Title: Star Wars: The Battlefront Project - Pandemic BF I & II - EA/DICE BF I & II
Post by: Darth More on September 07, 2018, 02:17:11 AM
I've been playing around with this idea for a while now. And I think for better structure and overall view I dedicate an own topic to this project .

I grew up with Pandemic's STAR WARS Battlefront I & II released in 2004 and 2005. And there is no other video game that inspired me more for my Star Wars custom work than Battlefront II, including figures, vehicles and dioramas.

Be prepared for tons of reference material of in-game screenshots and custom figures!

A third part of this successful series was surrounded by mysteries, rumors and confusion. By 2008 a  gameplay teaser of the beta version was leaked online. Rumors were also confirmed that Free Radical Design had been developing Battlefront III, but eventually lost the license to publish it due to several "regularly missed deadlines" and the fact that Free Radical "could not devote sufficient resources to the game". It was later revealed that the game was technically done and ready to launch by 2008, but it never did. And then there was silence.

In 2013 EA DICE announced of well-known Electronic Arts announced that they aquired a license from LucasArts on E3. The colaboration was meant to last for several years.
In 2015 they released their STAR WARS: Battlefront to be followed by Battlefront II in 2017. More parts (and DLCs) to come for sure...

So let's cick off this project with a five-minute-custom!

I was inspired by a modded Old Republic era Space Assault in SWBfII and here it is:

Clone Marine (GAR)

- comes with the Battlefront Extreme (BfX) Mod for any standard Space Assault map of the Clone Wars era.
- received some nice improvements like better texture and stronger equipment with the Extreme Mod

Reference: in-game screenshots

My version is pre-installed in German, but further reference pics will also include English mods.

The above shot was the toughest one and I'm very happy it worked because the laser shots were not shown in the 'free camera' mode first. And I had to press 'forward', 'shoot' and 'ESC' and aim at the Pilot Droid at the same time - not the easiest task to do... ;)

All you need are three things:

Comment: I know this is a very easy custom to make, so nothing special really. But I thought it would be a great one to start this seperate project of mine with. Plus you know I love Clone Troopers and the Grand Army of the Republic.
I actually had the backpack and the DC-15 rifle in my fodder bin and was surprised and happy about that find!
I'm also going to make a mold for the backpack to cast it in resin and remove the three parts on the inside. Then, it will fit even better. Right now, the backpack is only fixed with tape.
I'll also add some slight weathering on the final version of the Clone Marine so that it looks exactly like in the reference pictures. I'm going to use one of my fodder Clones or one from tunghori...let's see.

I still it's a step back that Hasbro made new sculpts for the Clone Trooper Phase I & II as part of The Vintage Collection. Despite more articulation, they are also taller now and the joints are more fragile. I keep sticking to the ROTS #41 super-articulated Clone Trooper. It remains my top choice and favourite maybe also because it was the very first Clone Trooper I got at Toys "R" Us in New York back in 2005.
By the way have you heard that FAO Schwarz will return to Manhattan in November 2018?

Please, let me know what you think! I hope you can make one Clone Marine, too, of you like it!

I wish you all a great start into the weekend!

- "Sometimes all you need is the right parts."
- Indeed!
Thank you Tamer! Yes, I actually had the backpack and the DC-15 rifle in my fodder bin and was surprised and happy about that find!
I'm also going to make a mold for the backpack to cast it in resin and remove the three parts on the inside. Then, it will fit even better. Right now, the backpack is only fixed with tape.
I'll also add some slight weathering on the final version of the Clone Marine using one of my fodder Clones or one from tunghori...let's see.

Have a good weekend, Tamer! I hope things go well for you, too! You do an incredible job for all of us on here. Thank you for your constant and reliable support on here!

@Tamer: Thank you for the thumps up! I really enjoy being a member of this awesome community!

@Starchaser: Yes, absolutely! I just love the Battlefront series from Pandemic! I have only played EA's Battlefront once, yet, but took some reference pictures while my brother was playing. Talking about references: I've taken 315 MB of reference screenshots so far with about 600 KB for a single screenshot. I have countless Clone Troopers and different characters on my list and just cannot wait to realize them in 1/18 scale.
Thank you very much for your feedback, Starchaser! I hope to find the time to post my next custom, which is already done, soon!

