Title: PadawanPainter's Custom Pieces & Chessboard Project
Post by: PadawanPainter on April 26, 2015, 02:45:38 AM
This is the first of 32 pieces that I will be making for a custom 'Imperial vs Rebel' chess set.  This is the first finished piece.

Imperial Pawn #1: Jungle planet.

The figure is repainted, mainly due to my concern that the soft plastic would age differently (yellowing) than the hard plastic.  Each Imperial Pawn will portray a different planet with different terrain.  This will contrast and tie in to the Rebel Pawns, who will all have the same terrain groundwork.

The story behind the Rebel and Imperial Pawns:  The Imperial pawn all have different terrain that is to represent the missions/planets that the 8-man special forces Rebel unit operates on (the Rebel pawns represent a squad of elite commandos).  So, as the Rebel pawns go on missions (face up against Imperial pawns), the team is slowly getting killed off on these highly dangerous hit-and-run operations on planets controlled by the Empire.

Here's a piece I did over a year ago.  I'm just getting around to taking pictures of it now that I'm dedicating more time to producing work.

It's supposed to be a battle-hardened veteran of Geonosis near the end of the battle.

Farmland patrol Stormtrooper.

This is oppressive occupation.  The stormtrooper doesn't feel like walking around the field, so he goes right through it, trampling the farmer's crops and livelihood.

Title: Re: PadawanPainter's Custom Pieces & Chessboard Project
Post by: PadawanPainter on November 15, 2015, 09:37:23 PM
They are 1:18!

It would be too big at 1:12.  Each square on the board will already be 5 inches due to Vader and Palpatine's bases being 3.5 inch diameter.

Eventually I'm going to do a Republic and Separatist chess board as well.  And Greivous, Droidekas, Senate Guards, and Magna Guards have 3.5 inch bases as well.

Rebel Alliance pawns complete!

Rebel pawns have the same groundwork since they are a single commando team.  They will face Imperial pawns, each with different groundwork representing different missions/planets.

He ditched "the white" and picked up more comfortable cloth fatigues.  He also kept his standard-issue Imperial blaster, just in case the team needs heavier suppressing fire.

I don't know!  If anyone is in Houston, we can play a round somewhere!  Then my next problem to solve is finding a safe way to transport them all!  Maybe I can get sheets of magnets that are used for refrigerator magnets, cut them to circles, attach them to the bottoms of each base, then build a traveling case with internal magnetic surface.  What do you think? Is there a better way for transportation?

Thanks Ron!!

As a big fan of your dioramas, that's quite a compliment.  I'm a student of World War II history.  It's always fascinated and horrified me, kept my interest.

This trooper idea was first inspired by the mod called "Awakening of the Rebellion" for the game Star Wars:Empire At War on PC.  The modder put in special camouflaged troopers for one of the hero ATAT units.

Here is a Work in Progress.

Boba Fett. Western theme, so I switched his rifle to Cad Bane's Winchester. I patched the dents in helmet and cod piece with putty in order to more accurately paint an earlier Boba, with less battle-worn armor. Groundwork needs more more work.

I was taking a break from Star Wars Battlefront PC.

Thanks!

But unfortunately I'm now outsourcing the board to a master furniture maker down the road.  My more logical side won out over my idealist side that wanted to build the entire thing.  I just don't have the tools necessary to make a high-quality board.  It would require planer, table saw, router, random pattern sander, etc.  Way too much investment into a skillset and art form that I'm not ready to get into.  Some day though, I'm going to get into wood-working, but not now.

But I'm really excited about this craftsmen I found.  Looked at his portfolio, and he finds really awesome rustic wood to use, even cooler looking than the wood I found.

I might have him also make me some cool custom wood bases for figurines and dioramas.

I started a few more projects.

This one is inspired by pictures I've seen from Afghanistan, with US and NATO units, on patrol, walking through and around the poppy fields of Kandahar Province.

I'm going to try replicate the poppy plants, with the poppy pods ready to be picked.  I won't be able to produce exact replications of the plant, as that would take an inordinate amount of time.  But I do believe I've come up with a decent substitute that will look similar enough.

Chess board update:

Only need a base board, side trim, then finish painting the Rebel figures!

I was too ambitious with the maple and walnut I first picked, as I didn't have any real way of preparing the boards for working into a board.  And, since I didn't want anyone else's hand in the creation of the board, I though of using hardwoods.  This way I could work within the parameters of the woodworking tools I have, in this case a simple table saw.  I picked out a cool rustic used-looking mesquite and hickory.  They seemed like light wood, which is good because I think this board is going to be moderately heavy!

