Title: Mandalore the skepsis-Updated pics of wampa, jedi and some new rehashed customs
Post by: Mandalore the skepsis on February 01, 2010, 07:35:05 PM
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Thon%27s_Jedi_Master (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Thon%27s_Jedi_Master)

In my creation of this custom, I combined a lot of the aspects seen in the character books, both omnibus of the "tales of the jedi", and the internet.

I've been working on him for a while, and honestly I think it came out pretty good.

With Nomi
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/vash34/custom%20star%20wars/masterthonkids070.jpg)

I resculpted his face, and removed horns a plenty off the head.
At one time he was a red triceratops.

The best part of this dino is the fact it growls like a dinosaur, when you move the front left leg.

*Master Farfalla*

This is my take on the comic books style of the fig.

Exar's cape cloak thingie can come forward over his right side as well over his shoulder. He also has shoulder armor over the right shoulder as well. I will take better pics of both of them another time, not really feeling like it right now.

Yes, Welcome indeed!  That Master Thon is awesome!  I've always thought he was a cool concept of a Jedi, and you've captured him well!  I also like your Exar Kun!

Thanks for the welcome and awesome compliments, and holy crap, thanks for the front page plug.
That is truely awesome!!! ;D

Thon has always been one of my fav jedi. One I think hasbro could do as a beast figure or battle pack with a Nomi Sunrider.

Again thanks for all the great compliments, welcomes and the front page.

I've been making customs for about 5 yrs now.

Your Ulic Qel Droma and Exur Kun are better than the ones about to come out by Hasbro. Have you seen the new pics of them? Don't even look like them. You have captured their likeness man. And Thon? Great job on all of them. Cay Qel Droma is terrific too. Now you need the Twilek dude, can't think of his name right off the bat, but him and Sylvar the cat chick. You need the whole main cast now. Keep up the good work brotha!

Thanks again for all the welcomes and the comments.

I really like doing clones and mandos the most for some reason.

Jedi are ok, sith are more fun.

The kotor jedi and characters from both the games and comics are a lot of fun cause they are so different from the norm, and there is a lot of freedom with some of them.

Here's a couple more I've done:

Man, those really rock! How about a recipe for that stunning Cad Bane?

Here's my recipe.

Well the coat is from a dreadknock, with the mullet, from a few years back, the boots I made myself.

The sabres are supposed to be his boot rockets, those wonky sabres are the closest thing I had too them.

The under shirt I sculpted on top of a tac jango body with kneadatite.
The upper collar is made again using shrink wrap, heated and then cut and glued to fit.
The gun belt is made from two jango holsters, shrink wrap, green metal wire and glue.
The legs are also from tac jango, cut down a bit for the correct height.
The boots were made again using shrink wrap and cut an glued together over boots from some general target or trus military figs boots.
The gaunts are from evo pack jango
The hands are pilot obi-wan from rots
The hat was made using a tattoine luke's hat and Kneadatite and the cut to shape.
The coat was cut down and weathered, taken from some dreadknock
The head is a figure from the cantina scene from the power of the jedi line
The head tubes are from the mcquarrie leia back pack

A lot went into this bad boy.

Again thanks for all the awesome, welcomes and comments.

Wow, I love that Mandalore the Great. Heck that Cody looks sweet too. I will be honest, the new one's hips remind me of an armored female's anatomy and this one looks much better imo. Wow, I just love the RC series figures too. Nice work. Expect front page treatment tomorrow. We have a policy here at the Shipyards, GOOD CUSTOMS MAKE THE FRONT PAGE PERIOD.  I just have to slap Clint's hands every once in awhile or he won't let me beat him to the front page when figs this good show up.

Lol, thanks Tamer.....

When I got the hasbro fully articulated lameity that is their cody. I was totally let down that a company that makes millions of dollars can't make something better than a poor slob, with three kids and a wife too support.

The head sums up the stupidity of that new cody.
Couldn't they have used a different head than the rots head?

No beatings of any one on my account. ;D

Thanks agian for the honor of letting me hit the front page, I really appreciate it.

To TCC- Thanks for the compliments. The venku is special too me for a lot of reasons. But the most important reason is the fact, that I actually was talking to Karen Traviss through email one night, and mentioned I did a custom Venku.

She was very happy with the way it turned out. She even sent the pictures to someone she was friends with at hasbro.
I saved those emails, just to reread them, and know that an author of stories I loved, appreciated my handy work.

Shame that everything she built, is now totally destroyed.

It was a humbling, but an up lifting experience to talk to her and have her love my custom.