That is a very interesting type of Clone Trooper.
I like the addition of original trilogy material into the Clone Wars era. It shows how the imperial army got their equipment.
Excellent work.
I'm looking forward to see many more Battlefront 2 custom figures.

Thank you for your feedback, Christoph! I've collected many reference shots so far and am still not done, yet. But I decided to take the final screenshots from all diffferent angles and in-action when I really takle that particular skin/character.
I really enjoy playing Pandemic's Battlefront. My brothers and I are really into it and the multiplayer co-op mode.
Sometimes they are a little annoyed and roll their eyes when I suddenly stop playing for a moment to think about my next custom idea or I just look at one specific detail on the map. These games are SO inspiring!

The Clone Marine could easily named Space Marine, too, but I guess that'd sound too much like Warhammer 40k. So let's call it Republic Space Marine...
By the way Galactic Marines of the 21st Nova Corps will also have a role in future projects.
So much more to come...

Thanks again and hope to talk to you, soon!

Clone Commander Vaks
          - 607th Legion -

         - "Commander Vaks was a Clone Commander assigned to the 607th Legion during the Clone Wars. He lead his soldiers alongside Jedi General Zyaus Hyaun. Together they lead their troops through battlefields on Rhen Var, Sullust, Yavin IV, Kashyyyk, Murkhana, Xagobah and Jandoon."
Source: me, there is no entry on Wookieepedia, yet...

This custom figure took me a little longer than 5 minutes. I also did a lot of research in advance, again. Most of the research went into playing the mod for SWBFII by Xavious. I dont share direct links on here, but can find this map pack on forums such as moddb.

Commander Vaks is one of my favourite Clone Commanders and characters to play in the custom Battlefront mods. One reason is the design, the other reason is his gun! It's just desperately overpowered. But to stay fair, the Seperatist forces have been lethally modified, too!
I shared a gameplay video of BattlefrontJD down below. He does a lot of great videos showing just the gameplay of the latest mods without comment.

So here are some screenshots for reference:

- figure: Galactic Marine (TAC 30-02)
- helmet: custom resin cast Galactic Marine
- gun: Chaingun (TLC SL-18 BARC Trooper, based on the accessory of the Clone Commander included in the TAC BFII multipack)

I used one of the Galactic Marines I got on eBay a few years ago for $2 each. You can see how I completed them after the jump:

http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10179.0

First, I filled the hole for the backpack with a light curing composite.

I washed all parts, dried and painted them with Citadel's primer "Imperial Primer". So as always - here is my "black series" edition of Commander Vaks:

Painting was a lot of fun! While working on Vaks I also watched some videos from FialaFernbrugg, which are most impressive and inspiring. Check them out on YouTube:

Comment: As aleady mentioned above I had started my research in Ocotber 2016. I had the idea to customize one of those incomplete Galactic Marines, I got from eBay, in the same year. Commander Vaks is just one of many upcoming projects. I have over 20 Galactic Marines to be completed and/or repainted. Too many ideas and just not enough time...
I thought my 900th post on here would be a nice occasion to FINALLY share this one, now. I did most of the painting in 2018. Initially I wanted to start this new topic with Commander Vaks, but then the spontanious idea to make a Clone Marine (Reply #3) made me to, instead.

I added a picture of all colors I used for Vaks. Still, I need to add a brown shade to make him look 100% accurate to the reference material. Also the black stripe on his back has a dark blue gloss in the game. I tried to recreate this effect, but wasn't successful. So before I add a final layer of clear coat, I'll have to fix this. Updates should follow, soon!

I'll make some more skins/units of the 607th Legion in the future. The Light Commando is up above my list. So stay tuned! I hope you enjoy my content. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comment section down below. Cheers!

Special thanks to customjedi, Starchhaser and FialaFernbrugg for inspiring me to finally share this project!

