Title: Screaming Samurai Studio Custom Stash.
Post by: ScreamingSamuraiStudio on November 26, 2010, 01:19:02 PM
Greetings Everyone,
My name is Mike, and I am an Artist living in Texas. I work in my spare time on comics na dmodels and recently just got into a kick about doing all of my older Hasbro Star Wars vehicles. I want to thank a couple of members for unknowingly leading me here from Youtube where i post some vlogs on my works in progress.
I'd like to say I'm glad to know I'm not alone in making these Hasbro vehicles look a little better with some spit and some paint. But I've just returned to finishing off this one today, but this is the first one that got me digging back into the old collection I had going back in the nineties.
The backstory for this one, is that this guy is from the Black-Eye Squad out of Dantooine. This guy isn't the best pilot in the galaxy, but he seems to come back home every time, but not for lack of trying to go out in a Blaze of Glory.

Here's a look at the kills...notice the Bird of Prey and the Enterprise
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/ScreamingSamurai/A-WingBlue6_2.jpg)

Today, I re-worked the lights and got rid of the dull radio shack LEDs. They're good for some projects, but when you need some bright intensity..christmas LEDs are the best. These were virtually invisible in normal light before but now can be seen..

First and foremost, welcome to the 'Yards.  Secondly, HOLY MOTHER LOVING COW!  That's more than just a retooling, it's not even an overhaul!  That's a complete makeover, and I don't even think THAT'S the word I'm looking for!  Excellent, most excellent.

Wow,
Hey thanks for the quick responses to this thread.
I've got one more for you today..Again, this is something I've finished a few weeks ago already. I found this early nineties release of the SnowSpeeder out in the garage and decided to re-work this one. I darkened up the base color and went with the gray stripe along the front and back of the engine blocks.
I also moved the the cockpit bucket up about half an inch to bring Dak out into the open a little. I also plan to finish off a small Echo Base Dio for my shelf around this so I have an assortment of Hoth figures for that as well.
Again, thanks for all of the kind words and look forward to posting here more often. I have a few of these sitting on my bench..another A-Wing, a B-Wing...bashing an X-Wing to fit a figure, and Arc-170 and a couple of Jedi Fighters as well..
Here are the promised SnowSpeeder pics for you..

Scremaing Samurai, as someone who regularly customises vehicles I am very impressed with this, your first post.

WHAT A SUPERB A-Wing! the LED's  transform the vehicle into something beyond awesome, it really is one f the best custom examples I've seen. I love the colour scheme and the back story about the pilot made me chuckle!

A very warm welcome to the Yards, I hope you stick around!

Hey there, Hangar
I just wanted to say thanks for those words you dropped on me.
And again for everyone else who has taken the time to say something here. I'm still looking around all of the forums here to see what's been going on. And I even got up off my butt today and went to the bench again to blow the dust off of some long neglected projects and some that just haven't gotten off the ground yet.
I've decided to repaint a Naboo Fighter I've been working on. I went with the standard yellow and i thought it might look better with a sky blue metallic finish. I also took apart my B-Wing for priming and painting, and also got moving further along on the other A-Wing here.
Anyway, before I'm done for the night, I snapped a couple of pics of the cockpit tub for the A-Wing. I still haven't begun to lace any of the fiber optics through, but there won't be quite as many as the previous version. And I've also started on scribing in the panel lines back in after sanding down the raised lines. You can fit an X-Wing and two Tie Fighters down the trenches I carved in on the first one, so I won't be going as  nuts this time around for sure. Lessons learned on the first one.
Hopefully, this time around I don't have to go for such a beat up look to it.

Holy Screaming Samurai! What an amazing thread you have started here! The B-Wing is off the freakin' chain man! That color scheme is very inventive and one I have never seen used before. The heavy weathering is perfect! That isn't an easy task either. Most times you see weathering that heavy it doesn't look realistic, your techniques have really pulled it off to the point that it look real and very well done, layer after layer, battle after battle, very convincing. The LED's are awesome and add even more realistic qualities to your vehicle. Man I wish I knew how to do that! Then you give us the composit shot with a little heat on his tail to totally blow our mind!

The Snow speeder looks fantastic! I love all the details you drought out with a better paint job and the light weathering. So you moved the seat forward huh? Could you tell us how you did that? any comparison or WIP pics for us? The effect is great now that you can see Dak back there waiting to get fried. Very well done and this is something I would like to do on one of mine. Very well done!

