Thanks, although I wasn't too happy with how it turned out. The yellow seemed a bit too bright.

I love the tie ugly!! I have the Y wing, but don't have any tie's to try and recreate my own... =(

Great work though on all of these. I am going to primer my Cruiser tonight and start painting it this week. I have filled in the screw holes with epoxy as well as the small rectangular hole under the bridge.

I haven't decided on a color yet, but I was going to go for forest green, or a similar but lighter blue to yours.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Believe it or not, these customs were when I just started. I've found out that customizing can kill some time when you're bored and is very relaxing. Anyway, a few more Action Fleets here:

Shadow AT-AT Walker, based off the titanium version

Imperial Trooper Transport. Based off a similar ship seen in the first level of Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike

N/A

This custom is actually really useful for me too. I still have that side compartment you see in the picture. I use that to store my extra Imperial Action Fleet figures so I don't lose them. I still need to touch this one up as well, I'm still trying to figure out what I wanna do for the bottom where the legs used to be.

More to come soon!

Cool. It looks like it could use some tractor treads, perhaps 4 sets with road wheels and suspension like a sandcrawler.

I like the sandcraweler tank tread idea.

a cheap way to pull that off would be get online and look up some papercraft print outs of the sandcrawler and build just the tank treads and glue them to it.

I've got a ton of action fleet ships coming in the mail this week and can't wait to get them here.

I'm going to have a couple extra walkers too and I think I'm going to emulate your walker/shuttle project and see what I can come up with!

keep em comming! you know you'll have one devoted follower looking at these! ;) I love my action fleets... ;D

After we get all of these painted up we should take a few pics at an agreed upon angle. Then we can have Jules Photoshop them all into a grand fleet =)

I LOVE that idea.  heck those who have done 1:18th custom ships could do the same thing.

I've been toying with the idea of a 360 degree rotating "lazy susan" figure display stand.  In theory I'd be able to turn the figure 360 deg and get an immage from every angle.  This would be great for the guys doing dio stories and photo-novels.  Having one figure with several poses in a 360 degree rotational set of immages would make choosing poses and manipulating immages a breeze...

not to mention it'd be a fun way to videotape a figure for a youtube presentation!

Just on a whim, I looked at rotating display stuff big enought to fit a Gunship or maybe an ATTE.....
They wanted almost as much as the ships cost.... For a rotating cart for seasonings in your cupboard?
And my wife has a few already? They are a little small for my gunship, but that could be modified for under $1....
I have got just the right size scraps from a sheet of 3/8 inch plywood in the garage.... and a hand saw to cut it.... might need a soda when I am done....
And she caught me......  and I had better try this while she is not at home.....
Maybe tomorrow morning....

Title: Re: Red_Two's Custom Vehicles

DRS, I was thinking about doing the same thing so that I could pose a figure and then take 360 degree photos without moving my camera or the figure.... Or take a 360 degree rotating video of the figure or ship to display on youtube.

it's a great Idea to use a lazy susan... that's what my dad suggested lol.  great minds all think alike I guess...

let us know how it goes with yours!

and the vehicle repaints are great RED-two.  I can't wait to bust out the several action fleet models I want to do!  my creative drive is itching!

Alright before I post this, just want to say don't get your hopes up on this one lol. A fellow reviewer (who will remain anonymous) and I were working on a combined project: Action Fleet Outrider. He would do the kit-bashing, and I would do the painting. For ships, we used the B-Wing and Millennium Falcon. I sent the 2 ships to him back in February. A few weeks ago his pc died and he needed a new one, I haven't heard from him since. Everytime I would ask about it he either doesn't answer me or says he lost the stuff. It sucks because I paid for those 2 ships, as well as the shipping to him.  Anyway, here's what we had so far.

I was really looking forward to painting it too. Oh well.  :(

aww man that realy sucks.  I promise not to jip you like that bud!  I'm a man of my word... the only thing I might not follow through on is deadlines.... lol

that seemed like a pretty solid concept though.   However, I would go about it slightly differently I think.

unfourtunately those are the two ships I don't have duplicates of and even if I did I don't think I could cut them up in that way! lol

Really bold move on customizing old vehicles like that. You must have some big cahones to do that , I meant that in a respectful way like, you didn't screw it up. You did good but, I would rather customize nw vejicles instead of old ones.
Title: Re: Red_Two's Custom Vehicles

normally we only customize our spares... or shell out the cash on convieniently cheap e-bay auctions to get the spares we need.

It seems like there will always be a steady suply of old collections going up for auction... at least in the near future.  I think at any given time that I've checked there has always been about 6 pages of action fleet vehicles for sale on e-bay.

Here's a quick peek at what I've been working on. Its the concept design of the cloud car by Ralph McQuarrie. As of now this is the only image I've seen of the concept design.

And here's my work in progress

I'd say its about 90% done. And a little trick I learned - if you get paint on the cockpit plastic, a toothpick will easily take off the paint, and won't leave any scratch marks.  :)

I also posted this in my AF collection thread, hope its not a problem?  :-\

It's been a while since I posted any customs. Don't worry, I still intend on doing more. Here's a list of my upcoming Action Fleet customs:

Z-95 Headhunter
R-22 Spearhead
Rebel Alliance Shuttle
T-Wing
Hobbie's X-Wing (Red 4)
White TIE Fighter (ANH Version)

Good news, I've been working on another custom - the R-22 Spearhead.

(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/9708/pic0866.jpg) (http://img214.imageshack.us/i/pic0866.jpg/)

(http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/926/pic0867.jpg) (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/pic0867.jpg/)

As you can see, its far from being completed. There's more to be painted, lines to be straightened out, and I would like to add a few new pieces. Painting the white arrow at the front was a big pain, so I took a file and just filed down the little bumps, and it worked great (still needs to be straightened out).

Bad news, I ran out of white paint lol. I ordered Warhammer Skull White Spray Paint, and I need to get the 4 fl. oz. of the same color. Once I get 1 of the 2 I can continue. The spray paint I need for the majority of my customs (T-Wing, Z-95). I'll probably be rotating between customs, as I get bored with doing one, then another after one is completed. I'm banking on getting the paint the middle of next week hopefully.

So now that I await my skull white paint, I've been working on the Rebel Alliance Shuttle. I had an extra shuttle laying around, and the shuttle spudafett sent me had no weapons or cockpit window. Not a problem, as when this is completed I can just simply switch the wings off. Anyway, this was just a practice run.

Here's the process: I filed down the wing so everything was leveled off. Then I printed out a Rebel Alliance logo, cut it out (with a razor blade, why I don't know - next time scissors), traced it with pencil then painted it in.

Results:  I have to file it down more, and gotta cut out the logo with scissors. Good thing for practice runs. Anyway, here's what I have from the practice run:

sweet...

but....

have you thought about making one of the tyderium's more acurately scaled?  The wings should actually be longer/taller.  I've seen someone else do it in the a/f scale a long time ago and it looked amazing.  It'd take alot of scratch building and sheet styrene though.  I wanted to do one but for some reason here lately I've lost all motivation to work on the a/f ships (one reason you wound up with the z-95 and the t-wing so easilly ;) lol).

anyway.  The insignia doesn't look too bad.  You could clean that up free-hand with some white paint around the edges to straiten it out.

