Originally, I always wanted a massive Hoth dio where the walkers were coming at me, instead of a side view, like I had before. I find as I populate it, it's too low. I need to raise it on tables. Also, I need to have a trench, command center, wampa cave and an ion cannon.

OMG, I just had a nerdgasm! Barry this scene shows such dedication to our hobby that it is more than that, it is a lifestyle. Superb work and it is really making me want to tackle the Hoth Skiff that is visible on the battle field in a few photos from the film. Half of it is seen in a hanger shot, always wanted to scratch build one.

What did you use for the snow?
A wall mural would put this over the top

Spooky, last time I had this dio (1/6 of this size), I used 16 lbs. of baking soda. This time, I'm trying a more economically cheaper product: flour. I'll have to wait and see what that much exposed flour will do over time.
I think about the mural all of the time, and I agree. I would have to commission someone though.
A couple things I would like to do is raise the whole thing, and bring the smoke trail speeder closer to the action. I don't like the dio so close to the floor. Different elevations would be nice too, as in at least a ridge for the approaching walkers.
Lights on the downed walker to simulate fire and a trench are next on my agenda.

Have you thought about those plastic "wall skins" they sell for a mural background? There are some sites which will do one of whatever photos you want.
Although this truly deserves a hand-painted, super detailed mural, maybe that could be an option.
A masterpiece either way!

That would be awesome, SSS. I would love to have you paint the mural. Regarding the spouse issues, I use a thin cloth when administering chloroform. If you are using a thick cloth, that may be the problem. Thanks so much.

humm, not sure baking soda would be any different....I know you can buy taxidermy "snow" by the bags full but I dont remember how much it was, but I dont think it was all that much.

So incredibly sick. I have been putting off checking this post out...'cause I was afraid I'd wanna quit customizing in despair. I finally gave in and WOW. Just spectacular. I agree with an earlier comment from you about having it raised...kinda like those insane model train dios some folks do. I still think, like you, it should be raised, but I'm thinking about adding another 50 sq. ft. to it, and that may complicate picking up things that fall over. Spookymufu, I'm wanting to create the ridge from the scene. Pretty easy to do, but I'll need more depth to pull off the illusion. Plus, the trench, Rebel base hangar entrance, mountain with ion cannon... Just stuff like that. Thanks for looking.

That is most excellent news.
As for raising it, you might want to consider taking the route model railroaders do and making "trap doors" in it so you can reach sections. Can't wait to see the ion cannon!!

Barry, that looks fantastic! What are you doing to get the red blaster bolts? I could see fishing line stretched between the 2 vehicles. Then add hot glue to the line in several areas then paint the hot glue red.

L.E., I'm using this stuff I found laying in my house called 'puffy' paint. I've applied a thicker later last night, and I'm gonna repaint today with new pix. The puffy paint sorta swells and seems ideal for this.

Barry, another thing to consider from the model railroad bag of tricks is to run the dio/layout around the edges of the room rather than building it as a unitary piece on a 4x8 sheet. Granted, given the rather distinct "2-sides" nature of the battlefield, that might not work out well for Hoth! However, it might be an approach to consider for the revamp of Mos Eisley. I highly recommend Kalmbach's books on model railroad layouts - heck, any of their books, really, as well as their fine magazines Model Railroader and FineScale Modeller - for truly spectacular model-building, scenery-building, and dio/layout construction approaches.

Barry! You are killing me! This is really spectacular! You are nailing every detail! The mountain range looks great, Bob Ross would be proud! It is just enough to bring the entire piec together. I could also see you doing a small amount of work to the stark white field of snow below the mointains to blend the paint with the diorama. Very nice work bra! Forget C6 lets have a ISY meeting in a hotel conference room near Barry's home town!

Thanks so much! I used all purpose flour that I have treated after a few people told me of the potential downside to having 50 lbs of untreated flour exposed to air. I had another, smaller, Hoth dio years ago, and I used 16 lbs of baking soda for that. Baking soda is more expensive, but after 7 years of having it exposed, the only issue was that it will absorb any odors. Didn't clump; worked perfectly.

Barry, this is one helluva diorama, my friend. The sheer size of it and all of the stuff that's going on is very impressive. The snowspeeder buzzing around that AT-AT, the one with the smoke trail, the very incredible huge smoke column of the downed walker... most impressive indeed. Love the placement of Vader, a commander and the snowtroopers. Very nice nod to the old Kenner Scout Walker packaging :) Love the added laser blasts as well, very very clever way of making those!

I'm going to add other explosions, varying in size, and spread out over the whole dio. I'm hoping that the gunner's next shots land in unoccupied areas, lol.

Lol, thanks L.E.! I was hoping that some youtube police didn't bust me on using the word chloroform. I've been a bit reserved so far in these videos... Maybe one day I'll lighten up and be myself, haha.