The Naboo fighter cockpit is looking sweet and thanks for the progress shots. I love WIP pics to show all the work you have done so please keep them coming!

Lastly, Welcome to the yards! I hope you will be here for a while and continue sharing your work with us.

D'oh!

Yeah, I think the flub occurred after reading I had a B-Wing on the bench and a Naboo fighter. But Nontheless, thanks for the kind words there, Luke.
I don't have very many work in progress pictures but I do have a YouTube channel that I post my vlogs on the builds. I admit, I haven't been very active this last month or so, but trying to juggle a few projects tends to do that.

In fact it was through YouTube that I started to learn a little about The Imperial Shipyards....but I thought it was just the channel. I'm glad I discovered the site and can't wait to show off a little more here, and I actually have some old fan fic comic pages that I may share in the appropriate forum one of these days.

that a-wing takes the cake.  As someone who has also used the christmas light LED's in the past I have to agree whole-heartedly that they are much brighter than standard LED's.  You just have to find the right parts to make them work...

you mentioned fiber optics in one of your posts, do you have any WIP shots that show the set up inside the vehicles for the electronics?  Im curious to see how you incorporated a battery housing, wiring, LED's, etc into the frame of the vehicle.

I've been wanting to get an AC-DC converter to use in my next customs so that I can plug my lighted vehicles into a wall-outlet and display them with the LED's on at all times instead of having to rely on batteries...

anyway, the lights are just a small part of the customs and your weathering and paint jobs are phenomenal.  Glad to be able to view your work and I hope to see more.  enjoy your time in the yards!

Welcome to the Shipyards, SS! These vehicles of yours look great. I love the heavy weathering on the a-wing and your use of leds brings it over the top. Yes, if you can manage, show us some more wip shots so we can experience your technique more first hand.

Hey there,
To answer a few questions on the A-Wing, I've just got these few shots for you to take a look at the inside.

Top view of the A-wing with the top removed. I removed the screws when I floated over the holes on the bottom, but the two halves hold together quite well. I left open for easy maintenance and I still haven't wired a switch into the bottom so I don't have to remove the batteries to turn it off. Again, I'm not expert and everything I learned i got off of youtube.
One source of infinite knowledge has been ModelManTom on youtube. He and I have a similar background where we were both into faux finishes and a variety of mixed media knowledge. He also has a bunch of practical tips on finding some resources to make your models shine.
Anway, back to it..Here's that topside shot
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/ScreamingSamurai/A-Wing/Blue6lookinside.jpg)

Here's a shot of one of the aluminum tubes I've used to funnel the light of the LED directly to the trimmed ends of the fibers. The first is the located at the front for the dash lights.

And for the back wall lights and the two lights at the tail end of the A-Wing..

And one more of the front end..this last LED lights up the radar and other panels on the dash I scratch built from a couple of sheets of styrene. I'm using LEDs from a dollar store string of battery operated Christmas Lights. $4 for a string of thirty lights isn't so bad, and they take a ton of the guess work out of the lighting of the fighter.

And a shot of the battery pack. There was a nice little slot for the pack at the back end of the A-Wing. I used a pack of three AAA batteries to light everything up and again, with the christmas lights..no guess work about resistors, and no soldering either.

That's it for this post, but I just found a bunch of the WIP progress pics from the canopy bucket.

Hey there,
I have an assortment of pics that I took along the way as I worked on the A-Wing.

All primed up and ready to go..

And after a couple of hits with the sandpaper along the raised panels lines. I've learned to just get this step done with the dremel tool. With the tool, it can be done in a day as opposed to three days of heavy sanding by hand.

The next step was scribing the panel lines back in. On this first one, I went too heavy and too deep with the lines. But here it is after the scribing and soon after another coat of primer.

And the following are the progress of the canopy bucket. All done with a sheet of styrene and a couple of pieces of aluminum tubing.

Just after paint and already adding some of the scuffing and blaster marks.
NOTE: The colors I used in order:
A Basecoat of Bright Silver spray paint, followed by a coat of Satin white and Orange spray paints..both by Krylon.
And this is essentially the finish line..minus the decals.

