My original thread hit 100 pages so it is time to start a new one. I am going to recap starting with my newest Mando bucket mod. I started with a Scuba Clone helmet. In the first pic I have removed the top fin, one of the tubes, sanded and primed the factory bucket.
I started adding Aves Fix-it sculpt to widen the bucket and fill in/get rid of some details.

Next I played around with range finders. I wanted to do something different so this one was inspired by Shea Visla's helmet.
I would like to hear honest opinions on the look of that helmet. I didn't like it and moved on. After looking at it for a while, if it had another small stem under the point of atachment it might look OK...
So this is what I moved on to. I used Roberto's staple rangefinder stem like on his Boba Fett. I cut a 1/2" heavy duty staple in half so I havd 2 "L" shaped pieces, that will make 2 rangefinders. I cut the plastic stem off of a factory rangefinder, sliced a slot in it for the staple, cut about 1/8" off the staple for proper height then glue the 2 pieces together. Let that dry then use a dremel with a cut off wheel, non serated, and grind the bottom end of the staple on both sides until it is almost round. Drill a hole in your helmet and insert the rangefinder.

Now I painted everything black and dry brushed it with silver.

Next I have used a stippling technique adding dark gray then a dull red.
I used a golden orange color for the details around the visor.

So what do you think, is it looking like a Mand helmet or a clone?
-
Awesome! great job!
-
Very Mando-like looks GREAT... I am curious 'bout the stipplin' technique.. is it like lightly pokin'/stabbin' the surface w/ a kinda drybrush technique...?
-
OK I fixed one of the pics, the one with the question about the alternate look.Ghostskull18 and BL4CK5H33P thanks, and have a look at the pic and let me know what you think. What I do is dip my brush in the paint and wipe it off in a McDonalds condiment cup, hey they are free! Then you kind of poke at the surface all over. In some cases I start with strokes like drybrushing then use this technique. Stippling is creating a pen and ink drawing by using dots, so it was a loose use of the term.
-
Ok, I am really digging the new bucket mod. I actually prefer the 1st, non-standard rangefinder. It could be a comm antenna or a sensor enhancer. The bucket itself looks like an "Evolutions" piece... Clone Trooper to Mando (which is ironic, since the clone buckets were based on Jango's). We know that several ARCs and RCs went "native" and ended up on Mandalore, so maybe this bucket was a clone helmet from a "stray" who modified it to be more mando'a. It'd be neat to see it on a fig whose armor reflected that also, but that's just me. Anyhow, awesome job as always. And get to work on that Trando Mando bucket next, LOL.
-
Spry, I think it looks great. I have to admit I like the standard range finder you have on it better than the other. I think that tube coming off the helmet and the new sculpt work looks good too. Time to take this to the front page.
-
I agree w/ Tamer on the rangefinder - I kinda figured that was how the stipple technique was achieved & I also use little "freebie" paint cups... mine are sourced from sugar free drink mixes - lol
-
Looking great! Can't wait to see the finished product.
-
First off, congrats on 100 pages of cavity inducing sweet customs.
I'm really digging this Mando. As I scrolled through the pix, I kept thinking "that sick mother f......"
Love that paintwork and how you applied each layer to all blend into pure deliciousness.
I love the staple range finder much better than the 'horn' looking one. Roberto is full of great ideas.
Beautiful work on the sculpting there, Dayto.... I mean, L.E..
I think you just gave me what my physician describes as 'custom lovers diabetes.'
Thanks. :(
-
r1bb1t, you absolutely slay me with your commentary!
That said, I have to be honest: I liked the sleek look of the helmet before you added in the fix-it sculpt. That's just me though. As for the staple range finder, it's perfect! No silly bends in the plastic, which really pops. I also love the color choices and techniques. It's a gorgeous looking bucket, to be sure.
-
Looking very nice, indeed. I agree with what many have already said: the use of the staple range finder looks much sturdier than the TOR-styled one. (I'm always a sucker for that "used future" look we grew up with watching the OT...)
Personally, I think that the sculpted sides add more of a flared Mando look to the helmet. The scuba helmet itself is a nice piece to begin with, but the slight touches you've added take this more to the Mando side of things. The use of the breather tube differentiates this from other Mandos I've seen and slides more toward the evolution of the Mando helemt. I see this almost as "Mandolorian" modifications to a clone helmet, so I expect---and like---the different look you're creating.
-
I really liked that Shea Visla's range finder on this helmet, it gave it an original yet cool tie in with the past. I think the helmet would have had to been grinded in a bit on the sides though to make it more narrow in order to really make it look right with that Shea range thingy. Basicly I think it would look good on the original helmet before you modified the sides, so in the end you have made the right decission switching to the more common Boba style range finder. But saying that I don't know what direction your going with the rest of the figure, can't wait to see this figures progress :) 100 pages amazing!!!
-
Looks great to me either way. This is an awesome custom Mando.
-
Hell yeah.....looks freaking sweeeeeeeet
-
Thanks so much for the kind words guys.
Wheeljack, I agree with everything you said. I also have another scuba clone I could open.
JediMerc and Darth Optimus, thanks guys. Both of your comments pretty much outline my thoughts of what I wanted this to look like. Very well put, an evo Mando look.
Barry, you my friend are a wordsmith. Thanks my friend.
Sorry for the lack of updates on this figure. I have 2 bodys I was working with but not sure I like either one. I am liking DO's idea of modified clone armor at this point. It seems it would be a good tie in with the helmet. Sadly, this has been put on hold for a few months. Some things have developed that require me to switch gears for the next 2 months. Expect some WIP pics of a Tatooine wave of figures in the next day or so. I have been doing a lot of research for this project as I want these to be 100% screen accurate, or as close as I can get. Many of these are just parts swaps then repaints as so many of the outfits were reused for other characters. Some I have a bit of sculpting to do so they will take a little longer. Also there are many small changes, such as one time the bandoleer is on the right and next shot it is on the left. So I will post reference shots I used to recreate these characters. Hope to snap some wip pics this evening, stay tuned!
-
I personally like the standard range finder...the other 'horn' looking one doesn't look like a range finder to me. The color scheme looks cool and cannot wait to see how the rest of this Mandalorian turns out. :)
-
HOLY MOLY! That helmet mod is so sweeeeeettttt! i like the standard rangefinder to cause the vizla one look's to far up on the helm and to big.
-
Thank Mando assassin and botw! I promise to get back on that figure after C6!
OK guys, get ready for non stop Jabba's Palace figure customs. A long time ago in a gala, hold on, years ago I started on a quest to identify and create a figure for everyone in the Palace/Skiffs/Sailbarge. No doubt a huge undertaking so I made the major players to go in my diorama for many months and ran out of steam when I had to pack it away. Below is a pic of the majority of them.
As you can see, all of them are made with older less articulated fodder. Some of these will be revisited and others will stay as is. I am also working on several at once so it goes a bit quicker. Ja'Quile has been a WIP for about a year, so I started with him. I replaced his lower legs with ROTS Wookie Warrior legs that were cut down tremendously. I then glued his original feet on the wookie legs. Added some sculpt to blend everything and repainted the entire figure. He is still undergoing paint layers being applied to get a believable fur look, almost done with him.
Next up is an unknown skiff guard on the second skiff. I have already changed the head as this one was to thin for his chubby body. I dremeled away a lot of the belly on "Ice Cream maker guy" and some on the lower legs. I have started sculpting and need to work on the legs next. I will post a reference pic when I post his completed pics.
This guy looks like a Mercinary and is seen near Boba Fett when Bosh is talking with Jabba about the price for Chewie.
This guy is a fan of Yarnal Gargan and he is "raising the roof" and clapping at the end of her dance. I need to resculpt his lower tunic to look like one long shirt with no belt.
AK Rev is a figure they gave us with these crazy legs for an inaccurate movie pose. He never stands like that in the film! I have replaced them with Hoth Han legs and they are a very close match so I am going with it to save some sculpting time.
Another Wequay, this guy first opens a window cover and tries to shoot Luke then comes out at the end and battles him on the deck before taking a lightsaber to the chest. I plan to do his hair with hemp thread.
Sgt. Doallyn is on the second skiff right up front and gets shoved to the ground by Chewbaca when Bosh and him enter the Palace Throne Room. This helmet is from my old custom, just a place holder as I want to sculpt an exact helmet and have it cast.
Here is one of my old customs along with his updated version. I am sculpting the hat for him along with changing the lower legs a bit. This guy is the Human gunner that replaces the Nikto gunner durring the battle on the deck of the barge.
Group shot of Wave 1, there will be 1 more figure in this wave but he was missing durring this photo shoot.

Awesome :o
-
Omg I need to watch ROTJ again, I gotta see some of these dudes in the movie now.
-
These are awesome! Any chance of recipes for these guys? A Jabba's Palace Dio is on my to do list. I could visualize most of these guys from your custom alone before I read which character they represented. I know Hasbro won't release all of them :-[ so I'll be going the route of the custom with some of them. I'm guessing you're aware of skiffguards.com for IDing these guys.
Looking forward to more.
-
Liked em on Facebook and Love them here! Nice work on all of these. Quite a bit of time has gone into them and it shows!
-
Fantastic job on these rouges...excellent detail one each of them!! Ja'Quile really turned out amazing! :)
-
LE, you have a way with creating some of the coolest Star Wars "ordinaries" I've seen. This latest bunch are just superb!
-
YES! This is my current goal with my customs is to create every palace goon, your Ja'Quile makes me jealous. What a fantastic idea to use that wookie for the legs, after you told me your plans I have been trying to get a hold of one. Awesome work, and I'm still down to make you a proper Jedi Luke in trade for one of your customs. Again I love this theme! ;D
-
Quite a bit of time has gone into them and it shows!
absolutely second that! Awesome work!
-
Great Job! So many figures out there for Hasbro to do but they wont. That's fine. It allows us to have this kind of fun.
-
Fantastic. I wasn't planning on doing any fp postings today, but this just had to get up there. Thanks for sharing this with us Spry. I didn't even know some of these characters existed!
-
Holy cow! What an amazing undertaking! Cannot wait to see how this works out.
-
Incredible work indeed.
-
Thanks for all the wonderful comments guys! I am glad everyone is into my project, I can tell you these are some of the most wanted figures ever, for me. I am really into all the background characters as most all of them were plotting to kill Jaba and take over his empire. I have been working really hard on this group trying to get every detail I can make out in photos into these figures.
I will start with Ak-Rev. I have painted his lower legs and some of his upper body that was slopy from the factory. Then I did a few washes to blend my new paint with there shiney factory paint. I dry brushed his head with tan and sealed everything in Dullcote.