OR you could use a method that I've done in the past to get dificult symbols like that done

Paint the entire wing red,
then use masking tape and cover the wing with it, trace your insignia onto the tape, then using an exacto knife cut out the insignia and peel off the masking tape AROUND the insignia.   This should leave a masking tape insignia on the wing.  Spray paint over all of this with your white paint and once it dries remove the remaining tape... you should be left with a good looking insignia.

Spud, I really like that last idea with the masking tape, I'll have to try it.

As for the longer wings, probably not. I'm basing this custom off the Rebel Alliance Shuttle seen in the PC game X-Wing. I might look for a slightly bigger logo, I had a tough time with it at the top.

Can't wait to see the finished ships.

So I posted over at Rebelscum my list of Action Fleet customs, and someone suggested I try an Assault Gunboat. I remember the ship from the X-Wing series for the PC. I looked into it and came up with an idea to work by. This will take a lot of kit bashing, but I think I got this planned out good.

(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9886/ag2.jpg) (http://img294.imageshack.us/i/ag2.jpg/)

A:  Body from an X-Wing
B:  Top wing from a shuttle (Lambda versions)
C:  Side wings from a shuttle (Lambda again)

As for D and E, I'll probably have to look for those parts separately. For D, I was thinking maybe the wings from an X-Wing, but they might seem a bit too short.

What do you guys think?

Oh that is hard one Dave but I'm sure you can do it.

The idea from Clint is great. You should try it with some 1/72 model kit airplanes. I think the wings from a  B-25 Mitchell or B-17 bomber could work for D.

And I think E will be a scratch build. Maybe made of wood or plastic or a square packaging (candy, battery, ...)

So I STILL haven't gotten my paint in the mail yet, but I was able to knock out another custom.

Some of you may remember Hasbro took over the Action Fleet line in 2002 or so. They were supposed to make an Action Fleet Star Destroyer. Unfortunately that was one of the vehicles that was never mass produced. Thanks to Unreality86 (from Rebelscum) who also made one, I was able to make my own Star Destroyer. Taking a Star Destroyer Hallmark Ornament from 2004, I was able to cut off the wire coming from the bottom. After that I removed the tiny Blockade Runner that was chained at the bottom. There was one other little chain on the main hull, which I removed. A button was located on the bottom, right behind the hanger, I guess it was to light up when pressed. I got a screwdriver and lightly hammered in the button. The hole was just the right size to fit a standard Action Fleet stand on. Lastly, I repainted it with fortress gray, as it had an ugly greenish-gray paint job to it.

Before:

After:

I think this will look pretty good next to the Action Fleet Blockade Runner, no?   8)

Progress on the white TIE Fighter is coming along. The whole TIE was spray painted white, and I've been painting the panels black myself. Still need to paint some panels on one wing (second pic) and add details to the cockpit and engine. For anyone curious, the white TIE Fighter is the A New Hope version, as in ESB and ROTJ we got the blueish gray one we normally see now. The white version was also a repaint/variation in the Titanium line.

that white tie is looking pretty awesome.  I love it.

Did they recolor the ties in ANH when they made the special edition?  are you talking about them being white in the movie itself or just in the vintage toy line?

great paintjob Dave. The TIE looks really good.

you should try a slight drybrushing with dark grey to bring out all the details

I don't think they re-colored the TIEs in ANH. If I remember correctly they were still relatively white in color.

Spud, the white TIE I'm doing is based off both ANH and the titanium line (not vintage).

gotchya.  I'll have to go back and watch anh and see.  I honestly have never noticed any difference in the on screen colors of the ties in the movies, just the differences in the toy lines.

I'm fairly certain that this is an action fleet vehicle, the larger 6" scale vehicles from back in the day.  I believe that the titanium line already has a white tie fighter.

the white tie looks even better now that it's finished.  The best part of it is that it's so simple to do!

have you gotten any more work done with the t-wing or the z-95?

Thanks guys.

The T-Wing and Z-95 are coming along slowly. I began painting the T-Wing but I think fortress gray might be a little too dark, might start over. As for the Z-95 the only thing holding me back is trying to find the right pair of wings. What I'm trying out right now is the folding wings from an Imperial Shuttle and cutting the wings so they're rectangles. If that doesn't work I'll have to buy a model kit of some sort.

This isn't really a custom, it's more like an abandoned feature. Let me say first I can't take credit for this. Unreality from Rebelscum discovered this feature, I'm just passing along the info.

Tamer if your reading this, I'm sure you'll love this one.

Anyway, if you notice on all Action Fleet AT-ATs, there are 2 wheels located on both sides, underneath. (Note the arrow)

Here's a closer look. Also, note the tiny hole as well.

On that second pic, you see 2 screws. I unscrewed them, and revealed this. (You can clearly see the wheel part now)

If you take the wheel out, you can see the tiny hole.

I took a string and tied it to the wheel. Then I put the other end through the tiny hole, and attached it to a Luke figure, and here's the result.

goldleader one... you just blew my mind with that at-at tutorial.   I actually had to get up and check my at-ats and shure enough your right, they all have it.

that is freaking awesome.  I guess it was abandoned because they never made a mold of luke with the grapler gun....   it'd be interesting to make a mini-fig with the correct pose so that it actually looked right.

Yeah it's a pretty cool feature, no idea why it was abandoned. After putting back together the AT-AT there's still room to rotate the wheel to raise or lower the figure. I just wish this feature was left in.

I am just wishing that hasbro would reinvigorate this line alltogether. I know one thing, I saw those Iron Man minihead playsets and immediately thought that perhaps they are dusting off the cobwebs of MM and AF. I think its time for a more refined Ask hasbro question.

This is great, I wish they would have made a good grappler Luke to go with it. Thanks once again for the advice. I guess Unreality too since he first found out.

I don't mean to thread jack but I saw the iron man head playsets as well and imediately thought of the micro-machine playsets!  however the iron man figures that come with it are almost 1 inch tall and reminded me of the small "unleashed" star wars "sculptures"...  or the holographic pack ins that came with some of the saga figs.   The just aren't small enough to remind me of true micro-machines!
come to think of it the only things that I've seen that come close to the micromachines were the han and chewie mini-figs that came with the Mel. Falcon transformer...

Been a while, eh?  ;D

I've been slowly getting back into the swing of customizing. I finally finished my Gold 4 Y-Wing. This is based off of Lt. Lepira's Y-Wing, the large scale Y-Wing which was a Toys R Us Exclusive. This has been repainted, and I'm including a comparison shot of the original Gold Leader Y-Wing and the new Gold 4 Y-Wing.