Okay ..One more post for the weekend and then I'm done. Last night of vacation and I'm not quite ready to head back out to the grindstone, but I got another one closer to completion tonight.
I already painted and weathered this one as the traditional yellow, but last week I thought it would be better suited with another color. I also had the cockpit in a state of incompletion for quite some time. This one was a bit of a problem painting, I hadn't tried to paint any of the soft plastic till this one, and it's tough. Basically. the paint never set up and stayed a tacky on the tips till it finally came off with the rub of a finger. I ended up switching my base coat to Krylon's Fusion Spray paint..since that makes a chemical bond with the plastic. you just have to be mindful to allow it enough time to cure before touching it since finger prints can end up in the plastic.
Anyway, I still have to hook up the original electronics to see if those still work and I have one blue LED hooked up in the back to a watch battery for the cockpit lights. All that's really left to do is just hook up the electronics and then apply the weathering again to the blue..a couple of decals and this can go on the shelf.

A shot of the front end..A couple of flaws in the chrome finish became battle damage.

I wasn't able to get rid of the yellow plastic inside of the canopy so I may have to add some yellow accents here and there.

Anyway, that's it for now. Hope you all enjoy the next installment. Any questions you may have, I will do my best to answer them for you. Feel free to ask away and you can also catch some more of my works in progress on my Youtube channel.
Once I figure out what I'm doing I'll have to make a banner for the forum.

WOW! steps back from the monitor in amazement!!! the wip images of the A-Wing show a true perfectionist at work. Second WOW! re-painted Naboo fighter looks fan----tas---tic! the colour really changes the dynamic of the vehicle, from a sleek, rather delicate looking machine to a mean, whip fast strike interceptor. Love...it!

Hey, thanks again to everyone who has just come by to take a look and left a kind word or two. I really appreciate it..so much so that I've been walking around here like I'm Superman.
To answer flaccid's question about the decals...I set my own in photoshop or illustrator, I work as a graphic artist so I usually just size out some circles and such and then set up my set according to those dimensions.
I have to sit down and figure out what I'm going to do with the N-1 fighter (and thanks for those who reminded me what it was), but I may just stick to some black markings similar to original. Or hell, I may just deviate and go nuts and mark it all up with stripes and access panels.

For those interested, you can go to decalpaper.com to order some sheets. You can get them in packs of 10 or 20 sheets and usually run about a 1.00 a sheet. Testor's also has a decal spray for the paper. But as a caution..spray those sheets in a well ventilated area or you'll be found an hour later just wandering through the neighborhood in a daze. You can print the sheets with any ink jet printer so nothing really special is required to make them.
I'm also starting to ntice a few of you that I have been watching on YouTube for awhile. It's good to meet all you finally and can't wait to see what some of you have up your sleeves now.

Mate firstly welcome aboard and hope you enjoy your time here.

Secondly your work is very impressive to say the least, everything from the retooling to the scratch built parts to the painting and weathering are exceptional. The detailing you put into each project really stands out and shows how much you really love doing this.

I look forward to seeing more of your amazing work in the near future.

I'm also starting to ntice a few of you that I have been watching on YouTube for awhile. It's good to meet all you finally and can't wait to see what some of you have up your sleeves now.

Thanks so much for that link, back in my 1:6 scale modeling days I used to use a school transparency, hairspray, and I killed a few really great projects that way.  Thanks so much !!!

Very nice work SSS!!!!!   Wow.  that is all i can say.  The weathering, which i am a big fan of, is top notch.  The best I have seen.   You and Hemble take the cake when it comes to realistic weathering.  Which as was mentioned is very difficult to pull of with genuine realism.   These ships look straight out of the movies!!   Very nice work and welcome to the Yards!!!!       Would love to see you hit a clone trooper in the same fashion.    rd

Hey there, Mungo
Nice work you had up on the front page today. And thanks, I actually have a couple of Jedi Fighters on the bench right now. Currently, they're behind the B-wing and the A-wing but I should be getting to them soon.
I'm on the move to try and finish all of those before January 22. I'll be exhibiting these at a local comic and toy show on that day. But anyway, moving right along to the next update, I actually have to run out and grab some more decal bonder, but here's a shot of the decal sheet I set up for the Naboo Fighter.
I still want to add a few more little detail bits for the sheet, like a pilot name and maybe a couple of warning labels in the naboo font.

Also thinking about working on my first custom figure that I may get to work on later on this weekend as well. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend, I know I will...I will be busy, but productive.

