The Jarell
« on: January 13, 2010, 12:03:30 PM »
INFO: Jarells were a humanoid species native to the planet Oon Tien in the Kathol sector. They developed a primitive society on their homeworld, organized into matriarchal city-states, before contact with colony ships from the Galactic Republic approximately three centuries prior to the Galactic Civil War. Jarells were a historically violent species; the various monarchies that ruled Jarell society forced their own young into periods of indentured servitude in exchange for weapons and technology. Since their discovery by the Republic, Jarells migrated to several other planets in the Kathol sector, and were often found serving private citizens, corporations, and criminal organizations as hired muscle.

RACE: Jarell
HEIGHT: 2.5 Meters Tall
SKIN: White, purple and blue
DISTINCTION: Cranial ridges, tentacled mouthparts

HOMEWORLD:
Oon Tien was a planet in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories, and the homeworld of the Jarell species. Discovered by Galactic Republic colonists roughly 300 years before the Galactic Civil War, the planet was settled by Humans. The native Jarell monarchies traded with the new Human settlers, acquiring weapons and high technology that fueled a change in Jarell society. In the decades preceding the Galactic Civil War, Oon Tien was integrated into the Kathol sector, and became a major manufacturing and agricultural hub. With Oon Tien falling under Imperial rule, Moff Kentor Sarne—governor of the sector—established stardocks in orbit of the planet, resulting in Oon Tien becoming the center of his fleet's construction and maintenance operations. Following the fall of Kal'Shebbol to the New Republic in 8 ABY, Governor Manon Flint was ordered to hold the docks at all costs from New Republic aggression. The planet would prove problematic to the New Republic as it sought to expand its influence throughout the sector.

Oon Tien was located off the Trition Trade Route in Kathol sector, and was connected by hyperspace travel routes to the planets Torize, Kolatill, and Corjain. A wet and mountainous planet, Oon Tien was the homeworld of the Jarell species. As the world was integrated into the economy of the sector, it became a major agricultural and manufacturing center. After coming under Imperial rule, the planet was home to the largest shipyard in the sector as Moff Kentor Sarne—ruler of the Kathol sector—had three stardocks established in orbit. As the planet was a major maintenance hub for his fleet, Sarne protected the Oon Tien system with at least two dozen IPV-1 System Patrol Craft, a full wing of TIE Fighters, and hundreds of proton mines.

The native Jarells established a primitive society on the planet based around feudal monarchic city-states, and had developed basic metalworking skills when Galactic Republic colony ships discovered the system around 292 BBY. Human colonists settled on the planet, building several communities and existing side-by-side with the native Jarell city-states. The Jarell monarchs began trading precious gemstones and periods of indentured servitude of their young for weapons and high technology from the Human settlers. The traded equipment assisted the Jarells in a series of internal revolutions that changed Jarell society, although the conflicts never threatened the Human settlements.

For several decades before the Battle of Yavin, Oon Tien became more integrated into the Kathol sector, with several large manufacturing complexes being established on the planet. The world also developed an extensive agricultural industry.

When Oon Tien came under the control of the Galactic Empire, Moff Kentor Sarne appointed Governor Manon Flint to command the system. Sarne established three orbiting stardocks in the system, each capable of servicing and repairing capital ships up to 300 meters long. The docks were the main maintenance facilities for Sarne's forces, and were the largest shipyards in the sector.

Following the fall of the sector capital Kal'Shebbol to New Republic forces in 8 ABY, Sarne was forced to retreat into the Kathol sector.[4] Sarne ordered Governor Flint to hold the docks at all costs, or destroy them if the New Republic managed to invade the system. As the New Republic spread its influence throughout the sector, Oon Tien would prove to be one of the most troublesome planets as it was too heavily defended by Imperial loyalists to fall easily or quickly.

Locations
Oon Tien was home to several settlements of both Jarell and Human origin. The most notable installations on the planet were actually in orbit—the three stardocks that were the hub of the Empire's fleet construction and maintenance programs in the sector. Due to the presence of industrial and agricultural based corporations, Oon Tien had extensive manufacturing and farming complexes on the surface.

BIOLOGY AND APPEARANCE:
Jarells were large humanoids with great strength. They had mottled skin, which was predominantly purple and white, but included blue patches on the arms and forehead. Cranial ridges were present on their heads, starting at the brow and running over the scalp to the back of their heads. Instead of a mouth, Jarells possessed multi-tentacled mouthparts. Several small bony growths sprouted on their elbows, and their fingers terminated in sharp claws.

CULTURE AND HISTORY:
Jarells were ruled by monarchies, divided into various city-states across their homeworld of Oon Tien. A historically violent species, Jarells were considered to be dim-witted by other beings. However, Jarells were actually a creative and perceptive species, with excellent memories and a tradition of oral storytelling. They spoke Jarellian, a language that had several different dialects, but no written form.

Following contact with the outside galaxy, many of the planet's monarchies made arrangements for young Jarells to serve periods of indentured servitude to corporations, private citizens, criminal organizations, and even Imperial governors as hired muscle and general servants. The length of service was usually between seven and eleven years, and while it was essentially slavery, young Jarells were socialized to accept this as a natural period of their lives. They saw it as a period of maturation, symbolizing their transition from child to adult. While few Jarells actually ever profited from the arrangement, they hoped that their servitude would introduce them to beings who could make them powerful, or help them acquire wealth. As a result, young Jarells on the cusp of their service looked forward to the time with excitement and purpose. While generally loyal to their employers, some Jarells were willing to undermine them if it would benefit them to do so.

Jarells originated on the planet Oon Tien in the Kathol sector. The species lived in monarchic city-states and had a knowledge of basic metal-working when they were first contacted by colony ships from the Galactic Republic approximately three hundred years before the Galactic Civil War.

Although technologically primitive, the Jarell monarchies began trading gemstones and periods of indentured servitude from their young in exchange for weapons and other high-technology items. The weapons were used by the monarchies in a series of armed conflicts and revolutions that changed Jarell society, although the fighting never spread to any of the Human settlements on the planet.

Following contact with the Republic, Oon Tien became a vital part of the Kathol sector, with manufacturing and agriculture being important parts of its industry. Jarells settled on other worlds in the Kathol sector, including Kolatill, Pembric II, and Corjain.

IN THE GALAXY:
Jarells were found in the Kathol sector, usually engaged in their period of indentured servitude to whomever had contracted their services. These jobs took advantage of the Jarells' strength and historically violent nature.
