Title: XTS_Operative Battle Diorama Update!!!! 10/21/2013
Post by: XTS_Operative on May 26, 2012, 09:45:35 PM
Here is my Jabba dio that I referred to in my first post, she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. Since first coming to ISY, I've made a lot of special modifications myself. I built this back in September as my first project. Jumped right in with both feet and really didn't know what I was getting into. Most of these pictures are new...

I am currently working on a dio based on my own personal fan fiction. I'll start posting some pics once I have something I'm not ashamed to show. I never expected it, but diorama building is turning out to be a full-blown interest for me, and I think I love it. Thanks for looking.

Scott

Thanks so much for looking & the front page! Clonesniper that's cool that you noticed Dengar. I like that relaxed pose so much. I think it looks natural. It's difficult to make the characters seem alive. Maybe if I delve more into custom figures I will be able to bring a much greater aspect of reality.

Amazing!  Great pics and imagination in these vignettes you've created!  Respect for going with the power-trio version of the Rebo band! I held off on watching the SE of  ROTJ until maybe last year and nearly choked on my cornflakes. Jedi Rocks?!  Especially good to see that you went with the vintage Sy Snootles figure! Keep up the fine, fine work!

Thanks for the compliments guys! Yeah, I like the vintage Sy Snootles too. Not to start any arguments on the merits/negatives of the SE, but I really miss the original Rebo Band. Thanks for noticing.

Here is a small sneak peek at the dio I am currently working on. I couldn't help myself...I wanted to wait until it was complete, but I thought the pictures turned out so great I guess it won't hurt to share...

The story behind this fan-fiction diorama was inspired by a Star Wars role-playing game that some friends and I have been playing for several years now. Aside from Star Wars I am also a huge fan of the Fifth Element, and I hope you will be able to see the spirit of that film in my diorama.

This is Ortho's shop. Ortho is one of the trillions of inhabitants living in the lower bowels of the city-planet Coruscant. I really like the idea of portraying every day life in the Star Wars universe and I think it is going to be a major theme in all of my dioramas in the future. These are some pictures of his subterranean garage. These pictures are taken with my test lighting. It won't be fully lit until the entire diorama is complete. In future updates I will give a full length story, and pictures of the complete diorama (with fully furnished upstairs), and pictures of my custom Ortho working in his shop.

Thanks for the great praise guys. Means a lot. I like producing things that people enjoy just as much as I enjoy looking at the products of others. Though I must admit, I can't wait until this sucker is done. I know my wife can’t wait for me to get it off her kitchen counter... ;D

@Lukesprywalker This dio is just your typical foamcore construction. I bought a 2 x 2 x 1/4" piece of plywood to make the base, cut the base down a few inches on one side so it would fit on the shelf, then essentially just created a large box made out of foamcore. I figured I could then “build-in” with architectural details from outside inward. I use both a hot glue gun and spray adhesive (made for styrene). Charcoal auto primer was used to paint the ceiling structure. Common household gloss spray-paint was used for the color of the walls. I used chalk pastels to smudge the walls to give them that dingy look. McDonalds straws and the inserts from aluminum foil rolls were used to create the overhead ducts and pipes. The flooring was made from plastic gridding bought from Michaels (I guess it is used for knitting?? I really have no idea) which was first painted with auto primer  then finished with a coat of silver lacquer (the kind that does not need a clear coat). The lighting does two things for me: it sets mood and it hides a few of my minor little mistakes. I am going to devise a parallel circuit of 10mm and 5mm LED lights. I am expecting approximately 27 LEDs when everything is said and done. The steel gantry looking thing hanging from left to right across the garage was made from 3/8" wooden dowels and toothpicks, then painted silver, then that grungy turquoise color. After painting I scratched away some of the top layer of paint to make it appear worn with use (like exposed metal ya know?). The Black Sun banner hanging in the back was cut out from old clothing and the symbol was drawn with a permanent marker.

Most of my "education" on how to build a foamcore structure I have gleaned from tutorials by Frank Diorio, the fine folks on Imperial Shipyards, and the diorama forum on rebelscum. My theory to design an original work that seems coherent with the Star Wars universe is to use an amalgam of different details characteristic of the movie sets. The pipes in the ceiling were inspired by Frank Diorio’s Millenium Falcon Interior, the lights inset into the walls came from the Death Star, the huge garage door emulates a version of a blast door also seen on the Death Star. The upstairs areas will use more details pulled from both the prequel and original trilogy. Hopefully when all is said and done this will be a convincing location from the underworld of Coruscant.