Next up is Umpass-stay. He was missing in the WIP pics as I had only cut his legs in half. I found my old Bespin Vader with removable ball joints on the legs and added them at the knee to the Umpass-stay legs. AllI had to do was dremel a rounded hole into each side the drill another hole to accept the ball joint stem. I them repainted the hat, shoulder cowl, legs and feet. Sealed in Dullcote.

This is the unknown Nikto that is lurking behind Yarna when she dances. I have now sculpted his "shirt tail out" look.

This next one is very special to me. I have wanted this character forever! He is one of the most visable skiff guards in the scene! He is wearing white and is at the front of the second skiff and his name is Sgt. Doallyn. You may notice I have switched bodies for this from the previous WIP pics. The Scanning Crew suit is perfect I just has to sculpt his collar, brown pieces under it and add some length to the pants where they tuck into the boots. Then I painted everything and sealed with Dullcote. By the way I recycled my 10 year old head for this one.

That is all for today. I do have another almost done and the rest still need some sculpting. I hope to make more time for these this weekend.
-
Awesome work Spry. Thanks for the shopping list, I'll definitely be giving some of those a go. Did you sculpt that Doallyn head yourself?
-
In the military, you sir would be a sniper, because your eye for parts is DEAD ON! Combined with the delicate paintstrokes that would make Rembrandt weep.... Sorry, my eyes are watering up too much to see the letters on the keyboard.... These figures are just bwjeiripm...
-
Wow, just wow!!! :o
Awesome figures, you are truly gifted mate!!
-
I'm in awe of your version of Sgt. Doallyn! You've achieved perfection with this character, there's no other way to say it.
I love the shirt tail sculpting and what you achieved with the background Nikto behind Yarna; turned out very nicely indeed.
An excellent set of updates to these characters; I really enjoyed checking these out...I hope you've got more of Jabba's henchmen in the works in the future!
-
Thanks friends for the flattering comments. As I said earlier, I have wanted these figures for a long time. Before now the fodder available just didn't work for these guys. Now that we have all these amazing sculpts from Hasbro there is better fodder available to bring these to life. Also previously my sculpting skills were not good enough to even try to do this. I still think my sculpting is pretty crappy, but sometimes I can pull it off. I do a lot of refining and sanding that helps smooth out the added areas before painting.
Jedi Merc, thanks man! I have to admit, there was a huge sense of satisfaction when I finished Doallyn. He is my favorite of these so far. I have finished another that is not shown here that is running a close second to him, he wears a red head band, hint hint. Don't worry, I have several more in the works.
Barry, you sir, know how to make my day! You are too kind.
Rogue 82, I bashed the helmet together from Joe parts.
I'll have another update soon, 1 figure is done, 1 needs paint and several WIP's still to go.
By the way, I am despirately seeking skiff guards, the newest ones. I need the Nikto Guard( he drives the prisoner skiff) and Kithbath(SP?) If anyone sees these 2 figures I would gladly buy or trade for them. I need them before C6!
-
Spry, that paint job on Ak-Rev looks like magic. Love the Sgt. Doallyn too. Your update is on the front page.
-
Looking good in the Jabba Hood Spry!!!! You sir know your toys!!!!
-
HEY man i am in awe the ak-rev is a hundred times better . The sgt. doallyn is unbelievable i try not to duplicate anybody's idea but in this case i may just make an exception. lol keep up the amazing work. dude
-
I need those two figures aswell but if I see a spare I'll pick one up. Just wondering if you do any casting? That doallyn head is spot on and I'd love a cast.
-
great work LE as always awsome attention to detaiil !
-
Man, L.E. I'm loving the Jabba theme your doing. Jabba's Palace has always been my favorite part of the entire SW universe and I love seeing you bringing it to life in action figure form. I'm drooling over here.
-
Wow these are awesome sculpting work is awesome!!!!! :o
-
Thanks so much guys! I have never done any casting but now that I am sculpting, I want to try it. This head is close but not perfect. I will be sculpting an accurate version after C6, this is close enough for now. Anyone interested in making these guys please do so, you just have to post the pics so we all can see them.
I have a few more done and hope to make time this evening to snap a few pics!
-
looking forward to the new ones, your work here is really outstanding and so rich on details, wow!
-
Thanks Stefan!
OK I am back today with 3 more figures from ROTJ!
First up is the Human gunner on the Sail Barge that takes the Nikto's spot after he bites the dust.
Hat Sculpt
(http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x354/SprywalkerRanch/Star%20Wars%20Custom%20Figures/DSC_0002-15.jpg)
The Luke Bespin body is a bit short and this guy is tall so I am adding Death Star Gunner boots to these legs. I sliced off the front of the feet and will dremel and sand this area untill it looks like taller boots. Then drill a hole and insert articulated feet to add height.

and here he is...

I will have new shots of him on the Sail Barge at C6 in just over a month!
Here is the final WIP of the Weequay Gunner that pops out the window of the Sail Barge then battles Luke on the deck. You just can't keep a good Weequay down! I have changed out his lower tinik and the skirt for a longer more accurate version.

Congrats on being selected to the first ever Star Wars Celebration Customizing Panel!
Ditto!!!
Well done mate! :)

Thanks so much Shawn, Kreeper2 and botwt! I tell you I have been on cloud 9 this last month. Though it was killing me that Lucas Film said we could not talk about it yet. Anyhow, I am just glad that our community is getting some recognition. This should be a huge boost for our chosen art form in that department. I look forward to meeting all of you that are able to make it to C6! We have been told the customizing panel will be on Sunday, not sure on the time or room number yet. I will sure keep everyone posted on the info.
-
Awesome job man, those figures are dead on like those dudes in the images. :o
-
I officially declare this the Day of Sprywalker!
Spry, I think this is phenomenal and it looks like you have been sculpting for years. Talk about adding something awesome to your already great bag of tricks. Human Guard on the front page.
I am so happy for you and that customizing panel too. I can't wait to watch it.
-
Happy Sprywalker day!!! I cannot wait till C6! Still amazing me that this is going to happen. All three dudes rock! 0/

I officially declare this the Day of Sprywalker!
Happy Sprywalker Day indeed! My reply will be in the form of a flash forward, to the year 2058, and the setting will be my living room, sitting with my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
By this time, Luke Sprywalker Day has become a worldwide recognized official holiday, as many predicted. It has become such a phenomenon, it has absorbed all of the other holidays, and everything is celebrated on this one holy day. It is a day for gift giving and giving thanks, and celebrating our independence against bad customs. It is when a new year of Sprywalker begins, and at night, children of all ages dress up as their favorite Sprywalker custom.
As we sit around our beautifully lit Sprywalker tree, sharing gifts, I begin to answer the many questions from the family.
One grandchild asks, "Is it true you were at the first Sprywalker Day celebration?" I reply, "Yes, I certainly was. Many of us were there. It was truly a special day."
Another person asks, "Is it true that when he was still in the womb, that his ultrasound revealed that there were two babies, but it turned out that what was thought to be a second baby was actually his massively enormous manhoo....." I stopped this question with a quick "STOP RIGHT THERE! That is extremely inappropriate, and secondly, of course it's true. It's been well documented in several hundred medical journals."
Another person asks, "Is it true that you remember when he was still a mortal?" I replied, "No, I don't. He was an immortal back then too. It just wasn't revealed until 2017, but we all had our suspicions."
By now, the turkey with all of the trimmings was set at the table, so we sat and ate and gave thanks to Luke Sprywalker on this glorious day, for all of the awesome customs he has given us to view.
Congratulations, L.E.. I am very happy for you. You are an inspiration to us all, and are perfect for the customizing board with Sillof and Dayton. Being there with you three is alone worth the admission price.
-
HAHAHA! nice one Barry lol and congratulations LE you jammy beggar you!
-
WOW! Thanks Shawn! and thanks so much to all my friends who have commented. This place is so much fun!
Barry, you have once again made me laugh until...I wept. You are the best story teller I know! Thanks buddy.
-
LOL! You are welcome Spry. If I had known that Zippy was gonna immortalize this day like this I would have announced it years ago!
-

-
so much good stuff here my friend you are excellant at getting those obscure characters Created
-
Great job!
-
Spry-Guy your customs are always excellent.
-
Thanks again guys! Thanks for tuning in!
I have been doing some sculting the past few evenings. No refining has been done yet so the sculpt should look a bit better before I start painting.
Here is the Human Mercenary that is on the second skiff. All I have to do is scratch build his harness (like AT-ST drivers) and paint.

This one will become Yotts Oren, he is on the second skiff as well. I had to cut the bandolier straps awaw from the shoulder area, while leaving them attached.
Then removed Wolfs shoulder pad and glued it to Yotts shoulders. I glued the bandolier straps down and sculpted the rest to attach each end of the straps.
I have cut down and resculpted a Klatau hat to be film accurate.
The extremly hard to make out leg guard and I removed the holster and strap.

Hey man cant believe how fast your doing these figures . I am really enjoying the followups cant wait to see whats next

Thanks again for the comments guys. I have been sick over the weekend so I got nothing done other than taking photos of last weeks work. Today we have the character known as "Human Mercenary Pilot", he is seen on the second skiff and the funny thing is when he is knocked into the Sarlac it shows a caucasion blond headed guy in "Fozec" clothing.
Next I wanted to repaint Bubo and a Jawa. The sculpt on Hasbro's figure is great but the paint job looks nothing like the little guy. I used the reference shot below and a photo of the prop used in the film to get a better look for him.
I painted the figure burnt umber first.
Then applied more than 10 different colors with washes and dry brushing inbetween untill I got to this.
The photos don't do Bubo justice, you really have to see him in person to see all the layers and colors. There is a very bright orange used on the lower areas of his body that only show up on his tail in these pics.
The jawa received a black wash and then was dry brushed with tan.
I really like taking pics of these guys in the Palace. I also wanted some pics of them that would look similar to Dan Curto's pics when he reviewes figures. That thought inspired the next and upcoming pics of all my Jabbas Palace figures, new ond old.