(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5996/pic0988i.jpg) (http://img163.imageshack.us/i/pic0988i.jpg/)

(http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/6505/pic0990.jpg) (http://img535.imageshack.us/i/pic0990.jpg/)

(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/277/pic0993.jpg) (http://img163.imageshack.us/i/pic0993.jpg/)

I also have figures for it as well. For Lt. Lepira, I took a Luke figure and painted his gloves and boots black, and painted that red stripe on his helmet white but left the 2 red circles. He almost has the same helmet as Luke. For the droid I spray painted it white, all I have to do is add the yellow markings.

HEY I've seen that before!  I'd almost forgot you had it! lol
It looks AWESOME!  Great color choices, loads better than what I'd picked out for it.  I knew sending it to you to complete was going to be worth it.
I still only have one qualm about it and that is that the landing gear holes in the engine pannels need covering.  I would even just say to cover them with slats or something to make them look like vents, that way you don't have to completely fill them in...

but nonetheless, still 1000 times better than I'd have done on the paintwork.

Thanks guys. I just ordered some more paint so in the next few days I can resume.

A little note regarding why I was away: earlier in the year I had some family issues as my Dad went through some hard times, everything just piled on top of him at once. Helping him took a bit of a tole on me, then little by little I started losing interest which is why I was away for a while. I would pop on very briefly but that would be about it. I do apologize for my absence, we have such great people here, I should have left a post or something letting everyone know what was going on.

Anyway...

Thanks again Spud for sending this out to me, you did a hell of a job with the kitbash! I've been wondering what to fill those engine holes with, what are slats? Also I had half of it painted with fortress gray, but I thought it was too dark so I started over. The body is now space wolves gray, but the nose, laser cannons and engines were left with fortress gray.

My customs list can now be found on page 1, the first post, so check there for updates.

hmmm... by "slats" I just mean like little bars or plastic squares set in at an angle to make the holes look like vents of somekind.  Like an intake vent or a heat exchanger or something.  I was thinking about something that might be easier to do than covering the holes completely.

The list on page 1 has been updated.

Does anyone remember the black X-Wing pilot from Jedi, his only line was "She's gonna blow!" If not, here's a link to refresh your memories.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Grizz_Frix (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Grizz_Frix)

But anyway, seeing Hasbro is making a figure of him soon and its been revealed that he flew as Red Five at Endor, I was thinking of making Grizz Frix's X-Wing. I would need a Luke Red 5 X-Wing and a Biggs Red 3 X-Wing. I would take the engines off Red 5, and swap them with the Red 3 engines. Why? When it showed Grizz in his X-Wing you could see the red rings on the engines, and the Red 3 X-Wing was the only X-Wing to be released with red rings on them. As for the figures, for Grizz I can take a Gold Leader figure and paint his face brown, as he has the same helmet as Gold Leader. For his droid see below.

(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6749/496613571067dd55eb35.jpg) (http://img338.imageshack.us/i/496613571067dd55eb35.jpg/)

What do you guys think? I know its not much of a custom (compared to my others) but the reason I don't want to add any paint to the X-Wing is because I want it to look like the other X-Wings, as if it just came out of the box.

They need to make a figure of Green leader, the A-Wing pilot who died, but took out the Executor.

In action figure form or in action fleet? They released an A-Wing with Green Leader figure in The Legacy Collection line. As for action fleet form, the red and green A-Wings that were released referred to the figure as "Rebel Pilot", however the flightsuit both figures wore were the same as Green Leader's.

Does anyone remember my Assault Gunboat custom I had in the works? Well I finally found some parts for D. Now I just need parts for E.

(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9886/ag2.jpg) (http://img294.imageshack.us/i/ag2.jpg/)

A:  Body from X-Wing
B:  Top wing from a Shuttle
C:  Folding wings from a Shuttle
D:  F-4F3 Wildcat Wings (see below)
E:  Still looking

Here are the wings I found off ebay for D

GL1, for E you could scratch build the box sections using foamcore, then coating it in polystyrene  sheeting.

Small update on the Royal Guard Interceptor. I originally painted this with just a paint brush when I first did it but I felt like I could improve it. Plus I never added the white markings to it so I just decided to redo it. I'm doing it the same way as I did my white TIE Fighter - I spray painted the whole thing, now I'm repainting the panels black, adding the white markings to the laser cannons and wings, and touching up the cockpit as well as the engines.

(http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6063/pic1033.jpg) (http://img832.imageshack.us/i/pic1033.jpg/)

(http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/7575/pic1035.jpg) (http://img541.imageshack.us/i/pic1035.jpg/)

I'd say its about 50% done.

hmmm.... never liked the white coloring on the royal gaurd tie fighter.  I accented mine with silver and black only and left off the white.  But if your trying to stay true to the titanium model it looks superb!

I can't wait to see your gunboat custom.  I'm sure that if you got some styrene sheets (or cheap for-sale sign plastic) that you could whip up a couple missile boxes pretty easy.  any chance you could post a wip or two when you start puting it together?

The Royal Guard Interceptor and Blue A-wing are almost done, but I decided to take a break and do some X-wing work. Finally touched up Hobbie's Red Four X-wing and added some weathering to it. This is my first vehicle I've ever weathered (although I've practiced on some spares). I think it came out good but I'll leave that up to you guys.   :)

(http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/1/pic1039.jpg) (http://img831.imageshack.us/i/pic1039.jpg/)

(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/258/pic1041h.jpg) (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/pic1041h.jpg/)

(http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/8739/pic1050.jpg) (http://img230.imageshack.us/i/pic1050.jpg/)

(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1513/pic1056.jpg) (http://img202.imageshack.us/i/pic1056.jpg/)

(http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7633/pic1048.jpg) (http://img823.imageshack.us/i/pic1048.jpg/)

(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/1359/pic1046k.jpg) (http://img163.imageshack.us/i/pic1046k.jpg/)

Someone asked me on youtube why I chose Hobbie for my Red Four custom, as opposed to someone else like Wes Janson. My reason is because Hobbie always seems to be given the number 4 in a squadron. Rogue Four at Hoth, Red Four at Endor, Red Four again in the Starfighters of Adumar book, etc. Plus it gave me an excuse to weather it and make it look battle weary, as Hobbie is always crashing whatever ship he touches lol. Hobbie has the same helmet as Gold Leader, so instead of a Gold Leader figure, a B-wing pilot figure was used for Hobbie. The B-wing pilot has the same helmet as Gold Leader, but the B-wing pilot is a no-name pilot.

Sometimes I think I research stuff too much..

Enjoy!

Thanks for the kind replies guys. I just really wish the wings would stay open. I must have messed something up when I tried to take it apart. Oh well. The good thing about redoing it is I can reuse the engines and laser cannons, so that will save me some time when I redo it. Also, I managed to repaint an extra figure I had to make him Corran Horn. I still need an extra R2 Unit for Whistler. Please keep in mind these figures are very hard to paint. With the naked eye, these figures look pretty decent. With my camera it picks up the hard to reach areas.

