I have confirmed rumors that this will come in two boxes. One in the regular Clone Wars deco we have seen pictures of and one in a vintage style box that will be exclusive to toysrus. Not sure many of us will buy the regular deco one if we can get a vintage style!

I tell ya, I'm am now torn: I HAVE to have one opened.  But I ALSO want one in the vintage style box just to hold on to.  But do I REALLY want to spend $200 on them?  Or should I wait it out until TRU puts them at $49.99 like they did with the AT-TE?

i guess the real question you have to ask your self is.. are you willing to risk waiting for it to go on clearance? they could be sold out before you know it!!

I'll be getting it,   I am sure that these will hit clearance someplace,   The BMF did so I would think that Hasbro will employ the same market saturation to recoup the new tooling costs they like to talk about.. I will get one when I see it the first time, but that's nto to say I won't buy an extra if they do go on sale.

I was skeptical at first whether or not I would be purchasing this.  The more I look at it, the more I'm liking it.  If I could change one thing, I'd make the guns located at the sides of the head less bulky.  I realize this is a toy; but those guns in particular look a bit too toyish.  Pity Hasbro doesn't do something similar to what was done for the chin guns on the AT-ST.

from the one side shot, It appears that the lower side panel only opens on one side. i am not sure what function those rear side hatches serve. The dual function of the newly located t-handle is interesting and innovative but I wish they would have hid it's closed appearance a little better. I notice that you can see through the head's front window. This thing looks really cool but the head still appears a bit bulky, to me. It could have benefitted with an een bigger body. That being said, I will have to have one the day that it comes out. The launching mechanism of the speeder bike does seem a bit wonky. Why not have it facing the opposite direction and just have the loading platform slowly deploy rather than shooting out backwards.

Toys R Us stores in my area have a tendency for inflated prices.  I wonder how much more they'll try to get for the exclusive vintage packaging.

pros:
plenty of play features
added bonus of included speeder bike
included driver
lights and sounds aplenty
ropes/cables for snowtroopers AND luke
head handle thingie

cons:
head is too large
body is too small
ejecting speeder bike is pointless, a slower deployment meconism would have been smarter...
COST

pretty much sums it up... if I can get one on clearance I think I would probably try and reconstruct the body of it so that it'd be larger and more accurate...  if I can't find one on clearance, I'll manage without it.

Post by: Tamer on February 16, 2010, 06:10:49 AM
Yeah we knew it wasn't gonna be totally accurate, there was just no way. I kinda wish they had went with a smaller head that didn't fit as many figures to make it more screen accurate, but compared to the other walkers I have this one looks like a major improvement. I will have both box styles and at least one to open and if they hit clearance probably more.

Devin, I would love to see you build a bigger body for this thing.

It's not perfect but I like it and will pick one up for sure. I may have to do a little redecorating though.  BTW, what is the street date on this thing?
Title: Re: Vintage 2010 BAT-AT!
Post by: Tamer on February 16, 2010, 05:59:52 PM
I think August 1st is the street date on this.

I don't think Hasbro has as much of a slam dunk with this vehicle as they did with the MF, but to make this thing as movie accurate as we would like would probably mean only one figure would fit in the head or the body would be so big that it wouldn't be in a price range any kid could have. I think we have to compare it with what we have already and ask ourselves is it an improvement? I don't think any of us can objectively say it isn't an improvement on the old mold.  I for one am still excited to get my hands on it.

I figure you guys might enjoy this size comparison shot that someone rigged up over at Jedi Temple Archives. It should be close to correct and a quarter was used in the BATAT shot to scale the overlay of the smaller walker image.

ok... the more I see it the more I like it...

seeing that overlay image... you know what would be a great custom of the ne B-AT-AT... and endor paint job... and a scratch built landing platform to go with it's new size....

I think... that instead of building a from scratch at-at that a landing platform with a shuttle and everything will be the project I chose to do.  I also think it'd be cool to mock it up as a functional table....

I think they did a good job.  Of course I wish it was more accurate but I understand their reasoning being that this is a toy.  Like I said, I will probably rework the interior a bit.  I can see how troop seating wouldn't be that exciting for kids but I would have liked to have seen it.  Something like in this photo:

http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/html/features/starwars/technology_gallery/images/AT-AT%20Cutaway.jpg (http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/html/features/starwars/technology_gallery/images/AT-AT%20Cutaway.jpg)

Oh, and if you're a walker fan you'll love this 3D walker page:

http://www.scifi3d.com/wip_details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=8&key=85 (http://www.scifi3d.com/wip_details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=8&key=85)

I guess you can't please everyone so it looks like a decent compromise. The walkers were a huge attraction for me when I saw ESB, as they were with most people.  I'm just glad they gave it an upgrade.  On a side note, and a little bit of a rant, when I saw AOTC and the clone army landing their walkers and troops I always wished Lucas would have gone back and created a scene like that in ESB for the invasion of Hoth.  I know it doesn't drive the story that much but since he has the capability with the special effects and he did it for AOTC it seems fitting that they would want to show how massive the Empire still is and how they want these rebels wiped out for what they did to the Death Star.  It wouldn't even add too much extra time to it spliced into the attack scene, say, right after Leia's pilot briefing.  It can show the Imperials landing on the other side of that fog that the rebel troops are looking at right after that scene.  Then, there's sooo much room for additional CGI troops, speeders and other Imp warcraft when they first spot the walkers.  It's a blank slate. Also, showing Imperial infantry advancing on foot would help give meaning to when you see the rebels armed with only rifles firing from the trenches.  What exactly are they firing at?  The walkers?  Also, when the AT-AT is downed and the rebel foot soldiers cheer and run out of the trenches what are they running towards?  Walkers?