-
Amazing ...Simply amazing You really captured bubo as well as all the others keep em coming all the best to you ....
-
Awesome job man, spot on with the guys in the movie.
-
Really liking your GOONS!! Looks like you've got the sculpting nailed.
-
Thanks guys, I have 2 more wips underway, may have more by the end of the day. I am really enjoying the sculpting. I used to avoid it and do anything to not sculpt.
and now, a group shot

I love all of them you have major skill! I like to sculpt now when i used to avoid it. ;D
-
WOW! stunning work . Looking at the blue skirted Weequay and Bubo against the blue makes your figures look like on set reference photo's. Very inspiring work... if a little daunting!
-
Dammit! These are so freaking awesome! Background filler for the win!
-
Impressive. Most impressive.
Spry I don't think there is a thing you can do when you set your mind to it. Back on the front page.
-
Totally rockin with the ROTJ awesomeness here!
-
Simply incredible. Great work.
-
That is some amazing work there mate...truly amazing!!! :)
-
Just amazing! Very impressive work!
-
DAMN BRO JUST AWSEOMENESS
-
absolutely brilliant!! a perfect HASBRO line :D
-
Thanks for the comments guys! I have been scarce here as I have a lot to do over the next 20 something days. I promise to catch up with everyone elses work soon! Meanwhile I have been hard at work on more Jabba's Palace customs.
Lets start with a simple improvement on a Hasbro figure. This will become Beedo, Greedo's brother. I am not bothered by super articulation on this one. All he needs to do is stand at the gambling machine or sit on the entry steps. He didn't stand that great so I gave him articulated feet. I also gave him an accurate jacket with the rolled collar like Leia's Hoth jacket.
Next I gave him several washes to bring out the sculpt followed by dry brushing over the yellowish panels on the side. I also repainted the eyes and sealed them with gloss sealer while the figure was sealed with Dullcote.
Comparison shot with VTC Greedo.

I'll be back soon with a few more. Thanks for looking!
-
The Greedo look's Amazing! Why did you go with non articulated arm's?
-
Nice updates! Very well done. Both figures look awesome.
-
Luke if I ever win the mega millions be prepared to quit your job and be my custom making machine. Nice job man
-
I hope you made these to fill up your Barbie Sail Barge
-
You can read my comments on the front page Spry. I mean every bit of it.

The Greedo look's Amazing! Why did you go with non articulated arm's?
Sorry i didn't read the description. :-[
I can't get over how cool the eyes are!
-
WOAH... hot lil' mama is HOT... old one? Not so much, lol.
-
Thanks so much for the kind words guys! Joe! Great to see you back in here! I have been grinding away on a few more of these guys, I am sure you would have never guessed. LOL First up is Rayc Ryjerd, He is paying off old debt as Jabba's cook. He can be seen at the BBQ in the Palae and on the sale Barge enjoying an adult beverage. I am working with Ugnaught legs and Farm Boy Luke torso, the peg and 1/4 inch of the waist has been removed to shorten the figure. I added a srew and will do the hot glue fill described earlier to make a tight fitting swivel joint.
Here he is with his Father Rycar Ryjerd who can be seen in the streets of Tatooine and the Cantina in ANH.
With Greedo to check the scale, he looks just right.

I guess these guys like blue...
I then started on the Human guard on the second skiff. I pieced together this body and started on his helmet with some soft goods rather than sculpting this time. It will get glued down, after I repaint the face, so it will look more normal.
Sculpting the gauntlets and sadly I didn't take another WIP photo after this one. I also sculpted the wrist gauntlets over the lower arms.

That is it for today, I have a fully articulated Barada and Yoxgit in the works and I need to make Nizuk Bec and the Jawa that fans Jabba. After those 4 I have to get to work on mods to my Palace and building a new BBQ and all the little things you see in the scene. I hope to be updating some diorama pics next weekend. Chao for now.
-
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The skiff guard is amazing! So is the chef! What paint did you use for skin tone on the guard?
-
Amazing Spry. Amazing. They will be on the front page soon.
-
Fantastic Spry! you gave me ideas on how i am going to do little people now
-
Selling your soul to the devil in exchange for some of the sweetest customizing skills on this side of the sun is totally worth it after seeing one masterpiece after another. Luke Sprywalker Day doesn't come often enough, unlike you and your stable of hotties who service your every need. Hope that innuendo wasn't too far.

LE I've just spent an awesome commute home going through this project from the start - AMAZING! Simply some of the best work that I've ever seen. I'd buy these guys in a heartbeat.
Keep them coming man - I can't wait to see more!!
-
Wow, more incredible pieces!! Your talent knows no limits! :)
-
Thanks guys! I am hoping no one gets burned out on seeing all the background characters and skiff guards.
So my good buddy Chad, aka Peakob1, asked when I would be making Yoxgit. I said, I already have one so I may not be making him this round. Well, when people ask me stuff like that I start looking at my old custom and saying, he doesn't fit in with current figures or my new paint style. So here we go...
I have dremeled away and sanded half of the Ugnaught torso.
Now bothe sides are done and I sculpted his pockets.
I have also dremeled away at his hair line to make that screen accurate.
Here he is ready for paint.

Heck no! I love seeing these guy's!!!!!!!!! That ugnaught look's like it jump out of starwars and landed into your hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep the epicness coming!!! ;)
-
These figures are so amazing. Love them all. You definitely brought one of my all-time favorite scenes to life. Can't wait to see the finished diorama filled with all these masterpieces. CVI has no idea what they're in store for. So wish I had the money to go. I should have started a kickstarter on the blog at the beginning of the year for fans that wanted us there. I would have loved to see this in person!
-
Awesome job man, they look just like the guys in the movie.
-
Looks awesome Spry. Back on the front page.
I am so excited for that customizing panel I am already having a rough time sleeping. I feel like a kid at Christmas.
-
HEY Man I got to say it again ...... OUTSTANDING !!!!! I really enjoy your work. I to was also planning a yoxgit for one of my next posts . I also agree CVI has no idea whats heading their way. I do hope somebody from Hasbro will be on hand to see the all the works of art and how they are screwing up again all the best!!!!!!
-
Yoxgit! Very nice, very nice ;D
-
That Barada is amazing.
-
LE this thread is the gift that keeps on giving!!
Fantastic work YET again! ;D
-
You guys are so kind to me with the comments, thanks. Tamer I am with you, it is quite hard for me to sleep these days. I have been getting by on about 5 hrs a night.
Thanks Brian! I too wish you and Elias could be there!
Pressing on to the next figure, a repaint and leg adjustment for Nysad. Notice his stance is no longer too wide.

Truly amazing work, buddy'

Thanks for all the kind words guys. C6 was a blast! Very tiring but so much fun, I can sleep now that it is over right?! The last day tear down was insane! Thank the maker I had Chad, Lucas, Wit, Nate and Jenn guarding my stuff. Kids and adults were going crazy trying to take anything they could when Frank said that is the give aways, it no one has claimed the hose they made you are free to take it. I guess they though that meant my Rancor and Jabbas Palace figures, even though we told everyone 10 times it was from my personal collection. Anyhow, in the frenzy someone on the diorama team gave away my heat gun. Then I realize my box of tools is missing, yea, I am now out around $250. My Dremel, my bits, drill bit set, Kobalt knife set with many different shaped blades, mini pliers set of 4, Craftsman Anvil cutter for wood/plastic/tin, my sculpting tools/dental set, 6 paint brushes, I am tired of listing things now. Thank the maker again that I didn't take my new Dewalt Cordless drill I got for Christmas, that people were asked to take if they could cause LF can't buy us drills and things like this. Sooo, while I build up some tools I have been doing some organizing and deciding what I had to display with my space available. Answer is I pretty much want to re do everything. I really want to approach everything thing with a prop makers mentality. I have compiled several resource images since C6 and been inspired by many different things. You will see more in my diorama area, back on topic for customs, this is a simple fix. The Gamorean guard has a super fuzzy diaper. I wet it down while flattening it with my hand, let it sit to dry and to me it looks a bit better. The one on the left got the treatment and the one on the right did not. Not great so I may try trimming it...

Now, this is what I would like for us to see coming out in vintage packaging next year. ROTJ Sets! With a ne larger skiff to hold them all boxed like the current Kmart AT-ST!

Dang, that totally sucks about your tools getting nabbed (ganked, or whatever the slang term is now)! I don't know how you feel, but from the way I read it; if that were me, I'd be talking to Frank about re-couping some of those tools or the costs, since he made the announcement.
I loved the panel discussion, thanks to Clonecrazy (I think) for posting those videos. I wish you guys would have talked a little more about photonovels, but understand that you were limited on time. As mentioned on FB, "nice accent"!! It's really cool getting to see the people behind the customs. Funny thing is, I learned a couple about pronunciation watching those videos. First of all, I've been pronouncing Sillof's name as "Sill - off" and apparently it's "Sigh - loff." Also, for years I've been pronouncing "Tonnika" (as in Tonnika Sisters) as "Tonic - ah," but apparently it's actually pronounced, "To - nee - ka." Not sure who came up with the pronunciation "To - nee - ka" (and that may be the "official" pronunciation), but it just doesn't fit the spelling to me.
By the way, you guys mentioned that you did not use "Wal-Mart" paints. Over the years, I've heard people praise Applebarrel paints, and that's the brand I've used. Not the most durable brand, but what brand of paint do you guys use?
Jason
-
WOW! He look's great! I am sorry to hear about the tool's!Dang people!! >:( Just kidding LOL! ;)
-
Awesome fix on the guard, also sorry to hear about the stolen tools man.
-
Spry I love this displaying your customs in the vintage packaging. I would love to see you get some stickers or something and totally replace those labels to describe what you have in them now. I bet we know some folks who could do this too. Back on the front page.
-
Hey tough break on the tools , anyway welcome back. That is an awesome idea you got there for the rotj 3 packs. I agree with tamer you should replace the names on the box to match the figures . Btw that cape on the luke is fantastic . If you don't mind me asking from what figure did you get it from ? All the best
-
Awesome!
-
Thanks everyone! I have to say, I really love the look of the Vintage packaging. Yea, these were meant to be quick mockups, if I were to keep thiem in there I would want the correct names. All of these figures are on my shelf display now. The cape I used for Luke is from the prince of persia, it has a great vintage figure look. Thanks for the concern for my ools. Thanks to my good friends here Shawn is sending me a heat gun and Chad is giving me his old dremel! I also spent $100 for now to replace some things you just have to have. Jason, thanks and the first thing I did was talk to Frank, he is dealing with his mother's bad state of heath and I know that is heavy on him, but yea, he knows. Also on the Tonika sisters, I pronounce them like you do. I have heard several people pronounce it like Dayton does. I wish we could have so much more with the panel. I wanted to mention/show work from the community as did Jamie but I think you could tell we went really quick, too quick, and rapid fire covered what time permitted. We would need 2 hrs to do this topic justice not 30 minutes the questions.
-
Wow first off great idea with the ROTJ three packs, when I saw them on the front page I thought they where actual products! I was excited to finally get my hands on some gamoreans. LOL! Moving on to the next subject of your missing tools....thats real shitty, I might have some extra sculpting tools that I would love to send you. Let me know if you can still use them, I have alot of dental tools that I use so thats what I can send. Just PM me.
-
(http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x354/SprywalkerRanch/My%20collection/DSC_0008.jpg)
Tee hee! looks like they're holding hands! Love the look of those 3 Packs, so when are they out? I'm gonna need 1 to open and 1 to display ;)
Sorry to hear about the tools though. I heard about someone else stealing the box of Jawa's from the figure fund as well. As Star Wars fans we like to think we're an honest bunch, but I guess the Dark Side still takes over some of us. Hope you can get back on track soon.
-
Awesome concept packaging idea there - and love the custom, of course... especially that Doalyyn... wow.

