So I scored a vintage x-wing at a con last weekend for $5 But its missing all four guns, the hatch for the cockpit, and the stickers are all torn up and Im not sure what the electronics do, but I dont think they work anymore either. Still pretty sweet for an x-wing.
But I cant bring myself to touch it... I almost dont even want to clean it... lol sounds crazy i know. I bought it thinking either i'll fixt it up because i dont have an xwing yet, or ill try to make a sweet custom. But I saw the 1978 copyright date and I was thinking about the history behind it... and I cant touch it... I guess im looking for help, that push to make me wanna fix it lol.
Am I the only one who gets like this?

"Wow, a classic! What a beauty! Well, she could be, with a little attention. Or... I could hot-rod her up... Aw, man..."
No, you aren't alone. 8)

Restore that puppy to her former glory!! I've got two out of the three vintage variants and both have been restored to their former glory!!

Im fairly new at this, and I just found out you can get the stickers that are suppose to go on it. I thought I was gonna have to paint them on. I was fine with that but now that I know this, it does make me want to restore it.

I have a whole thread in the vintage section about all the vintage restoration work that I've done (and continue to work on!) I've even done some commission work for folks! Have a gander here...

I love working with the vintage Kenner stuff, I find it really rewarding!

Here's my take:
I got a junker X-Wing a while ago at a convention. As I already had one in good repair and have no need to amass a fleet, I customized it. Well...I started anyhow. Right away I added greeblies and primed it and that's as far as I got.
In short, I'd mod it if I had one "original" to display.

Dude,
If it were in good condition I'd touch it, smell it, savor it and think back to the blissful days when everyone wore flares, had long hair and sideburns, sung "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony" and Star Wars was fresh and new.... (deep inhale of breath and long sigh....Ahhhh!!!
BUT
This thing is an old piece of plastic that's got parts missing.... man it's not Toy Story, the thing's not going to be pissed off if you turn it into a cool custom..... DO IT MAN!!!!
Oh and May the Force be with you! ;)

Mod it out man.
I modded one out for a co-worker in the late 90s (his childhood one)
and with a little styrene plate, paint, and a careful hand,
they look AMAZING.
For practice on that piece I remember I plated out a 90s one and tested paints- a lot of fun playing with the x_wing design and color schemes.
Give it a try, you can find a minty vintage x-wing later on.
