Title: 3D Systems Acquires Gentle Giant Studios

I found this from our friends at Yakface.com, it looks like one of my favorite SW Licensees has been taken over. Listen to this:

"3DS plans to immediately leverage Gentle Giant Studios technology and vast library of digital content into its consumer platform and extend its existing brand relationships to further the reach of 3D scanning, modeling and printing for entertainment, toys, collectibles, action figures in conjunction with numerous blockbuster films and evergreen licensed properties."

Wouldn't it be cool to see them offer that same 3D Scanning to your own custom projects in the future? I would love to see them release a vintage action figure line themselves based on the cool sculpts they are doing with the GG Kenner Jumbos. After seeing that 2 inch carded Boba Fett Figure they included with the Christmas Yoda Offering I can see they could do it easily.

I'm curious if this will change something in GG's production/sale policy and customer service...

This is very interesting.  I wonder if it will improve sculpt and paint apps that have dramatically dropped over the years.  I also wonder what it'll do to average price.

I have to wonder about the price point myself.

I do agree with this trend to being more accurate in regards to the sculpts perhaps we will see better paint apps and more correct versions of said apps on our favorite busts, action figures, and statues.

Look, if I'm paying $5 for an action figure, I can be okay with less accuracy in scuplting and paint apps.  At $10 and $20, I expect more, and have been let down.  When you get into $55-100 for a limited run of mini-busts, I expect near perfection, and they've let me down in recent years.  It's like they got popular, then got lazy and rode the wave into the ground.  Of course, there have been exceptions, but even Gentle Giant or Sideshow aren't getting my money anymore, because the costs have gone up up up and quality has gone down down down.  So this will be interesting, to say the least.

We'll see what their policy is quite soon for sure. Hope it will be for good and not worse

I already got my PGM Code which I don't remember them ever giving me this early after getting a new year's membership.

Good to hear that, maybe it is for the better.

I never got a PGM. Though I'm quite an old GG collector, I prefer their statues to the mini-busts, but never got really interested in the premium stuff they had.

Thanks for the offer. I have 2 friends who usually have PGM and offered their help as well each year, but nothing appeared to the horizon so far.