I have several sheets of that plastic canvas, too.  I've sprayed one khaki and one black, as well as the white, so that I can have industrial-style backdrops for my photos.  I'm going to try making a catwalk from it in the near future, too.

Hey fellas. I've finally finished my latest diorama project. Here are my photos and a brief description of my fan fiction. Hope you enjoy...

Ortho Thax Solari, better known locally as "the Scumbag Ortho," is one of the innumerable inhabitants of Coruscant's seedy underworld. His mechanic/droid shop named "Ortho's Repair" is located in the underground Workman's District of the region known as Ord City, situated approximately 60 km west of Imperial Center. Ord City, once named in honor of the Mantellian Savrip's homeworld Ord Mantell, is centered in one of several planet-wide "alien freezones" (large circular segregation locales for indigent alien species). In the once Grand Plaza of Ord City near Crown Estates tenement housing, a public turbolift gives access to the Workman's district and Ortho's below ground.

A vagrant lies in the public corridor.

Ortho regularly "donates" generous bribes to local law enforcement to ignore his nefarious activities, in return they keep his public corridor well lit.

In many sections of the most destitute areas of Coruscant, poor creatures are beleagured by war propaganda at every turn.

His mechanical knack allows him to repair anything that is brought into his shop, from blasters, to droids, to airspeeders, to bacta tanks.

For those who force entry beyond the shield door one of Ortho's toys awaits them (large blaster hanging from ceiling)

Ortho's shop is also his home (this is his bed behind the curtain).

The "Scumbag" moonlights as the manager of a chop-shop for the criminal organization Black Sun. Occasionally middle-ranking members will hold meetings in Ortho's garage. It is typically re-purposed droids that slave away in his garage, since trustworthy employees, in an organization of criminals, are hard to come by.

Ortho's Shop after hours. The large blast door leads into a large subterranean passage for airspeeders and small space-faring vessels. It eventually leads to the surface of Coruscant.

I've now starting working on a much smaller dio of Jabba's Dias. Hopefully this one will be an improvement over my first two dioramas. Instead of doing a full scale version of Jabba's palace, I am just doing the large arch and area surrounding his dias. Unlike the first jabba dio, this version will be made almost entirely of foamcore. I'm already extremely happy with the way I'm flying through this build. Just like the others it will be lighted. Once its finished I intend to giveaway in a trivia contest at a Star Wars collectors club meeting in November.

Since I'm giving this one away I'm trying to make it more presentable by making screw mounts for the lights.

Thanks guys!

Hey Ron, you do a lot of Tatooine themed dios, what do you recommend that I use to give it that stone look? Is there a specific type plaster that you use? On my first Jabba dio I just bought a tub of DAP (that kind used for hiding tapelines) and brushed it on. It tends to chip and flake though. Do you have any ideas on something that will stand up better to the test of time?

I appreciate the input from you guys.

I'm about to try some spray-on sealant as a test to prevent that very chipping problem.  Keep an eye on my dio thread - "Boryla Sector on display" - for details.

How thick did you make the steps?  I'm toying with the need for some solid stairs and am trying with proper sizing.

Hey mate,

I mainly use just normal plaster of paris with some PVA/Woodglue and to get that stoney affect I add fine river sand.

For example if I have 5 cups of plaster I add 1/4 cup of PVA/Woodglue and then 3 cups of fine river sand.  I then pour the water until the mix is like a pancake type consistency. Then start adding the mix to the walls floors etc, the only problem with adding PVA/woodglue is that the plaster tends to dry a little faster then usual.

Thanks guys! And thank you Tamer for the front page!

@docoutlands Will do, I'll be watching your posts. The steps are 1/2" tall. I eyeballed how tall steps are to my shins, and 1/2" seemed appropriate for the 3 1/4" figure. Besides, the platform I am trying to reach is 2 1/2" so it divides by five steps perfectly.

@hemble thanks for the tip. I definately need to branch out more with different techniques.

Wow... that first Jabbas dio is awesome, love the details and all the small little areas and all the light up spots. Then I saw the 2 story one and that blew me away, the hangar, then the stairs to the droid room, love the desk with all the paperwork, kinda like my desk here in the office, lol.  I love the outside hallway too, all the light up details really make it pop.

I can't wait to see the progress of this Jabba dio. My son's getting a little older and one thing I've been wanting to do is make him a Cantina or Jabba's palace like this, so I'll def be keeping an eye out and steal... I mean, borrowing some of your ideas. Also thanks to Hemble for those tips on the plaster. I've made some smaller dios in the past and coated them with future floor wax to try to help protect them, but it was hard to get rid of the glossiness afterwards, had to add more paint, lol.. but I'll try that glue in the plaster method on my next one.