-
Sorry to hear about your tools I hate how ppl get when they hear FREE or GIVE AWAY they just seems to take more than they need
-
I'd buy those Vintage packs and stand outside the store for hours until it opens just so I could get them.
-
I just now read about your loss at C6. Very sorry to hear that. I can strongly relate to your pain. Such a shame that there are people out there like that who would steal things that were clearly not meant as 'giveaways.'
But, to be honest, I think these weren't the low down, dirty, corn licking, cork soaking, rat bastard thieves that you may think who would be the type to steal another man's belongings. I propose these were brilliant, albeit dishonest and of the lowliest of sorts, diabolical black marketeers. The people responsible for this crime probably have been planning this ever since the word spread the globe that you were making a public appearance, and with a possible chance you'd be bringing your tools.
Imagine their thoughts..... Like possessing Thor's mighty hammer, they now have the tools of a customizing god. These are the tools used by the legend, and have forged countless masterpieces.
On the black market, I estimate some of the items, once known to whom they belonged, with fetch enough money to purchase 6 blocks of property in downtown Tokyo. Your status as customizing god was established many moons ago, and with that responsibilty goes great power, and the need for a top notch security team to keep the crazies away.
Seriously sorry about your loss. If you get names, I'm always down for a late night visit and my 'sucka shanking' kit.... It's a kit that holds things for the sole purpose of shanking suckas.
-

Thanks again for your concern guys.
Barry, you always have the greatest outlook on things! HAHA! Thanks for the laugh over the situation.
Brian, I know right!?! We need to get these pics to Deryl DePriest...

SPRY IS KING OF CUSTOM OBSCURE STAR WARS BACKROUND CHARACTERS!!! ;D
Long time,no post from me,sorry 'bout that friends.I do try to keep up with most of my friends here through facebook,so I'm not completely out of the loop, but I know I'm missing out on some great custom figures here, and I do regret that.K,well, aside from that,I know how hard making these obscure guys can be.Digging through fodder bins, making trades, and the like to get just the right pieces to create these customs. It's not like creating an original custom,or a main character,so great job on these guys as always. The force is strong with you.Keep up the great work, and hope you had fun at CVI,wish I could have made it,but funds were tight this year.
-
Hey, great hearing from you! Yea, real life gets in the way it seems and keeps us from having fun sometimes. Just glad to see you checking in and thanks.
-
I will be sending these your way sometime this week. ;)
-
WOW! Thanks so much! I found one of my old sculpting tools I have not used in a while so these will be a great addition. You are so kind Sir.
-
OHHHHH! Those look nice! :P
-
OK, I am resurrecting this thread from page 4! Man I don't think I have ever gone that long without a post, sorry guys. I have been working away as usual. Mostly on my secret Santa gift, Christmas decorations, a vehicle or 2, and so on. So today I decided I would show how I started out my SS project. My recipient chose for me to make one of my GI Joe body Mandolorians. YAY, I love making those! Also I am a one up kind of guy with my work. That means my new custom seems like a failure if it isn't a bit above and beyond the last one. The last one I made was the Twilek Mando with custom helmet mash up. Now that one is going to be hard to beat so I wanted to start with another helmet mash-up and this is the result.
These next few helmets are others I did that day. I like them a lot and they will get bodies made up to go with them. So expect a few new Mando's in the near future. I am really in love with doing these helmet designs. The one with micro binoculars is a copy of someones I believe it may have been Psyclone. Just want to give credit and forgive me if it was someone else.
I also have been working on bodies for the other 2 helmets I did about 6 months ago. One was a Halo top x Jango faceplate and the other was a re-sculpted Scuba Clone. I hope to have them primed with new WIP pics soon as well.
-
Wow, that looks pretty daggone cool too.
-
Nice new buckets! The Mando helmet with the flip-down visor looks pretty cool as does the Cody-styled one. Looking forward to seeing these beauties painted up!
-
Sweet! ;D
-
Cool!
-
These are nifty! I added a set of macrobinoculars onto a Fordo alternate helmet a lil' while back. They are a cool addition to the buckets. That Airborne/Proto Boba is SICK! Nice mash-up!
-
I'm not sure who it was I seen combining macro's and buy'ce but its a cool look. I did a couple recently after seeing it done.......picked up a few Denal trooper helmets in a helmet bundle, liking the combos here.
And as for the Dio..........wow,I want one ;D
-
GREAT UPDATE SPRY ;D
-
Super cool helmets man, cant wait to see more. :o :o :o
-
Major update time! I have completed and mailed my secret santa gift. I got word that Elias has opened it so now I can let you in on what I was up to the last few weeks. I gave the teaser pic of the helmet mash up. It is the newest TFU trooper helmet cast from Clonehead x Jango Fett faceplate from SithHappens. Here is the only WIP pic of the figure and a couple of the stand.

That background is brilliant, the use of the IM stand and some of the household looking bits, just fantastic. You have a great grasp of using bits and fodder to build realistic and believable backgrounds. The figure is great looking, as well.
-
Damn, how cool is that! Elias must be happy!!! The figure is just fantastic, but that background is over the top amazing. Wow.

So awesome! And the background plate, so well done. Truly an inspiration.

This x1000!

This ROCKS!

The figure is awesome but the addition of the background take it above and beyond awesome
-
superb L.E. ! Elias must be one happy chappy!
-
I love the work you've done in articulating J'Quille's legs. Looks fantastic and much more imposing of a figure now.
The group shot of Jabba's goons was a wonderful way to start my weekend! great work in all the parts selections and paint work to get these guys up to snuff.
-
man thats a sweet looking mando.. nice job on the chest piece.. I really like that you did with the helmet as well...looks really slick..
-
excellent paint job and I also love that background piece, great work!!

This is a great piece of work, one hell of a job done there.........Elias,I'm jealous ;D
-
Awesome custom Mando, L.E. That one makes for one helluva X-Mas gift. Love your signature parts combinations and paint apps on him.
-
Awesome Mando! What a great gift.
-
What did you use for that awesome helmet mash up?
-
Thanks everyone! Shawn, it is the newest TFU trooper helmet cast from Clonehead x Jango Fett faceplate from SithHappens.
-
Thanks everyone! Shawn, it is the newest TFU trooper helmet cast from Clonehead x Jango Fett faceplate from SithHappens.
You ought to make another and have that one cast. Nice mash up.
-
I wanted to give things that were original creations and no one else will have an exact copy. So Elias would have to be the one that lets that helmet be cast. By the way 2 more Mandos almost done!
-
OMG Spry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have I happened to mention in while you are THE "Kevin Jones" of customizing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm literally yelling, "WHAT THE CRAP??!!" I don't know what runs through your mind to put together the parts you do to make dioramas, but you should start a training class!! I'm looking at the WIP pic of that background and just shaking my head because I recognize more than half of the parts used, and it's just brilliant!!!!!!! I won't reveal all of your secrets <*cough* light switch cover *cough*> but again it's just brilliant how you put all these pieces together!!
Jason
-
This custom base is outstanding, I'll definitely use that idea. Congrats for this masterpiece!
-
Dad, this is so cool! I love this figure and I'm sure Elias is enjoying it now. If only everyone could see it in person.
-
Jason, yes you have, and again I thank you. I have this problem with thinking the next project has to out do the previous one. Sometimes I am happy and sometimes I am not. I try to have a fresh perspective starting each project and try not to reuse the same parts in the same way. It also helps to be a hoarder of junk bit and broken toys for over 10 years. You will more than likely see me on TV if the show lasts about 4 more years. Unless you are going to totally scratch build out of styrene, your fodder supply determines how good of a look you can achieve. Good guess on the light switch cover but it is a divider from inside the old computer disk holders that I made storage bins out of and also the back bin on the Big Mother Trucker vehicle I did a few years back.
BlackThorne, feel free to try something like this. You just have to post pictures in your thread when you are done.
Jaxon, thanks!

I was able to take a few pictures of my latest 2 Mandos today. These are so much fun to make and the possibilities are endless. I like to start with a helmet mod then build the charater to suit that bucket.

WOW! These are some nice customs!
-
love them all ,but my absolute favorite is the droid you made with the prototype Fett head.
-
Gorgeous Mando!! Fantastic work as always!
-
Nice, on the front page.
I like hearing how you decide to build these guys.
-
These Mandos are great. Such a cool series of figures. Love the group photo!
-
wow!! thats a great looking helmet.. That small visor makes is so unique..
-
awesome mandos! I love the group shot as well, you can never have enough of those guys! Really great paint and kit bash work, the flow is very artistic and the colors are vibrant. great work!
-
Very awesome man :o :o :o
-
Mando awesomeness overload here! Wow!
-
Thanks a lot everyone!
Darksider80, thanks so much man. The flow of each figure is very important and some work better than others. My next one has been a major challenge, I am trying to create original looks but still combining classic elements to keep it SWey looking. Bounty hunters come in all shapes and sizes and I like a bit of diversity as you can see in the group photo. So expect a heavy weight with a never seen before helmet, this one is way outside the box, and a "Skinney" that uses the concept Fett x Airborn trooper bucket mash up. Shout out to Darth Daddy for the idea to use the skinney body with this helmet. Not sure if I will do WIP pics or just give you finished work...
-
Hey L.E. Thanks so much for the Mando. He's amazing. The stand is incredible. I feel really lucky. Can't wait until you see what Dad sent you. Hope you have a Happy Holiday.
-
Thanks so much Elias! I am glad you are enjoying your early Christmas present. I too can't wait to get the figure Brian made for me!
-
Well I would love to upload my final custom figure of 2012 but something is up with my photobucket account. Have not been able to log on for 3 days now! UGH!
-
I noticed mine was down too and they are wanting me to try the beta version which is also locking up. I was actually forced to download their desktop app and then use previous img code and swap out the image name to make it work.
Seems like it is working now for me though (using the old version). Might be too many bugs yet to totally switch over.
-
Yea, I don't want that new look any way! I hope I can share these pics in the next day or so. Still locking up because I didn't switch to the new version is what I found in the FAQ section.
-
It didn't make me swtich to it here at work this morning. It sure did yesterday though.
-
Spry, your mandos are excellent. I love the helmet mods! That group shot is just over the top.

