Here's my custom X-wing pilot Leia inspired by some comic book appeareances. Used a TVC Hoth Leia. Boots are from a Rebels Kanan. Vest was cut off and ground down from another Xwing pilot, along with the leg flares and gauntlets. Harness was made from ribbon.

Wow, she looks great as a pilot. What ships did she pilot? That gal needs a custom X-Wing.

Custom Agent Kallus

With the helmet, the 5 POA headsculpt can pass for realistic. The body was a TVC Imp Navy Commander. Details were sculpted on.

custom EV-9D9

Sadly, we haven't had a new EV-9D9 since the POTF2 line. One of the first customs I made was an EV that could sit down. I had to get two of them as there needed to be an overlap at the elbows and knees. I used cut off small nails as pins for the hinges. The complex part was that the hip plate limited the hip swivel to about 45 degrees. I used a chunk of plastic glued to the cut off hip plate and fastened a tiny rubber band through the body and mounted around a part on the back. This allows the hip plate to push away from the body when the legs need greater travel.
more pics in the next post.

hip plate gimmick. A little difficult to see in second pic but there's a cylinder there that the rubber band attaches to.

Super nice job of these. I love the work you did on EV-9D9, very creative design solutions. Leia is a great figure, my favorite of the group.

Here's a few simple customs involving mostly head swaps and minimal modifications

Armand Isard - body is Mosep Bineed. To be honest not sure where the head was from. I think I took it from a Imperial officer I got in a lot purchase. For all I know the previous owner did a head swap. LOL

Governor Pryce - Deena Shan body. Indiana Jones villain head (don't remember her name)

Finn (Stormtrooper)

Mara Jade - Black Widow head from a TRU exclusive figure.

Here's my custom Probe Droid. I made this prior to the updated Hasbro one so it was built off the POTF2 one. I used 2 of them. I needed to cut off two "eyes" from one and add those over to the primary. I added an LED light. The trickiest part was adding articulation to the legs. I didn't bother with the short ones but I did on the others. Even the pistons work on those. THAT was a bit of a pain. LOL  After I made this, the next year I think is when the newer version came out. Go figure. If you want to see how everything works, check out the video here https://rumble.com/vslr24-probe-droid-custom-figure.html

Another custom I did within a year of getting an official one. This is my Dr Aphra with BT. I later was able to get a black protocol droid (I think a Disney one) and just paint the eyes. Recipe: comic pack Bultar Swan torso, arms, and head. Juno Eclipse waist and legs. The cap was modded from a Tycho Celchu cap and had to mod the hair as well. Han Solo holster and blaster. The jacket was sculpted. I actually prefer this outfit and jacket over the one they gave us. For BT I used a black R5 droid and modded the face. The eye is an actually LED, but it's not wired. Simply the right shape and size. The weapons were kit bashed parts.

"Behind the scenes" customs. The C-3PO one I've seen done before. I think it was actually the first custom I ever did. Yeah, he should have the balaclava on but I was starting off simple. The droid head is lightly glued on so he can actually hold it. The next custom I did just because The Jar Jar head as a hat always made me laugh.

I was excited that Hasbro was making a ROM Spaceknight figure. Not so existed when it was part of an SDCC exclusive bundled with a bunch of other figures. At $100+ for that one figure on the secondary market, you make your own! So here's my ROM figure. The base body is Silver Surfer as he's already a figure "blank" and silver as a bonus!  Now I had to do a lot of grinding down the body and neck as he has that forward pointing hunched neck thing going on. Cut and glued the fingers more closed so he could hold his weapon. The body is a 3D printed shell that encapsulates the torso. ROM has a body design that actually makes this possible more so than other characters would. The waist area has sculpted on ridge detail and needed some build up to match the body. The feet had some sculpting mods to them. Note, this is the original version of ROM, not the reboot version Hasbro made.

As a kid I only had two Battlestar Galactica figures. The Cylon and the Dagget. Of course like most kids, the tail broke off fairly quickly. Years later (before I even attempted a custom figure) I sold off the Cylon. Well since its A) "Star Wars adjacent" and B) a robot, I decided I needed a more articulated one. So I looked for the worst and cheapest beater I could find seeing as the torso and head were all that was needed. Picked one up for $5 at a show.

The entire figure was a little out of scale so I needed a beefy donor for the arms and legs. Vader seemed the best bet and already black. Now the trick with figures is the pins and pivots are often different so I like to try and keep both halves of a joint when possible. I opened up the Cylon torso and ground out the glue posts. I then hacked apart the Vader leaving a ground down torso pivot that would fit up inside the Cylon shell. I did the same with the arms, dremeling a grove around the torso pivot that would be locked in place by the Cylon shell.

After gluing on a soft goods skirt, I glued the torso together. The belt, calf armor, and bicep bands are cut styrene glued in place. My biggest gripe is the one leg seems longer than the other. Never understood how something like that gets to the production stage. Maybe someday I'll make a rifle for him.

Wow Raylen, that turned out great! It looks just like the original, but I love that its articulated. Now the Cylons can terrorize the Star Wars universe. Truth is, I was thinking about doing something similar (having already done an Adama figure), so now I have an excellent tutorial for it :)

Battle Angel Alita

Black Widow body, Bultar Swan head, b.a.d. arms. As with so many projects, what seems simple as first throws a curve ball. So the problem with this custom was the omni pivot on Black Widow differs from the single motion range on the BAD arms. This meant having to use sculpting putty to complete the ball of the shoulder. Then I had to cut a slot for the pivot hoop. cont....

