Simon's casting corner, a warning to all, :)
« on: October 07, 2009, 04:49:32 PM »
So, I'm posting pics, :)

So here we go:

My targets

My molds

My mold broke and needed all my material to cover, :(

My casts(there were casualties)

Over all, i like the hiss tank driver head, the agryus head didn't do badly, this one just has battle damage, :)

You'd think being a chemist on paper would make me better than this.  (I'm not actually a chemist, but I have over 80 credit hours that disagree)

I did show the worst side of them, I think I've solved the air bubble problem at least in these simple molds.

I use a CPU case fan mounted under a piece of cardboard, lol.

Slight vibration, and cools to boot, :)

Dye was ok, I think I could get it better, but I mixed it in after instead of before, errr, in the cup, I mean, it should go in first.

well, it's more than I've got done....

I'm planning on useing prengles cans and empty coke cans for my initial mold structures... clint uses cigarette packs because that's what he has handy and I am trying to think of cheap disposable small containers that I might be able to use...

what did you use?  or did you try and make your own containment vessle?

I did and it would have worked, had I been a little more careful.

I was using blister packaging, lol, see how its the shape of a SW figure's pack?  doh!

Need something deep, devin, thats the real trick, about 1.4 inches deep.

lol I'll probably wind up using some blister packing too... I think it was a hot wheels package that I was planning on using!  it has several deep square sections in it that would be perfect, I hope that I am able to remove the mold without destroying the plastic package so that I can reuse it....

Those look good for your first.  I made a cast of Republic Commandos rifle.  My first didn't look like a rifle.
Try using Dixxie Cups. They're cheap and can be cut to height. ;D

Dixie cups sound like a good idea. I did the scorch rifle one time but they would generally turn out pretty ugly and neednalot of work to look close. I might try the smaller version one of these days.

Any more runs on these parts, Simon? For me, the second and third run usually turn out better than the first.

I'm gonna try another run this weekend, I have enough mold stuff for another set.

Clint, do you have any idea for good casting compound?  I like my casts, but they aren't flexible enough to fit on the ball peg, at least not without some risk of breaking it, :)

I haven't found anything I like that is more flexable buddy. Try reaming the hole out a bit. Of you take out too much, you can always fill it in some with superglue.

Well, I think the dye works well enough for you to try it, Clint, so thats one thing off our list.

I think I can figure something out about the rigidity of the resin, give me a little time.

I did all my masters work on the other side of organic chemistry, these vinyls and what not are just beyond me.

Except I did get to see PVA blow up once, thats right, old Emler blew up, :)