  Take Care, y'all

I can see the image fine, it is very dark though and that may be the problem for some of you. Tripple S I just wanted to say I enjoyed your videos you are a very funny guy. I love the way you sabotage all the projects your girlfriend wants you to do so you can get out of work and then go modeling. Brilliant! One of these days she will watch your videos and figure you out though. haha Again very nice work!

You'll be glad to know, Luke..
My girlfriend is cleaning the bathroom on the other side of the house and there is a mirror in the living room leaning up against the wall it's supposed to be mounted on.

Instead, I'm posting these pics that I snapped while she was looking for some cleaning supplies...I told her I was looking for the nails.

The B-Wing went from zero to lightspeed yesterday and I'm almost done with the paint bases. I had no idea what I wanted to do with it and came up with this half inspired scheme. It's two toned with the top a sky grey and the bottom white. Anyway, these are the pics I took this morning after getting most of the base colors on. I still have to design the decal sheet and figure out what marking I want to paint along the rest of the hull.

SSS, I sympathise with the girlfriend lark....sounds just like my antics. I once custom painted an entire Big Millennium Falcon while my wife took the kids round to see their Grandma for an hour, I think that was my best "custom while doing a chore"....

Love the B-Wing images, especially the weathering to the cockpit pod.

I've gotten Ninja-like with my work.

I've made some progress on the other A-Wing this week. I haven't started wiring the LEDs yet, but I did notice a flaw in my design. I mistakingly used the wrong size fiber optics. They're smaller than the others I used and probably won't be so bright as the other one. So, in the next couple of days I'll decide if I want to go through the trouble of pulling the ones I've got in there already and starting over again with the correct strands.
Anyway, on to the paint job. It's pretty basic right now and resembles something right off the show room floor..which needs to be changed soon. I still need to go over the A-Wing with the Dremel tool to make some blaster marks and dirty this thing up quite a bit. i'm not going to go for the heavy look this time around..I may just make him look like he's a half way decent pilot who gets his bird dirty only when he flies through a debris cloud.

The red and blue buttons on the dash board are these nifty little self adhesive jewel thingies I found while following my girlfriend around the girlie section of the craft store.

Hey, thanks guys
And luke, I should be posting a video this weekend at some point to talk about the little rhinestone buttons I used for the cockpit details.

I'm not feeling the paint job on the B-Wing. and I don't know if it's just too much blue at this point. I may visit that one later in the coming week. This weekend will be busy...as a side note. I'm going out to Austin, Texas tomorrow to start the big campaign for the web comic I've been promising for about ten years now.

   Digression Alert:
Even though I identify myself as a comic book artist to mostly everyone I meet...the sad truth is that I have never published my own book. I've always had issues with companies and editors trying to mess with my junk, or I've passed on the book when another project comes along..another problem has just been my own procrastination.
So, this weekend I'm committing myself to getting this story done. It's way past time and I think it's time to shut up about it and get to work...

But after I get these star wars vehicles done.

PM me for information on the web comic.

Nice update, this looks great!!

I love that I'm not the only one who gets crazy about the "backstory" to every paint job and blaster marks.

The B-Wing looks fun, maybe that you're working on an A-wing with similar colors is messing with your head?  They both look great to my eyes.  But who am I to offer advise to you guys?!?

Can't wait to see what you do with these, the jewels idea is great!

Maybe I'll make the B-wing part of the same squad...but I don't know about different types of fighters being in the same flight group...i've never been in any branch of the military so I have no clue. But for the most part, I just haven't been feeling it on the B-Wing. I may try to go a little more WWII inspired on the next go around, and maybe once I get some decals on this thing, it might start coming together. Typically..if I feel like it's going to be a train wreck, it may actually turn out fairly well.
But I have to wrap up these three fighters in the next couple of weeks if I want to try to get the two Jedi Fighters ready for the Jan 22 show coming up.

Anyway, there should be a video post later this morning before I hit the road for the comic book store event in Austin.

So, I totally forgot to show you the little rhinestones I used on the cockpits, but here's an update to the A-Wing #2. The first layer of weathering has been applied, now I have to seal it with a semi-gloss and then go over it again with a dry brushing of silver and some white. I'll try to get another update tonight on the cockpit with the trimmed fiber optics..they're smaller than what I used before they still show up with proper lighting from beneath,

You're starting to spoil me with those front page updates, Tamer.
But I decided to go ahead and snip the ends of the fibers on the dash board and fire up the lights and I think I like it this time around. I also borke up some pieces from a Star Trek Maquis model to add some greeblies to the barren dash of the B-Wing..I'll have some pics of that later before the end of the night. But here are some shots from earlier today.