Thanks!  I'll be working on it this weekend and deciding on some construction-related plans.  Hopefully, I'll have the whole project finished in a couple weeks.

The squares are 5"x5".  I built the board around the figures.  In other words, thanks to Darth Vader and Palpatine being wider than their bases, the entire board needed squares wide enough to accommodate their poses (lightsaber and lightning)!

I need to figure out how to display it!  I don't want it to get dusty and what not.  I might need to buy or build a clear plastic casing to put over it, like professional dioramas have in museums!  I probably won't even use it.  It was just an idea I wanted to bring to life!

Your chessboard turned out great! The whole ensemble is really quite amazing. Excellent work.

I like the helmet choice for your Stormtrooper commander as well, is makes him stand out. Really nice job!

Thanks!  I'm still working on it.  Need to do more sanding, sawing, staining, varnishing, etc.

Next year, I'm going to do the Republic vs Separatist chess set.

After this, I have to finish Boba Fett dio, Clone patrol dio, Kuat weapons expo dio, Endor guerrilla war dio.

Chessboard was finished a couple days ago.  Just got started taking pictures of the last 8 pieces.  I had to rebuild my old photo setup with the marble chess board and black backdrop (been using bright white backdrop for my non-chess pieces).

I'll start posting pictures this evening.

It's pretty much done!  Just time to roll out pictures of the last pieces.

I'm still trying to figure out how to take decent pictures of the board with the pieces on it.  40" is difficult to take professional-looking pictures without an actual photo studio!

Probably going to get some black drapes and hang them up as a backdrop.

Here's the Rebel Fleet Trooper.  It's the other chess rook!!

For the High Command Security Trooper, the idea was the base was stone from one of the Rebel hidden bases, pulling security for Rebel High Command.

For this guy, I wanted to pull from the movies, so I designed the base to be as though he's on a rebel cruiser, stepping out from a side room with dirty unpolished flooring onto the polished white panels.

Rebel bishop 1:  General Crix Madine

"I formed the storm commandos and led them in their early missions. It was those successes that put us in a position to unleash a biological weapon, the Candorian plague, on Dentaal. We were just following orders. That was the last order I took from the Empire. I defected to the Alliance, but I'll be paying my debt to Dentaal until the day I die."

Rebel bishop 2:  Admiral Gial Ackbar

Gial Ackbar was a veteran male Mon Calamari soldier and revolutionary leader during the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, and the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. Throughout his sixty years of service, Ackbar was regarded as a brilliant tactician.

Ackbar was captain of the Mon Calamari Guard during the Clone Wars and fought in the Battle of Mon Cala, in which he helped to secure Prince Lee-Char's ascent as King of Mon Cala and repel the Confederacy of Independent Systems. After the rise of the Galactic Empire, Ackbar became the foremost military commander in the Alliance to Restore the Republic, emerging as a symbol of defiance against the Empire's subjugation of non-humans. His presence attracted Mon Calamari support for the Alliance, thus supplying the Mon Calamari star cruisers that made up a bulk of the Alliance Fleet.

Thanks!

As always, I've glued, puttied over articulation points, and repainted the entire figure.

I decided to change Ackbar's pants to pure white, instead of having the stripes down each leg.  I didn't feel like free-handing stripes, or getting decals printed.  And, I also wanted to slightly changed his uniform from the striped-pants that appear in Return of the Jedi.  It's sort of like, those were his "about to destroy the Death Star or die trying" striped victory-or-death pants.

Here are the King and Queen:  Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa.

Mon Mothma was a human female politician and revolutionary leader who served in the Galactic Senate and Imperial Senate as the representative of Chandrila, the leader of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and the first chancellor of the New Republic. She came to political prominence during the Separatist Crisis and the Clone Wars as a member of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's Loyalist Committee. Along with such allies as Bail Organa of Alderaan and Padmé Amidala of Naboo, Mothma became an outspoken proponent of pursuing peace between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. She also spoke out against the increase in executive wartime power given to Chancellor Palpatine. At the end of the war, as Palpatine continued to amass power and ultimately transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire, Mothma worked with Senator Organa to begin planting the seeds of rebellion against the Imperial regime. Though she remained in the Imperial Senate as a proponent of democracy, these seeds ultimately led to the formation of the Rebel Alliance to militarily combat the might of the Empire.