Title: Re: Raylen's custom figures
Post by: Raylen on August 05, 2022, 12:36:16 PM
... I then sculpted shoulder "pads" that bridge the hoop, helping cover it and reinforce. To complete the pivot, I cut two small nails for the pins. I left the nail heads as it added to the mechanical look. Nice thing is some of the construction actually adds to the aesthetic. All in all I'm pretty happy with it. The worst part was trying to paint the eyes which is very difficult when such a small "canvas" to work with.

Two customs. One is the "other" Duros from the cantina we never got. Don't remember the recipe. He's got a soft goods skirt so he can sit. The other is the skiff guard Fozzic. Mostly skiff guard Lando lower have, torso (i forget) with Willow Hood's head. Modded the helmet and added soft good rag. The skiff guard Lando armor was cut off and glued on new body.

Been needing to finish this one up for awhile now. Head was a cast from the Lucas Stormtrooper I think which may be why it seemed a bit small. Body was from an Indiana Jones body that had a hideous face sculpt. LOL  I wanted to make the plaid stripes but the thought of trying to get that pattern right is what kept me from finishing so forget it. Happy with how it turned out anyway. Nightmare trying to paint eyes that small though!  Toothpick for the iris and sharpened toothpick for the pupil. LOL   Forget Lucas as a stormtrooper or a rebel pilot. THIS is what we all want!  The man, the legend, the maker!  Toss in a clapper and camera, and put him on a vintage card Hasbro.

Fabulous custom! I plan on using the same recipe. Only missing the George in disguise that's sitting at a friend's house in Georgia since 2019. Cannot wait to come back to the U.S. - and I agree! Fingers crossed for a TVC release of the Maker himself! I really like the color you chose for his shirt by the way!

Not sure if you'd call this more of a repair/restoration?  As with many kids apparently, my Battlestar Galactica Dagget figure lost his tail very quickly. I only ever had Dagget and the Cyclon and I was very fond of this figure. For years, I've wanted to make a new tail and finally prioritized it. Nice thing was I didn't have to buy any new materials. I scavenged a few jewelry beads from my wife's stash that were perfect and I had a coil of soft metal wire of the right diameter. Easy!  And the soft metal means it has UNLIMITED POW- err, I mean... UNLIMITED ARTICULATION!!!!  Mixed some brown and orange paint to match the body and happy with the result. Also took the time to repaint some of the silver and eye paint that was well worn.

Been awhile since I worked on a custom figure. Been wanting to do a Shadows of the Empire Luke for awhile now. Nice thing is it was a one day quick project. TVC Death Star II Luke, crappy Walmart Han vest and belt and gun from "open coat" Hoth Han (though I think this belt was used many times. Had to drill a hole through belt and into waist a bit to get the saber hilt to stay. The vest wants to interfere. Overall really happy with it!

Used Auto Etching Primer, then experimented with colors. A lot of people tend to think of it as a yellow. Like a carry over from the end of ANH. But it really is more a light tan. I used Krylon Fusion Camoflague Tan.
Title: Re: Raylen's custom figures
Post by: Raylen on December 16, 2023, 03:14:44 PM
continuing with my Shadows of the Empire kick, here's my Dash Rendar. Wow, I think this was the heaviest bit of kit bashing I've done on a figure. So for those who want to know the recipe....

Upper torso was from GI Joe 25th Anniversary Zartan (though I believe the same torso was used for Cap. Bludd)  The lower torso and legs were TVC Han Solo from the "Solo" film. Great thing is the two halves mate up perfectly so you can still pose the torso a bit. Now I needed to find a set of bare arms and that's a little harder to find. I forgot I had a medical frigate Luke laying around or I would have tried that first. Also a lot of figures will have an arm band or something you'd have to shave off. I ended up using a Marvel "Warpath" figure. Now I was worried it wouldn't work because he stands a good head taller than most other figures. He's BIG. Fortunately, the arms themselves weren't really longer so although Dash looks pretty ripped, he's not a gorilla!  A bonus here again was that the arm design was the same as the torso and the two arms mated perfectly here as well. The hands on Warpath didn't look right, posed almost like claws and too large. No way to hold anything. I used a pair from a fodder TVC Col Cracken torso I had. Score again as the hands snapped in without modification!

The shoulder armor, puffy shoulders and matching texture on the pants were sculpted from Procreate.  If sculpting isn't your bag, the armor has a similar "look" that you could simply paint the shoulder padding as a shortcut. Now for his head and after looking at hundreds of SW figures, there's nothing even close. I thought that perhaps a Chris Pratt Jurassic Park figure might be the closest to start with. Found a decent one and even though the neck ball seemed much bigger on the JP figure, the head swaps over without any problems. I did have to grind down the Zartan neck a bit cause its huge but the ball didn't need any changes. The holster was from the same Han figure as the color seemed a good match. Gave him a different blaster just to move him a little bit further than just a Han stand in.

As for paints, another blessing was that I had a blue color that matched the pants so I didn't have to paint everything, just the lower torso and the strips on the legs. The color is Apple Barrel brand. Color: 21484E Admiral Blue. The silver armor I spray painted on. Textured padding was DecoArt Americana brand. Color: Cinnamon Stick. For the neck stump and his hair and stubble I mixed whatever I had on hand which was a pain. But I don't feel like spending as much on gas as a couple bottles of paint and wait in line forever behind Christmas shoppers. LOL   Only real corner I cut was not adding the extra strap to the holster. Seemed like more trouble than it'd be worth and I'm more than happy with how this figure turned out. So many potential problems (or more involved work) that were avoided through pure chance. Next on my to-do list is Guri.