Corran Horn

Dave the figures are sweet bro! What brand paint did you order? One suggestion, it looks like your paints need to be thinned a bit and applied in 3 layers to cover everything. If you paint straight out of the bottle it dries really quick and tends to clump a bit. Give it a try next time and see how it works for you.
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's Custom Vehicles
Post by: Goldleaderone on October 06, 2010, 07:03:56 AM
Thanks guys. Luke, I'm using Games Workshop Paints. If you hold the figure at a length like you're reading a book they look fine. I think it partially  may be how the figures are sculpted too. With the second figure I did have to give it a coat more as it was a lighter color. How do I thin the paints? I've been painting straight from the bottle since I started customizing lol.
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's Custom Vehicles

A few people have asked me about this so I will take more pics on the next custom and do a quick tutorial. I am by no means the master at this but have figured out what works for me. I use condiment cups, small paper cups, some use a paper plate whatever you like. I put 2 drops of water in the cup then dip a mediun size brush in my paint about 6-10 times putting the paint in my cup each time. Then i mix it with the brush untill it looks right. To me that depends on what you are working on. Some things you want thicker paint so it doesn't creep anywhere you don't want it to. Then I paint until the mixed paint is gone, cleaning my brush when paint starts drying on it. I also like to start by painting the figure black then adding color over the top leaving some black to define things. If I want something to be shiney or anything white I thin with windex, the same amount as before. It adds a shiney hard layer when you use it and protects the paint at the same time. I know the figures are small and you have done a fine job with them. Just wanted to help if I can, give it a shot on your next custom!

So I'll be working on this in the next few days. It's a TIE Experimental M3, or "TIE Warhead". It was part of the TIE Experimental Project and it's only appearance was Star Wars: X-wing Alliance for the PC.

I'm gonna leave them the color they are now. When they came in they were in 4 pieces (2 side pieces, front and back cover) and a dark gray color. I glued them together and repainted them with space wolves gray.

That looks awesome Dave! I seriously love the look of this ship! As far as paint goes To be accurate you would need to paint the Tie the same color as the cannons. Get on it Dave! hahaI looks great as is.

VERY cool. Those missile tubes worked flawlessly for this ship.

although I agree that they should be painted to match, they look odd and out of place (of course this is a "prototype experimental" so looking like an after-thought add on isn't horrible....)

GL1, that looks fantastic!

I know that you said you are keeping colour as is, but mate, you've done such a spot on job getting the pods to match, why not paint them to match the Tie scheme!

Anyhow, if you leave them as is you've still done a remarkable job!

Thanks Jules. I've been thinking of repainting it now. If I can find some paint for the pods that match the Interceptor I'll do that. If not I'll just repaint the TIE with the color I used on the pods.

It's nice to have a custom from one of your favorite games.   ;D

Agreed on the custom...

The tie looks to be a blue/grey...Why not try mixing blue and black until you get the nearest tone...perhaps adding a touch of green....

Looks good to me. I would think you could go either way with the color too. Either match the ship or leave em like they are.

Wouldn't it be cool to see a skull and crossbones on the sides of these pods! I know, I know you want to keep it game accurate.

Worked on something very minor this weekend. My X-wing custom for Wedge as Red Leader for the Battle of Endor lacked... something. For the custom all I did before was take 1 red stripe off each wing with nail polish remover. Looking at it lately I wanted to add something to it, and I had an extra Red Three X-wing laying around. The Red Three X-wing is the only X-wing to come with red rings around the engines. I ended up swapping the engines off, and I think it looks better now.

*dusts off my thread*

Wow almost a whole year since I posted in here? I've been more of a lurker lately, but I have been here. I've been getting back into customizing a bit, although rather slowly.

Anyway, my newest custom I'm working on is Corran Horn's X-wing. But wait, didn't I already do a Corran Horn X-wing? Yes, but that was in Action Fleet form. Recently I have picked up another Red Leader X-wing and will be painting that, using the Action Fleet paint job I did as a "blueprint". I've been wanting to do this ever since I painted my extra Corran Horn figure's flightsuit green. Having a green suited Horn pilot a green X-wing would be awesome.

The X-wing

Ready for painting!

Laser cannons have been removed, the red stickers have been peeled off (a huge pain btw), used nail polish remover to remove the 'tacky stuff' left by the stickers, and landing gear has been taped over.

The cockpit will be taped over and I will start painting tomorrow!

Thanks guys. Tamer, maybe if I decide to sell my collection some day (and thats a BIG if haha).  :-P

Here's some progress on the X-wing.

Just spray painted it today, waiting for it to dry to see if I missed any areas. Good thing I looked it over before I spray painted it, I forgot about the astromech socket. Not that it would really matter but I didn't want drips of green paint in there. Stuffed some paper towels in the socket and taped up the cockpit. Afterwards I'd like to paint the engines black, as well as the 'nose' of the X-wing. I'd like to also paint a black stripe on top going from the cockpit to the nose. Any other details, I'll have to see.

The wings will be worked on last, still trying to get the gunk off from the stickers. They still seem to be a little sticky.

Alright Dave! You are back in the customizing mood eh? Looking good so far, wondering if it should be a shade darker? Did you use primer first?
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's Custom Vehicles
Post by: Goldleaderone on February 26, 2012, 09:07:23 PM
Thanks Luke. I think it may look brighter cause of the flash. I'm using Hunter Green, the same color that I used on the Action Fleet X-wing I did.

For the primer I didn't use it. I've actually never used primer for any of my customs, I've never had a problem. However I do have the matt varnish spray, which is a clear protecting coating and prevents chipping. Would you recommend I use the primer?

Title: Re: Goldleaderone's Custom Vehicles
Post by: Luke Sprywalker on February 27, 2012, 06:37:15 AM
I like spraying with a primer first to get an even base color and the paint will stick better to a primer than it does plastic. I have done vehicles both ways and I am just happier with the results when I prime first. On the green, I bet you are right, a flash would make it look not as dark. I also use Krylon dull clear to seal it up.

Ah gotcha. I also spray painted this in my basement, where I was under a light as well. The pic of the AF X-wing was taken in my room. I'll have to compare them when I get home to see. I'm at my morning job now, I should have some time in between jobs to work on it.

Hey, great job on this X-wing so far (and the Corran figure from before if I didn't mention it!)
What type of paint are you using here and what type of paint did you use on the figure??

If you're having trouble with the "goo" residue from the stickers, I can suggest Goo Gone.  That stuff works great, doesn't melt the plastic.  It really does wonders with Hasbro paints and stickers.  I would apply some first to see how much it cleans off, then go further as needed.  Give the whole wing a good washing in warm water+soap.  Repeat as needed, and that should end your goo problems.

Make sure if you do use Goo Gone that you clean it off very well, as you're not using a primer, it will do the "hair spray weathering trick" if you simply paint over it without cleaning it off and leave splotches and peel off.  You'll know it's all gone after washing as it has it's own chemically scent...

cheers!

Thanks for the tip Eagle!

For the figure I used Games Workshop Paints. For the X-wing I used Hunters Green spray paint. Not sure of the brand, but I believe I picked it up from a craft store. As for the wings I can still use the primer as they haven't been painted yet.

I'm still at work and I really want to work on this lol.

Just a minor update..