CloneTroopr, your customs are most impressive and inspiring to me! Thanks so much for leaving a comment here! Yes, most definitely! PANDEMIC's Battlefront is my most favourite videogame of all time! I modded and play it to the most extend. Do you have any wishes/suggestions for me what to customize next? My "Battlefront Project" folder contains 41 sub-folders so far...Vaks was just the 2nd one.

No problem!

Hm...the 501st Jet Trooper was one of my favorite designs from that game. Even the generic Jedi in the Order 66 Knightfall mission in the campaign would be cool to see as figures.

You can read my comment on your thread! I did think of updating the visor in metallic green, too, but I didn't think of using the super-articualted TAC SL version of the 501st Clone Trooper for it. So I will use it, now. Thank you for this great advice and inspiration!
I'll also look for some fodder to realize these Jedi skins, too!

On the weekend I got out my custom fodder and counted the figures I'm going to customize.
I would like to share these pics with you to show you how much potential there is just for Clone and Imperial Trooper customs!

I counted and came to exact 100 figures...I wasn't aware of how many I got during the last year alone! And I'm more than thrilled to customize more!

Here's a WIP shot from last night:

Started modifying and painting a green ARC Trooper and a Desert Combat and Survival (DCS) Specialist (completely made up). I was inspired by Commander Vaks to come up with this modified version of a Galactic Marine. Special thanks to FialaFernbrugg who sent me this hand drill! It works perfectly to modify rifles, blasters and cannons.

Clone ARC Trooper
Advanced Recon Commando

Out of the four different ARC Troopers of Pandemic's Star Wars Battlefront II, Hasbro have produced three of them so far: blue, red and yellow version.

At the moment I'm working on the fourth ARC Trooper of this set.

Actually I'm working on three Clone Troopers at once:
- Clone Jet Trooper (Phase I)
- Clone Desert Recon & Survival Specialist (DRS)

Here's a little teaser:

Since I got this ARC Trooper almost for free, I'm trying different colors & methods on it. I think the Sybarite Green goes best for the Phase I Jet Trooper, which I've been planning on doing for centuries, now.
Well, the Warpstone glow looks much better in the ARC, but isn't as "glowing" once it's dry...that's why I covered the original blue paint apps with a white primer on the left shoulder. I hope the green will stay lighter, then.
Most surprising to me is, that the torso of this ARC Trooper is actually WHITER than its limbs!
I might need to remove the paint with solvent, again and treat the limbs with some hydrogen peroxide, then.  But I'm also very happy how nice & shiny the white primer from Citadel looks on the helmet! Detailed pics are to follow!

I really like those ARC Troopers and their Phase I buckets. Which is your favorite ARC Trooper Figure to use for customs. I guess I can assume it is the one you have shown us here. I remember the great one that came in the Vintage Collection awhile back. Fordo?

Anyhow, great update, back to the front pages.

Thank you Starchaser! This idea came to my mind out of nowhere while I was thinking of more variations of the Galactic Marine.
Plus I'm a big fan of this Commander Bacara/Heavy Gunner helmet...so the next version is already in the works:

This could also be a Phase II ARC Trooper...

Thank you so much Tamer! That's a tough question though...Since I'm a big fan of red, it's probably the red ARC Trooper Commander from the TAC Order 66 Pack and Evolution Pack.
I had been wanting to make the green version for a long time though. They look great in any style and color I guess...

Yes, I agree! The VC54 ARC Trooper Commander represents ARC Commander Fordo from the original Clone Wars of 2003. This is one phenomenal action figure from Hasbro...

Thank you, Aude! Indeed, I’m glad I can takle some long planned projects from my list now!

I just fixed the shoulder joints of the 3 RCs. I used some plastic glue that also solved the paint and part of the plastic. If I could apply the regular (solvent free) all purpose glue this precisely, it’d be the perfect solution. I kept rotating the arms once in a while. And now the figures can hold their arms, again!

I also covered all parts that I don’t want to paint with wax. Clay also works fine. I think Grievous’ eyes look just fine. I cannot paint them better myself.