Amazing! You have so many great features! The light up tables make some great "moody" photos. This looks really fun to play with. I also like how you have a gun trading deal going down. I'm also glad you have a picture of the dio from the outside. That gives us another view so we can see how big this actually is. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much to Hangarbay 94, Joerhyno, and  jaq renaldi. I'm glad you enjoy my work. There was an avalanche of detail ideas for Ortho's Repair shop. I started with what I thought was a simple concept, but as I continued to build it grew legs. Before the end it turned into a beast of a project! 0// Glad you saw the gun deal. That was a really fun idea. You know Jabba's a thug, so you got to flesh out his dio with some well placed criminal activities. Thanks again!

Here is an update with my latest Jabba Dio. I'm really happy with this one so far. Just under two weeks of construction. This one started to grow legs, but then it got plastered and couldn't walk anymore... Ba dum dum. ;D

Almost done!

Yep, sure was.  I REALLY wanted to make it to the custom panel(s), but this was our first celebration so my wife and I were both overstimulated with jaw dropping awe (and she is not even a Star Wars fan). There was just too much to do with so little time...I don't think I saw you at C6, I know I saw Frank Diorio (what an apt last name) hanging around the sail barge. Maybe see you at the next one!

Thanks so much guys! And thanks for the recognition on the front page Tamer!!!!

Now I need your guys opinion...

Initially, I built this diorama to be given away as a prize for a trivia/scavenger hunt in my home (I am hosting the Kentucky Star Wars Collectors Club meeting in November) as a way to say thanks to the club for the award that I won for my Coruscant diorama…I now feel guilty for even saying this but part of me wants to keep it. ? I haven’t committed, or even mentioned that I intend to give this away. It’s completely of my own volition.

I guess my only reservation is that I want the person who wins it (if people would even be interested) to want it for the sake of wanting it, not because they intend to re-sell it on Ebay. I guess theoretically if someone sold it on Ebay it would eventually end up in the hands of someone who wanted it anyway, but I think there is still that level of disconnect. Think of it as giving up your baby for adoption…this is one of my babies. That’s why I thought a trivia/scavenger hunt game would be appropriate, rather than a raffle drawing. That way I know the probability of it landing in someone’s hands who really wants it, is good, whereas anybody can pony up a dollar for a raffle ticket. I wouldn’t be so vexed about this, if I didn’t have 2 ½ weeks of work, and approximately $90 in materials invested (don’t worry, those materials can still be used on many other projects, so it’s not like this thing really cost $90, but still…). Not to be dramatic, but I’ve even considered that this might even be considered heirloom quality, but I don’t have kids so who am I going to give it to?

So my questions are:

Do you think people would be interested in winning this? (the target audience will be a bunch of Star Wars, toy loving geeks like myself).

Should I even give it away in the first place?

Give it to a close friend who I know will appreciate it?

Comments or ideas?

THANK YOU!!!!

Mate the dio came out great, the textures are perfect and the way you have it lit up just looks amazing well done.

As for your question/s

It is always a hard thing to give away one of your customs be it a figure or a dio because of all the work that has gone into it. But I can honestly vouch that if you give this away to a person that is at the trivia/scavenger hunt that they will really appreciate it.

I have done a few indy comps over the years and given away my customs and dios as prizes and have never worried about them getting broken or destroyed as the people that win them you will know that they will look after them just like you have.

And by the off chance that they sell an item of your on ebay and someone buys it least then again you'll know it will go to someone that wants it.

All joking aside, I think you are getting some great advice from the folks here and there really isn't anything I can add. I think anyone who would sell this on ebay sure doesn't need to have it anyway and the ebay person who bid on it would cherish it like it should be.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the great advice on the Diorama giveaway/scavenger hunt. It went off without a hitch! A member of the collectors club is now proudly displaying the Jabba diorama on his wall. I'm glad that it worked out.

And giving seems to reap its own rewards. Members of the club have now begun showering me with random gifts, such as old tie fighter vehicles, X-wings, interesting bits of junk, and now THIS!

I thought this gun was SO COOL! The nice dude who gave it to me has encouraged me to make a diorama from it. I'm not exactly sure what I am going to do with it yet, but I love it. He suggested making it part of a hangar bay display. I'm thinking something more along the lines of a ship mounted turbolaser battery. Not sure yet, but I want to make it interesting.