Bail Prestor Organa (formally styled as His Serene Highness, Prince Bail Organa, First Chairman and Viceroy of Alderaan) was a Human male who served as the First Chairman and Viceroy of Alderaan, and served in the Galactic Senate as the Senator of the Alderaan sector from 32 BBY to 19 BBY. Subsequently, he was Senator of the Alderaan sector of the Imperial Senate from 19 BBY to 1 BBY. He was Princess Leia Organa's adoptive father and a friend of Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Rahm Kota. He was married to Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan and was, as Prince Consort, head of the royal house and ruler of Alderaan. One of the main founders of the Rebel Alliance, he was killed when the Death Star obliterated Alderaan. In the Alliance and its successor states, the New Republic and Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, he was respected as a martyr who died for his cause.

Chess board knight:  Jedi master, survivor of Executive Order 66.

This is the Rahm Kota figure, but I don't know if he's canon anymore.  I've seen talk that Kanan from Star Wars Rebels is modeled off of Rahm Kota, but I don't know.  So, he's either Rahm, or and elderly Kanan with some bionic eyes since at thie point in the show he appears to be blind (I haven't watched the show fully).  Or that'll be my story I give him.

Title: Re: PadawanPainter's Custom Pieces & Chessboard Project
Post by: PadawanPainter on October 22, 2016, 07:37:30 AM
The idea behind these two was duality.

White and light colours  VS  Black and darker colours.

Stonework designed like a sun, with growing sprouting vegetation in the spring  VS  grey rocks like the moon, with dying vegetation in fall/winter.

Young Jedi knight  VS  old  Jedi master.

Like with other pieces, I also specifically wanted to avoid the main characters in the movies as much as possible.  Obviously, this wasn't possible, or desired, when it came to Palpatine or Vader, since they are at the pinnacle of the Imperial power structure.  But, it was possible with the Rebel queen and king, since they are minor characters in the movie, but major players in terms of political power and influence for the Rebellion.

That being said, for the Jedi master (Rahm Kota and/or Kanan), the duality aspect also gave me the added feeling and connection to how Luke Skywalker began dressing once reaching Knighthood after Yoda dies and his lightsaber construction in the Tatooine cave (ie - black/dark clothes).

Also, another connection I forgot to mention was the Imperial rooks and knights to the Rebel rooks.  My decisions for those pieces' characters stemmed from choosing first the Rebel Fleet Trooper as the basis for the Rebel Rook.  I then took artistic license in creating a Rebel High Command Trooper with the green/khaki colour.  Then, I decided to use ROTJ's Death Star Trooper for Junior-grade Imperial Officer uniforms in Navy-black and Army-brown, just so I could match the Rebel rook helmets with an Imperial helmet that was visually similar (ie big and goofy).  After that, it was easy to decide to have Field-grade Imperial Officers with Army-green and Navy-grey uniforms as Knights, replacing the Jedi Order, while the Rebel side still has Jedi Knights as chess knights.

Well, I haven't post on these forums in a long time!  Got busy with life.  Anyway, along with posting on my Instagram, and possibly allowing my wife to start selling off pieces to make room on my shelf, I'm going to try posting here again.

This is one I finished probably a month ago?  Anyway, sometimes I create a backstory for pieces.  This is what I came up with:

"Galactic Marine of the 21st Nova Corps, several months Order 66. This particular Marine previously received airborne training at Republic military facilities on Corulag. He has upgraded his helmet with advanced optics and comms for scouting operations."

Thanks gentlemen!

So, I with a could take nice professional looking pictures of the board, but the thing is literally the size of a coffee table, so this is the best I can do for now.  I need to go back and hit some of the pieces with a matt varnish, as they're still shiny for my taste.  Just haven't done it because that matte varnish always alters the boldness of the colors.  And I can't remember how to get a matte effect without affecting the color boldness.  Maybe manual brush on instead of airbrushing.  I just airbrushed matte varnish on my MAC-V SOG inspired clone, and to me he looks all faded.

Post by: Starchaser on April 16, 2020, 09:15:22 PM
I agree with JDeck - the camo on this guy is great! I don't think the vibrance of the color is a problem with the matte finish - it feels a bit more realistic to me. You have a better perspective, both on what you want to achieve and on the actual color (doesn't always translate perfectly in pictures). I really appreciate seeing the whole chessboard set up, that looks most amazing!

Thanks everyone!  Yes, I've probably played a handful of games.  But after putting so much time thought and energy into it, I started using my little wooden foldout table if I ever wanted to play!  Mainly just display it every so often.  I'm working on cutting some foam with a hot wire to put the pieces in a plastic bin when not on display.  Didn't know foam cutting was as complicated as it is.