I missed 2 small spots in between the wings so I spray painted those real quick. While that was drying, I tried the warm water & soap method for the wings and it worked like a charm! It beats using the nail polish remover. Thanks again Eagle!

Thanks Wookie. I have painted Corran, but I'll probably leave Whistler as is, I have no experience painting astromechs.

Here's my custom Corran Horn that will be used for the X-wing, compared to the stock version

And my Action Fleet Corran Horn X-wing

I had one done before but the wings didn't stay open and then I spilled crazy glue on one of the wings. The Action Fleet version is just about done, and will be the basis for the 1:18 X-wing, more or less.

Also, Shadows is my favorite EU timeline, with the Rogue Squadron novels a close second.

Dave, you have to paint up a proper Whistler! Check my thread or Jay's astromech directory would be faster. I have a proper Whistler in there for reference. It is a challenge but not that hard. You need some model masters or the equivilant white paint and water it down so it doesn't get chalky on you. You have to do it man!

They are very good paints. Wraithnine introduced me to them.

More progress on the X-wing. This is just a little teaser, I'd say its about 90% done.

What happened was I ran out of the Hunter Green spray paint, so I took a trip to the craft store where I got it. Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock, so I'm gonna have to order online. I had another Hunter Green, but in a different brand, and as you can see it made the wings glossy (the wings were the only thing left to spray paint). I even used a gray primer for the wings before spraying it with the green. However I used the primer for the laser cannons and I think they look good.

All that needs touching up are the wings, which I will spray over with the primer, then spray again when I get the Hunter Green I've been using. Lastly I need to touch up the cockpit area. What I have done is I searched ebay for a spare X-wing canopy. I got one for cheap, so what I will do is swap the canopy, spray the area, then swap the canopy again so that there is no damage to the one I'm using.

The X-wing looks excellent!! :)

If you use Testors Dullcote it will knock the glossy effect right out and should even out the look of the green paints...the stuff is amazing!

Excelent advice botwt, just what I was going to say. If it doesn't work, you don't have to prime again. You have already bonded to the plastic so just spray over the existing green.

Glad to hear everything worked out ok for you on this, it looks AWESOME.  I have zero knowledge about Corran Horn other than his unique style sense.  Never read the books or comics with him, but the online debate about his colors/facial hair, and his droid having a name instead of numbers/letters (Whistler!) attracted my attention.

Again, this looks awesome.  Such a great job!!

Still waiting for my Hunter Green spray paint, so in the meantime I have finished the Action Fleet Corran Horn X-wing. I already had one painted up before, but the wings never stayed open. My Hunter Green spray paint came in the mail yesterday. I sprayed over the areas that were left over, and put the finishing touches on it today. You may see some scuff marks on it, but those unfortunately were already on the ship. I bought this used off ebay, wheres the new Red Leader X-wing I got off Rebelscum was straight out of the box. For my customs I like to use ships that are in used-good condition. My stock items I like in just about perfect condition.

Some minor differences between the two.

AF Version:  Front of engines are a light gray, canopy is black, no black stripes on the sides of the ship.

1:18 Scale:  Front of engines are kept green, canopy is gray, black stripes are now on the sides of the ship.

Hope you all enjoy!

I did one last and minor detail to my Action Fleet Corran Horn X-wing. Up until now, the droid I was using was a standard black and white R2 unit. I didn't want to paint it as fear of the paint eventually chipping, even though I do have the matt varnish to seal it up. For a while I have been after the Action Fleet Naboo Hangar/Final Combat playset. I have seen that it can get a bit pricey, but I got a great deal on it.

But you guys know I only collect from the OT. See the little circle up top? Here's a closer look. I was after the playset for this.

I was able to get a pair of pliers and easily pull the R2 unit from the peg. This is the final result

Now I have a "stock" R2 unit acting as Whistler for my X-wing. It's a minor detail, but definitely adds to it I think.

What a hassle that was. I forgot when I organized my photobucket account, a lot of my pics in here were removed. I went through the thread and re-uploaded almost all the pics. I also updated my customs list on page 1. I have removed a few planned customs as I know they won't get done and I have lost interest in that specific project (there weren't many - under 5). I organized the headers, no more Rebel/Imperial/Neutral Craft headers. They are organized by size - Action Fleets, Large Scale, etc. I just skip a line to distinguish Rebel/Imperial/Neutrals.

I added a few new customs to the list, all large scale. I have a few things I'm looking to sell again on ebay. I know I'll get decent money for them. When I do, I can buy the ships and start working on them. Here's the list:

Blue Squadron Y-Wing:  This is based off the squadron that attacked the Suprosa from Shadows of the Empire. SOTE is my favorite EU story. The only "true" Blue Squad Y-Wing we have is the Action Fleet version, but its not based from Shadows. I want to buy another Gold 4 Y-Wing and repaint the gold markings blue, and paint the R5 unit red. Besides Shadows, I am basing it off a level in X-Wing Alliance as well, where you actually get to take part in the mission. In-flight, your R5 unit has red markings. The reason I want to use another Gold 4 Y-Wing - I love the weathering on it. The new Y-W has a targeting computer, and whenever I think of targeting computer, I think of the trench run from A New Hope. However I do like the orange paint job they gave on the piping of the new Y-W, and might do the same on this one.

Snowspeeder - Red/Orange markings:  A simple one. I want to get another Vintage Collection Snowspeeder and paint it with the traditional red/orange markings... providing I can find another one.

Dash Rendar's (updated) Outrider:  A ship that BADLY needs an update (looking at you too Dash!). Who's brilliant idea was it to give the Outrider features from a B-Wing?? I love the ship, but Kenner, you screwed this one up royally. It's a shame the only accurate Outrider we have is the Micro Machines version. I want to buy another one before attempting this one. Here's a link where I go in detail of what I want to do:  http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=9090.0

That should be it really. Again, it'll be a few weeks before I can start up on one of these. Stay tuned.

Thanks guys. I feel like repaints are my strong point lol.

While I wait on some ebay auctions for ships to customize, I was going through my bin of Action Fleet parts and found two Red 3 X-Wings. On one, the wings didn't stay open properly. On the other, the engines were broken off. I took a screwdriver and opened up both, and swapped the small bands that hold the wings together from the broken one to the other. The wings stay open properly now, and I can finally start a custom I've had planned for so long but never got around to - Rookie One's Blue Three X-Wing from Rebel Assault. I never played the game, but I've always liked the character.

Stay tuned.

EDIT:  There isn't much left of the blue paint I have, and what is left looks to be a bit goopy. In the meantime I'll be working on a white Darth Vader TIE Fighter, similar to the original white TIE I painted a while back.

sometimes... if the paint isn't too old and it is acrylic you can add a little water to the paint... OR clear acrylic paint and mix it together to revive it a little.

Can't wait to see it when it's done!  You know I love me some action fleet action!

