Believe it or not, guys, I don't have a perminant work station and just do it on the living room floor wherever I'm out of the way. I have tables set up downstairs
But don't work down there because if I did, I would never see the wife.
I will post a pic when I can find one. I did post one in my customs thread somewhere.

No it's not that it's more like I need to be available if she needs guidance running the tv remote or something.Lol

HAHA.. "honey which remote turns on the vcr?!"  "it's a DVD Player!"

lol....  I used to work wherever I could be out of the way and clean up after I was done for the afternoon, but things have gotten a little outta hand.  I've got so much stuff going on and so many things being worked on that I can't just pack it up and get it all back out and remember what I was doing!

I have at least got things organized into about 5 boxes consisting of:
-Spare figure parts (disarticulated)
-Complete fodder figures
-Accessories, weopons, clothing, etc
-finished figures to keep
-finished figures to sell

You'll be disappointed, I bet:

My workstation is the dining room table:

Sean wanted to start a repaint tonight so I took this pic of the table prepared for a painting session:

So that's what he started and what I am going to smooth over for him:

Long ago my work space used to look like this..

However, now it's just the kitchen table. I store my stuff in tiny bins when not working on them so it's easy to move. Like Clonehead I need to be available for my wife at all times.. (orders is orders sir!) The good part is that she is often at the table with me on her laptop so we can chat and share funny stories after the kids go to sleep.

Sometimes I do some painting at my work desk at lunch time, but it's very scaled back.. 4 colors on hand, 1 fig and about 5 brushes.

lol I'm glad I'm not the only whipped guy here!  ;D  the only reason my kitchen table has gotten to look the way it is now is cuz dawn's doing it too and realizes that once you start something you don't want to box it back up cuz the way we are if you box it back up you probably won't want to go through the trouble of getting it back out to work on.  I like to be able to come home and for 5min here, 10min there sit down and work on something whenever I get bored.  I might sit down to start a few paint touch ups though and come out with a new figure and have been sitting there for 3 hours... that's how the HAT trooper came to be! lol.  I sat down at the table to work on some custom guns and started fitting stuff together for that guy and wound up sitting there working for several hours...

Kurgan, did you make that comlink Han Solo is wearing, or is it a version that comes with it? I was bored the other night and started making a removable comlink for my VOTC Han Solo... it's not done yet, but I think it's off to a good start.

Post by: Commander_Kurgan on August 31, 2009, 10:48:01 PM
Yep, that's the Han who comes with the Falcon.
I picked up a few of these on Ebay as I want the gun belt for my spare parts box.
The wires of the headset attach to a box at the rear of the belt.

Hmmm... I didn't realize that Han fig had a separate gunbelt.  I may need to start hunting them...

Anyway, here's a pic of me and my workspace Rebe took.

good lookin set up doc.  I need to get me some of those magnifying head sets.. or at least a head lamp so I can see.  The lighting in my kitchen sucks.

That is a nice set up. Everything you need is right there.
I used to use those magnifying headsets but it seemed to cause headaches. I do a better job seeing close without my contact lenses in.

this labor day I labored away and performed a much needed work station enema....  I had to get rid of all the crap that'd built up on my table and in my cabinet.

this is what my nicely organized customs supply cabinet now looks like!:

and after organization this is how the kitchen table looks:

Here is a shot of my messy resin-casting work station. That piece of craft board is setting on my light box and I use the same light as I am casting. That pile of resin flash continues to grow as I cast and I need to clean it up. Most of those molds are marked as to what parts that they cast but somehow, I still can recognize the molds that I need just by looking at them even though there are over 50 different parts that they cast now.
When the casts are cured, I demold them here and take them upstairs to clean them up of thier flash while lying on the floor at the top of the stairs.

Not quite as full of paints & materials as some of the more sophisticated customizers, but here is my little setup none the less.
I was in a video call on Skype with Jay (wraith_nine) when this photo was taken as I was doing a "Live custom" as it were.

And here is the draw I keep all my paints & utensils in...

Oooh, I had not thought of using skype to do "live customizing"

That is neat.

I need to clean up my work area, its huge, but a dang mess.

Also, I hear you on the remote thing, I use a harmony remote and my wife actually HATES it, not just dislikes it, lol.

I had a chance to take a pic of my current workstation area (the kitchen table) and thought I would share it.  I also have some random parts bins laying around. The small black case on the left is my "Mobile" unit. I have 6 paints in it and a set of brushes. Sometimes I'll take it to work with some small projects and do some painting at lunch time.

I also found this really cool metal case (on left) from Target for a dollar. It says "Sith Lord" across the top and holds a bunch of brushes.