Glad everything went well and giving your work is an awesome thing, very gratifying. On to this gun, My son has it in his collection of 12" Joes. It is an awesome piece and I hoped to get my hands on my son's when he was done with it. No such luck he put it back in the box and archived it as well as the rest of his 12" Joes. I would love to see this thing modded with a gunner seat on the side and sticking out of bulkhead of some type. As you said off the side of a huge vehicle type setting. Such a great piece to work with!

Artillery!!!  That rascal looks totally RIGHT used with the 3.75" figs!  I can see some of the stuff I'd do to it, right off the bat - get rid of the rods/props that stick out and, as Master Sprywalker says, mod on a gunner's seat (on the right side, of course).  Look at the big emplacements on Battlefront II and give it a gunshield like those pieces have (Mygeeto and Kashyyyk maps are the ones I'm thinking of here).  Remove the ammo-chutes on top and replace them with a scratchbuilt semi-rounded piece similar to the autocannon drums used on Warhammer 40k vehicles, but BIG.

Ah, but that's what *I* would do - *you* should go forth and make it awesome in your own style!

(Spry, I can see it on a trailer-mount behind something like the cab of your crazy-cool cargo crawler, like an old M-16 quad-.50's anti-aircraft halftrack...)

That's a 'big ass' cannon, that would look good in a Kashyyk setting with trando's, wookies and delta squad planting charges on it.

Great acquisition

Hi Fellas,

I can't believe its been since December that I have thought about any new diorama work. I was having writers block in another area of my creative outlets, and I just suddenly got the itch to start a diorama I've been planning to do for a couple of years now. Here are the pics of the work in progress. Doesn't look like much yet, but I imagine you can see where I'm going with this.

Before contouring...

My Golans...

They'll get a little better when I have time to work on them. I used toy parts from a $1.00 bubble blowing kit I bought from Krogers. The lid of the bubble mix is the entry hatch. The gun barrel is also from the kit. The rest of the Golan is made from leftover polystyrene from a previous dio, and the body is a pair of cheap cups I found on clearance at wal-mart (I think they were New England Patriots cups made in hopes of winning Super Bowl XLVI).

Just the foam-core base before plastering. Any ideas on a relatively cheap method for contouring used in model railroading?

That would be a Tama set.  8). Those belong to my drummer. Aside from a workroom for my dios, a place for my car to sleep, and a gym, my garage is also our bandroom.

Thanks for the recognition on the front page Tamer  I hope this looks really cool when its done.

Ah yea! I love to see a new Hoth diorama coming together! Way to think outside the box and create from scratch the piece that you need. Any new work on this?

Thanks for looking Spry! I still lurk around here on ISY and admire everyone's work, but I haven't done too much work on the battle dio. But here is what I have so far. Like in that Beatles song, "Life is what happens while you are making other plans." Hopefully I'll knock the rest out pretty soon. I did my first coat of plaster cloth, and intend to do a little more plastering in weak areas (or that just don't look right). I've posed the figures just so I can get an idea of what it will look like when all is said and done.

I'm actually going to try to do an alien world that has not been seen before. Before all is said and done, I will paint the plaster and create ground cover. I am going to do a painting in the top of the closet to provide background (the part that will probably take the most work). The story is Vader and his forces have invaded this world to combat lingering mercenaries allied with rebel forces. The mercenary troops wear vintage clone trooper armor (because it was all they could get their hands on). Anyway, its far from done. I will also flesh out the story a lot more once the work is done. Here are my current pics:

I like the AT-AT driver figures and the commander a lot, so I wanted to make sure to include them in the action.

This T-47 was given to me by a KSWCC member. It was all beat up and missing parts, so I took some extra gun parts from a B-Wing and mounted them where the original guns were missing. There won't be a canopy, since I will simulating an explosion in that area. The visible wires will light the LEDs.

I dremeled the bottom out so I could fit the battery holder. The T-47 will be in the process of "crashing." >:D

Here is my completed Battle Diorama. This is a Star Wars/Wheel of Time Crossover diorama. It's set during the period of the Galactic Empire. The mercanaries are my Star Wars version of the "Band of the Red Hand," who are fighting alongside the rebels. Here is a video about my latest diorama and my diorama closet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulxook97Cz8

This is the band of the red hand. I thought it would be cool if the mercanaries wore "vintage" armor. Cad Bane is playing the role of Matrim Cauthon, who in the story wears a wide brimmed hat, a scarf to cover his wounds, and carries an ashandari (which I guess is kind of like a staff with a large blade on one end). The ashandari here is a vibroblade.

That diorama is exquisite, the imagination and attention to details shows in every image.  I particularly love the backdrop, it's rare to see someone taking the time to create one for a dio, especially one of this size.

The action poses look great and it all looks so alive.

Superb.