I tried venku on my third child, but my wife was not into it. But I got Cody instead, so no loss there lol.

I like mandalore the great the best out of all of those.

my next few mando customs are going to be nontraditional mandos as well actually, a similar mandalorian commando design as your mandalore the great as well as a few standard commandos.

Love this latest wave of custom goodness, Skepsis. That Mandalore the great is stupendous! How long have you been making customs, if I may ask?

I started customizing customs around the time after rots. Before that I was mostly into models, zoids, gundams, tanks, planes...
A friend of mine did up some customs that he wanted from rots, including a Com Cody and I was bitten by it.
I started with clones, went to jedi and then it just went on.

I made mandalore the great back in 2007.
I've been wanting to try my hand at him again, too see if I can improve him.

Again thanks to everyone for all the compliments, it's easy to feel welcome here.

sweet dude how did u make the commander cody arms

The arms for Cody are actually a normal clones, but with the shoulder plates removed and sanded down.
I then got an rots cody and cut the shoulder plates off with an xacto knife, then dremeled the inside of the plates till they were basically just thin and pliable.

I then carefully super glued them over the shoulder joints of the custom.

That Kal Skirata is the best I've seen. Hopefully Hasbro looks at this site. They don't think there is any interest in EU characters? Just goes to show what people really want. More clones. More Mandalorians. More new Jedi and Sith. Keep up the good work dude.

Nice work on Vau and Skirata.  It is interesting how people see characters differently.  For instance, I always pictured Vau with an angular almost gaunt face.  I like your version though.  It looks like you put some time and effort into these two.  They turned out really well.

Thanks guys for all the awesome compliments.
Jixton is one of my favs I have ever done. It was a pain to say the least.
The body at one time was an evo maul, so painting that skin tone was really really hard.

The dengar was one I've been wanting to do for a long time.
When the comic pack dengar came out I was like, what the heck is this pos?
It didn't fit dengar in any way at all.

So I picked up my character book and went to work on it.

The Nien was one I just wanted too do. Since we didnt get a figure of him, well not a new fig but a repaint of him, I decided to make one of my own.

That Talon I made a while back.
It's at least 2 to 3 yrs old.

I could have done the head joint better on it, but as far as the body goes I thought it came out well.

That Jolee is really old.
It's all cloth over a rots mace windu.

I made it about 5 yrs ago.
My wife helped with the making of the clothes.

Atin

The reason for the different head for Atin is he was from a different pod group, not lead by Skirata like the rest of Omega squad.

nice, awesome set of customs.

There are a couple of images that arn't showing up...

those movie style clones look realy good.  Love the rex.

the RC's look good too.  Idk about the heads, they look like they have no necks... how did you replace the neck balls? or did you hollow out the heads to fit on the large ball?

nvm, I looked at them again and the only one that looks a little off is the last one, the one with the different head.  The others look perfect.

I actually removed the ball itself from the death star gunners bodies. I then removed the ball joint from the rc figs.
I then took some brass rod and drilled a hole in the ball, and glued them together.
Then I drilled, and leveled out the neck of the rc figs, and glued the ball to the neck.

I'll take better picks of them if you want me too.

Personally, the no neck looking is probably the shitting pics, and the all black.

gotchya,  I kind of figured that's what you had done, swapped the balls of each neck and all.   The "no neck" illusion is probably the angle.  I still don't know how I'm going to tackle my RC figure to get it the way I want it...

The skepsis strikes!
I love em all, buddy! What did you use for the visor on your legacy style Cody?

I took a visor off of a rots Cody helm with an x-acto knife, then cut a slit into the aotc head, then I worked the visor into the grove with super glue on it.
I used the glue for two things, one to hold and the other to fill the hole.

I used an enamel white paint, to further fill the slit, and give it a more washed, weathered white look.

The faux targeting stock is actually a targeting stock from a mando helmet, cut down to a point.

Gorbin looks sweet!  Is that the Holiday Edition version of Boba that you used?  Did you shrink the neck ball on it, or dremel out a head to fit?

I dremeled out the head. The head is another of those target or Trus military fig heads.
Yeah the body is the holiday boba...but the legs are clone legs, with heat shrink on them to give them a thicker look.

Again guys, thanks for all the compliments.
It's nice too be on a site, where they appreciate everyone's styles and not just the most popular.

I've been wondering when I'd see someone make a realstic style custom of Gree with his funky dual mohawks.  Frankly, I think that hairstyle has become intgral to the character, I can't take the TAC figure seriously now with that full head of jet black hair under the helmet.    LOL

I do so love realistic versions of CW characters.

I enjoy making them.

