Title: Phatty's Diorama
Post by: Phatty on October 21, 2009, 02:06:15 PM
The title is boring, because I'm not entirely sure which direction I'm heading with it just yet.  I've painted up 2 pieces in a flat black, and they're going to be made into the ISY Command Post: The checkpoint before the Shipyard Factory!  Post thoughts, suggestions, tips, etc!

Are you going to the Endor, Hoth, Ryloff, or Degobah

I'm just not sure yet.  I'm thinking of developing a storyline with a new world that suits my purposes...

You need a Hoth Gun Turret set in there, too.  Just for intimidation factor.  ;)

Hmmmm....not a bad idea either.  This portion is kinda on the back burner while I work on my contest entry for the military ground vehicle, but I'm still working ideas over in my head...

I have 3 or 4 of those Dagobah sets and what I was thinking of doing was to spay the base with adhesive, and crumble dried moss over it, similar to what I did with the endor dio, then add paint to the hut, black then a few shades of brown dry brushed on, over that add some detals of spanish moss of something similr to replicate vines or bark,   I am unsure of what theme you will be going for but you can adapt the techniques to other mediums.

Phatty, I did this to my sets...

If yours are going to be imperial, I'd possibly make the rocks a greyish. I used a stone effect spray to create a rock effect.

I started with a flat black, and for the "Imperial Hoth Base," I think I'm going to use a grey as a weathering color on it, as if it were a black rock, weathered and dulled.  I'll add some brown and green flecks in the Dagobah playset to the ground to give it a natural look, and probably go with a deep reddish brown for the tree trunk, almost a mahogany.  These are just thoughts for now, we'll see how it looks when I start to flesh it out.

I done went and spent too much money at Hobby Lobby...

Picked up some clear drying adhesive for landscapes, some rock, and some grass.  So far, I've applied some rock to part of my diorama.  It's all still very rough, but here are some in progress works...

Nice, you bought some ballast and scenic cement! I sometimes balance out the course rock with the finer stuff that they sell. some fine sand might work for this also.  The fun comes for me when I paint the rock a dark tone and then come back and drybrush over it in a lighter tone or two. Lots of times, I will apply the grass and the rock at the same time and soak it all with the scenic cement. It looks rough when the cement is wet but when it dries it looks cool as hell.
Title: Re: Phatty's Diorama
Post by: Phatty on October 29, 2009, 03:01:31 PM
I'm thinking of doing that as well.  The only fine ballast they had there was brown though, and I think it'll clash a bit with the dark, stark theme I'm going for.  The coarse ballast covers up the "snow" look to the base, so now it looks more like carved rock, which is where I'm going with it.

I also bought some fine grass effect, some green and brown enamels to go with the Dagobah set.  I was going to get some of that fake water, too, but it only came in large quantities and I don't need that much!

I just have to remember to stick to ONE project, and that's my contest entry.  I want to do it all NOW!

OOOOHHH, Looking good Phatty. I like that you are putting the extra effort into it. Do just as Clint has described with the paint techniques.

Here are the latest updates to my dio.  I'm not happy with the gravel formation I have going on, so I'm going to add another thin, sparse layer of larger rock to it to even it out more

Try adding some colored sand into it, it will fill the gaps and add some contrast. It's looking good so far.

Do you think too many colors would be too conflicting?  I don't want it to look TOO busy.
Title: Re: Phatty's Diorama
Post by: Reconsgt on November 03, 2009, 06:10:49 PM
It won't look busy,   look for a light or dark grey color, it should be fine, you could even take a hammer to a bag of the gravel in the garage to crush it into dust

Hmm...I'd have to look for a darker Grey, I believe.  That way it goes from black to light grey...Looks like I'm hitting the hobby shop tomorrow!