Hey there,
Alright as promised, I finally got a chance to squeeze off a couple of pics of my status on the B-Wing. I still want to hit this with plenty of markings..and even though I've already weathered the living hell out of it. Again, I wasn't happy with the results of the previous color scheme and started over with a base coat of  silver. The intent was now to make it resemble the bomber that terrorized Japan at the end of the war. I think I may call this one, The Dirty Lady.

Hey, Luke..Ironically, my girlfriend was nagging at me to get started on this stuff again..so we can get rid of it at the next Toy Show here in town.
The real reason for my absence was to train my hands to start working like a comic book artist again...yeah, I know that sounds pretty pretentious, but I haven't drawn in a long time and I used to be a really bad ass underground comic artist...till I entered the world of "professional" comics.
But enough is enough, I think it's time for me to take my mantle as the Kurt Cobain of comics.
  But I digress...

I have managed to come out of wallowing around in my artistic miseries long enough to try and get this B-Wing finished. I need to sit down and work on some decals for this one. Somewhere on this beast I want to put some kind of WW II inspired nose art and other markings. But being as dirty as it already, I think I need to add some more color to make this thing pop a little more. This B-wing also still comes apart..and the excuse for that is well..I was a little lazy...ERRRRR..I want to add some photo-etched grills behind those burnt out vents along the main hull..Thinking of that, I may add some blaster damage beneath some of the larger panels and dremel out a few blaster hits.
But anyway..more on this one later.

Hey there,
As always it's great to come back to a bunch of cool comments.

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to finish the B-Wing..I've been winging it the whole time. But I think it's time to go ahead and announce that I've started working at our local hobby shop. So, now I have access to all the materials I need.
I still can't help but rub my hands in a greedy evil genius manner when I think about how crazy it is working there. I get to work inventory and see everything that comes in first.
So far, I've got another 1/350 scale Enterprise-A and a Fine Molds Slave-1 coming in...which I get at a CRAZY discount. This is going to lead to me getting kicked out of the house when you can't fit anymore books on our shelf cause I've got two big star trek models sitting there.
I know, I know...star trek sucks..but the Enterprise kicks butt.

AWSOME!!! I wish my B-Wing had come out as slick as yours is coming along bt maybe one day I'll catch up to your skill level.

As for nose art I would really look at doing some pinup styled work on the outside (far left side as you look at the B-Wing landed from head on) cockpit area but I would say use the rear because there is a ton more room back there. I am working on some ideas myself for this same thing and I have my little bro who is a comic artist too working on a few pieces for me. I'll be honest and say they won't be for the children but also not quite X-rated either.
My great uncle flew B-25's in North Africa and my Grandfather worked on bombers out in the Pacfic Islands during WWII and I have some old photos of what they had on a few planes and we are using them as a guideline.

I was thinking of trying out those water decals that you can print yourself on an inkjet but I am not sure how they are. Didn't you use them on your A-Wing? Any tips or words of advice on using them if you did?

Anyway awsome job as always I have your YouTube channel bookmarked and I am always looking to see if you have new stuff up! keep up the great work!

Dude, you know I love this with all the various color changes on some panels, well, all paint aps and the weathering is just perfect. The decals are looking great too, but that pilot, he is just so cool! I am feeling the WWII vibe along with an older sci fi twist. The helmet cut down then adding goggles is one of the best touches and really brings this whole package together...and you are not even done?...

As you may already tell..I have been running  around the house with this. And especially now that I have a pilot for the Dirty Bird. The goal is to get one nice set of pics all around with the A-wings for a photo montage of them on a Star Destroyer run.
Something similar to what Jules does with his stuff. And I'm glad that he's been there to break all sorts of ground with his web comic series...But anyway, I would have never thought to try this out if hadn't come to this forum. So here we go..My B-Wing pilot..the man, the myth..at least in his own head.

oooo, oo, ooooo, ooo!   To cool!  How'd you get it on the ship?

  Hey there, Jedi
I actually found this on Ebay for 16 bucks. And I think I've had this for about a year now, before I knew what to do with it.

Mate sensational work as always your skills are always a joy to look at.

  Thanks, dude.
You know, coming from you, that's always a great compliment.

Oh yeah, this update is now on our front page.

Again, thank you as always for that, Tamer.