I've also been watching ebay for action fleet auctions... I passed up an amazing one several months back that had several rare items in it...  I hate myself for not bidding on it... I just didn't have the money.  I think my OTC collection will never be complete :(
I feel like, at least for the action fleet stuff, it's getting to the point in it's life where the people who are now seperating with their action fleet vehicles are of 2 types: 1) they found old toys and are trying to get rid of them (which also means they are broken, missing pieces, horrible condition, etc) or 2) they are serious collectors who know what they are worth and are asking prices reflected upon their worth (which means they are in great condition but way out of my budget!)...  and not only that... but the people doing the collecting, the people purchasing these items are the serious collectors who REALLY WANT what they are bidding on and are willing to pay those prices...  even for the crappy auctions... :/   All around I've had bad luck trying to get anything here lately...

Sorry for the hijacking rant....

White Vader TIE coming along, about 90% done. Probably another day it should be done.

I thought about the water technique but I'm just afraid I'll run out of paint.   :-\

I think the hard part of doing the Blue 3 X-Wing will be painting those red rings around the engines blue. The 3 stripes won't be hard, but annoying if anything lol.

I agree with you 100% about action fleets on ebay. I've been noticing lately that they're going for a lot more then they were a few years ago. I had a similar discussion on Rebelscum the other day. It's a shame we have to resort to ebay, usually with the inflated prices now. Even the toy/collectible store in the mall over here, wanted $15 for a boxed Action Fleet Vader TIE from the Saga 2002 line. The previous week I saw a loose one on ebay for under $10. When I built my collection back up after stupidly selling them, I was very patient and even went to a few collectible shows. I picked up an Imperial Landing Craft, boxed for $10. Through another collecting site, I managed to get the green emblem-less A-wing for $15, however I found out it was the emblem-less one when I got it in the mail, so naturally I geeked out.

Just gotta be patient, eventually you'll complete your collection. I would be on ebay constantly, looking stuff up like I was doing a report for school lol. Keep at it, I got faith in ya!

Unfortunately my bank account doesn't have faith in me!  lol.  I can't justify purchasing them....  I aught to do like you suggest and look for the individual pieces I need to complete the collection... but I tend to go after lots that have extras in them so that I can customize :P

in my later years I've become more focused on customizing rather than collecting, so I tend to spend my money on stuff for projects instead of trying to complete a collection that is going to stay sitting on a shelf!  I get more enjoyment out of working on a unique one-off project to make them my own!  It's a struggle... lol.

as for re-painting the blue on the y-wing... have you tried using mineral spirits to remove the old paint first?  SOMETIMES that works.... other times it makes things worse.

my other recommendation would be to paint over the red with a primer color, or black first before putting down the new color.  Although when you are trying to get perfect lines and not bleed over onto other parts of the ship that can be more work than it's worth with these small scale vehicles...

Alright cool, I'll look into that as well. Also gonna look into the epoxy glue. I talked to wookie-balls and he gave me some pointers as well. Still a noob here when it comes to things like that.

Vader's white TIE is on hold, the damn wings were broken off. They won't fit on properly when trying to attach them back on. Always something lol. I'll look into getting another one. The paint job I did, I wasn't really too happy with either.

I found another Outrider at the local collectible store here so I picked it up for my custom. I came home and asked my Dad for some help with cutting off the pieces I outlined before. Let's face it, I'd rather have a busted ship then lose some fingers lol. He used to do construction so he's got the proper tools. I think it came out alright. It's quite a ways away from being finished though, I still need to get the sculpting clay to fill in the gaps and I'm probably going to give it another paint job.

Spudafett and wookie-balls gave me some pointers to use epoxy glue. I've been asking them how to use it and what to do because I'm a total noob. The best part was when I asked my Dad if he's ever used it, he's said yea haha. He's used it before to glue mirrors back on cars. Anyway here's the progress so far.

I was going through the Citadel paint conversion chart, they changed a lot of paint names around. A lot, if not all the paint names when I started using them are named something different now. Anyway, remember the TIE Experimental M3 custom I did from X-Wing Alliance? It was a TIE Interceptor with rocket pods on the side. I was looking at the paint chart and I finally found one or two colors that closely resemble the color of the Interceptor. I just would like some input because I'm constantly going back and forth between the two.

Celestra Gray

Fenrisian Gray

TIE Experimental M3

I honestly can't decide lol.

Many Bothans died to bring us this information..

All 3 of my paints that I needed for this custom came in the mail yesterday. I was able to knock out this custom, my very own Blue Squadron Y-Wing. To me, its more then a simple repaint. This Y-Wing is based on the squadron that attacked the Suprosa from Shadows of the Empire. SOTE is my favorite EU story, which prompted me to create this.

I went a little more in depth with this custom. I researched material regarding this Y-Wing before customizing it. In the comics, the Y-Wings are shown without blue paint, but have some orange markings on the body of the ship. I know comics aren't exactly known for having every detail on every page. In the video game X-Wing Alliance (a favorite of mine) you actually fly in one of the vacant Y-Wings. These Y-Wings do have blue paint, and the blue bands on the engines are much larger then the yellow bands found on this original Y-Wing. Also, your R5 unit has red markings. This R5 had yellow markings, but was a bit discolored. I took a flathead screwdriver and easily popped the head off. I swapped it with Porkins' R5 unit, and repainted the silver panels on top red so it looks like a basic R5 unit. Now it matches the R5 in the game.

So basically I took all the info I found and just combined everything. Now I just need a Bothan pilot. Without further ado here is the Bothan Blue Squadron

Thanks guys. I got both Y-Wings on my chair here, they just look awesome next to each other. I'm very happy with the shade of blue that I used, and I think the orange piping really adds to it.  I mentioned it in my video but I forgot to say it here, I used a gray primer on the laser cannons. I easily pulled them out and sprayed them, and I actually liked how the gray looked so I left it. Lastly I dabbed a bit of black paint on the tips.

Had to take a little break from customizing as I was busy for the past 2 weeks with training at my new job. The training wore me out, as it was at night and I would come right home, go to bed and go to work in the morning.

I just sat down to start customizing my Snowspeeder and the paint is the wrong shade. On paper, Jokaero Orange looks about perfect. I tested it out and it looks like a tan/light brown color. Definitely not even close. I'll probably start on Rookie One's Blue 3 X-wing instead in the next day or so.

After getting the wrong color paint in the mail, I bought a new color which I think best matched what I needed for this custom. This is a Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder from the 2010 Vintage Line, but customized with the traditional redish-orange markings we are accustomed to seeing. Even though we have Zev's Rogue 2 Snowspeeder, I wanted to do this custom because I loved how this one was built. It's much more sturdy, well put together, and a better size I think. With that, it made all the more sense to customize it with the redish-orange markings.

In the first few pics, I have the smaller cannons on. In the last pic, which is what I have currently, has the custom with the second, larger set of cannons. I always preferred the smaller set of cannons, but this custom gave me an excuse to use the second set and not lose them. The color I used was Wild Rider Red from Games Workshop Paints.  The list on page 1 has been updated again.

Recently started working again on Dash Rendar's Outrider. With the epoxy putty I found I was able to fill in the gaps I had previously cut off (with the help of my Dad). I filled in 2 areas in the back (on each side of the engine), on the side of the cockpit which faces the body of the ship, the side of the gun turrent, and on the other side getting rid of the large missile launcher.