I think if enough customizers made them, and sold them on ebay.
Hasblo would get the idea and start making them.

No one can convince me that hasblo doesn't check sites, and ebay for what is popular.

I agree. Totally. I saw a homemade drop gunship and At-te prior to them making one and I am assured that the thousands that auction got convinced them more than anything to make it and go with bigger vehicles.

Nice work on the Sion fig.  I'm with you on the realistic Clone Wars figs; eventually Hasbro will make them---that seems almost inevitable.  They'll get tired of trotting out the same old stuff and want to draw us collectors in one last time and float realistic versions of Anakin, Aksoka, Obi-Wan, numerous clones, etc. to keep us hanging on one last time.  I'd like to see it happen, but it also kinda makes me think that it would be signaling the end of a great focus on collectors... :-[

Nice changes made to these guys; will these guys be playing any Bar Mitzvahs anytime soon?   ;)

All kidding aside, nice work on the soft goods and making them seem more realistic than Hasbro's most recent concoctions!

I wish they had soft goods....but mine are all hard plastic and no soft goods. The one on the right is hasbros  and the soft good just look awful to me imho.

I agree

Thanks for the compliments guys...I may have another finished tonight. I still need two more bodies to finish them totally.

These look as though they could be Hasbro's protos that they show us at SDCC, TF, or the like.  Adding the articulation makes them look like they belong in the TVC line.  Excellent work!

Thanks for all the compliments guys.
It's been tough to get things done with all the kids, and the job hunting.

They look awesome! Great job!

Thanks bro!!

Thank you, that means a lot. The Vebb I'm really proud of. It took a lot of sculpting to bring out his vestments. I'm trying to do figures that I have a feeling hasbro will never make, or not anytime soon. Especially all the miscellaneous jedi.
Too say it looks good enough to be done by the professionals really makes me feel good.

Cool to see some Jedi gettin' some love.  Good work!

Gotta love the jedi and sith....MANDOS more so, but the outta the box figures are the ones I want too see. I know hasbro won't do them in fear that no one will buy them, unlike the millions of hans, chewies and lukes ::).

Looks good to me, especially Vebb. On the front page. Good to see you back.
[/quote

Thanks bro...it's good to be back and making customs. Thanks for the front page love.

The recipe for him:
Mon Cal warrior head-with face redo
Hands are mon cal warrior
The body and boots are from Coleman Trebor
I cut down the boots so that he would be shorter. I sculpted the vestments using greenstuff

I'll get better pics of all them up asap.

The recipe sounds good, I can expect a lot of folks will want a realistic Vebb in their Jedi Customs Collection. Why Hasbro won't do things like this I have no idea, but that is the reason we have customizers like you.

You would think with how money grubbing they are...they would do things like this in a heart beat. My wife and I talk about this a lot, that we think hasbro watches sites like this, and other star wars related sites, ebay the net in gerenal too what the hot ticket custom people make.
Then they go for making them. Problem with that, there are too many already better version out there, that people would want and hasbro takes tem down several notches so they don't sell well.

Mind if I ask what parts you used for Even Piel and both Sora Bulq?

Dont mind at all...

Sora's upper body  and head- original sora
kama- mace widnu from the 30th line
legs are honestly something I pulled from my parts bin
The Boots are from those same pair of legs, but I redid them adding shrink/heat shrink wrap too them making them bigger and more realistic.

Even Piel
His upper body is from the clone wars Piel, but redone and sculpted too look like real robes
The head is from the piel we got a long time ago, but I reworked the face, can't see in the pics because well, they suck. I have to get some real pics up.
The legs- are a combonation of  Han solo upper legs, and the lower legs are ceremonial Luke from the 30th line.

Phew...

Let's see. ...

The chest is from Sora Bulq.
The arms are mace windu
The belt is from a Tinn figure from the clone wars figs from way back.

The legs are anakin legs

Oooohh...this looks gooood!  Love the added bulk you've given him in the sculpt.  I just wish that the face that Hasbro gave him wasn't so teddy bear-like.  He needs some larger fangs or something to give him that "Stay back, I'm dangerous" feel.

I wanted him too look ape, bigfoot, yetti like. This animal is always patrolling around a frozen waste land for taun tauns who run constantly. He has to have huge strong legs to run fast and climb hard.
I agree the face is blah, but I can't sculpt faces lol.

Excellent sculpting!  It's nice to see a hulking behemoth of a wampa...the guy-in-suit always seemed a bit too short for my liking.  Your version is more in line with what I envision when I see this creature hunting on Hoth and swiping Luke off his tauntaun.  Nice work; turned out very, very well!