Here is a cut scene from Force Commander.  Just imagine a bunch of these scenes but during the Hoth invasion instead...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YXXQ3I2fxQ&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YXXQ3I2fxQ&feature=related)

Anyway, end of rant.  As you can see I just love walkers and I'm glad they upgraded this bad boy.

I'm glad they upgraded it, it's a step in the right direction... I just believe that they could have taken out just a couple of the play features that seem pointless (like the ejecting speeder bike) and made it more accurate...
for instance, they could have removed some of the light/sound mechanics in the body and made more crew space.
scrapping the speeder ejection mechanics for a manual slide out compartment could have been reconfigured to hold TWO speeders side by side for more accuracy

I'll bet in a year or so they'll go back and recreate an entirely new body for this and re-release it... knowing hasbro they don't do anything in one monumental leap and instead make gradual andjustments untill they might get it right, then they take a step backwards....

FOR INSTANCE... why are they still using the POTF mold of the speeder bike with the crappy verticly oriented handle bars?!  Figs have swivel wrists now, there is no reason for the handlebars to be oriented that way, give us the more accurate AOTC speeder bike that was released with the correct style handle bars!

I agree.  I may have been the oddball when I was a kid but I didn't like the electronic features (grinding noise at the time) and I still don't.  In fact, when it came to the original TIE Fighter I didn't like the way the cockpit was shaped due to the battery housing.  The X-Wing batteries were better hidden.  I never used that lame sound effect and the toy suffered in looks I think. And, I was a kid, not an "adult collector" thinking that way.

I agree again.  The speederbike feature takes up a lot of room for what it is.  I didn't mind the feature on the Turbo Tank but an AT-AT? A speeder bike upgrade would be nice or even just release it with new handles if they want to keep the costs down.

Those links were truly great, Psyclone! I knew that Tamer would love em.
I also agree that the whole speeder bike feature was not necessary and I would have went with a more spacious crew/cargo compartment. They could have just added some slots to the floor for the speeder bike landing gear to clip into like in the gunship's interior.

I believe Hasbro has stated in a Q&A session the AOTC speeder bike mold has been lost.  Heck, I'd be happy if they just re-did the dang handle bars.  They annoy me to no end.

That's a lame excuse.  The handlebars were the only thing that needed changing.  And it would be NOTHING to mold a brand new accurate handlebar sculpt that could attach to the OLD potf molds....  LAME!

better get it now with the last Legacy waves as there will not be one released on basic card (saga legends) or otherwise once the BAT-AT is actually on store shelves. Not sure why, but guess we could ask if someone puts it in the thread.

I did send in our questions for this round by the way. Forgot to post that.

And the better version of the driver.   :D  Just my opinion.  I know some out there like the 2009 version; but he just looks too disproportionate to me.   The older version, while less articulated, and apparently slightly less accurate, has better looking human proportions to me.

The one thing that burns me is the battlepack they have to go with this. Why have a battlepack that has another Hoth Speederbike in it unless they are gonna put two Hoth Scouts in it? Basically the walker comes with a Hoth Speederbike and one of the Saga2 version At-At drivers.  The battlepack that goes with this supposedly is giving us another speederbike, a Hoth Scout, Vader (whom to my knowledge only appeared in an At-At in holographic form on Hoth), and a snowtrooper with web cannon. The snowtrooper with canon I can understand, but why not more At-At drivers or snowtroopers? Why not some neat canon that can strap onto it like they did with the Big turbo tank?

You're letting the presence of the AT-ATs on Hoth cloud your vision.   ;)  No arguments here about the walkers being the stars of the show in this sequence; but Vader *did* show up on Hoth.  Vader personally watched the Falcon blast its way out of Echo Base.  Time to pop in ESB; and this time don't fast forward through the parts that don't show walkers on screen.   :D   ;)

Man I feel like a kid again, seeing that in that box, back to that Christmas, when I WAS  just a we lad, when santa had this under the tree.
Brings a smile and seriously some tears because of how my parents scrimped and saved to give me a decent Christmas.

I want this box because of the look of it.
Add too it that Im not sure Ill have any where to put this bad boy, I leaving it in the box might be for the best for me. So get this box and I kill the proverbial two birds with one stone.

Anyone that got this missing any parts? Picked it up last night at Target, it was missing the ladder that goes inside the body. The figure was also tied in the box window upside-down.

Was all the tape still in tact?  Still, it would be odd that someone would only steal the ladder.  I guess I'd make sure you got the right figure too.  Again though, if someone were low enough to swap out a figure, you'd think they'd at least check it was positioned properly.  Heck, make sure you got the SAGA version speeder bike while you're at it.

Wow! That is a deal!

I did go to my local one today and take advantage of thier 89.99 AT-AT. Looks like you can get em online with free shipping for that price too. I got thier best shipping box from the upper shelf. It didn't have one dent in it, which is more than I could say for most of the others.

It is possible they would bring this bad boy back out for the anniversary of ROTJ. I would love to see them do a version with more realistic side guns.

That weathered one looks so much better to my old eyes. I wish I had the guts to try it, but ruining a new BAT-AT is something that would probably ruin my year.

The only thing that bugs me, and not a whole lot, is the fact that the side guns are not very movie accurate. I guess we could all handle that like Dark Lord, but I would love to see Hasbro take us up on our side gun battlepack idea. They did admit it was a good idea and they have said no to other ideas we have had only to see them made further down the road.

not that it compares to DLs, but I did a little tweak on my side guns that helped it a bit look better, unfortunately, my wife has the camera right now so I cant get a pic, but when she gets home I'll post one...again, nothing big, just a little tweak

I took a Lego cone, and put it on the end of the dart. I cut off the ball and shave it down just a tick so the lego cone slipped over it and then painted. I used a black cone so I didnt have to paint the inside :)