I feel like the areas I filled in could have been a bit better. Maybe this weekend I'll see if I can file them down so it looks a bit better or find some styrene sheet, cut the necessary size piece and place it over the epoxy putty. This is my first time working with the stuff, I think I did an ok job so far. Lastly I'm going to give the Outrider a new paint job.

The last pic is what its going to look like, the final design.

It's been a while since I did an Action Fleet custom. I thought I would have this done tonight but I'm low on the silver I use and can't find it on ebay at the moment. I may have to buy another brand.

Here's my work in progress: Action Fleet TIE Fighter from The Force Awakens

I plan on repainting the panels on the wings silver, then adding a dab of red on the laser cannons.

I decided to take some Shipyarders advice from a while back and update my TIE Experimental M3, or "TIE Warhead" custom. Back then all I did was repaint the rocket pods (from a Warhammer 40K set) which came in a very dark gray color. I never had a color that matched the TIEs so I was stuck. Finally I found Celestra Gray and used that to repaint the whole TIE Interceptor, as well as the rocket pods. I dabbed a bit of red paint on the back, and repainted the back of the engine black. Some paint got on the black panels, and I easily painted them back to black. Lastly I super glued the pods to the sides of the TIE and sprayed it with a matt varnish spray to prevent chipping.

So I present to you my (updated) TIE Experimental M3, or "TIE Warhead" custom from X-Wing Alliance.

I recently purchased a TIE Droid resin kit from Scale Solutions on ebay. This came in 3 parts, the 2 wings and the main body of the ship. First I washed it with dish soap as it was a bit greasy. I let it sit overnight, then primed it with some black spray paint from Games Workshop Paints. Again I let it sit but for 2 days this time. Lastly I gave it a blueish-gray paint job with the color Fenrisian Gray. I also added in some gray details around the cockpit and the back with Codex Gray. For the first time painting a resin kit, I think I did an alright job.

Ever since playing Rogue Squadron I always wanted a TIE Droid in Action Fleet form. This TIE Droid is in scale with the other Action Fleet TIEs, so this is close enough. A very cool piece. I'm just trying to figure out how to get it on an Action Fleet stand now.

That looks a tad bit small, but exactly like the kit I was thinking about.   The Tie-D was supposed to be smaller than the ties, so it makes sense.

There was someone that was selling just the wings in a kit that could go onto the action fleet models I think...

I agree that its a bit on the small side. However I'm very happy with it and definitely recommend it. I've always been a fan of this design. Now if they made a TIE Advance/Avenger model.

I went to Home Depot today with a friend to get some plexiglass for my Action Fleet shelves. Hopefully tomorrow he's coming over to help put them up. We bought hinges and everything, and I'll get pictures up when they're done. While I was there I picked up a small pvc pipe for my TIE Droid resin kit. I thought about drilling a hole in the bottom for a stand, but didn't want to run the risk of ruining it. The pipe was like 50 cents. Here's a quick look, and I plan on spraying it black so it matches the other AF stands.

I recently picked up the Outrider from the X-wing Miniatures game set. While it looks cool, I have no interest in playing this game but have found the ships to have some awesome detail. The only area lacking was the engine. As you can see, its black so it definitely looks bland. I took some ice blue paint from games workshop paints and touched it up, giving it some "engine glow" color. The Micro Machines and titanium versions of the Outrider have a light blue color on the engine, so seeing this not have any color seemed out of place. It's very minor, but it definitely makes it stand out a bit more I think.

"Chewie... we're home."

This is my custom Action Fleet Millennium Falcon from The Force Awakens. Not much was done but sometimes its the simplest things that make it. The radar dish is from the new Micro Machines Falcon playset that transforms into Jakku. I got some pliers and easily pulled out the old dish. The new dish was a perfect fit. No modifications to Chewie, but I painted Han's hair gray and painted over the yellow stripes on his pants black.

I've finally done more work with my First Order TIE Fighter. My deadline for this was before TFA was released but that didn't happen lol. This was my 3rd attempt and it looks like I got it down this time. What I did this time was I sprayed it with a gray primer, as the panels would be left gray. The biggest hassle came next, I taped over all the panels and sprayed it with a black primer. I had a spare cockpit window that I placed over the TIE's cockpit so it wouldn't get hit with paint. Lastly I peeled off the tape, all I have to do now is some touch-ups where the tape overlapped.

And in keeping up with the Galoob Action Fleets of 2 figures per ship, the figures for my custom will be a TIE Pilot and General Hux. For Hux I used an Action Fleet Imperial Officer figure from the Classic Duels Falcon vs. TIE Interceptor set, the officer with the suitcase. I removed the suitcase and super-glued a cape from a Vader figure. Here's a quick look.

I've had this on the back burner since the middle of last summer. I've finally completed my custom Action Fleet First Order TIE Fighter from The Force Awakens.

The two figures included are a First Order TIE Pilot and General Hux.

I recently picked up the Micro Machines Falcon playset that transforms into Jakku. I got it for $11 on clearance at Walmart. With how cheap it is I figured I'd use it for custom purposes. Just trying to test weathering it, giving it a battle worn look. I just did a simple dry brush with black and added in some silver marks as a blast effect.

Just wanted to get some opinions on how it looks. Constructive criticism is welcomed as this is my first time doing this so just looking to get all the help I can. Thanks!

I did some more work on my custom TFA Millennium Falcon tonight. With testing my weathering skills on the Falcon/Jakku Micro Machines playset, I wanted to give it a go on the Action Fleet version. I used the Galoob Falcon, as I thought the Saga 2002 Falcon from Hasbro was too dark. This way I can weather it until I feel its the right amount.

I weathered it and dry brushed the ship with some black paint. I went darker at the back of the ship on top, towards the engine. In TFA there's a few shots on Jakku where the same area is quite dark. I weathered the rest of the ship just enough so it's noticeable, with the front and underside a bit darker then the rest of the ship. I also added in blast effects towards the front of the ship and near the new sensor dish. I dry bushed those areas with black and made the area bigger, and also added in some silver for the blast effects. Lastly I painted in 3 small circles, on both sides of the top laser cannon dark gray, just to give it a bit more detail.

I would like to dry brush the top at least once more. I thought I wouldn't be happy with it but I'm actually pretty pleased with how it turned out. I just need a Finn and Rey and I can officially close the book on this custom.

That would be rad, in the old Action Fleet style! With the little clip-on legs and swinging arms! Hee hee!

Wish I still had those from when I was a kid. Shoot, I wish they were making them now instead of this die-cast nonsense.

Tonight I weathered up TFA Millennium Falcon. I thought it was just too bland looking. The circles in the front, and the square pieces near the cockpit and rear of the ship I dry brushed with black until the area was filled. Then I dry brushed again with some gray so it wasn't too dark. Really happy with the end result.

Thanks Starchaser! Usually I don't like doing work like that unless I have two. In this case, it needed some work done to it and I didn't mind. I'm much happier with it now.