Thanks!

Well, I finally have a workspace all my own, with almost everything I need to spend quality time comfortably!  As you will see from the pics below, I have ample space, ample tools, and a smidgeon of an image of what I am working on now, the Imperial Shipyards Security Force!  I might reveal tidbits here and there as they come along, but I'm keeping most of it underwraps for now!  The only thing I'm missing right now is my television, which I should have hooked up down there by next week!

Hey guys his is a cool thread. I have enjoyed seeing everyones set up/non set up and thought I would get a pic of mine in here. I work in my office and have a dedicated desk but i also run a landscape company and a very small skateboard company out of this 1 room. This is what my desk looks like most of the time as I like to work on 3-4 projects at a time. There is a heat gun, 2 dremmels and a drill that you can't see in the floor. I'll get more pics soon...I need to go clean up.

lol I know stenhunter, it looks so empty :(

you guys like that shelf set up?  it was realy simple to make.

I took some old trim board that was cut into about 1.5 inch widths and cut them to around 2 feet long.  I then used two more peices cut to about the same length for both sides and a scrap peice of floor board for the base.

The great thing about the width of the shelves is that it fits a figure stand perfectly.  I have so many stands now and figured I'd use them for this so I got out the hot glue gun and glued all my extra stands to the shelves on the display unit.  The shelves are by no means at uniform heights, I just eyeballed the height with different figures.  I wanted to make sure I could get that darktrooper on one set and that turned out to be the tallest.

In hindsight I wish that the shelf was just a little wider so that the figure stands had a few centimeters behind them, some of the figures don't fit on the stand up against the wall,  the jetpack- clone in the top left corner of the pic is one of them, the backpack hits the wall and makes him unsteady on the pegs...

but all in all it's nice cust the figures hold tight to the glued down pegged stands and hopefully won't be doing any shelf diving now!

Last night I decided I could not do anything else until I cleaned up my table. I have been looking for some type of step pieces with no good luck so I made some out of foam core. I started putting some of my favorite customs and non customs on the top 2 levels and well have my paint on the lower shelf. I hope to have a pic of a clean desk soon...yea right. ::)

Last night I decided I could not do anything else until I cleaned up my table.

I'm at that point again, too  ;D But I know I can do it, as this picture of earlier this year clearly shows:

Problem is, when the table is so tidy and organized it becomes and irresistable pleasure to work at it and in no time, there's body parts, paint jars, Dremel residue, pieces of styrene and WIPs all over the place  ;D

Finally got a new desk, looked for months. . .

here it is mostly assembled:

And here is the rest of the room, remember I only have 20x12 and eventually, the wife will want to put a bed back in here, lol.  I'm also going to have to give back the laundry table(our old wooden table):

Nice set up Narceron. Looks like you have plenty of room to work. Nice Joe vehicles and playsets.

I did get my desk cleaned up and glad to say I am now an organized pack rat. I am going to try to clean up as I go from now on. It is so much more enjoyable seeing my desk like this.

this is my figure/paint rack. I will switch the figures out every couple of weeks or when the mood strikes. You can see a few WIP's in this shot.

Under the desk there are boxes of SW figures, Indy fodder, a fabric box, the front one holds 2 dremels, a heat gun and a glue gun.

Under my printer table I have the coolest wet wipe boxes ever. They are shaped like legos and all are labeled with generic weapons, generic figures, SW weapons, IJ weapons and bits, vehicle parts, Joe parts, etc. Then my dremmel bit case and a organizer full of small bits of all types, glues, sculpting tools, tooth pics, pretty much everything under the sun.

and here is another storage bin set up in the closet. Mostly all figures and custom supplies. With more SW stuff on the top shelf. You can see part of my custom tank. The bag is some parts I just rummaged up and wouldn't fit in my box.

Can you find the oldest toy in this picture?

Yeah, that's the ideal situation. But you and I both know, that's not likely to stay that way  :P But the steps are a great idea. I have my paints in a toolbox tray and whenever I need a colour I have to pick each one up to see if it's the right one (I mostly have Citadel's Games Workshop paints with the black caps).

I loved Stompers when I was a kid, even had a few of the playsets/ obstcals

anyhow here is a snap of my new winter workstation,  with winter in Wisconsin not very fun, I moved into a corner of my soon to me Man Cave in my basement, don't mind the crappy table cover, it protects the wood table from my messes. I have to have my little TV going with some SW, Indy film as I work. I need background nose of somekind.
Most of my fodder is stacked up out of site and I dig when I need something. Nothing great or dedicated but it allows me to still do something  I only wish I could airbrush down there but those things will have to wait til spring or I need to fire up the heater in the garage.

my old desk has been good to me and I'll keep him til he falls apart...though I normally paint at the kitchen table, whipped this guy up, still a WIP, but much farther along:

Pretty cool WIP there, Narceron. What's the parts list? I like that upper half with the tie and jacket a lot.