The helmet of the TAC Commando is too damaged to further use it. BUT I make a mold of it to use it for future damaged Commando helmet since several squads were eliminated on their first mission on Geonosis. So I’ll pimp up future Geonosis dios with those cheap casts. Already got an undamaged resin cast to replace his helmet...

Now, off to spray-painting outside as long as it doesn’t rain...

7 figures to add to “the black series”. All worked well, although I should’ve put all the small parts on toothpicks. Next time. I now proceed to dublicate Grievous’ chest plates. I got another TLC one which is missing them.

Sorry for all the posts by the way. My camera broke and I have to have the sensor repaired when the stores open, again. Have to take pictures with my cell phone now - with full storage - that’s fun, let me tell ya!

Tamer: Thanks for the frontpage! Yes, it worked sufficiently! Now the shoulder joints are nice and tight, again. They can hold their heavy duty weapons now. And thanks to the black base coat, the glue is not visible anymore - also because I removed any leftovers with a blade while it was still fluid.

Let’s see how all the picture madness works. I hope I’ll find the right order...

Started painting the Commandos. Found some perfect shades in Citadel’s assortment. Still have to mix some. Also continued painting the next NR-N99 tank droid as I painted the RC’s visor in the same metal color.

I had to clean a 4,300 square feet parking lot yesterday. That took me 7 hours and also kept me from painting. So here are just a couple quick w.i.p.s:

Have a nice Sunday everyone. I’m glad the forum is accessible, again. Thanks for your support, Tamer!

RC-1136: Thanks a lot for your comment, RC! Means a lot to hear that from you! You and Clonehead are the Commando experts on here. I do have the designs for these four. If you know the custom Republic Commando mod for Star Wars Battlefront II, you'll already know the Skins ;)
The problem I got with Citadel's assortment though is that it's either all or nothing. The specific shades worked perfectly for blue Snaggletooth, but I'm still missing the perfect shade of blue for the Medical Commando...same with the Chaos Commando. But stay tuned for their reveal, soon! I will mix some colors although I want to avoid that because they tend to be hard to reproduce.
I so need to go to the U.S. to take a close look at all the acrylic paints available there - AMerican designs = American shades of colors. They're all different a nuance.

Tamer: Thank you for your support! You sacrificed your precious day for all of us here. Online support requires much patience...always. Yeah, we cleaned the parking lot with a pressure washer and had to sweep away all the dirt immediately. It was pretty persistent...got a nice blister on my palm from the broom stick...

FialaFernbrugg: Thank you so much for your feedback! You will be happy with the result. The tank is finished and ready to be shared ;)

Starchaser: Thanks for coming by! I think so. I hope you'll like them. I figured out how I can achieve all the shades I Need. Just need to cast the backpacks in resin now…

Tactical Rescue Commando
--- TRC ---

All these fan-made addons and mods for Pandemic's original Battlefront II avaiable for free in some forums added so much to the variety and gaming experience of this already epic title. If I could program those features myself I would design a Trooper that looks like this. Got this Clone Heavy Gunner in a figure lot and while I was comparing and testing Citadel's colors I knew I wanted to give him a dark red Color (maybe blood red). After a year I finally got to paint him and spontaneosly added some more details in grey...hope you like my design of this Tactical Rescue Commando! And of course 7th Season of the Clone Wars inspired me to finally do this custom! Let me know what you think about it in the comment section down below!

Sorry for my late reply guys. I somehow forgot to answer on this topic. Here's a small update to my ROTS Clone Commander concept (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10186.msg219612#msg219612) with full image gallery. A big thanks for your feedbak and a shoutout to CloneTroopr (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=7528.msg219267#msg219267) for showing me how to embed an URL!

Tamer: Thanks for sharing this one on the frontpage, Tamer! I'm glad you liked this bucket. I think this was part of the way how Lucasfilm and Hasbro found a way to print money: trying different color combinations for Clone Troopers.

Starchaser: Thank you, buddy! The #41 Clone Trooper and all other versions based on it always remind me of the concept for Revenge of the Sith. It must've been a really exciting time for Lucasfilm to redo the Clone Trooper armor. Not only did they make a Phase II look, but they also decided to make Clone Troopers in more colors and different legions. Remember the concepts that never made it into the mvie? There are plenty and this color scheme of my totally made up TRC Trooper reminds me of that exciting time back then, too.