I supposed I will just leave the camo alone.  I think I also need better lighting.  Instead of single light source at night, I'll take some new pics in the daylight, with multiple light sources.

I've got like 10 more projects I'm working on, but I want to share my late-Clone Wars diorama that includes, I think 2 MicroMachine scale ATAPs, 1 AAT, and the concept ATAT that came with the Action Fleet Hoth ATAT.  It's my early-Empire diorama pretty much showing early prototype walkers on an assault, moving past an old Separatist AAT that they just knocked out.  I'll grab some pics later.

Upload a picture of pre-painted diorama.

Are you trying to use the attachment system or a bbc embed code? Pictures seem to be working fine both ways for me. We can get this figured out.

So, I just did a screen clip of the error message.  And, as you can see, it let me upload it.  But I can't upload these two pictures of my WIP walker assault diorama.  So weird!  I'm going to screen capture the diorama photo and see about uploading that.

Here is a diorama, in the beginning idea/concept phase.  It's inspired by a scene in Enemy At The Gates, and a historical statue in Volograd/Stalingrad.

It shows an Imperial officer and his unit, invading a city during winter, and he's looking up at an old statue of a clonetrooper.

Here is my walker assault diorama WIP.  It depicts an early-Empire walker assault group moving past an old CIS AAT they just knocked out.  I'll probably add smoke plumes from the two main hatches on the AAT.

I am sure glad to see you posting images again. Crazy. Looks great though on both projects.

I like that Walker mini-dio - really cool with the spires. I think smoke plumes would be an excellent addition. The idea for the trooper diorama (a la Stalingrad) is really cool. I think that's going to be an excellent finished product.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the 3-3/4" dio mate and the small Walker dio is awesome, I love everything about it.

So, with this year, I've forgotten to update this.  I am going to try my hardest to post pictures of all these projects I've finished, but just haven't found the time to take the pictures or upload.

ARC trooper inspired by the Rohirrim from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.  Rohan's colors, at least in the movie, were green and gold.  Combined with their ancestral lands, roving hills with golden grass and rocky outcroppings.

Went back to my Instagram post where I first uploaded and found the backstory I created for him:

ARF Clone Commander Theo, 19th Light Mechanized Battalion, 54th Mustang Corps, planet Nahor, system Mearas. Commander Theo dismounted his AT-RT to scout the high ground overlooking the rolling hills ahead. Nahor was a planet strategically located on a hyperlane route running from the neighboring Corellia system to the Deep Core. Rumors of a secret Separatist stay-behind army brought Commander Theo's unit to the lightly inhabited planet. Republic intelligence was receiving increased chatter about similar caches of weapons and supplies being hidden on other planets outside the Core, possibly for use in future Separatist campaigns targeting Core worlds.

I’m liking it, this reminds me so much of the little dioramas I used to create but with more aggressive landscape. Good stuff

Your Rohirrim ARC Trooper vignette looks phenomenal.
The combination of LOTR and Star Wars works great.
Are you still working on the Star Wars Stalingrad dio?

Couldn't you just see this guy as Eomer leading a squd of AT-RTs onto the plains to slay some evil orks (insert appropriate evil enemy here).

LOTR has to be my second favorite after Star Wars.

That is an amazing figure - I love the Rohirrim concept (and allusions). I really like this one.

Yes, I am!  Hahah! I honestly haven't made much progress on it.  I haven't been at the bench nearly as much as other people seem to have been this year.  And so, when I did paint and construct, I decided to focus on those single figure pieces I started back in late March.

Honestly, it's really a discipline and motivation question.  This year was rough; a combination of escaping/transitioning from miserable Army servitude to the wonderful free life of a regular citizen with a nice regular job, AND the sci-fi dystopia the entire world is in.  And so, much of my nightly escapism veered towards PC games instead of painting.  It was really fun playing 'Star Wars: Empire At War - Awakening of the Rebellion mod', and machine-gun action in WWII-era FPS 'Hell Let Loose'.

Exactly!  Elite AT-RT element scouting out Rohan's rolling hills.  I think Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are the only complete Blu-ray sets I ever bought.

Walker Assault 1/3

I might come back later and touch up some things like making the blacked out siding more smooth and flat, but I'm done with this thing for now.

Early empire walker assault, maybe on Geonosis or a moon near Geonosis (if there is one?).  AT-AT moves past a knocked out AAT, along with it's AT-DP anti-infantry security.

Also, I don't remember if I've shared these before, but here's two other WIPs: Viking and Samurai Jedi.