Excellent figure!!! How about a parts list? I only recognize the head and legs.
-
OK, I will try to remember the parts.
Torso - I think it was a Duke figure from ROC. He was all tan and came with an alternate head with a mask/goggles.
Upper arms and legs - Jungle viper
One arm is from Artic Destro and the other was from the fodder bin. It has a chap mai arm hollowed out slipped over it.
Frome there I added cast pouches and greeblies along with a bit of sculpt on the chest.
-
Sweet update. How did you get those pouches and holsters?

Actually, now that you mention it, it's Dusty.
-
That is one SWEET collection of bounty hunters. Very very impressive work! 0/
-
super excellent works, hard to tell a fave. Really really awesome!!
Instantly in the final shot I like the tall guy in the middle most, in a battle pose he would make a great scifi "cover boy".
-
The color combos look very nice on this guy. I'm loving your new helmet mods; the side profile of this helmet looks great.
-
Thanks for the kind comments on the Bounty Hunters. I have one more that I can post today for you. I still can't log on to Photobucket, been a week now, so I am giving up on them. Just made a Flickr account so I can get back to business as usual. Today I give you an Ubese Bounty Hunter featuring a new helmet design. Man this one was a lot of fun to build.

very cool! like the combo helmet
-
I saw this on Facebook and liked it. I so agree photobucket is being a pain. I might have to switch to flickr myself. Update on the front page.
-
Very impressive and unusual custom, totally amazing. I really enjoy seeing customs like this.
-
Really like this one, very very nice paint work all the parts flow because of it. I also like the addition of the red "text" on the helmet scanner very cool looking. Kick-ass job make more.
-
AMAZING! Wonderful design and paint job!!
-
Thanks guys and and Yak, thanks for noticing that digital readout.
-
I'm a big fan of the Ubese. Certain alien species I find cooler than others, and the Ubese have always been high on my list of favorites. I was really stoked when I saw you made such a cool version of one. For some reason, there aren't many customs of these guys and rarely do they look as cool and unique as the one you just created. Love the way he looks! Awesome job, L.E.!
-
Thanks so much Brian!
So my son Jaxon really likes Commando Gregor. He sacrificed the CW Republic Commando he got for Christmas to start making one. He learned the joys of sanding the paint off a figure and scuffed up the rest to get it ready for paint. I cut the static hands, knees and feet of and threw away the un needed parts. I went on to give this figure full articulation like the big H should have gave us. Then I applied a grey primer to the entire figure in 2 layers. Next I stippled on some darker grey followed by white. I had mixed results and plan to try something else to make it look like digital cammo. You can follow along with these pics.

First I used the first release of Cad Banes elbows for the knee Joint and it worked but the plastic is a bit weak on this top heavy figure.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8216/8378161517_c5505a1140.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/87594157@N05/8378161517/)

So I selected some articulated knees and cut them down as needed to slip inside the RC lower legs.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8077/8378162163_37571f3abc.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/87594157@N05/8378162163/)

Removed the small ball joint and drilled out the RC lower leg.

that looks ace ! i love how you turned the joints into a "plug in" type of affiar .
I echo W9's joint comments. Daggone awesome Spry. Time to go get this on the fp.
-
LE i had always kept those Bane joints thinking i could use them for something like this but was afraid they may be too frail. You proved that correct. I think the camo is looking really good. I need to watch that ep, still havent watched it yet. Nice work though i bet Jaxon is psyched!
-
It was cool to finally see an RC in the CW series. Finally some real action again. Great choice of you to make a custom of him, LE.
But er.... are you telling me even the CW Boss figure suffers from a serious lack of articulation? What the poodoo?! I started a fully articulated Commando a long time ago, but never got around to finish him. It seems I might have to pick up that project again.
I mean, lack of articulation was a common disease back in 2008! Check out what Hawkeye did to fix that:
http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=2722
Of course, back then Microman figures were easier and cheaper to be found than nowadays, but you get the idea :)
-
LE: looking great! I am making Gregor in both outfits. Incom that is one sweet RC that guy had such a great tutorial.

So far I am loving the details, and articulation. I really can't wait to see this finished.
-
Nicely done, LE. What an improvement articulation wise. Now that was a learning experience.
-
I love your Gregor knee articulation fix. Awesome idea!
-
Thanks guys. I figured I may as well take a few pics as I went. It is not that hard to do just time consuming and I always drill a smaller pilot hole then step up to the size that should fit. Hope someone can use the info in the future.
Mr. Black, It is true. No wrist, knee or ankle articulation. Sad isn't it?
Chad, they are kinda weak but I have used them for elbow articulation with great success.
-
Man that looks great LE! nice mods to get better articulation
-
looking good man! Keep it up! It would be nice to see some video of your knee/wrist work just so we can get a good idea of what you did you get the new articulation.
-
That RC is great LE. I have the old comic book white RC, I might have to give him that leg treatment. Thanks for showing how you did everything.
-
That ACU camo is awesome looking! Well done
-
Thanks guys! I hope to get back on Gregor in the next week or so. A few parts I needed came in so I am in the middle of several commissions. Some parts I need can't be found or are too expensive so guess what? Time to start casting this stuff!

None of these are what I would call perfect but they are fine for me. It seems the larger the piece the better cast I can get. The engine pods look the best to me, though I need to touch up each one in 4-5 places. The Starkiller cowls have good number of super small air bubbles all over but as you can see when painted, POOF, they are gone. I like everything worn/weathered looking so it is perfect as it lends itself to looking that way. I am having trouble getting resin to fill the gun hand grip fully so I should have added a small strip of tape to that area on the next mold. This is a learning process and I hope to get better each time, this is actually my 3rd time casting parts. A huge thank you to my good friend Clint aka Clonehead! If it were not for your wip pics of parts you have cast I would have been lost here. Thanks so much for that, adding tape or styrene to areas you think will give you trouble is a must without a pressure pot. Now to get this room cleaned up! Man that sprue flies everywhere and our pup Chewie eats anything that hits the floor! Vaccuming for the 4th time in 2 days!
-
Lol, I track the stuff all over the house, LE. I even find it in the bed sometimes.
The parts look good, LE. I like those hoods and the starkiller scarf.
Man, how much resin do the engine pods take?
-
Wow, everything seems to have turned out great. Bet that feels good. Off to the front page.
-
great job spry welcome to the casting world
-
Any chance of getting some of those cast engine/equipment pods?
-
great job LE its great that as customizers we now have the ability to produce the parts we need our selves and not have to rely on Hasbro(thank christ!)
-
I'd like to see how you put those boxes together.
Jason
-
Amazing work! Any future plans to cast the entire starkiller figure?
-
HA HA I hear you Clint and thanks. The engines took around 1.5 fl. ounces each. Not the cheapest part to make but they are pretty cool.
Thanks Shawn and yes it does make you feel good to be able to create these things. I am really proud of the Starkiller cowl.
Thanks Mike but I don't plan to do this stuff all the time. Only when I have to for a commission or a figure for myself.
Dan I can't help you right away but may be able to in time. I really don't want to sell cast parts I feel it will kill my creativity let alone my time. Message me in about 2 weeks.
Thanks Jay and aint that the truth!
Jason, I have a plan but still may go with building it from scratch.
Dillon, anything is possible
-
Dillon, anything is possible
Awesome! I would get one of those for sure!
-
wow.. those are some very clean cast... nicely done..
-
I dont know if it kills it or helps to inspire it, LE. It certainly helps to erase some of the inhibitions knowing that if you ruin something that you can just replace it. It does certainly kill your free time, though.
-
Nice clean cast's. Well done.
If you decide to make some extra engine pod cast's, i would be interested in 4 of them.
They would fit in perfectlly with dio scenes.
-
Agreed Clint, as this casting run inspired a new custom on the spot. I guess what I was trying to say is, I don't want to spend all my time casting parts. I am only casting for my own projects and not trying to sell anything. I just want to create pieces I can't find/my original sculpts.
-
precisely, I believe you said once that you build your custom around the helmet or the head sometimes. Most times, I build around the part or parts. If I have got a new one and it excites me, I just gotta use it for something.
-
Great job on the parts LE.
I agree it does take a lot of time, more time than I have. You know I was casting quite a bit for a while but it began to invade family time and I had to stop. I really want to kick-start it again but it's hard. Once you drag all the crap out to get started you can't just stop in the middle and pick up the next day. You're in it.
-
Clint, I agree with you 100% and am now addicted to casting stuff. DS, so true, so true.
So today I am breathing some life into this thread with something completely different. I was asked to contribute to a diorama being made for Joe Con. My good friend Ratfink is heading up the efforts to display a few vehicles and figures in a diorama made by several customizers. Richards idea was to create the Joe's in Steampunk style, well the vehicles and dio as well. I have created 2 characters so far. I started with Wild Bill, as I was building him all I could think about was Tankster's amazing steampunk Snake Eyes from a while back, well over a year ago. As I was working on Bill I asked Daniel if he would mind me making my own SE based on his version but I would mix things up a bit as not to be a direct copy. He is one of the greatest guys ever so he encourages me to have a go at it and tells me a few of the key parts he selected. I am going to start with this figure as I love the thing so much. Presenting Snake Eyes with Steampunk aesthetic, inspired by Daniel Barnes.

