Clone Wars Y-Wing bomber
« on: September 06, 2009, 08:13:53 PM »
Picked this up at a Wal-mart for $64.88

At last, this is the new ship that I have been waiting for ever since Tamer Posted Pics from the Clone Wars visual guide long months ago.

Coming out of the package, you have the major part of the ships fuelsaulage, The two main engine nacelles, two missile launchers,6 missiles, and two bombs. With the instructions you also get a decent number of decals although only one is of interior controls and the rest are plain white looking decals of various shapes with fine black detail lines on them that are barely visible when applied. No republic markings or crumbbomber markings or anything.
Also, there was a new catalog included which had a 10% off coupon from a hasbrotoyshop.com purchase.

The assembly is easy and straight forward and the ships features are as follows. Three retractable landing gear that are more sturdy than the last y-wing and are operated manually, two missile launchers under the nose that are operated by two small buttons on either side of the main cockpit, two bomb bays with bombs that are dropped by pressing one of two small buttons on either side of the astromech hole, two swing up weapons platforms that recess into the top of the ships body and spring open at the touch of a button revealing the two detachable missile launchers that launch two missiles apiece, Opening main canopy with semi sparce interior detail and a dual hand yoke control, an opening tail gunner canopy with room for a gunner fig and guns that dont have much posability,a correctly scaled astromech socket that has the outer hinged ring that snaps into place over and around the astromech," an innovation that was first used on the delta series jsf",and, of course, the removable engine nacelles.
Fully assembled, this ship is pretty large and is longer than 2 feet long.
The price of these new ships has gotten high but so has the detail. The scale and appearance on this one are spot on and if the price doesnt matter, you just gotta get it.

As for the backdrop cardboard diorama insert that is included with this ship. It's not big enough to properly pose the ship. No surprise there. If they were to correctly promote this feature with this ship, they could have included a bigger backdrop and some kind of stand so that you could pose the ship in flight mode.

Nice review Clint. Man, this looks good. Kinda bummed about the decals and the poor background dio. Why make one if it won't fit the ship size?

My guess is it is just a backdrop for a head on shot... only real way it will fit..
Another really great review... I really want this one.... but not $65 worth of really wanting.
It is a great looking ship and has lots of nice features.... but no pilot.... for that much money?
Are they that out of touch? Or just that greedy?
Oh...... Nevermind.... I am talking about Lucas here.

I failed to mention that I used 1 piece of clone cash and got the walmart 10% discount on this one. That saved me about 11.50 but $54 is still kinda high. Heck even an included astromech would have helped.

The darn ship is so long, if you went for the nose forward stance with the backdrop, the bottom would only catch a 1/4 or less of the back of the ship. It might work ok for a jsf, though.

Thanks guys, this one is a killer ship, for sure. I like it better than my $100 turbo tank.

I think this is one, kinda like the Turbo Tank, that I will only get if the price is really good. Kinda like the ATTE deal we saw toysrus run a few months ago. It is a good looking ship, thats for sure and I do like big ole ships. I think the whole diorama backdrop is overrated from what I have seen. It seems most of the ships the backdrops are included for just don't fit em once built. For these to work they should have increased the size of the box a wee bit. Ofcourse we knew that wouldn't happen.

Clint, you're KILLING me!  I was resisting this thing due to the price tag, but looking at it now, I'm having a real hard time...give me your bottom line: worth the cost?

You gotta have this one, Pat! If there is one new ship or vehicle that you are on the fence about forget about them and get this one. Imagine how cool a hanger scene would look with this, a couple of jedi star fighters, and a few pilots/droids would look. I had said in the past that Hasbro had raised the bar with there newer vehicles and this one is no exception. yes, to me, it is worth the cost and will hold a front row position in my display area, once I get said area together. Of the new vehicle releases, this one would be my most favorite with the vulture droid/ magna gaurd fighter coming in tied for second.

Heads up, I am to review the two walmart cw two packs tonight.
stay tuned.