Alrighty, I just learned how to do that this morning. Believe it or not. And thanks to everyone here who has come by to take a look at my toy stash. I have a couple more things to do on this bird and then I think I can call her done..one of the things I need to do is run out and grab a new ink cartridge for my printer so I can finally get some decals done.
I had a late night last night trying to get this done. I ripped out the big clunky piece of greeblie from the dash board in the cockpit and got a little creative with some evergreen plastic tubing that I had left over from the first A-Wing I worked on.
   Anyway...the pics..

HOLY RUSTED OLD BUCKETS, Luke!

But no styrene tubing on the buttons, If you're speaking of the red buttons with the gold rim, those are how the labels are. I PROMISE to do a video tonight..I've been slacking quite a bit with the videos lately. You know, I took a part time job to concentrate on artwork...none of which is actually done yet. I've just been racing to get the B-Wing ready for a show later this summer and a model contest that I will be running in August at HobbyTown USA.
And since it's a model show, I think I have to get some actual model building done...But anyway..I know I've bombed the hell out of this thread over the weekend and I really do appreciate the multiple Front Page nods this week, Tamer.
But the last time this weekend, I promise. I promised the girlfriend that I would clean off her precious kitchen table this weekend so we could actually enjoy having a table..and not have to enjoy our meal with a B-Wing, an A-Wing and about thirty assorted action figures crowded around. So, I cleaned off the table and immediately stretched out the B-Wing for some more pics..this time around with the last round of markings that I threw down..and yes..they're pink.
They were actually supposed to be a dark blue, but I finally ran out of ink in my printer. It's not like it wasn't warning me, I just thought it was going to be like the rapture. Anyway, rather than let the sheet go to waste, I just used them anyway.
Anyway, apologies for the redundancy this weekend, but I just have a couple of more to throw down and this will be considered completed.
Here we go..table is cleaned off, and my big plastic playmat has been removed..she's off doing the laundry so...BAM..
  Back on the table.

Well, tons of thanks to you, Tamer.
I really do appreciate all of the front page attention for this project. I have to say that I've bounced around a few modeling forums already and have been laughed off most for not following the norm on the paint finishes I decided to use. I think this has quickly become the only forum I visit on a daily basis..not only daily, but hourly sometimes. I love the whole idea of finally finding a spot where everyone else was working on repainting the Star Wars vehicles and figures.
To make another point, other forums really got the better of me and I was starting to hang up the hobby again. I started to get an idea or two about repainting some of my son's old Star Wars toys...then I ran into Hangarbay94's work over at the Resin Illuminati...and then I was hooked.
Finally, I believe it was when Wraith9 posted his video of the Imperial Shipyards..anyway..longer story made short..I found a new place to show off.

Anyway, in keeping with the tradition of showing off..here's a couple of pics for some up-coming projects.
First off, I think some of you have seen my other thread in the Custom Figures forum. I've retouched an old Sandtrooper figure. Well that sparked an idea for a Tatooine Diorama. So, to expand on this I pulled out an old Dewback for a repaint job. I'm still waiting for my primer to cure, but here I am at the base coat stage of the Dewback. I prefer this sculpt to the new version and it is virtually the same pose from the sideshow replicas new 12" version. I'll be using that as my paint ref. For this one, I will also be switching to Vallejo paints. I've heard nothing but good things about these and after experimenting with the face painting set..I tend to believe everyone now.
Inspired by Hemble's work, an element for my Tatooine dio, "These MIGHT be the droids we're looking for."

And the landspeeder which I plan to mod ever so slightly with my weak scratch building skills
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/ScreamingSamurai/Two%20Speeders%20and%20a%20Dewback/LanderspeederBefore.jpg)

It is these types of comments as well as dealing with some of this mysef first hand other places that caused Wayne, Pat, and I to create this place. Now we are not against critique at all, but as we all know some folks seem to spend their lives trying to bring others' work down it seems and although I will never understand those types of folks, I do understand they exist. We will never allow flamers here. We just want to show the great work folks are doing and learn a few customizing things ourselves along the way. The whole idea with a hobby is to have fun, at the very least not ruin it for other folks who are having fun!

  Well Thank You, Jules.
Coming from you that's always huge. And I love what you did with the vehicle on Nar Shadaar. I'd like to get with you to see what you think about it flying in the background of my fan fic.