Holy Crap, LE! I mean Holy Crap, LE!
He is beautiful in a manly way, of course. The parts, the mix, and oh, the incredible paint. Tell me about the shiny stuff. Paint, metal, clear over silver, foil, you are sending parts to be chromed, what is it?
oh, and you still didnt give me info about the kc joe con.
-
I really am enjoying your steampunk phase. On the front page.
That ought to be one killer con dio too.
-
I don't know much about GI Joe stuff, but I do know awesome when I see it! Looking at that makes me want to start collecting GI Joe...lol
-
wooooow great works look fantastic wonderful figures DH DH
-
Kick-ass job on SE, love the ninja stars on the back of the knees. Great paint work and does remind me a bit of the Nazi guy in Hellboy, really liked that design BTW. Can't wait to see what else you have cooking.
-
LE these two figures are just amazing i cant wait to see them combined all with the others at Joecon!
-
That is outstanding !!! a beautiful custom awesome job!!!
-
I love the details on this one, Spry! The gold-on-black looks fantastic. Nice choice on the knee armor you used; I like the throwing stars/gears on the back of the knees.
The added height creates some 'bulk' that I think suits the version of SE pretty well.
-
That steampunk Snake Eyes is just too cool, L.E.! This reminds me of a story....
Years ago, my refrigerator died. The compressor stopped working, and it was just hot inside. I had a radical idea that I wanted to try. I went to one of your custom threads and printed some of your pictures. 3 to be exact. I placed 2 pix in the freezer, and one in the regular side, and closed the doors. Within minutes, the food and ice in the freezer began to freeze, and I knew I was on to something. I wondered if I could also apply this method to cool my home during the summer months, and perhaps my vehicles.
Needless to say, you have saved me thousands of dollars over the years in energy savings alone.
Again, very cool work, bro.
-
It was a lot of fun watching these Steam Punk figures come together. Keep those WIP pics coming to my phone. I love watching your builds take shape. Snake Eyes looks magnificent. Can't wait to see the reactions here at ISY when you unleash the other projects you have coming. Prepare to be blown away everybody.
-
Thanks so much for the comments everyone! This project has been like a refresher for me. It has been so good stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something different. I have always loved the steampunk aesthetic but stayed away from trying anything with that look. There have been so many great customs by Sillof, Ratfink, Tankster, Packrat Studios and a few others. These guys really think out their designs. I love talking to Ratfink about customizing. The dude is so passionate about everything he does, everything is well planed and has a purpose. There are also a lot of steampunk customs that I don't like, as they pointlessly kitbash gears and cogs all over the place that don't really work anything. So I am trying to stay away from that. My figures are designed with heavy Victorian influence over the steam influenced re imagining of technology. That will come at some point with other characters. I also think that is something the Cobra side would more eccentric with. When doing research you find simple designs and really eccentric, I am trying to walk the line between the two.
Clint, thanks man! I try to use different types of sealers with my figures. I spray Dull Cote on the figure and parts, all metal gets Model Masters brush on gloss sealer. Sometimes I use Model Masters brush on dull sealer.
Thanks Shawn! I tell you, I can not wait to see some pics of this diorama. I wish I could be there!
Bubba Fett, that is a great compliment! I love the Joes and actually prefer their bodies/articulation to SW figures.
Thanks so much Mandalore!
Brent, glad you like him! In all honesty, the idea for the throwing stars was born from needing to cover up the face mask you could see. The part for the knee guard is the $Joe Shipwreck's diving mask. As I said, the main body design is the same as Tankster's version. I used different arms and legs and gave him a more ornate design trying to get closer to the eccentric line I am walking with these. I do agree it may be influenced by Kronen from Hellboy, good eye.
Daniel, so glad you approve! I too can't wait to see some pics from the con!
Why thanks you Mr. Jedi!
Jedi Merc, thanks buddy! You may have read that knee armor is a diving mask! The stars cover up the face plate. I agree and love the added height, good eye.
Barry, I love you man! Your replies are more thought out than my process for this figure. You really make my day when I see a comment for you. The wife is now used to me yelling, I yea, Barry has commented, you want to read this one!?! The whole fam loves the Hoth video with your commentary!
Brian, glad you enjoyed it my friend! I will be keeping you posted, and I am ready for another update now.

So awesome! I am loving Wild Bill.
-
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish you could actually hear this.
-
That is so awesome Spry. On the front page.
I can't wait to see what characters you try next. Or perhaps do this with a few iconic SW Characters?
-
You are a wildman, Spry. I love his gear and, of course, his overall look.
-
That looks DOPE! Although, there's something about the hat that distracts me... maybe something less....50 gallony...maybe 10 gallons?
-
After seeing this Steampunk Wild Bill (as well as being a fan of your work for years), I know that there isn't anything you can't do.
Brain surgery? Not a problem for L.E.!
Pilot a fighter jet? L.E. can do that in his sleep!
Move a mountain? L.E. can do that before breakfast!
Travel at the speed of light? All too easy for L.E.!
Time travel? L.E. has probably already been there, done that!
Ride a bull for more than 8 seconds? Piece of cake for L.E.!
Fix the national economy? Not even a challenge for L.E.!
Sprywalker Ranch puts out more cool things than an industrial ice factory. Another masterpiece!
-
That is WILD! Great work.
-
Well thanks again guys! Shawn, there are more coming. I have one completed but I need 2 of this same figure, there is a hint for ya. Then I have 3 more pated out, you know I am dying to work on a female or two. I could see myself trying a few select SW characters in the future, they are so much fun!
DaBomba, I know where you are coming from. I wasn't sold on it at first but this is where I am bringing out the eccentric flair that surrounds this aesthetic. I also don't want it to look to "Western" but have a taste of it. I grew to like it after sculpting the bits on the hat and just went with it. I really appreciate your honest reply my friend.
-
Wow another awesome figure in the steampunk universe!!! I actually like the hat you have done on bill ... it works . As far as what you got planned i am assuming you have a cobra commander figure in there ( i hope) lol but i would like to see what you would do with destro as well as a B.A.T. again excellent job.
-
Thanks Mr Jedi! For now I am sticking to Joe Characters. Ratfink did such a great job on the Cobra side I have not really thought about doing them, but only time can tell.
Today I have the GI Joe Troopers to share. I wanted to re imagine the good ol' green shirts in the Steampunk aesthetic.

DUDE! These steampunk figs are OUTSTANDING!
-
Perfect additions to the theme, Spry!
-
Love the way you wrapped this project up. They came out great!
-
My comments are on the front page.
-
Thanks guys! Hey Shawn, I have been thinking about your previous comment of giving this treatment to a few SW characters. May have a go at it but staying away from main characters. Thinking about a series of Rebels...
-
Sounds interesting to me.
-
Outstanding update !!! would love to see a series of rebels !! keep em coming
-
These are beautiful. I love the copper paint look. Very clean. Most Impressive
-
Outstanding! You really have some skills with the brush, my man. The jet packs are just awesome. They bring that old school G.I. Joe flavor.
-
Awesome job LE!
-
I'm loving your steampunk theme, and I would definitely love to see the Rebels you mentioned. I, personally, like the hat on Bill. Kinda reminds me of Cad Bane's hat, with the larger brim.
-
Love the Steampunk Joes. Just awesome!
-
Thanks again for all the comments guys!
Since the Joe's I have been working on a commissioned Jedi, pics soon, and a figure for the Smuggler's Gambit contest hosted by Customs for the Kid and RebelForce Radio. I picked Sweeper, a bounty hunter looking to capture Han Solo. I was drawn to the character as he is an Alien that has never been made before and all I had was a character description to go on. This is my Vision of Sweeper.

I had to quote my post to get the pictures with this description Barry. I started witha CW Plo Koon head, cut down and sculpted the face over it. Then I used a Woof torso and sculpted the fur on the shoulders. I also sculpted the fur and metal plates over Ki Adi Mundi arms. The shoulder plate is from Gen. Grevious and the bandolier was built from the flat string I use and bits I cast myself. Then I used Jedi luke upper legs with "Ghost Face" from the cantina lower legs. I cut 2 different pieces of fabric for the soft goods skirts. Then added the Zuccas belt part and built up some gear to it. Gun holster and front knife from the fodder bin and I made the side knife holsters by hollowing out a pouch cast I got from Sith Happens. I glued some pleather to the back and whala, a knife sheath. The helmet was made by cutting down a Frost Giant helmet and adding the cloth soft goods with glue. I ripped them up just before glueing them in place. Once dry the soft goods were weathered with pastels. His weapon is made from a cantina band instrument and thr projectile from the old R5-d4. I added some greblies and a paper clip to make it resemble a vibro axe. I think that is it, well, I repainted everything after a base coat of flat black.

First off, thanks so much for the in depth details on what it took to bring this figure to life. I really appreciate the extra time you took with describing your process. I always enjoy reading the creative steps that one goes through to make their art.
As you know, I've followed your work roughly for nearly 5 years, and I must say (and this is difficult being familiar with your extensive catalog of great piece after great piece) that this is probably my favorite figure by you. He is just beautiful. Great proportions and symmetry, regarding the sculpting and parts selection. I realize you do this all of the time, and I have come to expect great things from you, so this isn't a surprise to me that you've wowed me once again.... I just find something special about this one. I originally just stared at it for a while, awestruck by its beauty, so I had to know more.
He just looks so bad ass and somewhat barbaric. His weapons are mostly for close contact fighting, which suggests he doesn't even wince at getting his hands dirty. He looks like he's had his fair share of damage as well, based on his facial scar. I love the helmet and all of the soft goods (for some reason I always smile at the sound of "soft goods"). The sculpting is gorgeous. I would have never guessed most of the parts you used.
I love the placement of everything. He's loaded with extras, but not over loaded. I could easily imagine this version you've created to be being fleshed out on screen, without any modifications of your vision of this character.
Bravo, L.E.. Outstanding work, sir.
-
Spry that is gorgeous. Well not gorgeous in a pretty way, but all the details on this are. I love that weapon and head sculpt. On the front page.
-
This guy is just fantastic! After Bill his is probably my favorite too. Just still Luven that Bill. The face sculpt is top notch LE. You should be real proud of that.
-
I like him too Chad, don't think he is gonna knock the Mandos off their pinnacle though. His Norris Tretch is still my favorite.
-
Thanks for all the kind words guys! I will have to admit, Sweeper is one of my all time favorites as well. He represents everything I have learned over the years. Beginning with sculpting, then the soft goods, kit bashing, many of the greeblies are my own resin cast parts and the custom built weapon. Tons of fun, I had a great time with this one! Thanks for the fp Shawn!
-
You achieved some serious realism with this guy. Looks like he's ready to start walking around.
-
Geez this guy is off the charts !!! Very realistic !! Love the choice parts /soft goods you used on this figure ! Excellent job
-
Love the weapon, thougt it looked to small to be Pote Snitkins weapon with the Cantina band intrument. For got all about the R5-D$ projectile, it is a bit smaller.
Great figure!!!!!!
TIEpilot