FialaFernbrugg: Thank you so much, bud! Your Clone Trooper customs have been a big inspiration for me - so a big thanks goes to you here!

Michiico: Thanks for leaving a comment, bud! Always appreciated! Back in 2005 I completely fell in love with Clone Troopers. Something we have in common ;)

Moronarama: Thank you so much for your feedback! I'm not 100% happy with the straight lines, but that's as good as I could get without masking tape. lol

General Grievous
--- Black Edition ---

One of my favorite videogames of all time is STAR WARS: Revenge of the Sith. My brother and I love playing the duel mode and co-op missions together. Sometimes we even fight each other with our eyes closed and see who wins at the end - just for fun. When both of us play as General Grievous, one of them has 4 red lightsabers. This lead me to an idea...

I then thought, why wouldn't I give Grievous a full repaint? As I was spray-painting the figure with Citadel's primer, I decided to make a black version of him:

Details:

Making of:

Here I show you how I turned General Grievous (TLC BD25) (http://rebelscum.com/TLC25grievous.asp) into this MOC "dark" version on black and red:

Before I spray-painted the figure with Citadel's black primer, I covered the eyes and  green metallic areas of his torso with wax because I wanted to preserve the gut section of his cyborg-suit:

Removing the wax again:

You can remove the wax with a tool when the figure is painted completely or after it's primed.
I went for the safe way and finished the paintwork before removing the wax:

Replacing chest-armor:

Well, I got this Grievous loose and incomplete on ebay for 2.80 Euro. I got it cheap because both chest-plates were missing. Would you have guessed that both chest-plates on this custom are custom made?

Sometimes parts have complicated areas to be casted or are just too fragile. The solution would be a mold at least 3 components. I had to take this 2-component mold apart just to make sure the part doesn't break. It wasn't my best mold anyway and I also used too much sculpting putty this time. But I could remove the lining by sanding it down. This silicone also looses detail when used more than once. It's only meant to be used once but I made several blasters with one mold. You can read more on that in my casting tutorial (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10633.msg213019#msg213019).

Unlike the rest of the figure, I painted the left chest-plate with vallejo's grey acrylic polyurethane primer, which I got just recently. The rest was spray-painted with Citadel's black primer.

If you want to make parts and accessories yourself, I got a tutorial for you (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10633.msg213019#msg213019).

Another custom project finished & ready to join the collection:

Lightsabers:

I used to buy about 24 Darth Vader figures on ebay from an Asian seller who offers them in lots of 10 for $2.89 each. That was a year ago, but he still has some in stock. By now he also offers the lightsabers seperately in different colors and shapes. You can find the links to his ebay store after the jump (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10179.msg221349#msg221349).

Reference Material:

By the time I finally got started with this project, I found out that meanwhile somebody had created a mod of General Grievous for the new Battlefront II game by EA/DICE. Well, sometimes different people have the same idea.At least I can assign this project to the Battlefront section now, although my concept is a little different.

Comment:

This project joined my list in Summer 2019. I prepared the figure along with my Republic Commandos, which are on my work bench as well! The lack of time to cast the chest plates caused further delay. I also need to cast the two different backpacks of the Republic Commandos before I can finish them. I messed up once and re-casted the right chest plate and lost another - more delay.
But I had some milliput putty for Darth Sion (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10186.msg221266#msg221266) left and decided to cast the missing armor-part while the sculpting clay was drying on Sion.

The mod for EA's Battlefront II was added in January 2020. So my concept was not based on this. But it's nice to see that someone else had the idea and added it to this video game. The new Battlefront has become a truly awesome game thanks to all the fans who modded it and added new maps and skins to the overall scarce game. DICE really could've done more right away, but that's a different topic.

So do you like all the red paint apps? Is it too much red on Grievous' head? Have you ever thought of a Dark Side version of Grievous? Let me know what you think about it in the comment section down below!