And yes, I'm currently working on an Action Fleet custom U-wing. It will be in the "open" position. I do prefer the closed position but due to limited resources the wings be sticking out, in flight mode.

Here is my custom Red Squadron Resistance X-wing, during the Battle of Starkiller Base from The Force Awakens. You can see a few Red Squadron X-wings from a deleted scene where they are preparing to enter lightspeed. I still need to touch up some minor details, most notably around the front of the engines. Apart from that this is the final product.

I doubt Hasbro will make one of these.

Here is something I quickly did today. I took the Disney Store Millennium Falcon and converted it into a The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon. It's just more then a simple radar dish swap. I had to do some dremeling and put some parts together to make it work. I feel the Titanium Ultra line from Hasbro in 2005 is far superior then Disney's. Now I'm not knocking Disney's line, I do like them. I just feel like Disney's line is somewhat of a continuation of the titanium ships, and that I would be buying doubles.

The radar dish I'm using is from the Millennium Falcon "value line" that was recently released. I was very disappointed with that Falcon, but it gave me the oppertunity to use the radar dish here.

Here's a step by step guide of how I did it:

First, using a dremel I took off the radar dish and the part it was attached to

Then, where the radar dish was, I dremeled a hole inside (which will come in use later)

I took a spare laser cannon from an Action Fleet X-wing from my parts bin, and cut the middle piece off (where the arrow is)

I cut off the clip that was on the radar dish as it wouldn't fit to my liking. I took the part of the laser cannon and cut the piece in half. Not exactly a clean cut, but that part will be on the inside anyway. I dremeled a little bit on the underside of the radar dish, and super-glued the laser cannon part inside. Then I spray painted it with a gray primer that was actually a close color match to the Falcon

Lastly, I put some tacky material around the laser cannon to tighten up the radar dish, as it was still quite loose. Complete!

I finally learned the wash technique, and after a few runs I applied it to the Rogue One U-wing and TFA Millennium Falcon Revell kits. I never realized just how easy this was, and now I'm looking to go back and apply some washes to some of my past customs. These ships needed a wash, they were practically white, especially the U-wing.

Thanks! I use Games Workshop Paints. I use Abaddon Black, and just take some of the paint and dip it into a cup of warm water until I have the right amount. I brush it on, and the brush I use has the bristles spread out. It works better then a normal brush. I let it sit for about 30 seconds, then wipe it off. Repeat as necessary.

I bought the Revell Rogue One Star Destroyer kit and applied a wash to it last night. This was another kit that was almost white. I did run out of black paint so I'm debating of giving this another wash or not when I get more. I do like how it came out but don't want it too dark.

How to change the astromech on the 30th Anniversary Y-wing without dremeling the molded-in astromech

Going through some old posts on Rebelscum, I've seen a few members dremel out the droid on this Y-wing. It was done very well and I wanted to give it a go, having just bought a dremel myself. I've got some practice under my belt, I've already been turning old figure heads into a ball-joint neck. I bought a used one on ebay, just the body of the ship, no engine parts for real cheap. I couldn't get the cuts right, the dremel kept skipping and would sometimes hit other parts of the ship. I just didn't feel comfortable doing it on the one I had. You could see afterwards all the cuts from the dremel, it would have looked obvious.

The other night I wanted to try something. On the spare Y-wing I took a flathead screwdriver and easily popped the astro off. Just place the screwdriver right under the silver ring. You will need the silver ring, as that is the part that clips into place. Taking my dremel, I cut where the silver squares are on the "neck", just above the silver ring. Keep going around until you're able to just pull it apart. (picture 1)

Then I filed down the silver ring where it was cut off, so it would be even. Lastly I super-glued it to the underside of the red R5 unit's head. The R5 head is from Disney's Build-A-Droid line. I let it set, then afterwards you can pop it back on, and it still rotates like normal. (picture 2)

I still have to clean up the area a bit around the neck. I just wanted to share, with this being another means of swapping out the astro.

I finally finished my custom Red Leader X-wing with Garven Dreis and R5-K6. I used a Biggs Red 3 X-wing, with the white bands on the engines. Red Leader's X-wing never really had any color, it was rather bland. I took it apart, and used nail polish remover to take off the red rings on the engines. Next, I painted a red stripe on both sides of the body, also connecting them in doing so. After that, I dry brushed the white bands on the engines - both the white bands in the back and front a light gray, then went over the ones in the front with a light blue. I also used the light blue for the canopy. I am basing this off of the model from Lucasfilm. I dry brushed the light gray again over 2 red stripes on the wings, then gave the ship a wash to weather it.

For the figures, I used a basic Luke figure and an R5 unit from the Yavin binoculars Micro Machines playset. I repainted the gloves and boots black. I repainted most of the helmet with a beige color. It was a skin tone color that closely matched Red Leader's helmet. I left the middle white, along with the red stripe. Finally I added in 4 red dots, 2 on each side. Lastly I repainted the R5 unit red and added in the black details.

I've been wanting to do this X-wing for the longest time, and am very happy to have it done.

The Partisan X-wing was a little tough, not gonna lie. I'm really happy with Red Leader's X-wing too. Now I plan to make John Branon's Red Four X-wing eventually, this way I'll have Reds 1-6 from the Battle of Yavin. We originally got Reds 2, 3, 5 and 6, so why not complete half the squadron I say.

Also the list on page 1 has been updated. Been a while, I forgot to keep it updated.

I picked up a TIE Striker Bandai model kit today. These are 1:72 scale (same scale as Action Fleets). While there was no painting or any custom work done, I did give it a few changes.

I dremeled a hole underneath towards the front to get it on a stand. I didn't want to, but the hole towards the back wasn't working, as there was too much weight forward.

I lost the tips to the laser cannons under the cockpit (very small). I cut off some tips from some X-wing laser cannons and just replaced them. They gave you a choice with the canopy window - black but no plastic covering, or a clear window with no black paint. I chose the clear window and just painted in the black, as the stickers were terrible for the clear canopy.

These go great with Action Fleets, so I may look into getting others. I can't fully get into another line, so I will most likely buy model kits of vehicles that weren't produced in Action Fleet form.

I stopped in Michael's Craft Store today and all they had was 3 Revell kits - the AT-ACT, TFA Falcon and Poe's X-wing. I got the Striker at a local collectible shop but feel they charged a bit more then they should have.

Here is my custom Action Fleet TIE Avenger. An Imperial Pilot is included, but I have not decided on a second figure yet.

The wings are actually different, they are from the website Shapeway, a seller was kind enough to make them for me. Vader's wings were detached, then I filed down the attachment on the body of the ship. The wings from Shapeway were spray painted black and I added in the gray details. The body of the ship was painted with the same gray. I added in some details with a darker gray, as well as some red lights in the back.

Thanks everyone! I've always wanted to make one since playing X-wing Alliance. I would try to cut up Vader's wings but they just were never coming out right. The Avenger's wings are different looking, more of a dagger look to it which is why I went through the Shapeways website.

The TIE Avenger is a very interesting TIE variant.
Excellent work my friend.
