friendly, after all, I love making the stuff and taking pictures, but my kids are the ones who play with it all. I think Franck is taking the idea a step further and is certainly making a better job of it in terms of the design. You'll probably see elements of my set used in a forthcoming photonovel.
Here was my Death Star 1:

As a consolation for having to store the playset in the garage I quickly made a miniture hangar bay for my eldest for his bedside shelf.

Super killer stuff, buddy. I think it's great that you make this stuff for your kids.
-
Daggone, awesome stuff again. I love the way you make this stuff modular, able to be torn down and stored. I too wish hasbro would make something like this with thier production capacity. You make this stuf for your kids, can you adopt me?

Get in lline Dude...Get in line ;D

As far as thr modular idea goes, I am most proud of a modular playset i made for my eldest sone for his 6th Birthday, and it's possibly his and most of the neighbours kids (judging by the number of times I catch them playing with it) favourite. If you are old enough to remember Starbird, it was inspired by the cardboard base that accompanied it.
I'm probably most proud of this one (apart from the Landing pad) as it's totally my own creation...If you don't mind me going off topic for a moment I'd love to share the images with you!

Very nice, indeed. I am old enough to remember Starbird and it's shorter counterpart. I used to have a Starbird ship and kind of remember the cardboard landing pad but didn't have it.
Awsome stuff, man!
-
whoa
Umm, are you looking for a new kid? I promise I'll clean my room. .. sometime.
Dude, these are so freakin sweet, is the back of that first set also the trench?

Oh no, even better...do you want to see whats on the reverse of the 1st Death Star shown at the top of the post?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm, is that a trick question?
Yes!

Ok, you asked for it...new post iminent...

can I have this?
I'll take good care of it, let it live next to my terrordrome.

Wow, feel free to get off topic more often. Where do I go to stand in line?

Last count, 3,164...
We could book in a play-date, you could bring round your vehicles and figures, I'll set up the playsets. I've got a wood at the back of my garden which is where my kids play with the endor stuff. At the moment anyone lucky enough to walk round the back of our house will find a legion of the Emperors finest troops guarding the place....

Ahh those were the days...

And there it is. I so wanted that playset. As I remember, that little wheeled cargo carrier held the removable starbird engine insert. Man, that was a cool toy that held a mercury switch inside that would alter the sound effects of the ship as you pointed the nose up or down. Like kids need a toy with a mercury switch.
I fondly remember that ship.
-
This thread is great! That playset is so cool!
-
Once again, thanks guys!
Here are some more images of foamcore models I've been making:

Sorry again if I'm going a bit off topic, I know this isn't Starship medeller, but I just wanted to show it to you...From here on in it's Star Wars.
-
That's some cool stuff, again. I believe that you sure did capture the look that you were going for.
Good job on that stuff.

Reminds me a bit of Neptune station from G-Force (Gatchaman). I loved that cartoon as a kid.