LE this last custom is a true work of art. All your skills are on display with this figure. He looks like some kind of scavenger thug that you might find on Tatooine. Anyway, back to the figure, I absolutely love his weapon! I just have one question....
do you have any ride in mind for him? Like a vehicle or an animal.... or even a pet....
-
Excellent entry!
-
This figure is just unreal! Great outcome on the choice of parts and your paint apps, as usual, are stellar.
The figure's headsculpt is really cool. Reminds me of Tarok from that Ewok movie that came out on TV after ROTJ back in the mid-80's.
-
Nice work. You did a lot to this figure and it shows. Good luck in the contest.
Merc, I think they are the same species from the Ewok movie.
-
Willoughbian, thank you, that is a honor. I really poured everything I had into this guy.
MrJedi1977, I played round with 2 different torsos for a while. I ended up with Woof's but didn't want it to be so easily recognized. That is when I came up with the idea for the sculpted fur and pieces of armor.
Tiepilot, thanks! Making an original accessary for my figures is something I enjoy rapping things up with.
Tom, you are too kind my friend. To answer your question, I really love this guy and could see me creating something like that for him.
Thanks so much Mungo!
JediMerc, Thank you buddy. Yes he is the same species as Tarok. I also looked at reference shot of him and a few others while sculpting the head. Also the helmet is inspired by Tarok, so good eye.
Charles, thanks so much! I did put in some work on this guy and really took my time with the details.
-
Hey L.E., did you use FixIt to do all of the sculpting?
-
That's a wicket looking figure. He reminds me a little bit like the grinch but with more character.. How did you come up with that idea?
-
Charles, yes, Fix-it is the only thing I use for sculpting.
drod26, thanks, I can see that similarity now that you mention it. HA HA! Go to customsforthekid.blogspot.com for all the character info and the radio drama that inspired the figure.
-
I decided I wanted to make the character Sam Witwer voices in Smuggler's Gambit radio drama. I am a huge fan of Sam's since the release of the Force Unleashed. I wanted the figure to feature sleek tight lines, not bulked up like many of my other figures. I also wanted to go a little bold with color choices for his clothing. It is mentioned that he wears mostly black so I wanted to stick to the description but add interest. When modifying the GI Joe head sculpt I added a small scar to show he had been around the block. Since Sam also plays Starkiller I threw in a few homages to those designs. I wanted him to have several belts, the collar is reminiscent of his Raxus Prime gear cowl, the shoulder armor is a reflection of his training gear design. In the end other than some resemblance to Sam in the face, I hope it doesn't look like Starkiller but mildly influenced by his many looks. So on with the show, presenting Ro Kurota, a young spacer just turned bounty hunter with his sights set on Han Solo.

thats bad ace Sprywalker!!! in my opinion you are representing the character how I pictured him... I like it..
-
Thanks so much my friend!
-
I like that, good selection of colour and as usual......great sculpting and paint apps, gotta raise my game again lol
-
Nice job!
-
Man painting skills get better and better every figure. This figure is just flawless.
-
I'm loving the Starkiller influence on this guy. All of the detailing really shines through. Excellent work, L.E.!
-
LE just when I think that your work can't get any better! Beautiful paint and build my old chum, bravo!!!!

Thanks friends! I was lucky enough to be chosen as the winner for Ro Kurota. I almost didn't make him as a few others in the contest mad him. When they extended the contest a month I had plenty of time to knock him out. It is just funny that I put so much more work into Scraper and he would be my favorite figure but the one I did less work on won. You just never know what will happen!
I have finally set aside some time to make a figure for Tankster's Desolation verse. I really love his ideas and thought process for this verse. If you have not checked out his photo albums and writ ups on face book, you are missing out, big time. There are no boundaries to be confined by! He gives you the basic history and invites you participate in his world by making figures for it! So cool! I have decided to make a mutant Rhino that has always relied on brute strength but now has the ability to use weaponry. He started out with primitive or mid evil style weapons but has now added a blaster riffle to his side. He is the dominant male in his clan and they have sided with the Vermillians.

Wow, Spry I love all your work, but I think you may have just snagged my number one custom of all time slot. Maybe. Daggone, I have got to get this one to the front page. That weaponry alone is just outstanding. Wow.

Such a magnificent piece and great creature to have in Desolation

Paint apps are just superb....... Great work again spry

That guy just pops off the screen, LE! Fantastic, one of your best and that is saying something.
The skull on the shield reminds me of the old Sinistar Stand up Video Game.

Thanks for the comments guys! I am glad everyone is enjoying the Rhino. He was lots of fun to make and got me thinking outside the box. I really love this verse Tankster has created so I plan to make a few more oddities like this.

Another effort to add playability to the line involves playsets and storage crates that double as small rooms. Each one comes with it's own light you can mount on the ceiling. Also the flat bed with crane from the 6 wheel ATV can be mounted on the front of the crate.
Crate with lid and no windows.

The crates can be purchased with a variety of environments to display and when you are done playing simply pack everything back in the crate for quick clean up.

WOW! Great job on all those awesome adventure team figures, vehicles, and gear !

Spry, WOW buddy damn damn impressive work everyone of them are just amazing.

:o :o great work, I'm really impressed. Very nice "sandbox" pictures :)
-
Uh, wow! I will try to leave some more coherent comments when my whits return. L.E. you are making everything we wish we could get for AFs as consumers. Awesome work. Off to share.
-
Mr. Sprywalker you have hands down won the internet for the rest of the year my friend I cannot express how awsome each individual piece all the way down to each accessory just blows me away
the attention to crisp detail and such perfect parts usage and paint apps alone is astonishing then you go one step further by making the crates and dioramas to showcase these glorious sets
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Great job spry, such elaborate set ups and attention to detail. I really liked the crate/barracks.
-
Awesome pieces of art. True Masterpieces.
-
OMG LE! this should be the definition of over the top or going all out. I so wish I could buy all of this stuff especially that sub so cool!
-
Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I really poured my heart and soul into this line and am so glad it has been well received. Funny thing is I had a few more items that went with the line that I didn't even photograph. Each of them were pulled from existing toy lines and not customized at all, so I dropped them. Now you can see why I have been abscent here for the last 2 months. Working on all of this plus my end of the season work schedule and family duties have left me with no time to hang out here with all my friends. The good news is I should now have more time here to comment on all the great work everyone is producing, I have a lot of catching up to do.
Daniel, thanks so much buddy, you have made my day!
-
Fantastic work L.E.! Masterful stuff!
I'm flabbergasted, I'm almost glad I didn't have time to enter this contest... I wouldn't have wanted to go up against you and Ron this time.
WOW!
-
Well thanks buddy but I would have loved to see you make some of the figures from your rei-magined prequel series.
-
Simply amaziing! As always. We're so not worthy
-
Great stuff!
-
Well thanks buddy but I would have loved to see you make some of the figures from your rei-magined prequel series.
The re-imagined PREQUELS would have been cool, but I was leaning towards other things. My short list was "The Six Million Dollar Man", "Bonanza" or "Battlestar Galactica TOS".
-
I can't believe how much work you put into this line! Talk about a labor of love...just incredible. So much attention to detail. So well put together. It was a lot of fun watching your build on this project and getting to see the vehicles in early development when I visited Sprywalker Ranch. You really outdid yourself on this prjoject. The accessories are just amazing. It must have taken forever to assemble them all together. Super impressed!!! Love, love, love, the Egyptian motif.
-
WOW! what an amazing showcase of creative toymaking! Your storage box playsets take the idea to its apex, very simple and very well executed. I love the way you mounted one as a tower, the scuba set is amazing! too! All of the accessory packs are my idea of a great toy. The idea of tough modula playsets that double as toyboxes are a no brainer and I bet one of the major toymakers is going to pick up on it sooner or later. Hopefully Mr Spry will dominate the market first. (BTW if you do I want in!).
How's about a Deep Sea modula Aqua Base, an Arctic Explorer Base or even an Avatar type Planetary Explorer Mission Centre! the possibilities are endless.
Your great creations are becoming very polished indeed.

Thanks so much Brian and Julian! Jules, as you can see I borrowed your idea and tried to give it my own twist. I warned you that it was going to happen!lol
Now I wanted to share some promotional images we put together to show our product in a real play environment. This represents just one of many ways collectors and kids alike could enjoy our products.

Well look at that a six inch custom Black Series figure in Spry's house customized up! Needless to say it looks fantastic. They all do. Off to share.
Happy New Year Spry.

Awesome repaints Spry and especially on the 6" Greedo well done mate.

-
Awesome work once again spry!!! i really like the bo shek figure and would have never of thought to try using a soft goods for the harness an excellent touch !! I may just have to redo my upgrade again lol!!!!
-
Definitely want one of those Gonk droids in my collection. The Bo Shek is just awesome. What parts did you use? I thought I was happy with my Hasbro release until I saw yours. I've been doing really well resisting the urge to collect the 6" line except when I see the Greedo. Always hard to resist that one. Good thing you weren't the one in charge of applying the paint apps or I'd already have a Greedo sitting on my shelf.
-
Greedo is a great figure! My only complaint is the large OVAL eyes, they should be circular. The figure is amazing other than that and I just didn't want to resculpt those eyes. Thanks guys!
-
Hello friends, I have been out of work with all of this artic weather. So I have been working on a few figures and a new environment for a few of the 6 inch figures. I didn't intend on picking these guys up but after seeing the Sandtrooper then Greedo over and over again, plus there is nothing else at retail to buy, I caved. I don't plan to collect the entire line but I will cherry pick the ones I really like. They are great display pieces and look great on any shelf. So next up is the Sandtrooper. Great figure but just a few details need to be adjusted on this guy. I started by lowering his backpack, it sits way too high on the figure. Then I thinned down the strap that holds the ammo pouch and followed up by repainting everything. Notice that a Sandtrooper has grey tears on his helmet not lt. blue.

So now I am looking for 4 more of these figures so if anyone has them to trade let me know.
In my opinion each of these 6 inch figures needs a small environment to be displayed in. I am starting with a Cantina booth for Han and Greedo, yep, just picked up Han and he is fantastic! I have been doing mock ups out of cardboard to get the proportions correct then moving on to all wood construction. Why wood? Because this is designed as a large shadow box that can hang on the wall. I am out of shelf space so this was my only option. Figuring out the chairs was done by trial and error and took 3 adjustments to get to what I feel is just right. I cut out 3 pieces of wood and glued them together as a base to work from. Then I sculpted the details with Aves Fix-It sculpt.