Starchaser: Thank you very much for your kind words! Now, I know one more word in English: splendid

Reading such a comment after 2 hours of editing pictures and posting this, is what makes it feel great! There's not a ton of feedback here, but the few active members on here share true quality. Your feedback is like a gem to me, I really do appreciate it a lot!

I'm still editing the text above and add some links, but I'm done with the pictures. I took all of them with my iphone, but the lens was a little greasy from my disinfectant so some are milky. That bugs me a little right now.

As said before, I got the idea while playing the Revenge of the Sith video game. Got this Grievous loose for cheap so I dared to customize it. General Grievous based on The Legacy Collection version goes for 15€ and above here in Germany. But I got three incomplete ones for less than 5€ each.

I'm quite happy how he turned out. Wasn't sure whether to paint the details on the side of his head in red, but it would be a pity to not highlight the details there. I knew I wanted to use a little red here and there, but mostly keep him black. The plates on the armor painted with humbrol's 27004 actually look like Beskar once polished with paper towels. But the idea was before The Mandalorian aired. In retrospect it would make sense that Grievous used Beskar for his armor - he always wanted the best for himself.

Thanks again for checking by!

It would be cool to see them bring a version of Grievous back like this that they did with Darth Maul. I would so be down for that!

Just a great custom Philipp.

31st Nexu Battalion

Just wanted to give you a little update on what has been happening on my workbench lately. Needed to take a short break - I recognized how much time Instagram is consuming and that I neglected the Shipyards since I installed that app 3 weeks ago...so apologies for my absence.

Used this custom trooper I got with another fodder:

These are looking good. I agree with Tamer, the color scheme is excellent. I love how much work you do researching these customs. But I'm really curious about the Wookiee body I saw at your work station. :)

Great work on the fanfic clones - they look nice. Kind of a mashup of Wolffe's men and Shock Troopers.

Tamer: Thank you for sharing them! I'm glad you like them too!

Starchaser: Thanks for your comment! I fell for this design right when I found it. Thanks for the heads up! I only collected images of this design in the outer web. No entry on Wookieepedia or such, but I know there're some Battlefront Mods of the 31st Battalion out there. Speaking of Wookiees: This is going to be a Wookie Marauder based on a miniature by Wizards of the Coast of their Revenge of the Sith Line. Always wanted to get a little hairy on Ewoks and Wookiees...now's the time!

RC-1136: Thanks for checking out my latest! Yeah, I agree on the mashup. I really like the design and will never get tired of different Clone Trooper designs - so won't Hasbro! lol

Eyositer: Thank you so much for looking at my customs and leaving a comment! More are in the works  ;)

Here's my 3rd Version of the Droideka. This one is modded, repainted based on its appearance in STAR WARS: Battlefront 2 by EA.

    "Great. Rolling death balls."
    -- Ahsoka Tano, on droidekas

"Droidekas, also known as destroyer droids (destroyers for short), or as rollies in clone trooper slang, were a type of droid used by the Trade Federation during the Invasion of Naboo and, later, by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. Manufactured by the Colicoids on Colla IV, droidekas were dangerous and deadly, designed to exterminate their adversaries with extreme prejudice. They could transform their shape by curling into a ball and moving up to 75 kilometers per hour across a surface, or stand on three legs and utilize a shield generator while firing at a target. Before the Invasion of Naboo, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn had to face droidekas on a Droid Control Ship."

I kept this version somewhat darker and in better condition than both previous versions. This time around I painted it only with acrylic colors by Citadel:

- Primer: Citadel's Black Primer (Spray Paint)
- First Layer of Bronze (dark): Base: Warlock Bronze (dry-brush)
- Second Layer of Bronze (light): Layer: Sycorax Bronze (dry-brush)
- Body: Boltgun Metal (dry-brush)

Tamer: Thank you so much, Shawn! I really appreciate you featuring my customs on here  [at1]

Starchaser: Thank you a lot! I felt like making a Droideka in somewhat better condition. And I only used Citadel paints on this one this time around. And I think that's the way to paint the only folded one I have, which will be featured in my next update.

FialaFernbrugg: Thank you! I'm also quite happy with the result. The next repaint is already in the works!