Pat, I have found kitty litter works just as good. Get some from big lots or the dollar tree and save big bucks. As previously stated you can make it smaller by crushing it. Various sizes is the key. Also why are you worried about the color of the material? You will be painting the whole thing right?
Title: Re: Phatty's Diorama
Post by: Phatty on November 03, 2009, 07:16:50 PM
Actually no.  The Diorama I am doing is taking place on a new world from my own imagination, a small planet inside the Maw Cluster, where the rock is black as night.  Grasslands grow above the rock, and there are bodies of water present.  The Hoth base is one that was carved out of the rock, so that's why it's all black with some rubble.

Ok, massive update here.  I've weathered the rock of the Check Point Security, and painted the tree trunk and ground of the Hut, as well as add some grass to it.  The hut will get some more grass, of a darker color and thicker flock, to make it look more realistic.  Once I get the Ewok Villiage from Clint, I'll give it a similar treatment to match.  I've also gotten my G.I. Joe Tactical Battle Platform in, but that's way back on the burner for now until I get some things caught up.  I'm not done by any stretch, as I still have to add in some details like a computer station and such to the Check Point Security, but the paint and landscaping is close[/] to being done.  So, for now, here's my latest update...

Thanks guys, I'm really liking how this is all coming out.  I tried to do some work today and had a bit of artist's block.  I added some darker green foliage to the base of the tree trunk on the dagobah piece, which is looking fantastic!

WOW....

I was'nt too sure about the black at first, but now all of the detailing is on I get it, and it looks great. I'm also loving the tree house, I especially like your use of materials.

Title: Re: Phatty's Diorama
Post by: Phatty on November 14, 2009, 05:56:25 AM
Thanks Jules!  The black was originally going to be a base color, but then it ended up looking better than I had anticipated, so I went ahead and added to it. I'm LOVING how the Imperial Attack base has come out so far, but there is now a lot of fabricating work I have to do to bring my vision to life.  As for the tree house, that too is looking great.  The wife isn't all that happy with my frequent trips and expenditures at Hobby Lobby, but what can ya do!  That one is close to done for now until I get the next phase of materials in...

Well, I printed some of the backgrounds out from Jules' Flickr folder and applied them to some foam core.  This is to build a computer room for my ISY Check Point Security diorama I'm working on.  Here are some simple shots of what I'm working with so far...

The backdrop of computer wall is going to fit into that box I made from foam core.  Unfortunately, I miscalculated and the box is too wide so far, but that's not to say it's done and over.  I have plans yet.  Then I'll attack the computers and screens to the inner back wall at an angle to simulate a desk.  I'm hoping this comes out well as in my mind, but am not liking it so far. Good thing foamboard is relatively cheap!

Thank you!  I'm hoping to get back to working on it a bit over the next couple of weeks.  I'm done for the most part with the Dagobah playset, so I need to get my Check Point Security Center done to mesh the two together, and then start on phase 3 and 4 of this massive diorama I have planned!

Ok, I finally got around to working on my dio a bit more tonight.  From my last update, you saw I was building a computer room from foamboard and sticker images courtesy of Jules.  I didn't like how the foam core stuck out so blatantly; didn't mesh well or paint well.  I bought some Super Sculpey from Hobbytown USA and rolled it into thick tubes and stuck them to the edges of the computer bay set up.  From there, I used my Xacto knife to trim out the sides and angles, giving it a rocky appearance to match the Imperial Attack Base I'm using.  I used  a hairdryer to solidify the clay, but blew a fuse, so I'm letting it sit overnight as well to harden even more.  Then I'll paint it all black and weather it with grey.  This'll give it the appearance that the computer terminal was carved from the rock as well.  here are the shots of the sculpting work thus far.  I still have to do a few more edges yet.

Same here, I find the best thing to do is just "vegitate" or rather don't even approach anything about the prject or related for a day or two (In extreame cases a week or a month).  Distract youself with a new movie or something too, nothing mindblowing just something stupid you know will be bad but your brain doesn't care (Last time it happended to me it was Undead or Alive but that movie was so bad it didin't help.