Anyway, LukeSprywalker's reorganization of his workspace had me do the same.

This is how I had things set up before:

(http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a295/incomT65/th_workspace_03.jpg) (http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a295/incomT65/?action=view&current=workspace_03.jpg)

And this is how it looks now:

I rotated my desk 90 degrees and place it against the wall. And cleaned it up quite a bit.

I have a ways to go here but since the Wife moved out, I now have a free bedroom to make into a hobby area for my intellectual pursuits. Since, I have another place dedicated to my Star Wars poster collection, I am going with a LOTR/fantasy/Iron Maiden theme for the wall coverings.  I have 1-2 computer desks and a drawing table to put in here as well as some rubbermaid drawers full of hobby stuff. I should be able to work on figures/vehicles/models/casting/and ebay here.

Looks great Clint! I have some of those same posters somewhere! I can't wait to see what SW items go into this! Or will it be all LOTR?
Title: Re: post a pic of your workstation....
Post by: Clonehead on July 08, 2010, 05:59:18 PM
I'm thinking LOTR for display items but the main focus of the work to be performed in this room will be star wars stuff. It will probably over flow into the display area, I would imagine.

got some update shots of my hobby room. Lets call it the Customizing man cave.  So far, I have two desks set up. 1 for casting and 1 for custom work.
The custom desk got a cable box, a garage sale dvd player, a 12 year old surround sound receiver, and a new 22" led tv.
the tv does HD but as of yet, I have no high res sources to feed to it.  I need to paper the remaining walls in star wars whenever I can find some time.

I have a smaller shelf that I still need to hang and a bigger bookshelf that has some sw items in it.

Cool deal Clint, you have been on fire as of late. You have been motivating me to get off my duff. I swear you are like the SW Energizer Bunny. I liked seeing those defense of Hoth sets. If you see any more of those or the imperial pack on clearance I would love a few more of those too. On the front page.

Sith Happens, cool work area and collection area. I love the ARC 170 hanging up. I have that one also but it is in the box.

Ron, very nice and organized work station. So where do you hide all your fodder?

I love these threads. I have a nice huge section to work with. But I have too many tables in it and it makes it cramped. It used to be my dad's work station when he lived here and I was growing up, so it's only fitting, now that I live here, it's mine, only different kind of work, lol.

I have a couple pics of when we first moved in:

I basically have two long white ikea tables against the main wall(concrete one) and one on the side, and then the wooden workbench my dad built from scratch behind me(when sitting at the white tables) making a big long uneven "U" shape.

Of couse, being the slob that I am, it looks like you put them all in a jar, with all my fodder, paints, and everything else.. shook it up, and then poured it into the room, lol.

I'll take another pic before I clean it, how it's set up, then another again after it's cleaned... though, it might take awhile, and I'm warning you, it's not a pretty sight, lol  I'll take it later tonight when I go down to work on my diorama again.

Nice-looking spaces, both of ya's!  Local thrift-store had a corner-angled computer desk outside it recently, and I was soooo tempted to stop and see about getting it to put in my workroom so that I don't have to use my mom's old (HUGE & HEAVY) oak desk as a paint-and-glue station.  But I'll have to significantly remodel the shop's interior before I can really do that...

Nice updates to this thread, guys.

I've recently moved a few items back and forth and bought some storage bins. My desk hasn't been as tidy as the last time I posted a picture, but that's mainly because Ive been working on multiple projects at a time. Which isn't the best thing to do, but that's jus how I work.

I'll take a new picture sometime this weekend.

Here is one of my desks.
There I was, minding my own business, carving flash off of parts when for no reason, the media rack with over 400 cds and dvds decided to topple over just shy of hitting me. It did hit the desk and caused a bit of havok but spared the parts of 6 different orders I was working on at the time which were assembled more to the right of the shot on the desk top.
I gave up for the night after that. Man, what a crash! It was about 1 in the morning and scared the crap out of the wife who was sleeping in the next room.
Guess I get to look forward to picking up that mess in the morning.

That's why I've digitalized my CD collection  ;D I can completely understand your wife's reaction though. I always jump up when my phone goes. I have my phone on my table and always in mute/vibration setting. But that vibration makes one helluva racket!

I see I still have to post a pic of the current state my work space is in... Sometime this weekend, guys. Promise  :)