Thanks so much! A guy named Donald Bastin on Facebook was the first to suggest the flying body effect. The 3 guys flying was one of the hardest things to get right. 6 fishing lines (3 at x length, and the other 3 just about an inch longer) with multiple adjustments.
It would be neat to see body part fly all over the place.

Retooled my trench with much more accurate walk boards. I ripped up an old component style stereo to get the cooling vents, and then cut to size for the walk boards and the ramp leading into the trench.
Also, added cables, generators, another explosion, and extensive reworking of the entire trench.

I've been working a lot on the lighting lately. In this picture, to give you an idea on the depth from this view, the distance between the probe droid and the protocol droid on the left is 24 inches apart, meaning the probot is 2 feet further back away from the camera than the protocol droid.

Mate this is without a doubt one of the most amazing dio's that I have seen in a very very long time. The things I really like about this dio is that there is so much action going on and I've checked it out 3 times alreday and have seen something different each time.
The dio itself is very well laid out you have a great eye very putting items into area's to make it there own little scenes even thou the dio is on a larger scale. The details are also amazing from the snow to the the smoke plumes 10/10.

Not really. Possibly some Action Fleet stuff inside, but mostly I just wanna do the North Entrance to Echo Base. The other interior sections have been done so well by people like Spookymufu, I couldn't dare do that justice.

Here's another ISY exclusive pic. This is a mock up of my original concept of Vader's arrival. He was to be flying down to the surface, accompanied by some jetpack equiped snowtroopers. Imagine the fishing lines not supporting Vader. The shuttle would have only flown around a 1/2 mile above the surface.

I really liked that Vader and Imperial Snowjumptrooper idea too.

Man again and again you show these little snippets that just make my day and always look amazing. The reason I love this dio and teh ongoing work you do to it is that you have a great eye not for just detailing but also where to add something to the dio without taking away from another scene of the dio.
Being a military diorama builder from long long time ago ;D and even now doing SW and Indy dios it's very hard to find someone that has the knack to place items be it a figure/s, equipment, vehicles or even buildings and maintain that visualization of if you are looking at the one scene that is all you see and nothing else.
Alot of dioramist either add to much or to little to a dio and that can really spoil the hard work that has gone into the dio. You on tehother hand have a rare talent and skill for making a dio perfect well done indeed mate and hope to see more.

This is going to become the sole motivation for kids everywhere to move out of their mother's house just so they can have a room to set something, like this, up.
It's not going to be long before one of those reality shows about collecting start knocking on your door..or George Lucas himself with a cease and desist notice.
My wife catches me looking at pics of this dio and just mutters "Don't even think about it."
My hat is off for you, Barry..This diorooma is the gravy on any Star Wars fan's mashed potatoes.

Finally had time to do your thread the justice it deserves and caught up on the last ten pages…
All I can say is this mate, you have done what only a few other customizers have achieved (and I certainly do not count myself as one of these guys.) You have transcended modelling and created a work of art.
Honestly mate – this piece fills me with joy every time I look at a fresh batch of photos! I can’t wait to see what is added next – this project is so organic!

I believe every Star Wars fan, who has loved the kenner toys, and still loves all of the 3 3/4 scale figures and vehicles, has probably dreamed of making a permanent diorama like this in their home (myself included). And most specifically the battle of Hoth. I mean who doesn't love the Imperial Walkers? I have always told myself, maybe one day when I strike it rich, I'll have a whole warehouse dedicated to this kind of stuff. This is beyond cool. Good for you man. ;D

You have given the cable the right amount of tension and slack where it is needed and you have even gone so far as to give the cable a bend as the speeder is turning. Also the thickness of the cable is perfect.

Yesterday was my first day back in there in about 5 months. Another cat had got in there and caused some havoc, lol. I have put up a better defense system for them. :)

Thanks so much, Shawn. I finally picked up a tripod for my camera and downloaded some panorama software, so I hope to have some better pix coming up. I've been wanting to do some kind of shot with a Republic Gunship, although I know it's far from canon. I just love the vehicle. I'd like to put one in just for the photos, but it would require some mods to look as though it had been recovered by the Rebels.
I've been hesitant to start the Echo Base Mountain/miniature interior, as it will have several aspects that I am unfamiliar with doing.

I think that the Hoth scene has to be by far the best scene in the Star Wars Saga and you have captured it in all of it's widescreen glory. This diorama is an epic undertaking and has to be the best Star Wars diorama in existence, you have earned your place as a legend in the customizing community.

Thank you very much, Clint. I made that fire using lineman's pliers to pinch the paint soaked material, and then hollowed out the inside of the material and trimmed with scissors. The explosions were so much easier to make than the fire.
