Hi guys, I'm new to customs and have just done my first couple of figures. Some of you may have already seen these over on rebelscum. Thought I would start with some 501st troopers.
First up, "dogma"
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/image-27.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/image-27.jpg.html)
-
And second is "Jesse"
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/image-25.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/image-25.jpg.html)
And the two together....
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/image-28.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/image-28.jpg.html)
More to follow!
Cheers.

Those are some sweet paint apps. What's your process to get them weathered-looking?
-
Thanks man.
My painting process is to complete a precision set of the blue markings first. Once that is done I paint in all of the white chips and scratches onto the blue markings. After that I apply the "dirt". Firstly I mix in a little black paint into a lot of water (maybe a 10 to one ratio of water to paint....depends on how dark I want the dirt), then brush this watery mixture over the area I want weathered (in this case all oh him!). Do this one area at a time, eg painting on the lower leg. Leave a couple of seconds then wipe off with a cloth. This loaves a general grime over the whole area with more dirt in the various relief areas. Of you want more dirt around the boots or lower legs etc then just repeat the process until you have built up as much as you want.you can do this with multiple colours and shades as required. When I think I have overdone it then I strip the dirt back a bit using an eraser. Seems to do the trick! Finally I make a more concentrated "wash" (increase the proportion of paint to water) and apply this to detail areas where I want a little more definition (such as around the shoulder pads, belt, boots etc).
After that you should be left with a battle weathered trooper!
-
Welcome to the custom action figure section. Very nice Clones. Off to share.
Great technique on the weathering too.
-
Nice work! Welcome to the Yards!
-
There are great! Very nice and crisp on the paint aps.
-
That is a fantastic result on your process. Thank you for sharing!
-
Thanks folks, and thanks for the welcome. Really pleased you, like my efforts! Phase 2 captain Rex will be up next. .....when my Matt varnish arrives!
-
OK, you've revealed the weathering process, but how did you get Jesse's tattoo on the helmet so crisply?
... and uh ... beautiful work.
-
Cheers.
The emblem on jesse's head is just a bit of careful freehand painting. to approach that I just use a tiny amount of paint and do a small area of painting . I then just build up the line. sometimes it goes better than others!
-
Brilliant figures.
Thanks for sharing your painting process.
I wish I had a steady hand like you.
-
I have to echo the others with thanking you for going over your painting technique and agree you must have one very steady hand!
-
My pleasure. When my next "blank" clones arrive I will try and do a step-by-step run through of what I'm doing and will post it up.
Here is a just-about-complete Captain Rex. Would prefer it if he were a little less shiny but have used dullcote already on it and this seems to be about as Matt as he gets.

Wow, love those hash marks. Just fantastic. Time to take this to the front page.
-
Welcome to the Yards! Great looking paint aps and weathering on all of your clones.
-
Thank you sir! Appreciate it.
-
Okay, got an update. Have just completed the initial detail work on Hardcase. Weathering effects up next.

Your paint applications are great! I really like how your clones are looking, keep it up!
-
Thanks! Seems such a shame to weather him now..... :-)
-
I agree that detail work on the helmet and chest is amazing. Off to share on the front page.
-
Sharp looking paintwork on hard case!
-
So here is a lightly weathered Hardcase.......

(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/image-45.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/image-45.jpg.html)
Apologies for the poor quality of photos.
-
And a big thanks for the positive comments! I'm new to the hobby and the encouragement is really appreciated. Cheers.
-
Your lines are just perfect. I admire your steady hand. You definitely show a knack for this. Keep up the good work!
-
Thanks man - appreciate it. :)
-
Thoes customs look great! Well done.
-
Thanks mungo. :-)
-
I agree such lovely paint work here. Off to share on the front page with that great group shot. I love that Rex with all the hash marks on his armor.
I know it won't happen with the focus on the new episodes of SW and REBELS, but I would love to see an EU series of novels on what happened to Rex after order 66.
-
Excellent looking clone and I love that group shot.
-
Really good work !!! Your paint work is outstanding ...Well done
-
hey what did u use to paint the fine lines on the troopers brush or pen? they look great by the way.
-
Hi nuthin but bits.....gears of war ?
Thanks!, everything was painted on with a very pointy brush!
-
"Gears Forever" lol I didn't think anyone would get that. yeah your lines are sick. acrylic paint?
-
Great customs
-
Thanks.
And Gears horde mode (on gears 2 or 3) is still my favourite gaming experience of all time!
-
Great bunch of custom clone troopers!
-
Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Just took a little break from the Umbaran 501st to make a figure for my 5 year old son.
Here is Republic Commando Rex!
-
I used Boss as the base figure......the orange was a pain to get rid of.....
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/image-60.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/image-60.jpg.html)
Here he is with a phase 2 captain Rex.....
-
I did this quite quickly, so maybe not as neat as my umbaran efforts......
-
Do some of the pictures look stretched to anyone else? ......not sure why they are doing that!
-
Do some of the pictures look stretched to anyone else? ......not sure why they are doing that!
Wow, yes a few do. We have an auto resize feature for our images. I have never seen it distort pictures like this though.
I believe I would go back and get rid of the image sizes for width and height and see if the auto adjust kicks back in correctly. I will see if other folks are having the same issues, but I just uploaded a picture and it worked ok.
That RC Rex is just fantastic. Once again your paint work is just phenomenal. The cat's eyes are perfect as is the weathering and the hash marks.
UPDATE: I just fixed them. The one image that is not showing up must not have loaded correctly on photobucket. let me know if you see this happening again.
-
Fantastic - thanks Tamer! :)
-
wow nicely done !!!!
-
Cheers! Glad you like it. :)
-
You sure have me wanting to see Wolffe this way now!
-
Commando Wolffe ......Hmmmm....he would be cool. I'll put him on the list!
-
Your Commando Rex is awesome.
The paintwork is incredibly good.
I hope you'll make some other "Commando-conversions".
-
The orange may have been a pain to remove, but that Commando Rex is worth it! Nice, crisp lines and the kill marks look perfect. Great idea for a figure!
-
Cheers guys, appreciate it! :)
-
Right, next up is my attempt at a Bo Katan custom........have just put the figure together today, next up is the paint!