Anyway, Back to the bench..or what is my girlfriend's kitchen table for now. This morning I had the chance to start the landspeeder I was able to finish this next element for my first dio. Again, this is heavily inspired by what I have been seeing on Hemble's thread and website. I love his stuff and only hope to get the detail done as nicely as his. I can never get the subtleties like he does.
So, this is what I got away with today. From start to finish...
I gave the entire landspeeder a base coat of this to simulate the metal underneath the paint.
I admit these are not what you will find at the hobby store, but this is what I found in the cabinet in our bathroom. She's been asking where this tube has gone and I immediately turn the subject to how fast I can run down the hallway with the B-Wing.
After a modest smudging of some of this mask I throw down some salt on top...And it peels off just like a masking solution should...
Plus the landspeeder now smells of strawberries and cucumber. After a spraying of some Indigo Blue that I had sitting on the bench, here are the results.
After sanding the mask and salt off, this is the result.
I also had this piece left over from an old Runabout model from Star Trek: Deep Space 9 . I thought it would add a nice variation on the landspeeder, but not enough for a bunch of heat stroked imperial sandtroopers who need to turn in some kind of bust before the end of the day...and Luke and Ben have already passed the check point.

Hey, Damon
It was good to meet you out at the show. I never thought I would meet a fellow shipyarder here in town, but good to know that this big world gets smaller and smaller everyday. Equally good to see you at Hobbytown later that week. Hope those paints worked for you.

To fill everyone else in on this story.. I met Damon at a Local Toy and Comic show, I usually get a table at these events and sit and draw while people stroll by. This time around I decided to haul out all of the custom vehicles I have been working on. I priced everything pretty high cause I REALLY didn't want to sell it.,,but anyway..don't tell my girlfriend. The only thing I sold was a small tie fighter model I had sitting on my table. It was sold to a child whose mother had forgotten to give his daily dose of ritalin after he broke one of the wings off.
And I didn't draw a thing that day.

ARRRRGH!
okay..I've been getting myself out of it with procrastination..but I have to make the announcement.
I am putting the Silver B-Wing up for grabs on our Etsy page.
Same thing with the Blue Speeder.
I have to figure out a couple of logistics, But I thought I should pass the word. They're kinda like my puppies, but like any pup it must leave the nest..and make room for the next one I get to paint.
Circle of life on the Bench, I guess.
I've never attempted to sell one of my vehicles, so I don't know what kind of reaction to get, but here goes nothing....

  More info later..

that is just insane, that has to be one of the best paint apps i've ever seen and a clever way to get it done.  if you ever get a chance doing something like that on a Slave 1 would rock

Hi SSS, I just wanted to echo all the other members responses, your work is trully some of the best , it is a pleasure to view this, and thanks for the mini tutorials you provide, gives us less experienced part time customisers the chance to learn to do this the way it should be done. Excellent work allround mate.

Wow,

Hey guys, I didn't know this thread was still active.

Thanks a ton for all of the great comments, and if there's ever anything you need to see, just send me a PM or a line on my youtube page. I admit, I've jumped off the Hasbro vehicles for a bit to clear off my bench, but I still have an Arc-170 and a Jedi Starfighter to paint.
I will be posting my work, for the time being, in the Models and scratchbuilding forum for a while. There, I have posted some Work in Progress shots of a Fine Molds Jedi Starfighter, Capt. Lee Archer's P-51b Mustang and I will begin working on the MPC Cut-Away version of Han Solo's Millennium Falcon as part of an internet group build...some of those pics have been posted already.

Again, thanks for the support. You guys make this hobby fun.

May I be your Padawan :o? I'm considering repainting an X-Wing and new CW Y-Wing. Do you just spray paint it, or buy large amounts of acrylic paint? I imagine spray painting would probably be easiest/fastest.

Mike, my apologies for my late reply to your thread. So many wonderful vehicles that I had never seen before. I remember clicking through the first couple of pages, then paramedics were standing over me, telling me to relax and breathe. They explained that with your work, this is very common. As fresh oxygen filled my lungs again, I tempted fate, and tried to look at more pix when I awoke in the ICU at my local hospital. They are taking very good care of me. The nurse said I should be able to pee on my own soon, but the moment I'm released, I'll be right back to my monitor admiring your incredible wor......
"911, what's your emergency?"
"It's my husband. He was looking at Screaming Samu.."
"Say no more, ma'am. We get this nationwide everyday. Response teams are in route..."

Love your work!
