R&D - possible projects
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:36:56 PM »
I'm starting this thread because I've got a few ... "oddball" projects in mind that aren't easily fitted into any of the other categories.  Heck, some of them, I'm not even sure they are reasonable to pursue, so this'll be something along the lines of "proof-of-concept" and "test marketing" rolled into one.

Now, for the first project...

I have a project I've started that shows some promise.  I'm building a pen/pencil holder out of resin blocks I've cast from my Hirst Arts molds, building it to resemble a hexagonal castle tower.  My oldest daughter has contributed some additional design elements that may one day evolve into a full-blown desk-set.  So today, it crossed my mind - can I do something similar for sci-fi guys?  Maybe.

The attached pic shows a cast I purchased from Nal's Workshop, I believe called the "Med-lab Pillar."  This item was built using, again, Hirst Arts molds.  It stands about 3" high, so this design isn't what you'd call an imposing element for action figures.  I've been toying with the idea of making a larger version of it specifically to work as action figure terrain.  So - why not make it a pen/pencil "can" as part of a sci-fi desk-set?

What do you guys think?  Is a desk-set something that folks still use?  (Heck, if I add a piece to serve as a lid or cap, it would even work well as scenery!)

I think this is spectacular looking, even at just 3". You could cast them in pairs and glue them one on top of the other with the top one upside down to make a symmetrical pillar (i.e. wide at both ends and narrow in the middle) and they'll look excellent in any sci-fi setting! :)

Y'know, I didn't even think about putting two of them together like that...  Kinda like ultra-tech columns created from mechanical stalagtites and stalagmites growing together...

Doc, I love the look of that piece! The pen/pencil holder is a great idea! And as the Spectre said gluing 2 together would look awesome! Very interested in this project...

I *think* I have two of those pillars... if so, I can see I'll be doing some photo-shooting in and around resin-casting and book-editing today.

All while trying to avoid hacking up a lung.  ewwwwww

Captain Neyo was kind enough to model the columns for me this evening.  First, I have the two columns in their intended orientation, flat on the ground:

And here I've inverted one atop the other:

Pretty dang spiffy!  It's obvious there's a join line where the two connect, but I can do a bit of redesign and get rid of that.  As-is, it makes a great piece for action figures, but it's a bit tall and narrow for a pen-holder.  Interesting...

Thoughts, anyone?

Here's a possible side-arrangement I came up with a few minutes ago...

Wait til you see the door-frame I'm working on, also from Hirst Arts molds.  And for dioramas, OMG the Hirst blocks are hard to beat!!

I think alot of ppl would get introuble for not getting there work done if you make a desk set/ playset pieces....but sure would be fun to play with