Wow - Rav Bralor upper & arms, TCW A/Sing thighs, and Mando Warrior calves? And where'd you get that sweet helmet??? That mix of parts really works well together, imo. Paint is going to just be the bow on the package here. Fantastic work!
-
I agree with Doc, just fantastic. I kinda like the color scheme the way it is already with that orange!
And am I the only once who sees a very close resemblance to the Mando Gal that is gonna be on the new REBELS show?
Off to the front page.
-
That figure is going to look sweet once painted. The helmet looks like the same one I bought on eBay. Tell me, did you have to drill out the neck hole yourself. I had to for mine. This makes me want to get back to work on this figure, haven't touched he in a while.
-
That figure is going to look sweet once painted. The helmet looks like the same one I bought on eBay.
Do you have a link for that seller. I'd like to buy one rather than make one. Bo Kataan and the new Rebels femando are on my to do list too.
-
Off to a great start! That is a cool looking helmet cast.
-
Thanks everyone, it was good fun putting this together.....I've never made my own action figure out of parts before. The parts used by the way were Isabet Reau (torso, belt and arms), cw Aurra sing (pelvis, thighs and knee joints), cw mandalorian (lower legs) and a sculpted head made by someone I met through rebelscum (cheers parintachin73!)'. He does also sell the head through ebay.
Got a little time today to start putting on some paint. Just blocked out some colours on the body and did some of the detail work on her head. Here is a work in progress for you.

-
Great work so far, I'll e looking forward to seeing this figure when she's complete.
Ron
-
nicely done ! looking forward to seeing this completed
-
That really rocks. If anyone can get me an ebay link here or by pm I would love to feature this ebay seller too.
We need to get the word out about that!
-
Cheers all. Here is today's update. Managed to do a base coat for Bo's armour. Also managed to paint on the armour that isn't part of the actual sculpt (thighs and pelvis).
Next up is the detailing, shading and the belt.
If I can track down the ebay seller name for the helmet, I will post it up.
(http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l150/Simonipenter/imagejpg1-5.jpg) (http://s95.photobucket.com/user/Simonipenter/media/imagejpg1-5.jpg.html)
-
That is a wicked custom! Love the level of precision on the paint apps.
It's a shame that I see figures on the shelf that don't have HALF of the attention to detail paid to their own.
-
Super smooth custom bro, great lines on the helmet
-
Cheers guys, appreciate it. Hopefully do some more work on her later today and will post an update.
-
This is one figure I would love to see Hasbro make. Guess that will never happen. Wow though. Looking forward to the final update.
-
Well, aside from the problem I had with her shoulder emblems (spent hours on them, got them near perfect, then bent her arms at the shoulder and the joint shredded both of the emblems.....broke my heart), this is 99% the finished figure. Hope you like.

Wow, one of the best looking Custom Mandalorians I have seen in awhile. I think you did a fantastic job.
Bummer about all that work on the shoulder emblems, but you have to be happy with the way this looks. Hasbro will never release a figure like this probably, but you sure do show how it can be done. Off to the front page.
Oh, did you get the ebay link for that seller of those helmets? I can see folks wanting to buy some of these.
-
Nice work. Love the paint job
-
absolutely fantastic. Beautiful paint job. If this was for sale I'd pay the exorbitant price that hasbro charges for their crappy figures!
Kudos. Great job.
-
Can I just say..."WANT" hahahah, simply amazing my friend, simply amazing. I would love to know where you got that helmet. :D
-
Awesome! I love it too much!
