Ok, here's where I'll post my "how I set up this shot" pics.

Light reflector made from a piece of styrofoam ceiling tile (you'll recognize it as the backdrop for my 'Yards contest entry) reflecting my LED flashlight. I used my main camera set to "Macro II" - or "super-close macro" - and actually set the camera down inside the cargo bay pointing at the figs. You can see two small LED accent lights in the shot, as well.

In this shot, you can see the webcam in the cockpit, pointing through the rear hatch. Well, I pretty much wedged the main camera into the same position and zoomed the telephoto in a touch. Again, the scrap tile was used to reflect the light from my flashlight into the bay area.

I had two small LED lights in the cockpit for this shot. I removed the starboard viewscreen and shot the pic thru the opening, using my main camera.

I need to get some small led flashlights.

Go to your favorite party-supply place and look for "champaigne lights" or such. They are small LED accent lights designed to be put inside ballons, tied onto party-favors, used as drink-tags, or whatever. I got a pkg of 12 at WalMart on clearance for $7. They use button batteries and twist on and off. As you can see in my pics, they give you a bit of a blue light.

I think I'm gonna make a partial ceiling for the cargo-bay with some visible, but nothing fancy, detailing on it to see if I can get the right "feel" for it.

Here's the difference between no fill-light and a fill-light. I set up an LED booklight just to the right of the trooper in order to eliminate the deep shadows being cast by the overhead "sun."

Doc, personally I like shadows.
LED lamps give a similar light to the sun, they have a high colour temperature or something like that, which gives more shadows to objects, this can be used to your advantage. A standard incandescent bulb gives a much warmer, yellowy light and a much wider spread.
My favourite light source is LED.

Since someone
made fun of pointed out my styrofoam blocks still look like styrofoam, I decided I should change that a little. So, I played with the spraypaints some this evening.
First up, three random bits of styrofoam packing blocks, a section of a toilet-tissue roller, and two short softdrink cans. The cans have been altered - one has the lid from a 1gal Gatorade jug glued atop it and the other has a couple of electrical conduit bits I found at Lowe's. Everything has been painted and grimed-up with Krylon spray-paints.

Next, I added a length of black zip-tie to the bottom edge of the gray "industrial building" wall. This helps hide the wavy gap there as well as provides some visual detail.

Finally, I used the last of the zip-tie, including the head, on the inside. Might be a lift-control, light-switch, power-plug... who knows? It's another bit of visual interest.

Y'know, Jules has inspired my Muse. (again) In response to his 10-minute scrapyard challenge, I'm going to make a quickie figure display that is more than the kitchen counter with a Ramen Noodle carton backdrop - and I'll do it out of rubbish! (mainly) I've got a couple of interesting heavy-weight boxes that frozen foods came in. The way they are assembled, they could be turned into an alcove with Jules' wall-sticker decorations with a fold-down floor. Then, once a photo-shoot is done, they could be folded up and shelved out of the way! This would give me a great way to photo new figs without coughing up a ton of $$ for the "mechanical chain base" kits like Jokabofe uses (which I would DEARLY love to have!!), but would still have plenty of visual interest. And, if I plan it out right, could have modular/replaceable/changeable details. I'll likely do two - one darker in color and one lighter - better to cover the bases for a variety of figures.
Now that I'm wrapping up the first two figs, I'll take a new direction for a bit before diving back into the other two. Work in a larger scale/broader scope for a bit.

Yes, they are! I'll do up a tutorial eventually... I was literally being dragged out the door yesterday as I was posting the pics. I was also working on just over 4 hrs of sleep after a 21-hr day and didn't think to have the tut pre-written.

Oh and the Diorama contest is only open to people in the U.S. I don't suppose one of you guys would want to be the owner the Endor Platform for a while? I'd pay for the shipping, you'd just need to take care of it for me! NOT!

First you start with two tuna cans - WELL-washed and dry. Then you clamp them open sides together and run a bead of superglue around the seam and allow to dry overnight...

The shipping container and small ammo cans were designed for 25mm wargaming but as you can see work out nicely with action figs. I took the small cooler (white "ammo can") and clipped it from the sheet, tossed it into Irfan View, and hit "landscape; print to fit page." It printed out almost the exact same size as the shipping container, right at 300% the size of the small cooler. Focus is fuzzy at that size, tho, but they work.
I'm thinking about fleshing these small boxes into solid 3D models and molding/casting them.