Now I just have to make a mold for the chair and it will be ready for casting. Today I plan to start on the table, that is going to be interesting...
-
I love it all. Great looking white pauldroned Sandtrooper.
Those chairs are just works of magic. Man, you ought to make more of those and make tons of money. They look just perfect.
I really like the idea of a shadow box dio for this too. I can't wait to see how that all turns out. I like seeing this custom work in wood as I have been known to dabble a bit in that myself. Making those chairs out of wood and then using aves to put the detail in the middle of em was just smart.
Off to share.
-
The 6" dio seats look great! Perfect shape, nice, straight, clean lines on the seat cushion. The alcove you are putting together is off to a great start too...looking forward to seeing this come together.
-
Those chairs are fantastic, LE!
Where did you get your aves fixit? Did you order it direct?
-
I would love to know where you got your table too? That looks great and seems to have a working light?
-
Spry just stunning work on the Sandy buddy and I'm really looking forward to seeing the cantina section when it's done.
Ron
-
Thanks Shawn! I do plan to mold and cast more chairs and if it goes good I could make some available this time of year. The table I made out of a 2 inch PVC coupler a while ago. I plan to make a new one just a bit taller and more accurate.
JediMerc, thanks my friend. I want to make the new table next.
Glad you are liking the new furniture Clint! Yes, I order the Aves direct.
Thanks Ron! The woodwork goes a bit slower as I have to go to my Dad's to cut everything out.
-
I like the way the repainted figures turned out. That cantina dio also looks great.
-
LE I love the sculpt work on those chairs. The dio needs to somehow make it to the next Celebration!
-
Those chairs are sick. I wasn't going to pick up Greedo, but now I might have to.
-
:o :o
WOW.....FANTASTIC
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I am sort of on hold until I can get mold material to mold the chair. I spent some time making figures for the NPKB contest and I have been filling a few cast parts orders so I hope to start on the table soon.
-
I know I am waiting to see how your dio is going. Just a great idea doing it in shadowbox form. Your chairs are the best versions of these I have seen in the six inch scale.
-
Well I'm the same mate I can't wait to see you start thisproject back up.
Ron
-
Now you just need to make a "fried" greedo custom version to slump over in the booth to display him!
I've been silently lurking watching this thread/project. I'm impressed. I love the dio. now that i've gotten to really look at a few of the 6" figures in hand this kind of project is what I think they were meant for! I really wish they weren't so expensive!
This scale allows you to put a lot more detail into your builds, or at least, put it into the build easier! I look forward to seeing this finished!
-
All I can say is awesome, words don't describe how amazing those details are.
-
Good news guys! My casting materials showed up so I was able to mold and cast the Cantina chair! I am going to post all future work on that note in the diorama section soon.
More good news, I have been invited to display my work with another 1:1 scale prop builder in a local art show! I went to meet the people and see the space and lets just say it is rather small. I have plenty of room to hang vehicles from the ceiling but limited shelf and table space for display. So I need some small type of display/diorama to make this work. I knew I wanted to display my 6 inch Sandtrooper so I started thinking, I need a Ron Hemble style environment to properly show him off. So I started building one, look for an update in my dio thread, and I need a second figure to make the scene look alive/tell a story. I didn't just want another Sandie so I started thinking what could I scratch build to be really cool and different? As I was cleaning up the lab from building the dio I came across some containers I have used several times before and it hit me, A GONK DROID! Then the madness started, I will let the pictures tell the tale.

My final photos of him looked like crap so I will photograph him again and be back with completed pics. Thanks for tuning in!
-
The Gonk looks great! Does he stand pretty well? Looks like he might have the tendency to be top heavy.
-
Just sensational work on the Gonk Spry. And congrats on getting a spot in the art show and no matter what size the space is mate your work will blow them away.
Ron

Man that is one fantastic gonk droid . You truly are showing the potential the 6 inch line can have !!! I myself am not ready to invest in another line but i would buy that in a heartbeat !! Great use of parts very inspiring . I too want to know how well it stands on its own .
-
Spry, just outstanding my friend. I am in awe. See more comments on the front page. I am so loving the fact that you got into the six inch line hook line and sinker. You are really showing the custom potential here. Thank you for doing that and sharing this too!
-
Awesome work on that Gonk droid, LE. Hasbro has their work cut out for their own version ;D
-
I can't wait to see the final pics of this one. I have heard folks on Facebok say they want to do this in one to one scale after seeing this.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys! Sorry I have not had time to photograph the Gonk again, hope to do it in the next day or 2.
-
great LE ! is it me or do i spot some Warhammer decs?
-
You do indeed Jay!

I still have not made time to shoot final photos of that Gonk. Lots of things brewing at Sprywalker Ranch. For instance, I was invited to display my work at a local Art Walk. Downtown businesses in my area have different art themes on display the first Friday of every month along with wine tasting. The theme this month is Art From a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Josh Frink is the other artist in the shop with me and he builds 1:1 scale props and costumes along with his Daughter Autmn. You will see his amazing ROTJ Boba Fett kit , Han in Carbonite and Autmn as Leia Boush. An artist that goes by Shilli, who was not there for the showing, made all the Ewok like stuffed animals. My son is in here as Starkiller Raxus Prime and all the figures, vehicles and dioramas are mine. On with the pics.

I was not sure where I should post this, Shawn if you want to move it or tell me the best place for this I can move it. I figured it would get some traffic here.
-
That lifesize carbonite block is amazing. Please tell me that's like a façade for your fridge door or something!
-
Wow, I would have loved to go to that. Time to take this to the front page.
Spry I say we leave this here for a bit and then move it to the conventions and events section as that is perhaps the theme of this and deserves its own section in my opinion. Man, I wish I lived a bit closer, I would love to have seen this.
-
Thanks guys! and that carbonite block is not mine. It was made by Josh Frink and it stands in his office.
-
Spry, you know you ought to do your own Starkiller Cosplay to go with your son. How cool would that be!
-
Shawn I am thinking about the Emperor.
-
Shawn I am thinking about the Emperor.
LOL, that would work too! I figured you more for the hero type!
-
Great pics Spry and the costumes and displays are execellent.

Anything new going on? And is that Gonk going to be an available casted figure since it cant move?

Oh boy, what a year life has dealt me. Sorry for my dropping off the face of the earth guys, I have really missed this place. Many things have changed for me and it has greatly effected my time and energy level at the end of the day. Long story short I have not dropped out of the hobby, just no free time to post wip updates on the very small amount of customizing I have been able to do. I have done a few updates on facebook this year as it is easy from my phone. So I finally had some time to snap a few photos of a project I have been working on all year but in numerous small steps. I have to tell you Hasbro Star Wars has left me so un impressed I have done very little collecting or customizing. The GI Joe line offers so much more quality and play value for your money. Then they hit Five Below and I bought everything I could find and wished I could have found more. When I opened the Budo figure I was blown away! Such a great figure with a beautiful sculpt that begs for multiple repaints. It is also a lot of fun modifying the helmet and armor to add diversity. So I have several of these in finished and WIP stages that I will share with you as I can finish and photograph them. The first Samurai is Toyotomi, also one of my favorites in the series. Featuring modified helmet with cast emblem, mustache sculpted on face plate, cast shin guards, resculpted sash in back to hold flag, bamboo reed flag pole with flag made from POTC figure skirt and sword sheath made from a coffee stirrer.

Hey! Welcome back! Glad to see you're still kicking. Stellar work on your samurai. I've been watching their progress on Facebook.
-
I was wondering where you were. Awesome paint apps. Glad to have you back.
-
Great to see you back Spry. Got one of those samurai on the front page.
-
Welcome back Spry !! That samurai is off the charts awesome !!
-
LE, I hear ya man. Ever since my second child I haven't had much time for customizing. Some of the guys in here probably don't know who I am. Your Samurai has absolutely stunned me! Great job as always.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys and it is great to be back. I still don't have a lot of time on my hands but daylight is getting shorter so that will continually make my work day shorter. Eventually giving me more time to goof off!
-
Wow, Spry, those are really cool. I'll bet they were a blast to work on.
I don't know if my days will get shorter or not. Been a busy year for me too.
-
I love this series. Maybe my favorite project of yours!
-
Thanks again friends! Hang in there Clint, I hope to see you get some free time real soon!
Next up, Code Name: Kusunoki

Nice! Off to share.
I wonder why Flick is making your images so small. Its like we are just getting the thumbnail pic or something?
-
I went to the Flcr site, where the pics are bigger, AND AWESOME!
I have one of these laying around for parts (Bless you, fiVe BELoW).
Your amazing paint job makes that awesome sculpt come alive.
You look like you had so much lot of fun doing it, I've gotta try it myself.
-
Another stunning samurai !!! I must say You are capturing the look and feel very nicely ! Are you using any pictures for reference on the colors you are choosing or are you doing these by what you feel would be an authentic look ?
-
Good to see you back, samuri's looking good.
-
Thanks buddy, it is great to be back! Mr Jedi, a little of both. I have looked over countless reference photos and done some reading. Then went in with that influence and my creative instincts and went for an authentic look. I wanted each figure to have subtle differences in the armor such as different legs or arms or feet. Making the helmets is what really go me addicted. There are a few helmets on my bench without bodies and there are still full figures left to be painted. I have really enjoyed this project and it seens to be bringing a lot of change to my display area. That being said here is my next update, Hasakura. This one was made for a project called GI Joe Reloaded. It was started by Ice Cream Man Customs on facebook and involves many artist that make Joes. I had to wait until his day to be released before I could share here.

So I sent Ice Cream Man the pics and few sentences for the file card he was going to make. He flipped the whole story into this amazing File card and asked for some action photos/something with a background. It was perfect as I just fabricated a lantern/box for a little light and found a cool tree at Tuesday Morning on sale.

Wow, this one is gonna look great on the front page. Just awesome work Spry. I love how unique each one of these looks and the colors are just off the charts awesome!

Very elegant.
This Joe figure was a true winner. I'd love to see a line that features all types of ancient warriors from around the world.

Oh my, sorry it has been so long guys. Thanks for the replies gents, and I do have more Samurai on the way. Today I have a new project to share from the OG13 site, Cobra Recoiled. Here is my entry for an all new cobra character. Please read the file card for her story.

Nice! The Samurai, The Squad Leader, file cards, and back stories. Awesome. And yes, I'm right there with you. Our 2nd is going to turn 1 next month and our oldest just turned 3. No time for much of anything, let alone customizing. Happy New Year to you and yours. Maybe you can get in a couple of customs…hehe.

Looks great Spry. Off to share. That data card is great!
-
Wow, both the samurai and the ninja squad leader are fantastic. The samurai paint job is just gorgeous. I love the hair and scarf on the ninja leader. Great job on the file cards too!
-
Awesome work as always Spry your attention to detail is spot as always.

L.E. you are the man! Your body of work is so extensive now it is mind-blowing.
-
Nice.
I see some cobra shock troopers in there. Dang shame they're so hard to find at a reasonable cost.
-
fantastic work, LE!

Thanks guys! This set was great fun to create and the diversity in subjects is what keeps me going after all these years. I hope to get back into some Star Wars customs soon!

Luke, I néw on the boards, you got some great attention to detail! Csn you help with one of your great customs, the human skiff guard, what figure did you use for the upper part of the body? I learn that you sculpt the shoulder pads and the wrist pads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