Last week I finally got to customize a batch of figures, again. And if that wasn't special enough already a friend of mine came over and we painted figures and were creative together like in the good ole days. Back in 2009 we planned & built (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=3139.msg55948#msg55948) our first diorama together and wanted it to be modular. So the past weekend and days following it were very special to me. It's good to see some friends again after a very stressful time.
Feels good to be back with an

IG-100 Magna Guard
blue metallic version

Reference Material:

I've been amazed by the blue version of the Magna Guard since I got the illustrated encyclopedia from DK. Spent some good time going through this very detailed book.

Making of:

For the metallic effect I used two email colors, which are more durable than acrylic paints, especially on joints. First, I dry-brushed Revell's #91 Iron onto the black base coat. Then, I applied dabbed tads of flat blue onto the Magna Guard according to the reference material. It's not chipping per definition, but it achieves the effect.

Details:

Working on my recent project taught me quite a bit about metal effects. Even though there are better chipping effects out there, I'm quite happy with how this one turned out.

My collection of CIS customs is growing. I really hope we'll see some of the being updated for The Vintage Collection. We haven't seen a Destroyer Droid released since the Movie Heroes line of 2012. An all-new Super Battle Droid would be nice as well as a return of the Dwarf Spider Droid. And what about a small Crab Droid as seen on Utapau in Revenge of the Sith? You can take a look at my latest version of the NR-N99 Tank Droid after the jump (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10165.msg218129#msg218129). This project also included some chipping of metallic paints.

While painting I love listening to music. It's relaxing and the peek of quality time for me when I need some time on my own. Today I discovered this brilliant playlist. And I highly recommend to you to check it out!

Stay tuned for more customs over the weekend. Fabian & I worked on several figures last weekend and I finished most of them during the week.

This IG-100 unit was a fun project and it's always rewarding to work with metal paints. Next one will be a repaint of the Vintage Collection version. The ROTS one was just a test, didn't dare to aim at the much rarer VC18 figure.

Sorry for my late comment.
Your Magna Guard turned out great my friend. You are really the expert for metallic paint jobs.
The weathering and chipping looks very realistic.
The same goes for the Kal Skirata custom figure. The shiny gold coating looks amazing.
I can't wait to see more of your figures.
Excellent work.

@Tamer: Thank you very much! I really need to get back to business. It's been a good and busy time since December and I haven't really thought about the hobby recently because if I do I only get more ideas. Instead, I want to realize the ones that I already have. Next up to share is probably the Ugnaught. Pictures were taken back in January, but I still need to edit them...

@Clonehead: Thanks for asking and sorry that it took me forever to reply. Fabian actually dry-brushed the armor of Kal Skirata several times until it looked similar to the reference material. So no spray needed ;) Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment on the Magna Guard as well!

@FialaFernbrugg: Thanks so much my friend! It was good talking to you yesterday! Really reminded me of how much I need to catch up on here. Thanks for the compliment! I wouldn't consider myself an expert though, I'm still learning and happy with the results I got so far. Fabian did achieve a great effect with multiple layers of dry-brushing, so that was a different approach than mine. I might go back to re-work the Magna Guard before I paint a TVC version. So hope Hasbro will re-issue the Magna Guard in The Vintage Collection, again.

@Moronarama: Thank you so much for your comment! :D

@JDeck: Thank you, mate!

@Starchaser: Thank you, Sir! I still need to finish the other customs and hope to meet Fabian soon, again to paint Skirata's face - we actually modified a head of an Indiana Jones figure for that.

Thank you soooo much for all your comments! It does mean a lot to me and keeps me going!

The CIS fun continues. Thought you might like a wip pic:

I removed the shade that was applied to the VC78 B1 Battle Droid. It now matches the head that wasn't shaded in the factory for some odd reason.
The Super Battle Droid is used as well and came with some scratches already. The paint remover solves the surface of the plastic, too. So I decided to sand it.
It's a test run for the Droideka. Both will be fun and join the Imperial Army. I hope you'll like them. And before I repaint a Crab Droid, I thought I give a Tri Droid a try.
